Jonathan Byers was always a mystery. He was quiet and observed everyone, half the time people didn't realize he was in the room. But you did. The Byers family was strange to some people. Crazy Joyce when Will went missing and Jonathan being in a fight with Steve Harrington. But the one thing about the Byers, they love hard. They love unconditionally.
So when Jonathan said he had to make a trip to Indiana City or wherever he had said, you didn't think much of it. You even offered to go with him, keep him company. Now to today, it was the day we left. We had a lot of miles to cover so we headed out early.
"Jonathan, I swear to God I am going to kill you," You yelled. It was eight in the morning.
"It's a two day drive. Let's get a move on," He yelled back. A duffel back slung over his shoulder.
"Yeah, yeah. Tell it to someone who gives a shit."
You finally get on the road and the car is silent. Other than the soft rock music playing on the radio, it's dead silent.
"Jonathan?"
"Yeah?"
"Why are we even going?"
"I have to buy something for a girl I know," He says, eyes focused on the road.
We sat in silence again. It hurt to think about Jonathan with another girl. Knowing his small crush he had on Nancy Wheeler a while back, you felt like this trip was for her. You were just riding with him. Jonathan was not your boyfriend and he never will be. That's how it is. You love him from afar and he loves Nancy Wheeler from afar. We both love someone, but they don't realize it.
We take turns driving, Jonathan first then you. You sang along to the music and Jonathan laughed at your off-key notes. You challenged him to do better and was surprised at the fact he was a good singer. That made you fall for him even more.
"Hey, Jonathan?"
"Yes," He said, sleepily.
"Do you ever wonder what it would be like to be with me? Y'know, like how everyone has been telling us for years to get together."
"Uh, I mean I used to think about it but other than that, no not really."
Ouch, that hurt. You had been friends since you were three so everyone thought you would end up married or at least dating. Nope. We finally called it quits after nine hours of driving and found a small hotel to stay at.
"Two rooms please," Jonathan said.
"No problem kids."
The room was nice. Everything was neat and cute. Little did you know, Jonathan harbored feelings for you. You were in your room and decided to take a shower.
Jonathan was pacing back and forth in his room. He had been thinking about your question. And he had lied to you and himself. He did think about being with you. Of course he did, but he couldn't because you thought of him as a friend.
Sitting in the shower, you think about how Jonathan basically only thought of you as a friend. Of course he would. Everyone did. He liked Nancy. You stayed in the shower for about a hour before getting out.
Dinner with Jonathan was great. You talked a lot about what you wanted in relationships and how you can't find anyone who is good enough.
"You deserve way better than any guy in Hawkins," Jonathan said.
"What if there is a boy I did want?"
"Well, since you are not with him and he is stupid to not notice your feelings for him so easily then he ain't worth it."
"Jonatha-"
"No, I mean it. You're a great girl and you deserve the best. The best of the best. Hell, the best of the best of the best. If that makes sense," He laughed.
"Jonathan-"
"You are my best friend and I will not allow you to date anyone who is not worth it or does not treat you right."
"Jonathan Byers, listen to me."
"I'm sorry, go on."
"What if the boy I wanted was my best friend?" you ask.
"Then you better tell him because he is defintely missing out."
You look at him funny and then get up to leave.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm going to bed."
"Hey, what if I want someone who is my best friend?" Jonathan asked, quickly.
"Better tell that lucky girl. I am sure Nancy be happy." You say before going to your room.
Laying in bed, it was hard to fall asleep. You kept thinking his words. "You better tell him...." Should you tell him? No, of course not. You couldn't. You loved him more than anything and you had just told him to tell Nancy how he feels.
Jonathan laid in bed and stared at the ceiling. He couldn't stop thinking of your words. He told you to tell your best friend how you felt. What if he just lost you? He tried to shut his mind down and go to sleep. No sucess.
You tossed and turned, your mind racing over a million miles an hour. You looked at the clock and read that it was late in the night. Why did you have to tell him what you were thinking? Fuck it. You had to tell him.
You get up and walk to the door. What if this was a bad idea? No, you had to. You place your hand on the door knob. You wince, what if this was a really bad idea? You turn the knob and find Jonathan standing right there.
"Couldn't sleep," You say.
"Me either. Maybe it's because of the terrible beds?"
"Maybe. Anyways goodnight." You say and go back into your room.
You walk to the bed and sit on it. You stare at the unmoving door. You stare at it as if it offended you. Fuck this. You get up and find Jonathan walking back to his room.
"Jonathan?"
"Yeah-"
You cut him off with a kiss. Grabbing his shoulders and sliding your lips in sync. You kiss him like he was your oxygen. He melts into the kiss and grabs your hips to pull you closer. He pulls away, leaning his forehead onto yours. He pants into your parted lips and tries to catch his breath.
"Wo-"
"Don't talk. Shush." You press a finger to his lips.
Lips pressed against each other again, passion flows deep like a river. A river that has been held back by a dam for too long, cracks breaking the foundation allowing the river to flood through. Your hands move to his hair and you pull him closer to you.
"I-"
"Shush, let's just enjoy this."
Jonathan pulls you in again and you groan into his warm mouth. He tastes like mint and coffee. Not your favorite but now, it was intoxicating. You wanted more. You walk backwards to your room and shut the door, Jonathan's lips still on yours.

Love is a powerful word. Love can be the beginning or the ending of a relationship. Feelings like this for your best friend is the worst feeling but the best. You sit there and stare at him, seeing everything you always wanted. Everything you always needed. But when you confront these feelings with him, you open a world of possibilities. Good or bad. You love him through everything. You loved him through his worst, through his best, and everything in between.
Throwing everything into you bag, you lift your hand to your lips. Remebering how his felt against yours. How he felt against you. Closing your eyes, you think about how good he felt. How good he tasted. His hands on your hips, your own in his hair. His breathing mixing with yours. How he touched you, softly.
A knock on the door snaps you back to reality. Opening the door, Jonathan stood there. Hands on his hips and waiting. His lips looked inviting.
"Ready to go?"
"Yeah," You tell him.
You both get into the car once you checked out, heading home. You look out the window, the car flooding with thick tension. You look at him and quickly advert your eyes when he glances over. Jonathan pulls into a gas station.
"What are we doing?" You ask.
"Getting some gas."
With that, he was gone. He went inside, leaving you alone in the car. Giving you time to think. You thought of the kiss, his hands, your breathing, how everything felt. The kiss was all you could think about. Nothing else filled your brain. He consumed every thought.
"Pump the gas dude," Jonathan said, knocking on the window.
You get out and start to pump when a guy starts staring at you. You try to hurry but no success. The pump was going so slow. Finally you were able to get back into the car and off you were. Jonathan drove in complete silence. You could barely stand it.
"Are we going to talk about it?" Jonathan said finally after two hours of driving.
"Talk about what?" You ask, nervously.
"The kiss."
"What kiss?"
"We kissed last night," Jonathan said, getting upset at the fact that you weren't remembering.
"Jonathan, we didn't kiss."
"Yes we did. Why won't you admit it?"
You rolled your eyes and turned to the window. You could not admit the fact that the kiss did happen. It was wrong. He loved Nancy and you kissed your best friend. He doesn't even know that you were in love with him.
"Answer me. Why won't you talk about it?"
"Because it didn't happen Jonathan," You yell.
"Yes it did."
"No, I did not kiss you. You are my best friend, nothing more." God it felt like you were just stabbed in the heart. You didn't mean it but he thought of you as a friend and nothing more. So, instead of dealing with the pain of losing Jonathan as a friend, you pretend it didn't happen. If only your mind did not play the kiss over and over in your head.
Jonathan scoffed and turned up the music loud. So loud that you couldn't hear yourself think. Maybe that was a good thing. You love Jonathan but it is easier to keep him at arms length so neither of you get hurt.
"It's your turn to drive." Jonathan pulled over so you could get in the driver's seat. He got in the back and laid down.
"Are you not sitting up here with me?"
"I don't want to be sitting near someone who kisses me for no reason."
That stung.
"Jonathan, I kissed you because I was tired and lonely. I do not have feelings for you. Even if I did, I would not tell you because I am not losing you." You said, tears making their way to your waterline.
"Well, good to know."
You drove through the dark, trying to get home. You have to pull over to another hotel but this time they only have one room.
"I'll take the one on the left," Jonathan says.
"Okay, I'll take the right."
Jonathan jumped in the shower first and came out with his towel dangerously low on his hips. You couldn't help but stare. He looked good with the water droplets running down his naked torso and collecting under his towel, just below his V-line.
"Sorry, forgot my clothes."
"It's-It's okay," You swallow hard.
He went back into the bathroom with his clothes, returning dressed. You felt your cheeks heat up and you get under the covers, hoping to find refuge.
"Remember when we were three years old and you kissed me on the cheek?" You asked, staring at the ceiling.
"Yeah and you slapped me because I didn't give you candy first." Jonathan laughed.
Jonathan sat on your bed.
"Yeah, we were so young." You stare up at him.
"Yeah, so young. What happened?"
"You got handsome but I didn't change."
"No you didn't change," he said. "You got more beautiful."
"Jonathan," You breathe.
"I love you," Jonathan breathes onto your parted lips.
"Don't say that."
"But it is true, you know it."
"But-"
"Tell me this doesn't feel right. Like this is home, you and me."
"Jonathan, we aren't little kids anymore."
"I know. But you are my home, you are. Not Nancy, not anyone, you are.''
"Jonathan we can't."
"Why not?" He asks, eyes closed. His forehead was resting against yours.
"Because I can't lose you."
"You will never lose me."
"How do you know that?"
"Because I love you to much to leave you," He admits.
