You had done the best you could at looking as pretty as possible for your boyfriend this evening, as much as you could have done after spilling jelly over your white dress when your toddler demanded her PB&J sandwich.

Hurrying to the venue you had luckily made it on time, watching as Jonah stepped onto the carpet, holding hands with his co-star Halle and laughing. Most people assumed that you would be jealous and you could understand why. Halle was beautiful and you could tell that her and Jonah had a connection, but you trusted him. You trusted the both of them and you knew that it was just friendship. So you couldn’t do anything but smile, holding your toddler’s hand as your eyes followed him across the blue carpet.

You couldn’t be more proud of what he had achieved. Crouching down beside your daughter you wrapped your arms around the little girl. “Look, there’s Jonah,” you pointed him out to her and she looked in awe as she saw him walk alongside Ariel. Her mind lost in the magic of the movies as she refused to believe that it was not real, so you decided to let her. “They look pretty tonight, don’t you think?”

She shyly nodded her head, her tiny fingers playing with her bottom lip as she balanced her weight around a bit. “I wanna say hi,” she murmured.

“You can say hi after they’re done taking photos, okay?” you reply, hugging her a little tighter as you watched your boyfriend pose for his pictures. Your heart swelling with love just as it did the first time you saw him.

Lost in the moment you didn’t realize that your grip had loosened, but Y/D/N did notice and she took the opportunity to pull free from your grasp and run towards Jonah. Your eyes widening in a slight state of panic, hoping that he wouldn’t be too mad as you tried to explain to the security that the girl who slipped past them was your daughter.

As you were doing so, you failed to see your daughter clutch onto Jonah’s pants sleeve, looking up at him with wideset eyes, the same kind of adoration in her eyes that you had in yours when you looked at him.

She shyly turned her face away from the flashing camera’s, causing Jonah to chuckle quietly as he scooped the girl up into his arms, holding her on his hip and hiding her face away from the camera’s.

“Hey sweetie, where’s mommy?” he asked, his voice hushed to keep her calm. She pointed in your direction and Jonah followed the line of her finger to see you talking to the security guards who refused to let you through. “Is mommy in a bit of trouble? Should we help her?”

Your daughter shook her head ‘no’ with a mischievous little smile on her face, giggling softly as she held onto the collar of his shirt. Jonah chuckled quietly as well, tossing her up slightly to hold her more comfortably.

“No?”

“No,” she stated firmly. “I wanna be a famous star and mommy tells me I can’t because she doesn’t want me to say something embarrassing about you like how you always snore in the morning,” she explained, a crimson flushing across his cheeks as he hears a few photographers laughing softly, knowing they heard what she said. “and I think that that is- can I say a bad word?” she cut herself off mid-sentence and Jonah, thinking that it couldn’t be that bad as she was only so young, gave her a nod. “I think that that is fucking bullocks.” she finished, Jonah’s eyes widening in shock as he placed his free hand over his gaping mouth. Hearing laughing behind him, he turned towards Halle, silently begging her for advice on what he should do as he tried his best not to freak out.

Halle couldn’t stop laughing however, finding it adorable how the little girl who was dressed up as Ariel cursed with a soft voice and a heavy British accent. Even if you didn’t have the accent, she had began to pick it up from Jonah and you found it too adorable.

“Did you- did you hear that? Did she really just say that?” Jonah questioned in a state of internal panic, already trying to figure out how to explain to you that your daughter had used such language, and with his approval too. “Where did you learn to speak like that, missy?” he asked asked her, but quickly tried to come up with something else to talk about when he saw you walk up to him. Not wanting to have to explain this to you in such a public setting.

Your toddler, however, had very different plans… again.

“Fuck!” she exclaimed, a cute smile on her face as the photographers burst out laughing. You and Jonah looked at her in full-blown shock at the audacity of the normally shy girl.

“Y/D/N Y/D/M/N Y/L/N, where did you hear that?” you asked her sternly.

She didn’t look fazed at all, placing a hand on top of Jonah’s shaven head. “Daddy,” she answered and as you gave Jonah a scolding look he couldn’t help but smile widely.

“You taught her that kind of language?”

“She just called me ‘daddy’,” was all he said, the smile on his face only growing as he pressed a kiss against her cheek, his eyes watering from sheer happiness. “She called me daddy.”

“Y-Y/n, s-stop,” He giggled, as his partner started tickling him playfully . They giggled and couldn’t stop laughing as they continued to tickle their boyfriend.

“No, I haven’t been able to give you any tickles for two days.” They said, and started tickling him even more and he started tickling them back.

[Y/n]’s phone started ringing, and they picked it up while giggling answering it. Holding up the phone during the FaceTime call, “Hi, Melon..” They cooed, seeing their pet cat.

“Look at our son.” [Y/n] said, showing him the FaceTime of their cat. The cat ran towards the phone, and meowed seeing Jonah on the screen.

“Ah, he misses me.” Jonah said, how he missed his cat and wished he could pet him right now.

“I’ll be home soon, Melon.” He said, and the cat meowed pawing at the screen. “Awe, he really misses daddy.” They cooed, looking at their cat.

“Be good for grandma.” They said, and the cat purred as [Y/n]’s mother scratched behind his ear.

“Thanks mom, cya.” They said, hanging up and smiling as they gave Jonah a mischievous grin.

“Y/n, no.” He said, and they lunged towards him and he placed his hand on their forehead to stop them. He laughed, as they kept trying to lunge towards him. Making funny faces as they did so.

He couldn’t help but laugh as he looked at them, he loved moments like this with his significant other. Yes, he loved acting in movies and playing the characters he’s been casted as, but at the end of the day.

He couldn’t wait to go back home and cuddle with his significant other. “Your delaying the inevitable.” They said, sucking in their lips and stared at him.

“Oh really?” He said, and he stared at them. Before lunging towards them and tickling them back causing them to burst out into laughter. Tears rolling down their cheeks as he hit all their ticklish spots.

“J-Jonah *giggles* s-stop.” They laughed, and he didn’t continuing to tickle them. Until they stopped needing some air, and they smiled placing their hand on his cheek before giving him a peck on the lips.

“I love you,” they said smiling, and he smiled back giving them a peck on the lips as well.

“I love you too.” He said, and they smilied at each other.

Ok, just back from the live action The Little Mermaid.

And may I confidently say?

Best live-action Disney adaptation yet.

True, a low bar to clear, but this honestly felt like a movie and a love story, and not just a cash grab.

Every single changed scene had me smiling. Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) was amazing, and Halle Bailey truly is Ariel, I want her version to become the defacto in the Disney Princesses line because she feels sweet and clever and brave above and beyond the animated version.

(No offense to Jodi Benson, I love her, but the animated version is what it was and the new Ariel is just given more room to breathe.)

I think, comparing, my child self would love the animated spectacle more…

But my adult self loves the tighter, more in depth story of the live action more.

It feels like the best kind of fan fiction, one where someone who loves the characters asks “How were they feeling here? How can I expand this?”

And gives us those glimpses.

Not perfect, but definitely enough for me to fan girl.

Speaking of which… Spoilers below the cut.

Right from the opening scene, you see this movie is taking itself and the responsibility of the story seriously. I love the development of Eric, his camaraderie with the sailors while also being a good mix of level headed (don’t just harpoon mermaids) with reckless insanity (dude, you’re a prince, please don’t laugh while dangling by one arm over open water. ah, well, i love you anyway).

I can feel how much the film pulls back the special effects budget, especially making the introduction of Triton’s daughters basically a business meeting instead of the grand performance, but the filmmakers were smart enough to make the change work. I like the idea of each daughter being “manager” of a specific sea under daddy’s “CEO,” and it was a great excuse to give diversity to each sister.

Plus, I loved their banter/interaction while cleaning the shipwreck, they felt natural and I wish we could have had more time with them.

Speaking of natural!

As a writer I was listening to the exposition, and in my opinion it was exceptionally well done, especially for the amount they crammed into the beginning. Some of it was on-the-nose, but that was restricted to Grimsby, Sebastian, and Ursula, and felt character appropriate in each context.

There was an eye for why the character is saying something - “Am I supposed to tell the Queen her son died, and on his birthday?”; “A shipwreck brought you to us, and now a shipwreck almost took you away, I can’t stand this anymore!”

I didn’t fee like making Eric an adopted orphan of the royal family was necessary, but I loved both Jonah’s and Noma Dumezweni’s performances enough that I accept the filmmakers wanting to justify things and they do tie it in to Eric’s expanded character.

And that is 👌👌👌 he’s so sweet and adorkable and they manage to make his longing to see the world beyond his island mesh with Ariel’s longing for the surface world without it feeling forced.

You see them shyly come together over their shared feelings of isolation and longing for something they’ve only been able to glimpse, not experience.

Turning the ideas that Ursula is King Triton’s sister and Ariel’s mother was killed by humans into not just canon, but pertinent plot points, was excellent.

I wish we could have known more about her mother, but can I say I’m glad it was never revealed Ursula was actually responsible? I suspected that when it was clear Ursula had been banished around the time of the death, but it works so much better than it really was just one human that traumatized King Triton, and him having to overcome his hatred of humanity as a whole despite his lose.

Ursula pulling out the “I’m your Aunt, ‘Daddy’ has hurt me so much by refusing to understand me, too” was genius.

It especially helped with the fact that Ariel was going to refuse to sacrifice her entire life (realism!!) only to give in because of her anger in a moment of spite towards her father (realism!!!), especially with seeing their relationship and knowing that Ariel’s fear of being enclosed under her father’s constant watch was probably accurate.

As a song, “For the First Time” isn’t particularly special.

Including Ariel actively doubting her decision to come to land? Brilliant.

The entire day out and “Kiss the Girl” sequence is perfection, fight me.

Grimsby being an active shipper on deck?? 😍

I personally prefer Eric being the one to steer the ship in the climatic fight, but the detail of Ariel steering it because she’d witnessed him trying to save the ship in the beginning was nice symmetry.

The animal companions were done very well in my opinion: Scuttle was better handled than in the animation to me, Sebastian was perfect and they did a great job humanizing his design with his eyes compared to previous outings, and Flounder was - there. With Max.

Almost feel you could have cut the last two out and lost nothing except babbling to Triton at the beginning, Eric coulda saved the shipboy at the beginning…

(And yes Flounder’s “realistic” design does not improve in context, fortunately he’s on screen less than the animated characters with charisma)

I love the expansion of the prejudices on both sides; I wish it had been better explored at the end, but Queen Selina’s speech to her son about how his feelings for Ariel despite her being a “sea creature” (her initial fearful reaction) was beautiful.

Brain’s trickling down, it was an early showing, but you get the point.

It’s well worth watching the movie, and I’m up for rambling if anyone else is! 😊

Ava on your shoulders, her tiny legs on both sides of your neck. Her light brown hair tied up into two space afro puffs. Around her neck a seashell necklace that matched, Ursula. She wore a blue dress that you quickly made just for her to match. Halle’s Ariel on land outfit.

“Ava, stop squirming so much.” You said, and Ava not paying attention apologized. Her tiny hands touching the top of your head and ruining your hair do. That took you hours to do.

“You excited to see Ariel?” You asked, and Ava giggled excitedly. Ariel had been her favorite Disney Princess, seemingly from the moment she was born.

One day, around the time Ava was one year old. You turned on The Little Mermaid. Her eyes were immediately glued to the screen, and she started clapping and giggling whenever Ariel was on screen. She would point at the screen, struggling to say Ariel. Which ended up being her first words instead of mama.

“Yep, I’m excited she’s so pretty and looks just like me!” She shouted, excitedly. You were here supporting your boyfriend Jonah, who absolutely loved Ava and her rambunctious manor.

You remembered walking in on them, playing tea party. You couldn’t help but feel betrayed having not been invited. But loved seeing your daughter and your boyfriend, spend time with each other. Time your ex partner didn’t care nor want to give to your daughter.

After fifteen minutes, your shoulders started getting tired and you placed her on the ground for a bit. Holding both her hands, to make sure she doesn’t run off nor get lost.

When the crowd got louder, and the paparazzi as well. Before you knew it, she ran off through the crowd and towards the red carpet. Being so small she ran right past the security, and quickly grabbed onto Jonah’s pant leg.

Jonah froze seeing Ava, and immediately picked her up. “Ava what’re you doing here where’s mommy?” He asked, and the little girl wrapped her arms around Jonah. Some of the crowd letting out an awe.

“I missed you,” she frowned, and he smiled at her. “I missed you too.” And then she turned to look towards Halle and her eyes lit up.

“Ariel!” She shouted, excitedly and Halle couldn’t help but look at Ava in awe. Another child, happy to see themselves in the character always made her day.

“Hi, sweetie.” She said, giving the girl a small wave.

“Ava!”

“Alright, let’s get you back to mommy. Ariel and I have to get back to work.” He said, and she nodded smiling. You rushed towards the front of the crowd and by the rope, “Ava!” You said, smiling as Jonah handed you back your daughter.

“Sorry bout that.” You said, and he smiled, “Good job.” You said, and he smiled.

“Love you.” He said.

“Love you too.” You said smiling, as you looked at him.

“Bye bye daddy!” Ava said, as Jonah walked away and his heart melted as a smile grew across his face as he waved goodbye.

Ava had fallen asleep her body snuggled up against Jonah. Jonah and you, looked down at her in awe at how adorable she looks fast asleep. Her mouth opened letting out tiny snores and a wet spot on Jonah’s shirt from her drooling.

“She’s so cute.” He said, and you nodded looking down at her. Drool streamed down the side of her mouth, causing a wet spot to appear on Jonah’s shirt. Her mouth was open slightly revealing a missing tooth that was already, underneath her pillow.

She groaned slightly, as Jonah moved causing him to stop. Looking down at the small human sleeping on his lap. When suddenly… toot.

“She got that from you.” You said, looking at Jonah and he pursed his lips and looked away. You look towards the television pausing the movie, and looked back at your sleeping daughter.

“Our little Ava.” You cooed quietly, leaning your head against Jonah’s shoulder. He smiled, warmly at the small child on his lap. Despite not being her biological father he loved Ava as if she were his own.

Even, stood up for her when she didn’t want to go with her biological father when he appeared out of nowhere. He was calm at first but eventually grew angrier, as Ava’s biological father wanted his daughter to come with him but she didn’t. Wanting to spend time with Jonah, at the toy shop they were at…

“She’s had a busy day.” You said, gently running your fingers through his hair and he kissed the side of your forehead.

“Thank you, for sticking up for her he’s no father. Unlike you. You’ve been there more than he’s ever been and I’m happy you came into our lives.” You said, and he looked at you smiling before leaning in to kiss you.

Causing you to moan slightly into his mouth, you pulled back and smiled giving him a wink.

He grinned, gently picking Ava up and carrying her into her bedroom. Placing her gently onto her bed and placing the stuff animal in her arms.

He reached into his pocket, pulling out his wallet. Taking the tooth, and slid some money underneath her pillow. Before kissing her on the forehead saying goodnight. Ava opened her eyes, and quickly wrapped her arms around him he hugged back.

“Night night daddy.” She said, and he looked at her, “Night night my little Ava.” He said, tucking her in bed again watching as she closed her eyes.

After, leaving the room he rejoined you back in the living room. Let’s just say you two didn’t make it to the bedroom.

A/n: Jonah and reader have been dating for around couple months

Jonah and Ava, sat on the couch together watching Bluey. Particularly the Sleepytime episode, and as it neared its end. Jonah couldn’t help but get slightly choked up how of all things, a show made for kids making him emotional.

“Remember, I’ll always be here for you even if you can’t see me.”

“Because I love you.”

Ava sat on his lap holding her stuffed Ariel. “Alright, time for bed.” Jonah said, reaching for the remote and pausing the show. Walking towards the bathroom, he helped Ava brush her teeth and floss them.

He helped her get changed into her pajamas, and he helped tie her hair up and but on her bonnet. He carried her into her bedroom, and placed her on the bed. Pulling the covers over her, not before singing her a lullaby.

“I’m scared.” She mumbled, and he looked at her. “Why?” He asked, and she pouted her cheeks puffing up as she gripped her Ariel plush.

“I don’t wanna have nightmares.” She said, and he looked at her and smiled softly. “I don’t either but that’s something that just isn’t in our control.” He said, and she started shaking.

“Hey. Hey hey. It’s okay.” He said, holding her close to his side.

He looked at her, “Besides, you’ve got Ariel to protect you.” He said.

“Really?” She asked, her face red and he reached over grabbing tissues on her nightstand. “Yep, she’ll protect you I promise.” He said, taking the stuffy and making the best Ariel impression he could.

“I promise to protect princess Ava, while she sleeps.” He said, and she giggled looking at the plush. He handed it back to her, and she looked up at him.

She smiled, “I had a nightmare last night you left mommy and didn’t come back.” She said, frowning looking up at him.

“Are you going to leave me like daddy did?” She asked, her eyes watery and he looked at her in shock. He couldn’t help but feel bad for her, “Never, I’ll never leave you no matter what.” He said, and she smiled hearing this before laying back down in bed.

“I’ll always be here for you even if you can’t see me.” He said, looking down at her and she looked at him.

“Why?” She asked, and he smiled tucking her back in to bed. “Because I love you.” He said, and she smiled at him before sitting up and wrapping her arms around his neck.

“I love you too,” she said, he couldn’t help but smile while holding back tears and he lays her back down. Tucking her back in, “Goodnight Ava,” he said, planting a kiss on her forehead.

She yawned, snuggling into her covers. “Night night, daddy.” She said, and he froze and smiled as he walked towards the bedroom door.
