This 1880s Emile Pingat dress from the Met Museum is a perfect example of how velvet can completely change colour depending on the lighting. Now, what does that remind me of? Oh, yes…
I do still wonder why they chose green given brown would fit better with the rest of the costume. Maybe they thought it was brown? Which begs the question: is it green velvet that looks brown, or brown velvet that looks green?
