#jomie is returning

We all know that Drew and Daisy are generally regarded as polar opposites. In almost everyway personality wise. They are so different in that regard, that it's hard to see past.

Daisy is outwardly sweet, and caring. She'd never bully anyone, and until you get to know her it seems like she couldn't hurt a fly. She's extroverted, and soft around the edges. She's well known for just generally being kind.

Drew is the complete opposite. He's cruel, constantly saying thing he knows will cut deep to others. He's quiet, always having a stoic expression on his face. Or his signature death glare when he's mad. He's known for being a bully, and putting others down constantly.

Their differences are even visually represented in their color palette. Daisy with bright, pastel colors. The white in her hair, and the blues of her outfit. White in the innocent looking ruffles in her clothes as as well, and her bright blue or gray eyes. Where as Drew has a much darker color scheme. Dark purple/magenta hair. A black hoodie, dark pants and dark shoes. Brown eyes.

Daisy looks the innocent, angelic child. Where Drew gives Angsty, post emo phase, teenager.

The ultimate good in the series versus the ultimate bad. Darkness versus light, good versus evil. Characters who are seemingly the anti-thesis of each other.

Still despite this, they actually do have quite a few parallels to each other.

For one, they're both fiercely protective and loyal to those they care about.

We see this in Drew during the Jomies flashback sequence. They're all standing in the hall and one of Jakes former bullies walks up and starts to try and lay into him. He outwardly declares Jake a loser. Makes it known he wasn't exactly well liked.

And instead of abandoning him, Drew sticks up for him. This kid who we can assume he's only known at most a couple of weeks. Yet Drew had already grown fond of Jake, attached. So despite learning that Jake was considered a loser in Middle school, he stands up for him. Despite probably knowing Jake is someone he would've picked on, he turns on Jakes bullies.

Daisy actually gets a similar-ish scene in her own flashback sequence.

In that sequence we see her walking up to a lonely and sad Jake, sitting on the steps of the school by himself. She returns his notebook she found trashed, declaring his bullies to be the truly lame ones, and calling him cool. Despite just meeting him, despite hardly knowing him.

We also see her fight to help him. Going to Sean, learning about what occurred with the Music Club. We see her fired up, almost angry. She tells Jake he has to fight for what he wants.

In these instances, both characters are proving their loyalty to Jake, and their protectiveness over him. As well as their willingness to help him in situations were he cannot seemingly help himself.

They also parallel each other in terms of homelife.

I've heard from people that Rosy has confirmed that Drew does not have the best homelife. But just in case this is un true, I always put this disclaimer in here, that it's only what I've heard. So take it with a grain of salt. Regardless it serves me well here, so in case it is true I'm adding it. Even if its not that boy reeks of daddy issues, so I don't feel bad making assumptions or inferences.

Daisy, in show, also has a turbulent homelife. Talking about how she feels overwhelmed and pressured by her moms to overachieve and be perfect in everything.

They're both also insecure. Really, really insecure. I think where it differs is how they're insecure, and how they cover that insecurity.

Daisy is insecure about being imperfect. She feels like she might never be enough, as we've just established. This, obviously as a result of her bad home life. And to mask this insecurity, she takes on more activates. Does more to prove to the world she is perfect, and enough. Even if it burns her out. Even if she can't ever truly prove it to herself. She also puts on a mask of confidence. We rarely see her break down, just when she's with Sean. but every other time we see her, she seems perfectly self assured. Even though we know that's not the case. Lastly, she tosses herself into fixing other peoples problems. We see her do this with Jake, despite her own struggles we know her to be going through.

Drew is different. Drew is insecure about his relationships with other people, also as a result of his home life. He is scared he'll be abandoned by people, and is worried that if he loses control of those he cares about they'll really leave. To mask this, he projects his issues onto other people, bullying them. We see this when he calls Hailey a control freak, even though we all know he's the true control freak. And we really see him start to lash out as the series progresses, as the possibility of Jake leaving him grows larger and larger in his mind. And we see it in the 'Drake up' fight. When he feels Jake slipping once and for all, he snaps. And it's not pretty. And his defense mechanism in the end of it all, is to call his closest friend a freak, and walk away.

Despite they're different coping, masking methods, they both have insecurities sprouting from their home life.

There's honestly probably more, but I can't really remember them right now. If I do, I'll probably make a separate post.

I do believe though, that by paralleling Daisy to someone like Drew, it benefits her character. And vice versa.

By paralleling a character to someone who is seemingly opposite to them, you can get really interesting interpersonal dynamics. As well as an exploration into, in Daisy's case, darker parts of your character. It also gives her depth as a result.

Really these two just plague my mind. I really would like to see some interactions between them. I think they'd make a great duo, with so much story telling potential. So many routes to take this dynamic.

1.) What is on your mind right now? I should be writing. Or drawing. Or doing fucking anything other than slowly slipping into apathy. 

2.) Who are some of your closest friends? Nicole, who I have known since 8th grade, Josh (aka Fuckstick), who I am currently so incredibly angry at that it’s turned to numbness, and Jomi, who has not spoken to me in a very long time and may never again. Why do you think I’m always rambling on tumblr? :P

3.) Where’s somewhere you want to travel right now? Honestly, you’ve got me missing the bay. Or maybe it’s just that I’m looking around realizing I have no desire to stay in Chino permanently, and also no desire to return to LA.

4.) Favorite TV show/cartoon/anime/movie, and why’s it your favorite? Watchmen, because the Watchmen film is amazing and anyone who thinks otherwise is cordially invited to blow me. Treasure Planet, because it’s funny as hell, really cool visually, and just generally Good in terms of story and worldbuilding. (Also because John Rzeznik, back before John Rzeznik started phoning it in.) Gia, because somewhere along the line mmm Angelina Jolie turned into me finding this incredibly sad story just...really comforting.

5.) Is there someone you’re missing? ...see #2. Honestly, I’m missing my goddamn life, but it’s a bit late for that.

6.) What are three goals you have for your future? Buy a new (old) van, settle into a decent job where I at least somewhat fit in, get more involved in the haunt scene as a designer.

7.) What are three goals you have for yourself? ...I don’t think I have those sorts of goals.

8.) What are some of your deepest fears? Ehh. I’m most easily unnerved by weird sounds (like...witch house/trip hop stuff that’s just ominous noise but feels like it’s about to resolve into words you don’t wanna hear), super squicked out by squirmy things (think worms, not snakes, snakes are adorable), and slightly claustrophobic. I don’t think I have anything more deep-seated than that.  

9.) Favorite song at the moment? I’m having a re-obsession with the Moulettes’ “Devil of Mine.”

10.) Do you believe in the supernatural/paranormal? Yep.

11.) What experience haunts you to this day? I think this is long enough, don’t you? :)

Tell me about some albums you like?

I feel like I’m circling around in the same music at the moment and while it’s very good music I’m just gonna get tired of it at this rate.

I love experimental music of any genre, custom made instruments and concept albums, but I’m always open to give pretty much anything a listen. (Please only albums, no individual tracks)

Here have some fairly new albums I’m very excited about:

Rabbit Rabbit Radio - Black Inscription A concept album about the ocean. A bit gloomy but also playful and sweet. Extra good tracks: Nanomia Cara, Tether, Octopolis The Body - I Have Fought Against It, But I Can’t Any Longer The bleakest of bleak doom metal, but very creative about it. Extra good tracks: Can Carry No Weight, Partly Alive, An Urn And some old ones I always return to: Arcade Fire - Funeral Whimsical indie rock. Their debut album is still their best one. Extra good tracks: Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels), Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles), Wake Up Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Of Natural History Some of the most creative musicians I know of thought hm, let’s make an avant-garde metal album about Satan, the Unabomber and cockroaches. Extra good tracks: Phthisis, FC: The Freedom Club, Babydoctor The Mars Volta - Amputechture Crazy complicated prog rock with a latin influence and always incomprehensible lyrics. Extra good tracks: Tetragrammaton, Viscera Eyes, Day Of The Baphomets Oxbow - The Narcotic Story A concept album about addiction and hitting the absolute bottom. Blues metal, but not really. Extra good tracks: The Geometry Of Business, A Winner Every Time, It’s The Giving Not The Taking Man Man - Life Fantastic Alternative rock, pretty upbeat but with a dark sense of humor. Extra good tracks: Shameless, Bangkok Necktie, Life Fantastic Jomi Massage - Primitives Very gloomy and somehow elegant and kind of dorky about it at the same time. Extra good tracks: Animal Of Eden, A Fake Start Is Life, A Knot Of Broken/Not Broken 16 Horsepower - Hoarse Dark and aggressive alt-country. Kind of scary really. Extra good tracks: American Wheeze, South Pennsylvania Waltz, Brimstone Rock

Jomy Marcus Shin

CV: Mitsuki Saiga

He was a normal boy raised in the educational city of Ataraxia until he succeeded Soldier Blue’s title as leader of the Mu. Soldier Blue detected his great potential early on, and though Jomy could not accept that he was a Mu at first, he gradually came to distinguish himself as their leader.

Soldier Blue

CV: Tomokazu Sugita

The leader of the Mu who guided them on their voyage over the years. Sensing his impending death, he selected Jomy as his successor. However, he expended too much of his power in saving Jomy and fell into a long* slumber before reaching his dream of returning to Terra.

*The original uses 永い (with 永 meaning ‘eternal) instead of the usual 長い (meaning ‘long’).

Physis

CV: Sanae Kobayashi

A blind woman who uses tarot cards to predict the future and guide Blue and the others on their journey to Terra. She approached Keith because her memory of Terra was similar to his. However, she ended up helping him escape.

Captain Harley

CV: Jurota Kosugi

Captain of the Mu’s mothership, the Shangri-La. As Soldier Blue’s right hand man, he leads the Mu into battle where his strong decisiveness shows through.

I can't stop thinking about this, but I don't think I want Mai to die, actually. And while I know Agni doesn’t exist in atla (and Agnih isn’t a sun god/spirit in real life), He’s the closest equivalent i have.

When Yue was born silent, Arnook pleaded for her life, and Tui gave it to her. Water and the moon gives life. gives healing. gives love and community.

After Mai was born, her parents did the opposite.

Mai’s first sentence was “they need help!” and her first steps were towards the door and beggars outside, stopped only by her parents who wanted to keep her safe and her skin pale. By the time she was three, she was such a handful that several nannies and a few guards had quit. Ukano had wanted a mild-mannered human doll to complete the family portrait.

What he got was a little girl who was driven, ambitious, and above all, compassionate.

And that’s when he got an idea.

Water gives, but fire takes and consumes. Ukano and Michi demanded Agni take their daughter’s compassion and drive, so that she would be easier to raise, and in return, he would fuel himself with it. Agni agrees.

the next day, they take her to the back yard and leave her in the full sun for the first time. She stays out there for 6 hours. At the end, her skin is red and something is burned out of her. She goes in when Michi calls her in. She goes to bed when she’s told. She lets Azula put an apple on her head and light it on fire. She stays in Omashu with minimal complaint. She agrees to hunt her crush with none.

Agni couldn’t take all of her, of course. for one, no drive or compassion makes for an empty husk and an ineffective heir. not to mention, Agni himself would have been driven out of control with that much energy. But Mai is left mostly passive with only a smolder of will and desire, and that’s enough for Ukano.

fast forward to Jomi’s time.

Zuko is technically still firelord, but after a few years on the job, he unexpectedly appoints Mai as regent and disappeared.

the fire nation devolves into chaos as Mai flounders as regent, with a dozen advisors giving her contradictory orders, and she eventually falls back on her old “keep your head down and do whatever you’re told” habits.

to convince him to return to the throne and also to teach her firebending, Jomi tracks down Zuko, no longer going by Lee, but still helping with the Jasmine Dragon. He went against Iroh’s orders again, but he couldn’t be happier for his nephew.

Zuko explains that neither firelord nor master are his goals in life. all he wants is a quiet life with his Uncle. But when he hears of how Mai nearly sparked a war by signing two competing contracts, he agrees to return to the throne, but only long enough to give her time to find some spark in herself before officially appointing Mai as Firelord.

To help her, Jomi asks her why she’s so passive, to which Mai replies by complaining about her parents. Jomi then organizes a family meeting, wherein Ukano finally fesses up.

Mai wants to be angry. Part of her wants to feel the full force of the betrayal and let her anger out. But she can’t. No passion means no anger of consequence.

She knows it will hurt, but she goes with jomi anyway to take herself back.
