The late afternoon sun streamed through the wide windows of the gallery, painting streaks of amber and gold across the polished floor. You tightened your grip on your messenger bag as you stood near the entrance, the low hum of chatter filling the air. This wasn’t your usual scene. Most of the attendees were older, dressed in crisp linen suits and cocktail dresses, swirling glasses of wine in their hands as they discussed brushstrokes and color theory like seasoned critics.

You were only here because your art professor had insisted. “Your work deserves to be seen, Y/N,” she’d said. “And more importantly, you deserve to be proud of it.”

Easy for her to say. She didn’t have to stand here, face to face with strangers scrutinizing the most vulnerable parts of her soul. You glanced around the room, trying to spot your piece among the other works hanging on pristine white walls.

When you finally found it, your stomach twisted.

There it was—your painting, titled “After the Storm”. It was a raw, swirling mix of blues, grays, and muted greens, representing the chaos of grief and the tentative hope that followed. It had been born out of countless sleepless nights, the ghost of your sibling haunting every stroke.

Now, it hung on display for the world to see, a fragment of your heart exposed.

You considered sneaking out before anyone could notice you, but your resolve faltered when a voice nearby caught your attention.

Your stomach dropped as you turned toward the source of the voice. A tall man in a tailored blazer stood before your painting, his nose scrunched in mild disdain.

“Abstract, maybe,” he continued, tilting his head. “But I don’t see the skill. It’s just messy brushstrokes and a moody color palette. Anyone could slap that on a canvas.”

Before you could process the sting of his words, another voice cut in, this one bright and mocking.

“Maybe you should try slapping something on a canvas, then,” the stranger said. “See if anyone puts your crap in a gallery.”

You blinked in surprise as a young woman stepped into view, her presence magnetic and commanding. She had short, choppy hair tied into twin buns, with loose strands framing her angular face. Her black leather jacket clung to her frame, the silver zippers glinting under the gallery lights. She stood in stark contrast to the room’s muted tones, like a spark of rebellion in a sea of conformity.

The man bristled. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me.” She crossed her arms. “Art’s not about pleasing snobs like you. It’s about expression. Maybe try having an emotion sometime—it might help with your ‘critique.’”

The man sputtered, his face reddening, but he seemed to decide she wasn’t worth the argument. With a huff, he stalked off, muttering under his breath.

The gallery buzzed with whispers as the young woman turned back toward your painting, tilting her head slightly as she studied it.

“Ignore him,” she said casually, as if you were already part of the conversation. “It’s good. Better than anything he could do.”

You hesitated, unsure how to respond. “You think so?”

She glanced at you then, her green eyes sharp and appraising. “Yeah. It’s got feeling. People who don’t get that shouldn’t even be here.”

You felt a flush of warmth at her words, though you weren’t sure why. “Thanks. I… wasn’t expecting anyone to defend it like that.”

“Someone had to,” she said with a shrug. “Snobs like that piss me off.”

You laughed softly, despite yourself. “Yeah, me too.”

For a moment, she seemed to study you, her head tilted slightly. “This yours, then?” she asked, gesturing toward the painting.

You nodded, a little self-conscious. “Yeah.”

“Thought so,” she said. “You’ve got that whole ‘artist’ vibe. All quiet and thoughtful.”

“Is that supposed to be a compliment?”

“Depends. Do you take it as one?”

There was a teasing glint in her eye that made your cheeks warm. You weren’t used to people being this forward with you, especially not strangers.

Before you could answer, a gallery staff member approached you, holding a clipboard. “Excuse me, are you the artist of ‘After the Storm’?”

You nodded, your heart skipping.

“Someone’s expressed interest in purchasing it,” she said with a polite smile. “Would you like to discuss pricing?”

Your eyes widened. “Oh—um, sure.”

The staff member gestured for you to follow her, and you glanced back at the young woman, who raised a brow.

“Guess that’s my cue,” you said awkwardly.

“Go get your money, Picasso,” she said with a smirk. “You earned it.”

Later that evening, you found yourself replaying the encounter as you sat alone at a small café near the gallery. The offer to buy your painting had gone well—better than you expected, actually—but the highlight of the night wasn’t the sale. It was her.

You rolled your eyes, though a small smile tugged at your lips. “What are you doing here?”

“Coffee,” she said simply, gesturing to her cup. “Same as you, I guess. Or are you just here to brood?”

You gave her a look but couldn’t hold back a laugh. “I wasn’t brooding.”

“Sure,” she said, her smirk widening.

For a moment, the two of you sat in silence, the sounds of the café filling the space between you.

“So,” she said finally, breaking the quiet. “Do I get a name, or am I supposed to keep calling you Picasso?”

You hesitated. Something about her felt unpredictable, and you weren’t sure if giving her your name would invite trouble. But then again, what harm could it do?

“It’s Y/N,” you said.

“Y/N,” she repeated, testing it out. “Nice. I’m Jolyne.”

Jolyne laughed, the sound warm and unguarded. “Fair enough.”

Jolyne had used too much of her energy on manifesting Stone Free, as she clutched her side, she could see pools of blood accumulate in her palm. A flicker of her first member with Y/N kicked her back into consciousness, remembering how fast Bananarama was when cast, how it withstood insane damage whilst showing no signs of harming its user.

Chapter 2 - A Tangled Knot

The next morning, you couldn’t stop thinking about the strange whirlwind that was Jolyne Cujoh. Her boldness, her sharp green eyes, her easy confidence—it was like she’d stepped out of another world and crashed into yours, leaving ripples you didn’t quite know how to process.

You spent the morning sketching, trying to funnel the energy she left behind into your art. But everything you drew came out wrong—messy, directionless, and annoyingly full of scribbled shapes that vaguely resembled her smirk. Frustrated, you tossed your sketchbook aside and decided you needed some air.

The park down the street was your usual escape—a sprawling stretch of greenery dotted with weathered picnic tables and shady oaks. You found your usual spot under a massive tree, the sunlight filtering through the leaves in shifting patterns. It was quiet here, the hum of traffic just a distant murmur.

You pulled out your sketchbook and tried again, this time focusing on the soft sway of the branches and the way the light danced across the grass. Slowly, the lines began to flow.

“Hey, Picasso.”

You jumped, your pencil skidding across the page. Turning quickly, you found yourself face-to-face with the person you’d just spent the past hour failing to draw.

Jolyne stood a few feet away, hands in the pockets of her black jacket. She looked like she belonged anywhere but a peaceful park—her rough edges standing out against the serene backdrop.

“This is the second time you sneak up on me, is this some sort of habit?” you asked, trying to calm your racing heart.

“Maybe,” she said, grinning. “Or maybe you’re just easy to sneak up on.”

You rolled your eyes but couldn’t help the small smile tugging at your lips. “What are you doing here?”

“Walking,” she said, shrugging. “Saw you sitting here and figured I’d say hi. Didn’t expect you to freak out, though. What’re you drawing?”

You hesitated, feeling a sudden wave of self-consciousness. “Nothing, really. Just the trees.”

She raised a brow and sat down on the bench beside you, leaning over to peer at your sketchbook. “Looks like more than just trees to me. You’re good at this.”

Her compliment caught you off guard, and you shrugged awkwardly. “It’s just practice.”

“Yeah, but it’s good practice,” she insisted, her tone genuine. “You’ve got that whole eye-for-detail thing. I couldn’t draw like that if my life depended on it.”

You glanced at her, surprised by the sincerity in her voice. “Thanks.”

She leaned back, resting her arms on the top of the bench. “So, do you always hang out in parks sketching trees, or is this a special occasion?”

“It’s just… quiet here,” you said, unsure why you felt the need to explain yourself to her. “I like the space to think.”

Jolyne nodded as if she understood, though you couldn’t imagine her sitting still long enough to enjoy the quiet.

“I get that,” she said after a moment. “Sometimes you just need to get away, you know?”

“Yeah,” you said softly, feeling the weight of her words.

There was a pause, and then Jolyne turned to you, her expression shifting to something more mischievous. “You know what this park’s missing, though?”

“What?” you asked, wary of her tone.

“Coffee,” she said, standing abruptly. “C’mon. There’s a little spot around the corner. My treat.”

“Wait, what?” you said, scrambling to gather your things. “I didn’t—”

“You didn’t ask,” she said, cutting you off with a grin. “But I’m asking you. Let’s go.”

The coffee shop Jolyne dragged you to was small and unassuming, tucked between two larger buildings. It smelled like roasted beans and warm bread, and the hum of conversation filled the cozy space.

You followed her to the counter, where she ordered a black coffee for herself and waited for you to decide.

“Um… just a latte,” you said, still slightly dazed from how quickly this was happening.

Jolyne paid without hesitation and led you to a small table near the window. She leaned back in her chair, watching you with a casual curiosity as you sipped your drink.

“So,” she said after a moment, “what’s your deal?”

“My deal?” you repeated, confused.

“Yeah. Like, what’s your story? You just move here or something?”

You hesitated, not sure how much to share. “Kind of. I came here for art school.”

“Figures,” she said, smirking. “You’ve got that whole vibe going on.”

“Is that a good thing?”

“Depends,” she said, leaning forward. “Are you gonna start quoting Van Gogh at me or something?”

You laughed despite yourself. “No, but I could if you want.”

“Please don’t,” she said, wrinkling her nose. “So, art school, huh? How’s that going?”

“It’s… okay,” you said, stirring your drink absentmindedly. “It’s a lot of pressure sometimes, but I like it.”

Jolyne studied you for a moment, her expression softening. “You don’t sound like you like it.”

“It’s complicated,” you admitted. “I guess I just feel like I have to prove myself all the time. Like, if I mess up, it means I’m not good enough.”

“Sounds exhausting,” she said.

“It is,” you said quietly.

There was a pause, and then Jolyne said, “You don’t have to prove anything to anyone, you know.”

You looked up at her, surprised by the seriousness in her voice.

“I mean, look at me,” she said, smirking again. “I’m not proving anything to anyone, and I’m doing just fine.”

You couldn’t help but laugh. “That’s one way to look at it.”

“Damn right it is,” she said, raising her coffee cup in mock toast.

As the conversation continued, you found yourself relaxing more and more. Jolyne had a way of making you feel seen—like she wasn’t just listening to your words but actually hearing you. It was strange, and a little intimidating, but it was also… nice.

By the time you left the coffee shop, the sun was starting to set, casting the city in shades of orange and pink.

“Thanks for the coffee,” you said as you stepped onto the sidewalk.

“Anytime,” Jolyne said, slipping her hands into her pockets. “I’ll see you around, Picasso.”

You watched as she walked off, her confident stride disappearing into the crowd.

And for the first time in a long time, you found yourself looking forward to whatever came next.
