Knew nothing about this other than it was an action movie starring Kate Beckinsale, two things I’m in love with so why wouldn’t I watch it? Kate is incredibly charming in this role and makes a lot of the humor that wouldn’t normally work in this kind of movie work very well. This is kind of like the Jason Statham movie CRANK but the opposite. While watching this, I would have put money on it being based on a comic book but apparently it’s an original thing. I mean that as a compliment. The action sequences are pretty good, but unfortunately the story is just so darn predictable. There’s a good supporting cast. Stanley Tucci, Laverne Cox, Bobby Cannavale, and Jai Courtney do the best they can with what they’re given. But then (spoiler alert!) Susan Sarandon shows up at the end out of nowhere playing a Nick Fury type character to set up a potential sequel, it felt really forced, sometimes it’s okay to just make a standalone movie. I like Tanya Wexler’s directing, but I prefer her last film BUFFALOED, I highly recommend that one, it’s like a smaller, tamer, female led WOLF OF WALL STREET. I think she should make more movies like that, or at least find slightly more original stories if she’s going to stay within the action genre.
