“He was a very jolly man,” Jacob remembers of Ron. “He was peaceful. He didn’t seem to be weighed down and he had no ego. Grandpap could be stern, but in a gentle way. He would give you a look to get a message across. That look came right from the bottom of his soul. You could tell just from looking at him that he was tough.” That strength was exhibited whenever there was a family crisis. When Jacob was bitten by a family dog named Bear, Speirs put the dog down without hesitation. But so too was there room for compassion. When a grandchild once went to squash a large spider, Speirs intervened. “We don’t kill Black Widows,” he advised.
