I'm your huckleberry (Tombstone 1993) (Doc Holliday)
Description:
The joys of modern inventions and miracles are often taken for granted. Your hungry or thirsty? Get something from the fridge or make it. You need to go somewhere? Drive or call an uber. Your hurt? Go to the doctor.
Your bored? Watch a movie, play video games, watch videos on the internet, talk to people without ever leaving your house.
Some much time is in our hands... but back in the 19th century... you wouldn't last very long.
Diseases are rampant, gun violence is higher, no modern technology, barely any good medicine, almost all of your favorite food doesn't exist and most of the people are rude as hell. But... That doesn't mean all of them were so bad. Love was not something most people in this time really cared about. At least, in the town of Tombstone, Arizona.
After falling asleep with a nice looking stone you bought at a small stand at the carnival, your whole world becomes the opposite. Six people from the past discover you unconscious and alone in the blistering heat and offer help but it was their help that let you meet the most amazing man you've ever met.
John Henry "Doc" Holliday.
Chapter 15
Previous ~ Next
There would never be enough tears to let go for what happened two nights ago. Morgan was killed and Virgil lost the use of his left arm. When Doc heard about it he made sure you were ok and helped you and the Earps pack up. You were all leaving Tombstone and Morgans corpse would be taken to California for burial. It would be two days to get to get to Tucson at the train station and they wanted you to come with them but Wyatt had a different idea.
Wyatt had tried to have the cowboys sentenced for this but they were acquitted. Everyone knew they did it but they still got away with it. After the trial, Wyatt was fuming and had taken you and Doc aside. "I'm taking matters in my own hands. I need you both with me". You both agreed but so did Creek Johnson, Texas Jack and the cowboy known as Sherman McMasters. The same cowboy who gave up his title as cowboy the night that Morgan was murdered.
Wyatt was making sure that the wooden coffin of his brother was secured to the back of a wagon and only looked at Doc for a brief moment. You helped Mattie up to the back of the wagon as she then held Louisa close as she was still crying. Across the street was Josephine, who gave a glance to Wyatt and you, then she crossed the street and didn't dare to look back. "And so she walked out of our lives forever" you heard Doc say. Wyatt had gotten on the wagon that held his brothers coffin and you mounted up on Sylvie.
Wyatt started to move out with Virgil in his wagon right behind him and you following closely but Wyatt stopped his wagon in front of some of the cowboys, most noticeably Curly Bill, Johnny Ringo and Ike Clanton, and said, "Just wanna let you know it's over". Virgil stopped his wagon besides Wyatt's.
"Well... Bye" was all Curly Bill said.
"Smell that, Bill" Ringo said. "Smells like someone died". Curly Bill only laughed and you quickly responded with, "You better shut the fuck up, Ringo". Ringo only scoffed as some of the cowboys only raised their brows in confusion and slight shock. Wyatt continued the wagon and so did Virgil as you followed after them. You looked back at Doc for a moment and he gave you a blank stare. You did the same look and continued onward. The plan was simple but what was coming was putting you over the edge.
After two days, you all made it to the train station. Allie was about to guide you on the train but you stepped back. "(Y/n)? Come on".
"No. I'm not going".
"Oh, don't be ridiculous. Come now-"
"No, Allie" you said sternly. "I'm staying with Wyatt. I'm going with him". Allie and Louisa pretty much jumped off the train and Virgil and Mattie stood in place. "No! (Y/n), please, come with us" Louisa begged. "I lost Morgan and I will not lose you either"!
"I've made up my mind already, guys. I have to do this. Look, for so long, I never knew what to do with my life back home. But this, this is something I'm for certain gonna do". Louisa then hugged you tightly with Allie following along as well. You hugged them both so tightly, this may be the last time you'll ever see them. "I have to do this. I promise, I'll never forget any of you. I promise". The hug felt like it ended so soon and you wished it lasted longer but time wasn't on your side since the train was leaving. "Hey Virg" you said. "I don't get a hug from you" you faked gasped. "I thought you was my fwiend"!?
Virgil only laughed and stepped off the train to hug you with his only good arm. "I'm gonna miss you, old man".
"You don't know how much I'll miss you". You held onto him tightly and held back your tears so you wouldn't appear weak but a part of you was telling you that he wouldn't mind. But if you did start crying, you wouldn't stop. You said your goodbyes to Virgil and Mattie but Mattie didn't seem to care that much. You may not have been on the best of terms with her but you knew you'd still miss her.
They all got on the train and you went to go back to Doc who was on standby with Creek Johnson, Texas Jack and Sherman McMasters. Wyatt was further away down the station, waiting. And so were two cowboys. Frank Stillwell and Ike Clanton. "That's Virgil with the women" Frank said to Ike.
"He's mine" Ike replied and revealed he was carrying a shotgun. "Hey Mattie" Frank called out, "Where's Wyatt"?
"Right behind you, Stillwell".
Frank whipped around and was met with a shotgun blast to his chest which killed him instantly and making Ike drop his gun and get to the floor in fear. Virgil popped his head out the train window beside him to see what happened and Wyatt gave him a sendoff to which Virgil waved him off and wished him good luck. Wyatt still had his shotgun pointed at Ike with one hand as he approached him to then bring his boot up to his mouth and using his spur to slice his mouth. You, Doc, Creek Johnson, Texas Jack and McMasters came forward but still stood back.
"Alright, Clanton" Wyatt threatened. "You called down the thunder, well, now you got it"! Wyatt pulled his coat flap back to reveal a badge. "You see that? It says "United States Marshal"!
"Wyatt! Please don't kill me! Please" Ike begged so pathetically.
"Take a good look at him, Ike. 'Cause that's how you're gonna end up". Wyatt took a step towards Ike and put his boot on his neck, pinning him to the wooden platform. "The cowboys are finished! You understand me!? I see a red sash, I kill the man wearing it! So, run, you cur! Run"! Ike quickly got up and ran off. "Tell all the other Cur's the law's comin'! You tell 'em I'm comin'! And hell's comin' with me, ya hear! Hell's comin' with me"!

Subject: Rich's Blog
Hi to all -
Texas
State representative James Talarico (D) , who has a Masters in Education from Harvard, claims that 'modern science' shows that there are at least six genders, not the two we have known since the beginning of time. As it turns out, he was referring to a study that explained several very rare medical conditions, which produced physical abnormalities. Of course, he would like you to believe that these were the result of personal choice, not accidents of nature.
Houston
The DA there has decided to 'pardon' George Floyd for some of his previous crimes. That means we can now elevate him to sainthood. Please stop burning our cities and shooting people.
Investigate Covid
This gets better and better. One of the largest investors in the vaccines for this is Bill Gates. So, he has set up a committee to investigate this ailment and the treatments for it. Gosh, I wonder what they will discover?
Harry Truman
On March 12, 1947, Truman spoke to congress. Growing up in the shadow of FDR, Truman adopted some of the same ideas about the imperial presidency, and the use of Executive Orders to bypass congress and the courts. As he prepared for another of his agenda items, he told congress that "The American way of life is under assault by foreign powers that used terror and oppression, a controlled press, and radio. Fixed elections, and the suppression of personal freedom."
Does that sound familiar? Things never change much, do they?
Personal Identifying Information
We are concerned about Big Tech, and how totally intrusive they are into our personal lives and business. So is Europe. Only, they did something about it. Tech companies like Google and Facebook are not allowed to collect any information that can identify an individual, or target them for advertising, or sell their data. They get billion-dollar fines when caught.
Think of this like an analogy - it is okay to count the number of cars passing a certain point. That is information that can be used to plan roads and fix problems. But it is not okay to collect tag numbers of those cars, or take photos of the car and driver. You cannot target that driver for ads specific to his car or dress, or any other thing.
We could do that here, if congress was not on the take.
Arizona
The ballot recount is back! Democrats do not want this. The team will examine all ballots for all sorts of things. Are they on correct ballot paper? Are mail in ballots marked with folds? Are marks made by hand, or printed by machine? Are envelopes date stamped by the post office? And many other things. Democrats fear this, as it could reverse the election, which was won by a very slim margin. So, they filed a suit to block this review. The judge ruled that they could challenge the legality of a recount, but if they lost that challenge, then the party would be liable for all legal and court costs, plus a million dollar fine. They withdrew the challenge. But they just cannot let this happen! Other states are also considering a recount, like Georgia. Georgia had far more fraud than Arizona (best estimates are that 600,000 phony votes were cast - and Biden won the state by only 10,000.) So, democrats are 'judge shopping' to find one who will rule in their favor, as they did on the first round of challenges. Amazing how those Obama appointed judges all could not see any evidence of fraud, etc. Guess who is at the top of their wish list? A relative of Bill Gates.
Notice that Biden came right out and announced his mask mandates for everyone, forever. And, his plans to spend, spend, spend trillions of dollars we do not have. Got to get in all those agenda items before this election is overturned and he is gone, along with his handlers and lackeys.
Kamala Harris
The CARE packages given to illegal children include books - and one written by Kamala. Some wonder if she is profiting from this mess. Kamala says NO. And, the people who provide these kits also say that the books were 'donated', and no taxpayer money was spent on them, and Kamala did not make a profit. Well, at least not directly, and in a straightforward way. There are lots of ways to 'encourage' someone to purchase books, and then donate them via a third party.
Tennessee
Governor Bill Lee has announced an end to mask mandates and all the rest. He says that the pandemic is past, and this is now a manageable health condition. Fauci turned purple on hearing that news.
Alexandria, VA
Marlo Gonzeles, 26, died after being held down on the ground by police officers. This happened about the same time as the verdict in the Derek Chauvin case. Marlo was drunk and disorderly, very combative, and creating trouble all around. When pinned down by police, he expired.
Rudy Giuliani
Feds raided his NY apartment, seized his computers and electronics, etc. They are still seeking some evidence that Trump did something they did not like, and that Rudy helped him. I wonder if the officers wore black, and had the double lightning bolt symbol on their collars?
Summer Travel
Lots of people are thinking of taking to the road this summer, after this long year. But there may be a problem with gas shortages. Well, not the gas itself, there is plenty on hand. But there is a real shortage of drivers for the tanker trucks that fill your local stations. About 10% of fuel trucks are parked, for lack of drivers. Plan ahead, and avoid delays waiting for fuel.
Seal those Records!
The latest proposal from the looney left is to seal all previous criminal records, so that they are not used to impact, say, job applications, credit reports and employment opportunities for all those convicted of low-level non-violent crimes. I don't know, those are things I would want to know about a potential employee. A thief is just as deadly to business as an angry person who attacks others.
Sam Johnson
Sam was CEO of an on-line medical service called Visu Wells. He went to the prom to take photos, and came across a male wearing a floor length red dress, slit up the sides to show a little leg. Sam was not impressed, and said 'slanderous' things like 'you are a male, not a female. This is not manly.' The snowflake was so upset, he cried, and complained. Sam was fired from his job, for his 'insensitive' comments.
Delmar, Delaware
Here in Biden's back yard, a police officer was called because a man was threatening, and attacking his elderly neighbors. Due to 'defund the police', only one officer was sent. The perp, Randon Wilkerson, 30, was covered in gang tattoos, and trying to find a gun in the home of his elderly neighbors, so he could steal it. He had a rap sheet with 38 arrests for things like assault, burglary, and other crimes. The officer was sneak attacked, blindsided when he arrived, and severely beaten. Most of the neighbors, who had been watching all this, cowered in their homes. When the officer did not respond to calls, other officers came, and found a badly injured officer. They also easily found and arrested Randon. What sort of 'justice' will Biden give either party?

What to do if someone is having a panic attack
TW: Panic Attacks
Please note that Panic attacks are different for everyone. This post is just going to be general tips, and what helps me personally. If you have any tips to add, please do. If you have any questions, feel free to send me an ask.
What you should and shouldn’t do:
If someone is having a panic attack, you need to stay calm. If you're trying to calm someone down while your panicking, you could send them even deeper into a panic attack. The person can probably tell if you're freaking out, and two people panicking doesn't help either calm down. If you're panicking, it's also very hard to keep your voice even and calm, and sudden changes in tone/pitch/volume may startle someone, and that is the last thing you want to do to someone having a panic attack. Also, if you're not calm, you may say things that you don't mean, such as 'why did you have to freak out now' or 'now you're making me panic too'. If someone is having a panic attack, and if you make it seem as though they are doing something wrong (whether intentionally or not), they may go deeper into the attack, worrying about being an inconvenience.
If you can't stay calm or calm yourself down, you need to leave the situation. While it’s never a good idea to leave someone who is having a panic attack alone (as in leave the room/building they’re in while no one else is there) because they may hurt themselves, if you need a moment to breathe and calm yourself down, you should probably step out for a minute before you try to help them.
Don’t touch the person without making sure its ok first. Don’t just put your hand on their back without asking if you can touch them first. Depending on the person, situation, and/pr trigger, touching someone who is having a panic attack may only make them panic more, even if you warn them beforehand.
If they are in public move them to a more secluded area if possible. If someone goes into a panic attack on stage for instance, all the attention being on them probably won’t help. If you can, help them walk somewhere where all the attention isn't on them. If that isn't an option, whether because they’re uncomfortable with touch or there isn't anywhere to go, try to get the attention off of them. If there’s other people there, try to get them to move people away, or cause a distraction so people aren’t all focussing on the person panicking.
Avoid sudden movements/sounds/lights if possible. Sudden sounds/lights/movements may startle the person. Which as I stated, is one of the worst things that can happen to someone having a panic attack. If you have to shift/move, do so calmly and slowly, so they have time to process what’s happening. In a storm for example, if the thunder and lightning is startling them, try to make it so they can’t hear the thunder or see the lightning. (I’m using thunderstorms as an example because at times they can trigger me into a small attack)
Get them away from the trigger if possible. If you know the trigger (which you very well may not know, sometimes the person panicking doesn't even know what triggered it), Attempt to either move the person away from the trigger, or move the trigger away from the person. For example, if a large crowd causes the attack, it would be very hard for the person to calm down while still in that large crowd. So attempt to either move them out of the crowd, or to the edge where they’re not surrounded on all sides.
Make sure they know what you are doing. Just communicate with them about what you’re doing. If you’re going to rub their back to try and comfort them, tell them that you’re going to do that. This prevents you startling them.
Make sure they are ok with everything you are doing. Before you do anything (such as touch them, try to get them to move) just ask if that’s ok. Otherwise you may make them uncomfortable, which could make them panic more.
Don’t do anything they are even slightly uncomfortable with. Even things that the person would usually be pretty much fine with normally can make things much worse. If the person is having a panic attack, they are already very uncomfortable. So if you do something that they are even mildly uncomfortable with, it could be like what would normally be a simple tap is now a full force punch.
Try to calm them down. This one is fairly obvious, but I still wanted to put it on here so that this list could be as detailed and helpful as possible. Just try to get them to calm down. At the end of this post, I’ll add some things that help to calm people down.
Be clear with what you’re saying and asking. If you want to make sure that its ok to touch someone, don't just hover your hand over their arm and say “Is this ok?” If you do that, they may not be 100% sure as to what you’re asking, so they may just agree blindly, or panic more because they know they should be able to understand. When someone is having a panic attack, their mind gets clouded with the panic, so simple things that they should be able to process in a half a second, may be impossible, or very hard to process. Instead say “Can I touch you?” By being clear and direct with what your asking, you make it easier for the person to process exactly what it is you’re asking.
Warn them before you do anything loud/sudden/potentially triggering. If you have to yell, say to get someone’s attention or something, make sure you tell them that you’re going to yell. And if possible wait for them to respond (whether verbally or not). the yelling may still startle them, but if they know its going to happen, it may startle them less than if you just yelled.
Don’t force them to talk. In certain instances, the person may not be able/want to talk. If they don’t want to/can’t talk, then don’t force them. If you have to ask questions, ask them yes or no questions, or multiple choice. For example, if you need to ask if they want to go somewhere else or stay put, you can either A. Ask them “Do you want to stay here?” so that all they have to do is nod yes or no. or B. Ask them “Do you want to stay here, or go somewhere else? Hold up a 1 to stay here, or a 2 to go somewhere else.” Try to avoid the second one if possible, but sometimes you have to ask a question that isn’t yes or no.
How to help people calm down:
Have them breathe in for 4 seconds, hold their breath for 7 seconds, then breathe out for 8 seconds. It’s ok If the person can’t do this right away. When you’re having a panic attack, it can be difficult to breathe. Just reassure them that it’s ok and try again.
Have them breathe in for 4 seconds, hold their breath for 4 seconds, and breathe out for 4 seconds. I personally have never used this but I’ve heard its helpful.
Have them name 5 things they can see, 4 things they can touch, 3 things they can hear, 2 things they can smell, and one thing they can taste. If the person doesn't want to/cant talk, you can still do this one by asking them to just nod when they’ve got all the things they can see/touch ect.
Have them do the thing that Katniss does in book 3 (I think) of the hunger games. To people that aren’t hunger games fans, sorry if that header confused you. Basically just have them say their name, their age, where they are, and any random facts they can think of about themselves. (For example: My name is Jon Doe, I am 27 years old, I am at work, I’m from Austin, Texas, My best friend is Bob Johnson, My dad is Josh Doe, and my mom is Jane Doe [this is random info if you couldn't tell]). If the person isn’t a fan of hunger games, I wouldn’t recommend trying to get them to do this one while they’re panicking, because it’s a lot to process and explain. However, at some other point you can recommend it to them so they can use it when they have a panic attack.
These last two are gifs made to help people calm down.

RUN AWAY WITH ME : Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, California
It’s daunting to dive into a song that everyone knows. The “hit”. Will the song survive explication? Will explaining it will make it less good? I channel my inner fangirl, pretend I’m not myself (the person who ran through all of the various options of how the lyrics could play out, who knows all the other forks in the road of the lyric), and I realize the answer is “no”. So as the creator, I take a deep breath and say, ok, my tumbleweeds, you asked for it.
Literally. I conducted a super formal poll this week on Twitter and over 200 people voted and 40% wanted to know more about “Run Away with Me”. Trust me, i was with the “Last Week’s Alcohol” camp. LWAers, I’m coming for you.
I think the reason I feel hesitant about this song is because I feel like I’ve said all of it before. I’ve taught it in master classes. I’ve written countless emails to college seniors who have decided to use it for senior showcases. I’ve watched videos of senior showcase mashups like this pairing with “Prelude to an Angry Young Man” by Billy Joel to showcase a young man’s dancing abilities.
“Run Away with Me” has been around the block. It’s had its fair share of interpretations. What could I possibly say that you don’t already know?
ORIGIN
“Run Away with Me” was a song without a hook when it first appeared. I remember Brian playing a truly relentless melody on my aunt’s piano. The scansion was something like this:
"Let me be your ride, let me be your home, Let me be your favorite place We can make a life, we can find a road, we can drive like life is a race. Texas in a car, Kansas on a bus, long as it’s highway and us. Throw away the key. Run away with me.
I found it exhausting - this relentless energy of someone who is determined to connect. It was catchy as hell but busy and unappealing when you put words on it. I put together some dummy lyrics (we learned about those in “Say the Word”) to prove that the music didn’t work as well with lyrics on it. (These are not those lyrics. I mocked these up from memory. The rhythm really was very catchy.)
Brian cleared it out. He asked if a version that went like this:
“DA da DA da DA da da DA”
felt any better. It did. And that’s how we found the scansion that ultimately became,
“Let me be your ride out of town. Let me be the place that you hide.”
It did feel better. It felt doable. I didn’t have the same instinct that I had towards “Say the Word”. I didn’t hear the music and cry. But Brian knew that he’d hit something sticky and he was determined to find where this song fit in the show. He was determined it was for Adam. He thought it came late in the show - an 11 o’clock number. He knew nothing else.
When we found the phrase “Run away with me” the song clicked in for me. I don’t remember a lot about the process of coming up with the hook but I remember a lot about writing the lyrics.
I discovered Adam’s voice in writing this song, but it also felt like it already existed. There was something I always knew and loved about Adam. It was borne of watching boys in college who were in love with my supremely complicated and high strung female friends. It’s not to say they weren’t smart - some of them were very smart - but they weren’t molded the way my female friends were. I was surrounded by women who had chosen, at 18, to go to an all-women’s college. That requires a certain kind of cognition about the world around you. Many of these women dated men but were loud, proud feminists. They were grappling with their relationship with romance, with being “swept off your feet”, with the uneasy comfort of feeling protected by a boy who can’t protect you because you are too smart to believe that such protection exists.
Writing Adam, and this song in particular, was an act of grieving for the kind of girl I would never be. I would never fall for easy romance like the kind a sweet boy like Adam would offer me.
WHEN IN DOUBT, TAKE A SHOWER
I hit my first real flight of inspiration - a visit from Elizabeth Gilbert’s “genius” (if you haven’t watched her TED Talk, do) - as a lyricist in this song. You can also call it getting lucky.
This song is the reason I believe in taking showers when you’re stuck. It’s a more concentrated formula of my general antidote for “writer’s block”, which is something I refuse to acknowledge. Acknowledging writer’s block is a self-fulfilling prophesy. Its existence is in your mind to begin with, so your conjuring of it confirms its existence. My mom calls it “gathering periods”. Everyone has times when they need take in culture, writing, inspiration. You can’t ONLY write. You won’t have anything to write about. Sometimes you have to breathe and take in other people’s creative output.
That said, deadlines are deadlines and you’ve got to get your work done. Rather than say, “I’m spent / I’ll never write again”, you say, “I need a shower.” Or I need to vacuum. Or I need to go for a run (I should say this - I never say this). I had spent the morning chipping away at the chorus and the second verse of this song, when I stopped to take a shower. While I was washing my hair, I came up with the entire bridge - lyric and music and rhythm and everything. It appeared to me like a glorious all-inclusive vacation to Hawaii.
I wrote it down, dripping water on my bedroom floor. Sometimes you get lucky.
TECHNICAL STUFF
Above is a little cheat sheet. If you ever want to sing this song and you don’t want to screw up the words, I suggest you look at it. Musical Theater singers don’t always think about song structure and that’s a shame. It’s a tool in your tool belt (like learning to read music - or at minimum learn how to fake it - I’ll save that soapbox for another day). Without understanding structure, you’re stuck memorizing a song from start to finish and you’re bound to screw it up. With song structure, you can look at the way it’s built and say, OH, look at the sections that are the same. Look at the ones that are different.
Most importantly, if you ever have to sing this song and you have a music stand - THIS IS TRUE WHETHER OR NOT YOU HAVE THE MUSIC IN FRONT OF YOU - write down on a piece of paper in massive letters:
TEXAS ALABAMA MISSISSIPPI CALIFORNIA
I cannot tell you the number of top-rate performers I’ve given this advice to. The ones who do it, never go up on lyrics. The ones who don’t ALWAYS DO. Trust me. It’s the least I can offer after not giving you a single bit of help in the lyric itself. It’s not alphabetical or even east-to-west. (My personal way of remembering is that Texas and California are easy to remember and the middle two are in alphabetical order. I’ll give a prize to someone who comes up with a good pneumonic - (Tell Adam M[?] C[?]??). It is just the worst. Don’t be proud. Be smart. WRITE IT DOWN.
It’s not entirely my fault. In my first draft, the lyrics to each chorus were the same. You can thank Joe Church, Brian’s composition teacher (and my de facto composition teacher while Brian was at NYU), for the devilishly hard lyrics in the choruses. He pointed out (and I do think he was right) that the character needed to keep upping his ante over the course of the song. I think it’s one of the song’s great charms.
I went back and looked at the chorus again and it’s a weird one. It’s not like looking at baby pictures. I’m not embarrassed by this song but could I make the decisions I made back then if I were writing lyrics for this now? Look at this crazy rhyme scheme!
By “crazy rhyme scheme”, I mean almost-no-rhyme scheme; I mean barest possible minimum rhyme scheme. Please give me the pleasure of enumerating the rhymes for you:
Kerouac / back and key / me.
FIN.
How is that ok?? Why does that work?? I’ll tell you. It’s two-fold. 1. character. 2. proximity.
1. Character
Here I go again. Broken record. Write in character.
Adam works in his dad’s tire shop. He’s not literary. He’s not “smart”. This doesn’t mean he’s an idiot. Emotionally, he’s swimming in the depths. He’s empathetic. He’s kind. He’s generous. He’s really just about everything a person could ask for but he’s not a brainiac.
If you had the unabashed pleasure of seeing Jay Armstrong Johnson perform Adam in The Mad Ones, you know what a breath of fresh air Adam is. He has a beautiful soul, but he’s the butt of jokes. Sam loves him but she doesn’t take him particularly seriously. When he says “I’m not good with words”, it’s important that you believe him. He’s not. But he’s trying. He’s trying to meet her where she lives. He’s using her references. He’s speaking her language. He’s a foreigner in a foreign land.
Making him a “rhymer” would be all kinds of wrong. He’s not witty. He tries to be. He says things like “Texas in the summer is cool”, which a Tumblr fan from Texas pointed out is just not true. But Adam’s nervous. He’s trying. He’s saying things that are lame. He can’t say “Texas in the summer is cool” four times over the course of the song, because he realizes that it’s not true as soon as it comes out of his mouth. It was a dumb joke. He has to try new tactics. His tactics aren’t working.
In his perfect world, he would have sung “run away with me” once, and Sam would have said, “Ok” and they’d go. In a perfect world, he wouldn’t have to say anything. He would fix her flat tire. He would work hard to make her comfortable. But he’s living in the planet of Sam’s grief. Her empathy is turned off. She hadn’t thought of Adam and what he wanted or needed or how he was trying to connect to her in a long time. She’s whirling in the new information that he would be change what he wants (stability, to run his dad’s business) for her. She doesn’t know how to respond and so he’s left floundering in a sea of his own words.
2. Proximity
Hot tip. If you want to make it ok that you’re not rhyming a lot, rhyme close together. I am getting so much mileage out of “Jack Kerouac, looking back”. After five lines of no rhyme, you get two rhymes 3 syllables apart. Internal rhymes make up for writing a character who isn’t clever. It allows the writer to still exert some control over the lyric, some order in the face of a character’s chaos. In terms of character, it gives a sense of someone gaining momentum. Adam’s finally gaining traction. After five statements that go nowhere -
“Let me be your ride out of town. [new thought] Let me be the place that you hide. [new thought] We can make our lives on the go. [new thought] Run away with me. [new thought] Texas in the summer is cool. [ new thought] We’ll be on the road like Jack Kerouac looking back, Sam, you’re ready, let’s go anywhere. [building on that thought] Get the car packed and throw me the key. Run away with me.”
The first rhyme (Kerouac / back) is an indicator that he’s heading somewhere. He’s finding some textual rhythm. By the end of the chorus, he’s managed to put together a bit of a thesis - a little serve and return (key / me).
It gives him the courage to go on in spite of Sam’s silence. The whole song is about Sam’s silence. It’s about him getting so caught up in it in spite of her lack of response, trying to build a vision for what they could have together. You’ve been there, right? Those moments where it feels like if you just keep talking, you won’t have to face the possibility that you won’t be met halfway?
Time and time again, I read comments on YouTube and elsewhere: “I wish my name was Sam. I’d run away with you.” It’s essential that Adam’s desire for Sam is genuine and romantic and that his enthusiasm is infectious. You have to want her to want to go. But in the context of the show, you have to know that it will never work. She will never be able to say yes to him. She doesn’t know that before the song begins but by the time it ends, his fate is sealed. This isn’t actually a song about romance. Not for Sam. For Sam, who we’ve spent the last 75 minutes examining, this moment is filled with dread. You’re watching someone you love say all the things that make it impossible for you to be together.
I remember - after writing this song - having dinner with a guy I was dating. He wanted to take our relationship to the next stage and I met a simple question he asked me with silence and panic. He said “I just wanted you to say that we’d work out any of the problems.” I didn’t realize until he said it that I was creating hurdles for our relationship because I didn’t want to stay in the relationship but I also didn’t have the heart to tell him that I wasn’t thinking about forever. I was looking for my exit strategy. Just because you’re not right for each other doesn’t mean that you want to hurt the other person.
Of course the irony is that that’s exactly how you hurt someone. Sam is a classic introvert. She keeps everything to herself. She processes in her head (that’s the whole show). The sequel to The Mad Ones would be a whole hell of a lot of uncomfortable silence-filled conversations with the ones she leaves behind.
“ROMEO IS CALLING FOR JULIET”: A NAIL IN A COFFIN
You’re Adam. You’re not a brainiac. You say “Romeo is calling for Juliet” and you mean that you love her. You mean that she’s your soulmate.
Now you’re Sam. You’re analytical and literal and literary. You hear “Romeo is calling for Juliet”. You hear that you’re star-crossed, that you’re doomed.
Adam doesn’t know that when he says it but he feels the failure of his metaphor. All of his metaphors build a case against him. He talks about On the Road because Sam loves that book, because she romanticizes driving across the country, much like Sal does in On the Road. But Sal’s journey is solitary and obsessed not with Mary Lou (or any of the other women Sal sleeps with) but with Dean, his best friend. Sam is the same way.
INGENUE
I think a lot about ingenues in the musicals I write. How could I not? It’s a huge trope in musical theater, more in than in any other genre. There are even vocal registers that feel more “ingenue”. I grew up in high school, college, and community theater playing ingenues. I was the daughter, the wife, the literal ingenue in City of Angels.
I also identified with ingenues in movies. I liked them plucky but I always wanted them to get the guy - or, let’s be honest - I wanted the guy to get them.
Now, I only write ingenues when I can turn the idea on its head. Sam is not an ingenue. The story begins when her naïveté has been lost. If we told this story from the perspective from the beginning of her senior year, she would be the ingenue, but we tell the story from her moment before her rebellion. We are chronicling her journey away from ingenue.
Brian and I joked through the rehearsal process that our ingenue is actually Adam. But by definition #2, it’s pretty accurate. Ingenues are often only in the love plot of a musical. They generally have one great song in a show but someone else (a man traditionally) gets to be involved in the multi-plot of a show. Harold Hill pursues Marion, whose role is contained to her utility to his plot - his moral opposite, but Harold is involved in SEVERAL plots. Sarah has her dogmatic beliefs (also a moral opposite to Sky) but it’s Sky Masterson who transforms through his relationship with her and his connection to the gambling plot. Rosemary literally sings about how she will be happy to keep her husband’s dinner warm, while Finch climbs the ladder to success and falls in love in the most perfunctory way possible. (These are all shows that are structurally genius pieces of theater, by the way, they just suck when it comes feminine stereotypes.)
Adam is really happy with their static relationship. He doesn’t actually want anything else. He makes a big sacrifice by trying to imagine what Sam wants, and in order to pull her out of her grief, tries to give it to her. It’s an act of sacrifice and empathy. And he’s right. She does need to run away. Just not with him. And it takes him naming the idea for her to realize exactly what she needs.
Do you see what I love Adam? I wonder if men who wrote female ingenues felt the same way? You’re creating an idealized version of what the other sex should be so that your flawed (read: interesting) protagonist can grapple with the world around them. The exciting thing about creating this character was the attempt to manipulate the audience enough so that the audience would love him as much as I do but feel how deeply wrong it would be for Sam to say yes.
Miscellaneous Questions You Have Asked
Can I (a guy) pretend Sam is a boy and sing this song?
Why not? The “wife” line is a little weirder but I can justify it. There are a couple other pop versions of lyrics that are more generic that might be useful to you if you go that route.
Why are there pop lyrics to this song?
We love this song and we wanted more people to be able to cover it. The use of “Sam” in the lyric feels essential in the show. It makes the lyric feel more insistent. Out of context, it feels a little theatery. I like theater - don’t get me wrong - but the rest of the song doesn’t feel that way so it kind of takes you out of the song if you’re not listening in the context of the show. I like the pop lyrics to the song. You should feel free to use them anytime. Though, in an audition, I’d revert to the original lyrics. Immediacy / theatricality / insistence are your friend there.
Why does Adam say “let me be the place that you hide”? I got this question specifically from someone when I was soliciting questions. It must have been on Twitter because I can’t find it on Tumblr. I hope that the rest of this post helps illuminate the character broadly enough that this already feels clearer. It’s a problematic idea, isn’t it? It comes back to Adam offering comfort, offering protection, offering something that Sam might want but is ultimately wrong for her.
Can I record “Run Away with Me”?
Yes. Because it’s already been professionally recorded by us, by Josh Young, by Aaron Tveit, and Dwayne Britton (maybe others?), anyone can get the mechanical rights to record through Harry Fox. Huzzah!
Why are there so many versions of the final riffs and release of “Run Away with Me”?
When you get the chance to workshop a song as long as we have, you get to really hone what you want out of it. If you’re in doubt about whether or not you’re singing the most updated version, check out Ben Fankhauser’s version on Playbill. This is the one we went into production with in fall 2017.
Can a girl sing “Run Away with Me”?
Hell yeah. Carrie Manolakos covers it on our live album and it’s pretty sick, and here’s a new video of Emma Hunton’s take on it. You didn’t know how much you wanted this.

AN INTELLIGENT WOMAN RESPONDS SIMPLY TO THOSE OPPOSING COVID VACCINES AND OTHER PROTECTIONS
Janet is one who consistently reads my blog. Opinionated. Generally, intelligently.
Janet commented yesterday to my recent blog: Why?…..I Don’t Understand.
Her comment speaks for itself.
“People take their kids on a metal tube that goes 500 miles an hour at 36,000 feet without ever ‘doing their own research’ about who made the plane, who last serviced it, or even reading about the physics of air travel. They just trust that ‘big airplane’ knows what it is doing.
Cut the crap stupid!”
Texas Governor Abbott continues on his roll. His long “15 minutes.”
In his recent announcement, Abbott barred all coronavirus vaccine mandates in Texas, including private employers.
His statement claimed Biden is “bullying” people with his COVID comments and handling.
A Trump stalwart is Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wi).
Southwest Airlines cancelled most, if not all, of its fleet over the weekend. Some two thousand planes. The reason pilot “sick outs.” Pilots not sick, but wish to make a point to management.
The pilots are opposed to what they describe as “imposed mandates.” Get vaccinated or lose your job.
Johnson supports the pilots. I would have expected nothing less. He describes the walk out the “Great Rebellion” over vaccine mandates. He added, “Stop the mandates before more damage is done.”
The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association has sued their airline employer in federal court re the imposed mandate.
Some view the walk out as only the beginning. Intimating other airlines may follow.
Benny Johnson is an 18 year Southwest pilot. He said, “This is the single bravest thing I have seen in years. God bless them pilots. The heroes we need right now.”
Johnson views the confrontation as one involving “freedom of choice issues.”
A 10/10/21 Zerohedge article claims: “The U.S. is finally a banana republic: The top one percent now own more wealth than the entire middle class.” The situation represents “unprecedented wealth inequality.”
The last time such a situation existed was prior to the Great Depression.
The Key West Airport has outgrown itself for the third or fourth time in the years I have lived in Key West. Key West is at the point again where too many planes are coming in and going out.
A vastly remodeled airport is planned. Construction to soon start.
Hurricane Irma occurred just over four years ago on September 10, 2017.
Today for the first time I learned the air control tower has been down as a result of Irma. It cannot be used.
Air controllers are working across the tarmac in a tiny trailer and can’t see planes coming in and out.
How safe is that? Especially with the significant increase in air traffic.
A Citizens’ Voice comment this morning concerns the airport: “Dear airport noise/traffic complainers: You fools bought an overpriced house on an island where the airport is at most 2 miles from your house! Get over yourself!”
Tuesday again. Tonight my blog talk radio show Tuesday Talk with Key West Lou. Nine my time. Please join me. I rant and rave for a half hour re things that bother me. Helps relieve my concerns and frustrations. www.blogtalkradio.com/key-west-lou.

Are There More Republicans Or Democrats In The Us
More Than Half Of Young Americans Are Going Through An Extended Period Of Feeling Down Depressed Or Hopeless In Recent Weeks; 28% Have Had Thoughts That They Would Be Better Off Dead Or Of Hurting Themself In Some Way
Democrats Vs Republicans | What is the difference between Democrats and Republicans?
Fifty-one percent of young Americans say that at least several days in the last two weeks they have felt down, depressed, or hopeless19% say they feel this way more than half of the time. In addition, 68% have little energy, 59% say they have trouble with sleep, 52% find little pleasure in doing things. 49% have a poor appetite or are over-eating, 48% cite trouble concentrating, 32% are moving so slowly, or are fidgety to the point that others notice and 28% have had thoughts of self-harm
Among those most likely to experience bouts of severe depression triggering thoughts that they would be better off dead or hurting themself are young people of color , whites without a college experience , rural Americans , and young Americans not registered to vote .
In the last two weeks, 53% of college students have said that their mental health has been negatively impacted by school or work-related issues; overall 34% have been negatively impacted by the coronavirus, 29% self-image, 29% personal relationships, 28% social isolation, 25% economic concerns, 22% health concernsand 21% politics .
Voter Registration And State Political Control

The state Democratic or Republican Party controls the governorship, the state legislative houses, and U.S. Senate representation. Nebraska’s legislature is unicameral, i.e., it has only one legislative house and is officially non-partisan, though party affiliation still has an unofficial influence on the legislative process.
The simplest measure of party strength in a state voting population is the affiliation totals from voter registration for the 30 states and the District of Columbia as of 2019 that allow registered voters to indicate a party preference when registering to vote. 20 states do not include party preference with voter registration: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. The party affiliations in the party control table are obtained from state party registration figures where indicated. Only Wyoming has a majority of registered voters identifying themselves as Republicans; two states have a majority of registered voters identifying themselves as Democrats: and Kentucky .
Republicans Are Well Positioned To Take The House In 2022
Although we dont yet know the winners of some House races, we can already look ahead to the 2022 midterms and see a fairly straightforward path for the GOP to capture the House. Midterm elections historically go well for the party thats not in the White House, and the out-of-power party is especially likely to do well in the House, since every seat is up for election .
Since the end of World War II, the presidential party has lost an average of 27 House seats in midterm elections, as the chart below shows. No matter how many seats Democrats end up with after 2020s election at this point, they will probably end up somewhere in the low 220s a loss of that magnitude would easily be enough for Republicans to retake the House.
The recent history of midterms in a Democratic presidents first term seems especially promising for the GOP, too. Following Bill Clintons election in 1992, Democrats lost more than 50 seats in 1994, and after Barack Obama won the presidency in 2008, Democrats lost more than 60 seats.
If Democrats had added five to 10 seats this year, they could have survived a 20-seat loss in the midterms. Instead, Republicans will probably need to win fewer than 10 seats to gain a slender majority in 2022.

Political Difference Highest Among Younger Veterans
PRINCETON, NJ — Veterans are more likely to be Republican than are those of comparable ages who are not veterans. This Republican skew is at least minimally evident across all age groups, ranging from a 15-point difference in the percentage Republican between veterans and nonveterans in the 25-29 age group, to a 2-point difference in the 85+ group.
These results are based on an analysis of more than 138,000 interviews conducted as part of the Gallup Poll Daily tracking program since January of this year. Respondents were classified as veterans/active military based on an affirmative response to this question: “In the past or at the present time, are you or have you been a member of the United States military?” Fourteen percent of Americans indicate that they have served in the military in the past or are currently on active duty.
Ninety-one percent of those who have served in the military at some point in their lives are men. Looked at differently, over one-quarter — 27% — of men aged 18 and older say they are veterans or currently serving in the military, compared to just 2% of adult women.
These trends correspond directly to the status of the draft and wartime environment in which men came of age.

Gop Admins Had 38 Times More Criminal Convictions Than Democrats 1961
Democrats top row: President Obama, Clinton, Carter, Johnson, Kennedy. Republicans bottom row: President W. Bush, Bush, Reagan, Ford, Nixon.
This is the first in a five-part series on government corruption and how that corruption is investigated.
Republican administrations have vastly more corruption than Democratic administrations. We provide new research on the numbers to make the case.
We compared 28 years each of Democratic and Republican administrations, 1961-2016, five Presidents from each party. During that period Republicans scored eighteen times more individuals and entities indicted, thirty-eight times more convictions, and thirty-nine times more individuals who had prison time.
Given the at least 17 active investigations plaguing President Trump, he is on a path to exceed previous administrations, though the effects of White House obstruction, potential pardons, and the as-yet unknown impact of the GOPs selection of judges may limit investigations, subpoenas, prosecutions, etc. Of course, as we are comparing equal numbers of Presidents and years in office from the Democratic and Republican parties, the current President is not included.
Were aware some of our numbers differ from other totals, but we explain our criteria below.

In The 2012 Election Cycle More People Registered As Independent Voters Then As Republicans
Registered democrats have a 10,133,829 ballot request lead over registered republicans. But its also a sign of how centuries. There are now more registered independents than republicans, marking a first for the u.s. In the 2012 election cycle, more people registered as independent voters then as republicans. Congress: More Democrat Millionaires Than Republican And Heres Why
American Politics, News | | | |
In a report from AllGov.com, we learn that for the first time more than half of all members of Congress are millionaires. But whats really interesting about the story is that it tells us there are more Democrats than Republicans in Congress who are millionaires.
That is not surprising to some of us, but it might be to a lot of people who have bought the Democrat/lamestream media narrative that Republicans are the party of the rich.
Let me tell you why this really is.
First, lets understand there is nothing wrong with being a millionaire, or a billionaire for that matter. Contrary to what the rhetoric of the Democratic Party suggests, the vast majority of rich people have earned their fortunes by working hard and accomplishing things that have benefited others. That includes those who have made their money by investing, because they have put their capital at risk to help finance businesses that create jobs and produce goods and services people want and need.
Having said that, how can it be that there are more Democrat millionaires than Republican millionaires when everyone knows the conventional wisdom that Democrats are the party of the working man and Republicans are the party of the rich?
Because thats a load of crap, thats how.
New York City Voters Shifted From Republican Or Independent To Democratic Party Ahead Of Primary
Democrat from New Jersey reportedly plans to become Republican
Voters
The Democratic Party in New York has consistently grown its voter base over the years and has also drawn previously party-unaffiliated and Republican voters to its ranks. In the last year alone, more than 88,000 voters who either had no party registration or were registered with the Republican Party switched their affiliation to the Democrats, potentially creating a new bloc of voters that candidates may seek to woo in races such as the crowded and competitive primary contest to replace term-limited Mayor Bill de Blasio.
According to data from the state voter file analyzed by Prime New York, a political consulting firm, 67,965 unaffiliated voters and 20,528 Republicans joined the Democratic Party, for a total of 88,493 new Democrats. In that same period, 20,136 Democrats switched over to the Republican Party.
Just 209 voters from the Republican and Democratic Parties gave up their party affiliation and became so-called blank or independent voters.
New York has a closed primary system, where only those with a party affiliation can vote in party primary elections. With 3.7 million registered Democrats in the city as of February 21, compared to just over 566,000 Republicans and about 1.08 million independents, the Democratic primaries all but decide the winner of the general election as well, at least for almost all citywide, boroughwide, and district-specific seats.

More Nevadans Registered As Republicans Than Democrats Last Month Election Officials Say
LAS VEGAS Election officials say more Nevadans registered as Republicans last month than Democrats. Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske reported that the GOP gained 6,580 active registered voters in July.
The Democratic Party added 5,718 active registered voters voters. Democrats still hold a statewide voter registration advantage over Republicans in Nevada, comprising 38% of all active registered voters. Republicans make up 33%.
Unaffiliated voters are 23%. Overall, there are more than 1.6 million active registered voters in Nevada. Inactive registered voters are voters who generally do not have a current address on file with election officials. They are still eligible to cast ballots.
But Today A Survey By Ballot Access Shows There Are More Registered Independents Than Republicans Perhaps A Sign That Political Parties
However, democrats hold a slightly larger edge in leaned party identification over republicans now than in 2016 or 2015. Noted for expanding the federal government and battling big business, teddy roosevelt was a republican before forming the progressive party later in his career. Even if youd rather not commit to any particular party, you may find yourself wishing to support a specific democrat candidate when primaries come around. Indeed, part of the reason there are still many more registered democrats is that some southern and appalachian states have more registered democrats than republicans, even though. Altogether, there are 10 states with more registered independents than either democrats or republicans.
However, democrats actually come out ahead when it comes to fundraising for who are the richest politicians in washington? For example, in kentucky1 as of 8/15/2018, 49.8% of registered voters are democrats while only 41.6% are republicans. There are still way more registered democrats; Noted for expanding the federal government and battling big business, teddy roosevelt was a republican before forming the progressive party later in his career. There are a little more than 11,000 more registered democrats than republicans in cumberland county.
Voter registration is the requirement that a person eligible to vote registers on an electoral roll before that person is entitled or permitted to vote.

Can An Unregistered Voter Vote For Republicans Or Democrats During General Elections
Voting in a general election is the right of every citizen eighteen years of age or older. And yes, you dont have to be a registered member of either the Democratic or Republican Party to vote for a candidate during a federal, state, or local election.
However, your state may give you the privilege to state the political party you belong to on the voter registration card. But youre free to cast your vote for any candidate you prefer.
So, it also doesnt matter if you voted for Republicans in the previous election. You can switch sides and vote for Democrats in the upcoming election.
Nearly A Third Of Young Americans Say That Politics Has Gotten In The Way Of A Friendship; Differences Of Opinion On Race
Thirty-one percent of young Americans, but 37% of young Biden voters and 32% of young Trump voters say that politics has gotten in the way of a friendship before. Gender is not a strong predictor of whether or not politics has invaded personal space, but race and ethnicity are. Young whites are more likely than young Blacks to say that politics has gotten in the wayand nearly half of white Biden voters say politics has negatively impacted a friendship; 30% of white Trump voters say the same.
When young Americans were asked whether a difference of opinion on several political issues might impact a friendship, 44% of all young Americans said that they could not be friends with someone who disagreed with them on race relations. Sixty percent of Biden voters agreed with this sentiment, as did a majority of women and Blacks . Americans between 18 and 24 were more likely than those slightly older to feel that race relations would cause a problem with friendships. Differences of opinion on whether or not to support Trump was an issue for slightly more than a third , followed by immigration , police reform , abortion , climate change , and guns .

Crime And Capital Punishment
Republicans generally believe in harsher penalties when someone has committed a crime, including for selling illegal drugs. They also generally favor capital punishment and back a system with many layers to ensure the proper punishment has been meted out. Democrats are more progressive in their views, believing that crimes do not involve violence, such as selling drugs, should have lighter penalties and rehabilitation. They are also against capital punishment in any form.
List Of Current United States Governors
e
The following is a list of current governors of U.S. states and territories.
In the United States, a governor is the chief executive officer of a state or a territory. The partisan affiliations of American governors are close to being even among the fifty states. As of January 2021, there are 23 states with Democratic governors and 27 states with Republican governors. Additionally, three U.S. territories have Democratic governors, while one has a Republican governor. Pedro Pierluisi of Puerto Rico is a member of the New Progressive Party, although he is also affiliated with the Democratic Party.

Interview with The Nashvillains
We had the pleasure of interviewing Nashvillains over Zoom video!
Nashvillains, a powerhouse trio of musicians began in the mind of Brett Boyett. From the band’s inception Brett, Troy Johnson, and Scott Lindsey have sought to create a new musical landscape by blurring lines between genres, bending the rules of convention and expanding the boundaries of country music.
The Nashvillains hail from Katy Texas, Beaver Damn Kentucky and Evergreen Colorado. All 3 of these guys earned their stripes by playing honky-tonks, festivals and major stages through out The United States. They have all separately left their stamp in the music industry in different ways. They have written songs for country music royalty, feature films, and television shows, while individually pursing successful artist careers.
Being fans of country music, pop, R & B, and rock the trio decided to approach this project from a different creative angle by pulling from their individual influences and diverse experience. When asked to describe their sound in an interview after a packed performance they quickly responded, “dark country with ingredients of cinematic music, while at the same time invoking the sounds trail blazed by the legendary bands, Pink Floyd, The Eagles and Johnny Cash.”
This group from flyover America is unleashing their unique brand of music for fans who are eagerly craving something unique that parallels the contemporary sounds of country music radio.
We want to hear from you! Please email [email protected].

The execution of Rodney Reed has been stopped

Amid a growing movement to #FreeRodneyReed, an appeals court has ruled that new evidence must be considered.
An appeals court has stayed the execution of Rodney Reed, who was scheduled to be executed next week for a murder he says he did not commit.
On Friday, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles voted unanimously to delay Reed’s execution by 120 days; shortly after that, Court of Criminal Appeals in Texas ruled to also halt the execution and ordered that new evidence be considered by the court in which Reed was originally tried.
“At every turn we have asked for a hearing at which we can present the evidence, in full, of Rodney Reed’s innocence,” one of Reed’s lawyers, Bryce Benjet, told the New York Times. “So it is extremely rewarding that we can finally have a chance to fully present his case in court, so it can be determined that he did not commit this crime.”
In October, a new witness came forward claiming that it was not Reed who killed Stacy Stites in 1996, but her fiancé at the time, a former police officer named Jimmy Fennell. Reed’s lawyers and the Innocence Project, a nonprofit organization for criminal justice reform, filed an application for clemency with the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles following the sworn affidavit of Arthur Snow, who said Fennell confessed to the murder of Stites when the two men were in prison together. In addition to Snow’s testimony, several other witnesses have come forward with similar stories around Fennell and his disdain for his fiancé, a white woman who he suspected was sleeping with Reed, a black man, behind his back.
Reed, 51, has long admitted to having been in a romantic relationship with Stites, but at the time of the trial, no witness would corroborate the affair. Now, Stites’s cousin and a former coworker have both said the two were involved, according to the Innocence Project. Reed’s lawyers told the Times that other witnesses could still come forward and they may even subpoena Fennell. (Fennell’s attorney told the Times that his client maintains his innocence.)
National attention to Reed’s case — and the call to reexamine it — had grown in recent weeks. A petition on Change.org has garnered over half-a-million signatures asking for the execution to be stopped and a new trial ordered. Nearly 100 supporters of Reed also showed up to the capitol building in Austin, Texas, earlier this month to urge Gov. Greg Abbott to show clemency. Celebrities like Rihanna and Meek Mill have also urged the governor to free Reed.
16 days left and he will be executed for a crime he didn’t commit .. get more info here! #freerodneyreed https://t.co/Njm7QsTNtx pic.twitter.com/ifSGk6ssqg
— Meek Mill (@MeekMill) November 4, 2019
”Please @GovAbbott How can you execute a man when since his trial, substantial evidence that would exonerate Rodney Reed has come forward and even implicates the other person of interest. I URGE YOU TO DO THE RIGHT THING,” tweeted Kim Kardashian West, who also notably used her influence in the clemency cases of Alice Johnson and Cyntoia Brown in recent years.
Even Republicans, like Sen. Ted Cruz, stepped in to advocate for Reed, writing a letter to Gov. Abbott and the parole board asking to stay his execution, which was scheduled for Wednesday. With the court’s late-minute reprieve, the attention and advocacy seemed to have paid off.
Reed wasn’t the first suspect in Stites’s murder. It was her fiancé, Fennell.
In 1996, the body of 19-year-old Stacey Stites was found in a wooded area in Bastrop, Texas, having been assaulted, raped, and strangled. When the case was first opened, police initially questioned and suspected Fennell of committing the crime. Fennell went on to fail two lie detector tests administered by the police, but the DNA found on Stites’s body didn’t match Fennell’s.
That’s when the investigation shifted to Rodney Reed — his DNA was a match, according to police. Reed admitted that he and Stites were having a sexual relationship behind Fennell’s back but maintained that he was innocent and was not involved her in death. Despite having another viable suspect in Fennell, police arrested Reed. He was tried, found guilty of murder, and sentenced to death.
Now nearly 21 years since the verdict, much is in question following the new evidence obtained by Reed’s attorneys and the Innocence Project. On October 30, Snow filed a sworn affidavit stating that in 2010, Fennell admitted to killing Stites while the two men were both serving time at a DeWitt County, Texas, prison. According to the affidavit, Fennell, who was there on a rape conviction, was in need of protection from the Aryan Brotherhood, so he went to Snow, who was a brotherhood member, and confessed to the crime as a way to build trust.
“Toward the end of the conversation, Jimmy said confidently, ‘I had to kill my n*****-loving fiancé,’” Snow wrote in the affidavit. Snow said he later realized that Reed was serving time for Stites’s murder after reading an article about him; he has only come forward now after seeing a more recent story about Reed, he said.
Fennell’s attorney responded to Snow’s allegation by calling Snow a career criminal, according to CNN, and that following Fennell’s release for rape, his client has converted to Christianity and begun helping people with drug addictions.
However, others have also claimed in recent weeks that it was Fennell who killed Stites. Heather Stobbs, a cousin of Stites’s, now feels that Reed was wrongly convicted and even possibly framed. She told the Fox affiliate in Austin that she has no doubt in her mind that Fennell did it.
The movement to #FreeRobertReed spread wide
Even before Snow came forward, a social media movement started putting pressure on Gov. Abbott to release Reed. Kardashian West’s tweet plea came about a month ago. Meanwhile, Black-ish star Yara Shahidi quoted Audre Lorde in a tweet: “Without community there is no liberation,” urging people to sign the petition. Cyntoia Brown, who was granted clemency earlier this year for killing a man who had allegedly solicited her for sex as a teen, also tweeted out the petition for Reed’s clemency.
I just signed this petition to tell @GovAbbott to stop the execution of Rodney Reed. You should too! #FreeRodneyReed https://t.co/qOhsaEJGbH
— Cyntoia Brown Long (@cyntoia_brown) November 4, 2019
The biggest surprise, though, came from Republicans who also asked the governor to delay the execution. Sen. Cruz, along with seven fellow Republican state senators and eight Democrats, wrote Abbott and the parole board a letter on Wednesday asking them to look at the new evidence and witness testimony.
“If there’s a real question of innocence, the system needs to stop and look at the evidence, because an innocent man should be set free,” said Cruz.
While the pressure to stay Reed’s execution ultimately worked, cases like his have not historically ended in the inmate’s favor. According to a 2014 study, one in every 25 people with a death sentence is innocent. Between 1973 and 2014, 144 people on death row have been exonerated, or 1.6 percent of all death sentences. That means that many innocent people — over twice the number of those who’ve been spared — have likely been executed.
In a case similar to Reed’s, Troy Davis was executed in 2011 for killing a cop in the state of Georgia. According to the Innocence Project, the organization sent a letter to commute Davis’s sentence “due to serious questions about his guilt,” along with a petition with more than 660,000 signatures, shortly before his death. But in a 3-2 vote, the members of the Board of Pardons and Paroles ultimately rejected the clemency bid.
In Davis’s case, seven out of nine witnesses who aided in the guilty verdict all recanted their statements. Kimberly Davis, sister to Troy, told the Guardian, “If those seven witnesses were credible enough to put my brother on death row, then why weren’t they credible when they recanted?”
She added, “My brother was murdered by the state of Georgia. For the Troy Davises who came before him and the Troy Davises who will come after him, we want to stop the killing of innocent men.”
In recent years, lawmakers and the public have been forced to reckon with the harsh sentences and convictions of black people caught up in a biased justice system. A few of those cases have even ended redemption, like that of Brown and Alice Johnson, a great-grandmother who was serving a life sentence for drug-trafficking. The power of social media, protest, and petition created enough pressure to sway those in power to grant those women clemency. While Abbott hasn’t done the same for Reed, the courts have at least opened the doors, once again, to allow him to prove his innocence.
