Rigby’s legendary Rising Bite rifle returns
After an 82-year break, John Rigby & Co. has resumed building the iconic Rising Bite double rifle. So called because of its unique, and uniquely strong, vertical-bolt locking system, the Rising Bite was Rigby’s top model and one of the most famous double guns in the world a century ago. Regular Rising Bite production ended by 1914, after about a thousand had been produced; the costs of manufacturing had risen too far. The last original Rigby Rising Bite rifles – a pair, in .405 Winchester and .350 No. 2 calibres – were made by special order for the Maharaja of Karauli in 1932.
To ensure that new rifles are true continuations, Rigby precisely reverse-engineered a Rising Bite that had been delivered to the Maharana of Udaipur in 1902. That pristine action is being replicated in modern, top-quality steel with state-of-the-art technology and a master’s hand and eye.
At its London workshop, Rigby now has 21 Rising Bite rifles in production in .470 and .500 Nitro Express calibres. Many have already been reserved by hunters, collectors and enthusiasts. New Rising Bite rifles will take up to three years to make, and prices start at £95,000.
Under Marc Newton, Rigby’s Managing Director, the revival of the Rising Bite is being supervised by Ed Workman, Rigby’s head of production.
Marc Newton said: “These rifles are extremely special, very hard to make, and a once-in-a-lifetime purchase for collectors and connoisseurs of Rigby guns. I am delighted we have launched this exciting project and would like personally to thank everyone involved, particularly collector Davis Peterson and historian Steve Helsley, both in the United States. The Rising Bite brings all of the finest elements of the gunmakers’ skills to bear on wood and metal. That we are once again producing this benchmark rifle firmly cements John Rigby & Company in the London gunmaking premiership.”
The new Rising Bite will debut at Safari Club International 2016 in Las Vegas.

J. Rigby & Co collaborates with Mauser once again to create a new iconic firearm – The Big Game rifle
After months of speculation, London gunmaker John Rigby & Co. has finally unveiled its latest creation, a bolt action rifle appropriately named ‘The Big Game’.
As one of the oldest gunmakers in the world, the cult brand recently enjoyed a renaissance after joining forces with its old German ally, Mauser. Much to the delight of firearms enthusiasts, history has repeated itself, as this is the first time since before World War I that these manufacturing titans have collaborated on a project.
‘The Big Game’ is built on the Magnum Mauser action, which is based on the classic model 98 design. Many aspects of the original, including the much admired and copied extractor and three position flag safety, have been retained. The actions and barrels are supplied by Mauser then hand-finished by master cartsmen at the Rigby workshop in London. The guns are proofed in London and will carry the London proof mark as they did 100 years ago.
Available in a Single or Double Square Bridge version, ‘The Big Game’ offers professional and recreational hunters a more moderately priced alternative to the brand’s ‘London Best’ custom rifles. The Single Square Bridge model is the professional hunter’s rifle of choice. Available in .416” and .450” Rigby calibres, this edition is designed for use with express sights only. The action is fitted with the classic three-position flag safety and 22” barrel. Overall weight, unloaded, is 10lb 8oz, stock length 141/2” including a rubber recoil pad.
The Double Square Bridge modelis produced in .375” H&H and .416” Rigby calibres and with a 24” lightweight barrel this rifle is ideally suited for use with a telescopic sight. The Winchester style safety is in the horizontal position to facilitate the fitting of a variety of mounting systems on the machined bridges. Weight of the rifle unloaded is 10lb and stock length 14½” including red rubber recoil pad.
These stunning rifles boasts classic Rigby design features including robust, ergonomic stock shape with higher comb for better fit and absorption of recoil, plasma nitride finish to all metal surfaces resulting in a resilient, anti-glare and rust-resistant finish, Rigby express sights dovetailed directly onto the rib with a single fixed V and 2 folding leaves zeroed at 65, 150 and 250 yards and Rigby pattern magazine floor plate that allows the .416 rifles to hold four rounds in the magazine and another in the chamber. With hand engraved finishing touches, case hardened recoil bars and heat-blued extractor, this exceptional value rifle is a landmark in modern sporting firearms manufacturing.
Price: From UK £7,787 / US $13,558 / €9,270 inc VAT and Grade 5 wood.

John Rigby & Co officially opens brand new London showroom and workshop
London gunmaker John Rigby & Co held an African hunting themed reception and braii on Tuesday 20 May to mark the official opening of its new premises in Vauxhall, London.
More than 100 clients, journalists and members of the gun trade celebrated the move to the 3,200 square foot building, which includes a trophy filled gun room, workshop, stock oiling room and secure gun storage facility. The new premises is also home to the Rigby collection of vintage guns, fascinating memorabilia and 82 history-filled ledgers with entries dating back to 1798.
Attending the event was Bernard Knobel, CEO of Blaser Germany, who was representing the Mauser/Blaser group of which John Rigby & Co is now a part of. Guests enjoyed a braii of Kruger Cape Buffalo, Okahandja Ostrich, Kalahari Springbok and Etosha Burchell’s Zebra, washed down by Tusker lager from Kenya and The King’s Ginger liqueur.
Marc Newton, Rigby’s Managing Director, commented: “With the feel of a little piece of Africa in central London our new premises perfectly reflects our long-standing and noble heritage. Rigby is more than just a rifle, it is a religion. Our launch party was a very special event enabling us to welcome members of the UK gun trade, international journalists and Rigby enthusiasts to what is now Rigby’s ‘cathedral’”.
