Foundling names
At the Foundling Museum they have displays listing some of the new names given to the Foundlings when they arrived.
I was struck by how many of these were literary, historical or fanciful - a projection of the donors' fantasies on children - was this a kind thing to do or treating children a bit like naming a puppy? What did it mean to go through life saddled with the name Oliver Cromwell or William Shakespeare?
Names included:
Historical: Julius Caesar; Edward Plantagenet; Lambert Simnel; Edmund Ironside; Henry Agincourt; Emma Plantagenet
Tudor: Charles Brandon; Catherine Parr; Walter Raleigh; Francis Drake
Civil War: Oliver & Richard Cromwell; Edward Montagu; William Chillingworth
17thc/18th: Gilbert Sheldon; William Orange; Billy Culloden
Admirals: Admiral Benbow and Coram Benbow; Cloudesley Shovel
Literary: Robin Hood; Tom Jones and his love Sophia Western; Geoffrey Chaucer; Phillip Sydney; Alexander Pope; Nahum Tate; Samuel Johnson; William Shakespeare
Artists: Michael Angel; Inigo Jones; William Hogarth (possibly a bit confusing given his association with the hospital?); Anthony Vandyke; Peter Paul Reuben; Christopher Wren; Godfrey Kneller; Mary Addison; Richard Steel; John Dryden
Scientists: Francis Bacon; Edmund Halley
Virtues: Hopegood Helpless (a bit of puritanism coming in there perhaps?); Diana Thrifty; Prudence Friendly
Birds: Mary Dodo; Mary Swallow; Deborah Lark
Interesting to see one John Doe on the list as well - I thought this was a later, American thing.

Kathrine Knight Case.
Kathrine Knight’s toxic relationship
1986, shortly after her breakup with kellett, Kathrine Knight jumped into a whirlwind romance with David Saunders, Who is a local Miner.
A few months later, Saunders moved in with her and her two daughters. However, he kept his apartment, and Knight soon became incredibly jealous and suspicious about what he did when Knight wasn’t around. As with previous relationships, The one with Knight and Saunders became incredibly toxic and Violent.
At one point, A two month old dingo puppy, who was owned by Saunders, throat was slit right in front of him by Kathrine. She did it to show what he was capable of.
Still, they stayed together and even had a daughter a year later. Finally, Saunders left Kathrine very shortly after the birth of his daughter. She attempted to kill him with a pair of scissors.
Kathrine soon met a man named John Chillingworth. Him and Kathrine stayed together for three years and soon had a child. Eric, Knight’s first son. No violent incidents have been reported with their relationship, It very soon ended after Chillingworth learned that Knight has having an affair with a man named John Charles Thomas Price.
Knight’s violent relationship with John Price
The beginning of Knight’s and Price’s relationship was without complications. He had two older children who lived with him and very much seemed to like Knight. He made money, enough to keep Knight comfortable. They soon moved in together in 1995 and things were going very smoothly.
When Knight suggested they get married, he declined and Kathrine became violent.
Price was framed for stealing things from his mining company and got him fired, all done by Kathrine knight. Though, she initially got kicked out by Price. Months later, They started seeing each other again.
This time was different, John refused to let her move back in. And according to friends and neighbors, Knight’s violence began to increase.
February of 2000, an argument between John Charles Thomas Price and Kathrine Knight culminated with Knight’s attempt to stab him in the chest. Price put out a restraining order against Kathrine in an attempt to keep his children safe. Toward the near end of the month, Price let on his concern for his safety and told his co-workers that when or if he went missing it was only because Kathrine knight killed him.
He was right to be afraid.
Mutilation of John Price
February 29th of 2000, John Price came home from his day at work and did his usual routine of checking in with the neighbors, right before going to bed at 11 p.m. Knight shortly came home, made her dinner, watched TV, took a shower, and then went upstairs. When she went into the bedroom she woke Price, had sex with him, and John went back to bed.
Then, Kathrine reached up to a butcher knife from above her bed — when she had always kept them — and brutally stabbed Price 37 times. According to evidence, he woke during the attack but couldn’t fight her off.
He soon succumbed to his wounds.. Knight dragged his body down stairs, skinned him.. And hung his body from a meat hook that she had in her living room. She then decapitated him, cut him up into pieces and began to cook his body into a dish.
She made a dish for herself, with the half-discarded contents later found at the crime scene. Suggested that Knight couldn’t finish her meal.
She laid down next to the headless, mutilated body of Price, took a large amount of pills, and passed out.
The next morning when Price didn’t come to work, his co-workers heeded his warning and called the police. The police arrived to find a very gruesome crime scene and immediately detained the comatose Kathrine. When she woke up, she claimed to have no memory of the knight before.
In the kitchen of the home, police found Price’s head on the stove, boiling in a pot of vegetables. With that they also found two full plates each labeled with a name. In absolute horror, the police found realized Kathrine was planning to serve Price’s body parts to his children.
Knight, Never to be released
Despite her claims that she had no memory of the night Price was brutally murdered, Kathrine was quickly charged with his murder.
In October of 2001, her trial started, but it didn’t really get far. As for the reasons, they remain unclear. Knight plead guilty to the murder charge, And the judge adjourned the case without testimony.
She was escorted to prison the same day and the judge marked her papers to ‘never be released.’ for the first time in history, a woman was given life in prison without parole
