Number Seventeen (1932)

Movie #1,134 • TGI-HITCHCOCK!
Tumblr media
EVERY OTHER FRIDAY I’M REVIEWING THE COMPLETE WORKS OF ALFRED HITCHCOCK IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER
Tumblr media
This one is nearly unwatchable despite some cool visual work with light/shadows and fun miniatures. We’re dropped into an incomprehensible story and it’s unclear what, or whether any of this is supposed to be funny. Apparently, Hitchcock himself called the film a "disaster." I couldn’t even get through the full 64 (!) minute run-time. Sorry.

Ann Casson and John Stuart in Number Seventeen (Alfred Hitchcock, 1932) Cast: John Stuart, Leon M. Lion, Anne Grey, Donald Calthrop, Barry Jones, Ann Casson, Henry Caine, Garry Marsh. Screenplay: Alma Reville, Alfred Hitchcock, Rodney Ackland, based on a play by Joseph Jefferson Farjeon. Cinematography: Jack E. Cox, Bryan Langley.
For the first part of the film, a bunch of people stumble around a derelict house, and for the rest of it most of them get on a speeding train and scramble around in pursuit of a presumably valuable necklace. There's a woman who's supposed to be a deaf-mute but turns out not to be and a corpse that's supposed to be dead but isn't, along with a giddy ingenue who falls through the ceiling and a cockney derelict who is supposed to supply comic relief from the gun-waving and running about. He doesn't, but the actor who played him, Leon M. Lion, not only got top billing but also a credit as producer. In short, Number Seventeen is a total mess. That it's atmospherically staged and photographed and the runaway train sequence is exciting in a mindless way are the positive elements we can ascribe to Alfred Hitchcock, who really didn't want to do this film version of a popular play, but agreed to anyway, then tried to turn a play he thought filled with clichés into a comedy thriller. He later called it "a disaster," and he was right.

The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist
Artist: Bacchiacca (Italian, 1494 - 1557)
Genre: Religious Art
Francesco d'Ubertino Verdi, called Bachiacca. He is also known as Francesco Ubertini, il Bacchiacca. He was an Italian painter of the Renaissance whose work is characteristic of the Florentine Mannerist style.
Bachiacca was born and baptized in Florence on 1 March 1494 and died there on 5 October 1557
Bachiacca belonged to a family of at least five, and possibly as many as eight artists. His father Ubertino di Bartolomeo (ca. 1446/7-1505) was a goldsmith, his older brother Bartolomeo d'Ubertino Verdi (aka Baccio 1484-c.1526/9) was a painter, and his younger brother Antonio d'Ubertino Verdi (1499–1572)—who also called himself Bachiacca—was both an embroiderer and painter. Francesco's son Carlo di Francesco Verdi (-1569) painted and Antonio's son Bartolomeo d'Antonio Verdi (aka Baccino -1600) worked as an embroiderer. This latter generation probably continued to produce paintings and embroideries after Bachiacca's death and until the Verdi family extinguished about the year 1600.
Bachiacca apprenticed in Perugino's Florentine studio, and by 1515 began to collaborate with Andrea del Sarto, Jacopo Pontormo and Francesco Granacci on the decoration of cassone (chest), spalliera (wainscot), and other painted furnishings for the bedroom of Pierfrancesco Borgherini and Margherita Acciauoli. In 1523, he again participated with Andrea del Sarto, Franciabigio and Pontormo in the decoration of the antechamber of Giovanni Benintendi. While he established a reputation as a painter of predellas and small cabinet pictures, he eventually expanded his output to include large altarpieces, such as the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, now in Berlin.
In 1540, Bachiacca became an artist at the court of Duke Cosimo I de' Medici (reg. 1537-1574) and Duchess Eleanor of Toledo. In this capacity, Bachiacca was a colleague and peer of the most important Florentine artists of the age, including Pontormo, Bronzino, Francesco Salviati, Tribolo, Benvenuto Cellini, Baccio Bandinelli, and his in-law, the sculptor Giovanni Battista del Tasso.
Bachiacca's first major commission was to paint the walls and ceiling of the duke's private study with plants, animals and a landscape, which remain an important testimony of Cosimo's interest in botany and the natural sciences.

Reconstructing Utopia: Leslie Martin, Colin Lucas, and the Modernist Transformation of Wimbledon Park Estate

In the years following World War II, Britain embarked on an ambitious reconstruction effort to address the housing shortage and modernize its urban landscape. Central to this effort were the architects Leslie Martin and Colin Lucas, who worked within the Wandsworth Borough Architects Department and the London County Council (LCC). Their collaboration on the Wimbledon Park Estate exemplified the ideals of modernist architecture and urban planning, serving as a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design in post-war Britain.

Leslie Martin: Visionary of Modernism

Sir John Leslie Martin, born in 1908 in Manchester, was a luminary in the field of modernist architecture. Influenced by the works of Alvar Aalto, Martin was an advocate for the International Style, characterized by functionalism, simplicity, and the use of modern materials. After studying at Manchester University, Martin's career trajectory included teaching at the University of Hull and co-editing the avant-garde journal *Circle* with Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo. This journal championed abstract art and architecture, setting the stage for Martin's future contributions.
During World War II, Martin's role in supervising the reconstruction of bomb-damaged rail stations honed his skills in prefabricated design, which became a hallmark of his later work. His most notable project came in 1948 when Hugh Casson selected him to lead the design team for the Royal Festival Hall, the centerpiece of the Festival of Britain in 1951. This project cemented Martin's reputation and led to his appointment as Chief Architect of the LCC in 1953, where he nurtured emerging talents such as Colin St. John Wilson and James Stirling.

Colin Lucas: Innovator in Housing

Colin Anderson Lucas, born in 1906, brought a different yet complementary set of skills to the table. Educated at Cambridge University, Lucas initially worked in his father's construction company before forming the architectural practice Connell, Ward and Lucas. This firm was known for its modernist designs until it ceased operations at the onset of World War II. During the war, Lucas contributed to the British Research Station at Princes Risborough.
Post-war, Lucas joined the LCC, where he played a significant role in various housing schemes. His work on the Ackroydon Estate and the Roehampton Estate, the latter earning a RIBA bronze medal in 1959, showcased his commitment to innovative, functional housing solutions. Lucas's designs often incorporated prefabrication techniques, aligning with the urgent need for rapid construction in the post-war period.

Wimbledon Park Estate: A Modernist Vision

The Wimbledon Park Estate, developed between 1948 and 1952, was a quintessential example of the modernist approach to housing. Situated on ancient parkland with royal connections dating back to Henry VIII, the estate represented a radical departure from the historical context of its location. The park, once a deer hunting ground for James I and later landscaped by Capability Brown, was transformed into a vibrant residential area.
Under the guidance of Sir Hugh Casson, the Wimbledon Park Estate became a testing ground for new ideas in architecture and urban planning. The estate embodied the principles of modernism, with an emphasis on functionality, open spaces, and community living. The designs of Martin and Lucas, characterised by clean lines, flat roofs, and the use of concrete and glass, aimed to create a utopian vision of post-war living.

The Festival of Britain: Showcasing Modernism

The Festival of Britain in 1951, orchestrated by Hugh Casson, was a celebration of British art, culture, and innovation. The Royal Festival Hall, designed by Leslie Martin, stood as a symbol of the country's resilience and forward-looking spirit. The Wimbledon Park Estate, although not directly part of the festival, reflected the same ethos of renewal and optimism. It demonstrated how modernist principles could be applied to everyday living, offering a glimpse into a future where architecture played a central role in enhancing quality of life.

Conclusion: A Legacy of Modernist Bravado

Leslie Martin and Colin Lucas, through their work with the LCC and the development of the Wimbledon Park Estate, left an indelible mark on London's architectural landscape. Their designs, rooted in modernist ideals, not only addressed the immediate needs of post-war housing but also set a new standard for urban living. The Wimbledon Park Estate, with its historical roots and modernist transformation, stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of these visionary architects and their contribution to London's post-war renaissance.
