Okay so.

Joey (who is Race's cousin, 4 anyone who doesn't know :)) is specifically related 2 JB Race. I know that she'd technically be related 2 Marriott Race but her being related to JB Race makes the most sense in my writer head (also he's the Race I've been writing into this fic so) !! She says oyster the same way that Race does, and she's also the newsie that Spot sends after the seize the day fight <3 Her real name is Josephine !! She's about sixteen at the time of the strike :) & a lot of her clothes are hand me downs from Hildy

Hildy was the Brooklyn leader before Spot was, & in the canon in my head she isn't a newsie at the time of the strike !! Her real name is Hildegard, and she's one of around three brooklyn newsies with parents !!

Rafaela is from Queens !!! She sells in Brooklyn because like. all of her friends are there, and she stays in the lodging house at least two nights a week !! She, Ritz & Pips are the youngest brooklyn Newsies (not really a hc since she's canonically abt 14 but still) & she's. closest with Joey out of all of the brooklyn Newsies (& she was super close with Hildy) !!

I'm loving your Dawson's Creek Bughead AU! I was just wondering because you say it is based off of the show and Bughead is a very different couple to Joey x Pacey what made you want to write this for them? I know people see a lot of similarities with Riverdale and DC (I personally do not) but I'm interested to see what else in the fic you have based off of the show and if the dynamic works :)

First of all, thank you! I’m happy you’re enjoying it! 

I think, when people say they see similarities between shows, they’re mostly thinking of s1, which was a very different show from what it is now. 

Which I would personally agree with, the bones of teen shows often have the same vibe. It’s because it’s a formula that works. 

Let’s deep dive, doll:

You’ve got the All American Boy (he doesn’t have to be a jock, it’s almost certain that unless the show is centered around that sport, if he is, it’ll be a background plot at most, who has solid parent(s) (even if they have their issues) who is almost guaranteed to have some sort of tortured art that inspires him (music, film, writing). 

The Girl Next Door who is virginal, friends with the boys, and beautiful. Only, she’s usually got a crush on the guy who doesn’t notice she’s a Real Girl™. She’s not good with other females fairly regularly, she’s smart, she’s talented, she’s passionate, etc. She often has a terrible home life/money issues. 

The New Girl (aka the The Whore to the Girl Next Door’s Madonna) who is often sexual, wealthier, and sent to change her wicked ways (or the family needs a new start) and the All American Boy is immediately smitten. She usually wants to be friends with The Girl Next Door for various reasons. 

And, last but not least because this guy is almost always the fave male: The Sarcastic Best Friend to the All American Boy. He's snarky immediately. He usually has a bad home life. His backstory gets more and more tragic. He’s witty and smarter than he lets on. He always has the most character growth of any male in the cast. He also often ends up in love with The Girl Next Door with a tendency to punch people who insult her. Add a dash of a badly executed triangle trope that mediocre male writers continue to do because they think people care about their male lead. He and the Girl Next Door usually end up together in the end. Because these are the most relatable characters and more people get invested in them than anyone else. 

Sarcastic BFF Activated: 

So, when you take the bones of what Riverdale gave us in s1, I can see the DC parallels. I won’t say the dynamic looks anything like it now because Riverdale as a show is like 2020′s less horrifying little sister, 2019, a mess, but not the worst thing I’ve seen.  

With all that being said, I spent a year planning this fic so I’ve thought a lot about what you’re asking, ha. Maybe too much. My goal was to never rewrite DC s3 with Riverdale characters, it was to take the similarities and tropes and work them to fit bughead in a Joey/Pacey way using s3 as an inspiration. I think it’s noticeable by now how I’m changing things. Or at least I hope. As someone who writes for fun, I look more at tropes and intentions vs what’s shoved in my face with exposition and plot twists and at first, I thought about making Jughead the Joey character would work but then he got a drunken Sheriff father who has a tendency to put his hands on him. And then Betty had a criminal father. Okay. So I decided to do the Betty as Joey/Jughead as Pacey route. 

I wanted two things from this: I wanted people who’ve never seen DC to be able to read it and I wanted it to feel organic to Riverdale’s location. So they’re in Riverdale and I’m twisting a lot of who did what and when to make it feel more natural. Jughead, for example, would feel more guilt than Betty when it comes to Archie. That’s established in s1 of RD. Jughead isn’t getting a boat because what would he do with a boat? But Betty is canonically a gearhead so why not give him a truck? Why not have her give it to him, it establishes Betty’s generosity that’s all over canon. Pacey pines pretty heavily for Joey in s3, which seems fairly Jughead adjacent, so I’m rolling with the idea that he’s been pining for a good while. 

Having a serious ex-gf the way Pacey had wouldn’t work for Jughead in a story with s1 RD vibes so I eliminated the Andie aspect. Not because I disliked Andie but because she’d feel out of place and I think keeping the feeling of Jughead as himself is more important than forcing a character into the story because she’s in DC, you know? 

Also, Jen isn’t Veronica. Veronica is much more interested in being Betty’s friend vs the way Jen tried and failed to be diplomatic with everyone in s3. She was supportive of Pacey’s feelings when she found out but Veronica is far too invested in Betty to let it play out the way Jen did. 

So, planning it out, I saw a way to take iconic moments that give a DC vibe and use them in a way that stayed true to the way I write bughead while keeping them in an RD world. All I can do after that is hope I succeed.
