Noah Dowe at MMFA:
Right-wing media have amplified conspiracy theories and bigotry from Ultimate Fighting Championship figures including UFC President Dana White and a number of high-profile fighters.  In doing so, these media platforms have mirrored former President Donald Trump's efforts to use the prizefighting league to boost his 2024 campaign. They’ve also provided a megaphone for White and his current and former fighters — some of whom have expressed support for QAnon and claimed the U.S. government orchestrates mass shootings — to espouse racism, anti-LGBTQ bigotry, false claims of election fraud, and a claim that Pfizer-sponsored athletes are “taking handouts from the devil.”
UFC fighters have delved into right-wing politics and fringe conspiracy theories like QAnon, finding allies in conservative media
An MMA journalist noted that a number of UFC fighters have repeatedly used their public platforms to court conservative fans and endorse extreme right-wing conspiracy theories, including QAnon. MMA journalist Karim Zidan has reported that dozens of MMA figures have embraced fringe beliefs like QAnon, COVID-19 conspiracy theories, mass shooting denialism, and even 9/11 trutherism. He has written: “MMA's embrace of outsider sports fans and right-wing politicians has helped create a wave of athletes activating around extremist causes and conspiracies.” [Bloody Elbow, 9/15/20; Global Sport Matters, 10/20/22]
Former President Donald Trump employed endorsements from UFC fighters in the 2020 election and now sees the organization as a major component of his 2024 campaign, as his team hopes to target “young male audiences with little interest in politics.” During the 2020 election cycle, a number of fighters endorsed Trump and joined campaign events like the Trump Jr.-led “Fighters Against Socialism” bus tour; the former president’s 2024 campaign is now doubling down on this strategy, which Trump aides say “puts him in front of potential voters who may not closely follow politics or engage with traditional news sources.” [Politico, 10/29/20; The Guardian, 8/5/23; The Associated Press, 12/15/23]
Right-wing media have previously defended bigoted commentary from UFC fighters, even backing middleweight Sean Strickland after he described being transgender as “a mental fucking illness” and suggested he would have “failed as a man” if he reared a gay son. A number of right-wing figures, including podcaster Steve Bannon and white nationalist Nick Fuentes, also championed UFC star Conor McGregor after his anti-immigrant commentary came under investigation by Irish authorities last year; Fuentes notably told McGregor to “rise up” because “it’s either going to be the Irish or it’s going to be the blacks. Only one side is going to come out of this alive.” [Media Matters, 11/30/23, 1/31/24; Sports Politika, 11/30/23]
Outside of direct interviews with these fighters and figures, some right-wing media have attempted to harness what Bannon’s War Room called “one of the last patriotic sports left” for political gain. Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, for example, has advocated for the Republican Party to embrace “the alpha male culture of Joe Rogan, Dana White, and the UFC” in order to “win over millions of other voters,” even suggesting he would contact White in an effort to “get voter registration and ballot chasing at every one of these UFC fights.” [Bloody Elbow, 4/14/21; Real America’s Voice, The Charlie Kirk Show, 7/10/23, 6/3/24]
Dana White
UFC President Dana White is a Trump ally and donor who has repeatedly used the organization to benefit the former president’s political ambitions. Besides directly endorsing Trump at the 2020 Republican National Convention, Karim Zidan reported in September 2020 that “White, along with a select group of UFC fighter[s],” had “spent the last few months advocating for the incumbent president in an attempt to ensure his re-election. From campaign rallies and bus tours, to TV appearances and ad spots, the UFC went to great lengths to campaign for Trump.” [The Guardian, 8/23/20; Bloody Elbow, 11/11/20; The New York Times, 5/12/20]
The UFC continues to be a bastion of right-wing extremism, conspiracy theories, and bigotry. Dana White, Joe Rogan, and co. set the tone for that style.

UFC 287: Adesanya VS Pereira 2 Preview
Tumblr media
I am getting really tired of these “hole in my stomach” feelings heading into these UFC fights and I can only hope that Kamaru Usman was the worst of it.
Israel Adesanya is my final hope.
At one time 3 African fighters held championships in the UFC, and now none do.  Adesanya’s UFC 287 rematch represents the last hope to restore some glory to the continent, and it couldn’t be against a worse opponent.
youtube
For all intents and purposes, Alex Pereira is a beast. Every time I see him, he reminds me of Tong-Po, from the Jan Claude Van Damme movies because he is an absolute villain and a beast of a fighter.
However, the fact that he’s a beast, is exactly the problem.
Several people within MMA, as well as anyone with eyes in their head, knows that Alex Pereira is not a natural middleweight.
The reality is that, for the 3rd time Adesanya is being matched up with a guy that’s the size of a light heavyweight, and that’s what the UFC has resorted to in order to find some way to displace arguably the greatest middleweight of all time.
youtube
What this brings in to question, is how much should a fighter be allowed to cut weight.
As good a Pereira looks, I have him placed alongside Khamzat Chimaev in the category of weight bully fighters, who really should be competting in heavier weight divisions but are able to cut weight to be considered middleweight and welterweight respectively.
I have no interest in watching weight bully nonsense.
Take for instance, the boy, Jon Jones, I have mixed feelings about Jon Jones personally, but he did move up in weight to compete at heavy.
The issue with expecting everyone to do that, is that, gianing weight or moving up, takes longer than losing weight or cutting weight. It’s an issue others have pondered and Chael Sonnen has gone as far as to call it sanctioned cheating, when a fighter is cutting too much weight and essentially giving themselves an edge provided they can maintain a certain level of strength and conditioning.
Tumblr media
And to add another layer, there is the actual history between Adesanya and Pereira, a history that spans almost 10 years in 2 different combat disciplines.
The stat that obviously haunts the Adesanya fans, like myself, going in to this one is the fact that Adesanya is 0-3 against Pereira throughout thier pro careers in Kickboxing and MMA.
That’s the issue here.  Alex Pereira takes away, or at the very least evens out the advantage Izzy usually has in in the stand-up game.
Jorge Masvidal was on the Joe Rogan podcast, and he noted Pereira’s size and how that serves to also negates the takedown option as far as Izzy is concerned. In the same interview, Jorge Masvidal also talks about the difference in speed and power when you are moving up in weight.
Personally, I have a bunch of issues with this.
Alex Pereira has a 7-1 record in MMA, and I honestly think his road to a championship opportunity was shortnened by the fact that Izzy was the champ in his division and he beat him in Kickboxing.
Pereira has not beaten any of the other top middleweights in the division and while I think that has more to do with match making and the UFC maintaining fan interest by ensuring new fights in the event of a Pereira victory, it’s a shortcut for sure.
The stats from thier first encounter at UFC 281 paint a slightly more rosy picture, and show Izzy winning the 2nd, 3rd round and 4th rounds after and even first round, before Pereira pulls off one of the great 5th round come backs in UFC history.
Adesanya, during his press conference on Wednesday, showed full awareness of how he needed to keep the pressure in in every round, and also fully aware that this is probably his last title shot for a long time.

Here Comes the Boom (2012)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
Just say “No” to Here Comes the Boom. This Happy Madison production isn’t as egregious as most but it tries so hard to wring emotions out of its audience there’s no dirty trick it won’t try. Every inch of it stinks of artificial sweetness and a mechanical heart beats at its core. This film desperately wants to be “Rocky” and never even comes close.
Disillusioned biology teacher Scott Voss (Kevin James) learns budget cutbacks will result in the music program being canceled. Its teacher, Marty Streb (Henry Winkler) desperately needs the job to support his pregnant wife. To raise the money needed to keep the program alive, Scott begins competing in mixed martial arts matches.
Take a look at Kevin James. Even when he’s “buff” like he is in this movie, you won’t believe for a second that he would even consider fighting to make money. Scott rides a motorcycle, which makes him cool. Normal viewers might categorize him as a loser teacher who sucks at his job but the movie tells you he’s got what it takes to not only inspire his kids but take care of the old man who’s about to go broke because of the kid that’s underway. If it isn't obvious enough, this is a thinly-veiled self-insert fantasy. At night, Scott teaches classes for people who want to get their U.S. citizenship, which movie-wise, serves double duty. It's an excuse to insert some gags at the expense of people whose first language isn’t English and explain why it’s ok for him to constantly harass Bella (Salma Hayek), the sexy teacher he pines for. By the end of the movie, you know she’s going to end up in his arms, which speaks to Hayek’s acting talent that she can keep a straight face while indulging Kevin James and director Frank Coraci.
Taking cues from the Sylvester Stallone classic, with a hint of School of Rock and none of the appeal of either film, I saw right through Here Comes the Boom. Maybe you won’t. Even if the story does bend you into the shape of a pretzel like it intends to, I bet you won’t swallow the sports portion of the movie. Scott begins his "career" with matches that barely last 10 seconds, in a venue where they’re probably also betting on which rooster will die first. Before the end of the school year, he's pitted against a professional fighter. It's pure science fiction. The script goes to great lengths to tell us how he used to wrestle in college, and there is a training montage where a former fighter (Bas Rutten as Niki) teaches him the moves… but this is a comedy. The MMA scenes are more about seeing Kevin James get kneed in the head than winning. A few scenes later, we're supposed to be dramatically invested in his big match. Impossible. Here Comes the Boom could’ve gone with something realistic; maybe Joe Rogan (playing himself) has a secret passion for playing the tuba and comes to rescue the school program after hearing what Scott is doing but nah, they had to go for the ultimate “winner” of an ending. It's an insult to your intelligence.
Here Comes the Boom has few laughs to offer. Its attempt at an inspirational story will make you roll your eyes. The moments of heart are not the least bit genuine. This leaves us with Kevin James, who might have some appeal to some… but not this reviewer. (On DVD, October 12, 2019)

Missed Fists: Rhino Casipe suffers pre-fight injury—and then loses due to in-fight injury
Welcome to the latest edition of Missed Fists where we shine a light on fights from across the globe that may have been overlooked in these hectic times where it seems like there’s an MMA show every other day. This may surprise readers, but I’m not a doctor. Sure, like any good armchair analyst or hardcore fan or Joe Rogan, I can see an injury in real time and give my best guess as to what…

Anthony’s Stupid Daily Blog (388): Sun 9th Apr 2023
Still wide awake in the early hours this morning so I decided to check out UFC 287. I’ve been wanting to get into UFC for a while but haven’t been able to find a decent stream but the new wrestling one I use also carries MMA content. The front row for this event consisted of Mike Tyson, Kid Rock and Donald Trump. Fucking Hell if you put them together in front of a jigsaw puzzle they’d struggle to find the four corners let alone put the puzzle together. After his fight Jose Masvidal pointed to the trio and said “Greatest President in US history”. Apparently Kid Rock or Mike Tyson had a run as President. The main event fight between Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira was incredible. The first round was all about assessing the opponent, in the second they traded some killer shots and in the third they went all out kicking the shit out of each other. I don’t think there was even a moment where either went for a takedown presumably because both wanted the satisfaction of striking the other unconscious. The finish came when Pereira had Adesanya up against the cage and was battering him but then after one intense shit to the face he eased up assuming that he was going to go down but he didn’t and this fumble ended up costing him the fight as Isreal hit him with two perfect shots that finished him. This was a Hell of a fight and one which Joe Rogan called one of the best he’d even seen. I need to start watching more of this stuff.
I spent the rest of the early morning watching Drake and Josh on Amazon Prime. This was the last kids show I watched while I was the target demographic as I left school for college midway through its run and started watching more adult oriented content. If I had still been watching when it ended I probably would have been quite upset because this show was huge among kids back in the day. I’ll be honest a lot of the humour doesn’t hold up. The show doesn’t feature jokes so much as antics and Dan Schneider seemed to be of the opinion that having Josh Peck scream an unfunny line would automatically make it funny and so never felt the need to write that many actual funny jokes. The finale Really Big Shrimp, an hour long special of the show was actually quite good and a pretty good season finale over all. Most comedy finales make the mistake of sacrificing laughs in favour of wrapping up all the loose ends but this special managed to wrap up a few loose ends and get some good laughs in. I think the way it managed this is that it isn’t really written as a finale, it’s more written as a really big important event in the characters lives where Josh screws up a record deal for Drake and then tries to rectify the situation. There were plans to reboot the show a few years ago and the plans that Josh Peck had for the show (according to Drake Bell) are interesting. The new show would have been called “Josh and Drake” and would feature Josh as a successful real estate agent and Drake as a failed musician stuck in Mexico on a drug charge who calls in Josh to bail him out. Drake says that he was taken aback by this pitch as he felt that Josh was trying to mirror Drake’s decline in popularity. Apparently the show was to be aimed at the kids who grew up watching Drake and Josh rather thwart trying to attract a newer kid audience. If this was the case then I understand them wanting the new show to be more risqué but Mexico and drugs? Seems like a bit much, if Drake is even telling the truth that is. Either way this show isn’t going to happen now because Drake Bell ruined his career by being a big dirty perv but it would have been interesting to see what would have happened to the characters. Finally today the Lakers beat the Jazz but who the fuck cares since they were going to have to do this play in bullshit even if they got thrashed. I can’t believe that the Lakers are even in this fucking desperate situation. That loss to the Rockets earlier in the season when the Rockets were in last place was inexcusable. This was the Lakers worst moment of the season but they have had many. I can only hope Darwin feels like a fucking moron for getting rid of Russell Westbrook and pray that he shakes things up for the next season and gets rid of Anthony Davis.

Anthony Joshua And Francis Ngannou Fight Deal Nearing Completion
"Since Francis first began his negotiations in the run-up to his last UFC bout against Cyril Gane, everything he has done has been sound business."-Defense Films July 2023
youtube
I cannot help but smile in glee at every bit of Francis Ngannou news over the last 2 years or so, and not it's looking more and more likely that Ngannou will secure yet another payday, this time in a bout versus my favorite British heavyweight, Anthony Joshua.
All I see are dollars and pounds gently falling on AJ and Francis' heads like the palm of an angel.
The idea that this deal and the fight are being proposed for March of this year (literally two months away), shows the eagerness with which both fighter's camps are trying to get the deal done, and most importantly, get the money counted after the fight.
I am as excited as can be for this fight. It is a bonafide dream match. It is the kind of event that anyone in the combat sports business wants to be a part of, and the kind of once-in-a-lifetime event that pits the number 1 heavyweight in MMA against, arguably the number 1 heavyweight in boxing.
However, with that said, I can think of one guy that definitely won't be part of the business and profits of this very special, and very marketable exhibition
Tumblr media
My New Year's Resolution in 2024 is to stop picking on Dana White.
So as to spread my energy around more evenly, I have decided that 2024 MMA coverage on this blog will be dedicated to Chael Sonnen and the absolute hatchet job that he is doing in lying to the MMA community by spewing a bunch of bias, pro-UFC, pro-Dana White garbage.
I used to like the guy, but I fear that he is a massive issue for the sport and it's growing media culture as a whole.
Chael Sonnen has repeatedly found ways to cast doubt, aspertions, and sometimes outright lies regarding Francis Ngannou for the last 2 years, and unsurprisingly his coverage or takes on the Fury-Ngannou fight were a joke.
youtube
In the above video, Chael Sonnen is questioning the logic behind this Joshua-Ngannou bout taking place.
It's really silly, and Sonnen follows it up with another video questioning when Francis will finally make his PFL debut.
It'obvious what Sonnen is doing and whose side he takes with this coverage, but it's part of a much bigger problem and speak to the issues within MMA media as a whole.
MMA media is still in a relatively amateurish space. It's not like creating NFL or NBA content where there are platforms that will pay independant creators for articles, videos and such.
MMA doesn't attract the top sports journalists, there are no beat reporters like the other mainstream sports and the top journalist in the MMA space, Ariel Helwani, is largely a self-made guy, who currently operates independantly of any major sports platform.
That's why a guy like Joe Rogan, Chael Sonnen or Jess On FIre, or any other pro-UFC content creator, is creating an imbalance that allows Dana White and the UFC to control narratives and unduly influence the careers of fighters, and it's not a new thing.
He's certainly not the only one, given the ham-fisted approach to which Dana takes to granting and denying access to UFC press conferences, but it is becoming troublesome enough to where it can fuel my blog.
I'll eagerly anticipate more news and the official announcement of the fight, but I fully expect more hijinx and nonsense from the MMA media regarding this fight.

"Science Vs" Podcast: The Adderall And ADHD Controversy
Science Vs is unlike other science podcasts. Those shows produce fascinating episodes on the James Webb Telescope, why an ultraviolet can detect scorpions, and new breakthroughs in cancer research and treatment.
Since launching the show in 2016, host Wendy Zukerman has built an international audience by reporting and debunking a number of common and spectacular scientific phenomenons. In this season, Zukerman went toe-to-toe with Joe Rogan, an MMA fighter, revealing the vaccine misinformation spewed in his episode with a controversial doctor.
Season thirteen has just concluded, with recent episodes digging into some big questions and a variety of topics, from composting human bodies to the male birth control pill, to revealing interviews with Dr. Anthony Fauci, U.S. Marshal Peter Elliott, and more.
Tumblr media
In this week’s season finale episode, the show digs into Adderall with the shortage across the U.S. causing huge problems for people with ADHD. But on the flip side, we hear people saying that we shouldn’t be giving this drug out anyway. The episode examines: what exactly is Adderall? what is it doing in people’s brains? is there any truth to this idea that Adderall is like meth — could it be dangerous? We also hear from psychiatrist Prof. Rachel Fargason, neuroscientist Prof. Habibeh Khoshbouei, and actor Kai Liu.
● Some key takeaways from the episode include:
○ People with ADHD are more likely to get into car accidents, to go to prison, to be suicidal, and are even more likely to die earlier than someone who doesn’t have ADHD. But drugs like Adderall can help change this. It can help their brain pick a channel, and stay there.
○ Worldwide, it’s estimated that 3% of adults have ADHD. Overall, studies find that Adderall can make a big difference for people with ADHD. One trial of about 400 adults with ADHD found that 65% of them got better on Adderall, compared to 20% on placebo.
○ Adderall and meth are similar, but what really matters is how they get into your system. People with ADHD following a doctor’s orders are probably swallowing a pill. It has to get broken down, travels through the digestive tract and circulates throughout the bloodstream before it finally starts to get absorbed into the brain. All this means it can take more than an hour for it to start hitting the brain. Compare that to smoking, injecting, or snorting a drug like meth. It gets to the brain much faster, which can make it a bigger risk for addiction.
○ While Adderall is generally helpful for people with ADHD, there are risks to taking stimulants. In kids, taking stimulants can slightly stunt their growth if they take them a long time (by 1–2 cm on average). And in general, it’s pretty typical for someone’s heart rate and pulse to increase a little bit while on stimulants, so doctors often won’t give them to people with certain heart conditions. Experts do agree however, that for people with ADHD who can take Adderall, the positives outweigh the negatives.
Please find below some of the highlights from this season:
● Fauci on Monkeypox: What Went Wrong
○ Description: We called up Dr. Anthony Fauci to talk about monkeypox. We wanted to know — what’s the deal with the slow response here? And why haven’t we gotten this virus under control?
● Should We Compost Human Bodies?
○ Description: What’s the greenest way to die? Some nerds are saying that our bodies should go the way of our veggie scraps — and become compost. But will people get on board with spreading Grandpa in the garden? To find out, we talk to Brie Smith, Micah Truman, Katrina Spade and Thomas Bass.
● The Mystery of the Man Who Died Twice
○ Description: A dead body turns up with a stolen identity. We tell the story of how a grandmother tracked down the truth — and helped create a whole new and controversial world of crime fighting. To tell this story, we talk to U.S. Marshal Peter Elliott, Dr. Margaret Press, and Phil Nichols.
● The Male Pill: When Is It Coming?
○ Description: A male birth control pill has been this big tease for decades. And today, with the overturning of Roe v. Wade … a male pill might matter more than ever. So we’re grabbing science by the balls to find out — where is it? Will it ever get to the shelves? We talk to physicians Prof. John Amory and Dr. Brian Nguyen.
● When Science and Superstitions Collide
○ Description: This is the THIRTEENTH season of the show! So we’re diving into stories about superstitions and luck. We’ll share the eerie tale of a 13-legged sea creature. We’ll talk about a hot new telescope that’s trying to look back 13 billion years ago to uncover the secrets of the universe. And we’ll talk about a squeaky superstition that involves a rat — as the tooth fairy. We speak to marine biologist Dr. Julian Evans, astrophysicist Dr. Jeyhan Kartaltepe, and biologist Dr. Philip Cox.

○ Description: There’s an Adderall shortage across the U.S., and it’s causing huge problems for people with ADHD.
