The Indie Animation Boom Continues in 2022 [part 3]

Notes
[1] Of note are animated series in development like Re: Quest, The Alyssian, Don’t Touch the Props, Bloop and Friends, Gadzooks and the Cryptoid Kids, Project: Tideaway, Please Stay Tuned, Finding Alyx, Bleating Heart, Marabelli: A Scoundrel’s Tale!, Accidental Gehenna!, Hockey, Love, and Guts, The Crystal Eden, Dragon Falls, The Incredible Adventures of Detective Cat, Blackwater Creek, Defender Squad, Framed, Violet, Revamped, Destination Unknown (to be re-imagined), Broken Hearts Club, Alfred the Alien, Zeyka, The Cosmos in Your Eyes, Captain Zero, The Fantastic Warriors (tentative title), Sorein (working title), Royal Pain, Atomic Horseman, Swift Spark and the Defense Five, Space Landers, Crescent Fire, Dark Pages, Crash in the System, The Crystal Eden, and Aleph Stars.
Additionally, Final Frontier, a sci-fi/dark satire webtoon may be turned into animation if there is enough support. While I would include Fruition of the Damned, the creator of that series, JrRMack, strongly supports NFTs, a morally corrupt cryptocurrency scheme which is harmful to the environment and the livelihood of artists. So, I cannot, in good conscience, support him or his series. The same applies to Roads to Rome, which is also funded by an NFT. Compare this to Whitman, who has said publicly that “NFTs are garbage as is, and you wont find my work involved in them,” as did the official account of Wild Card and the account of Faeduck Studios, which is producing Howdy Cloudboy.
[2] Century Park is said to include Indigenous characters. Christopher Wade noted his film, in development, The Will of Monsters. Jenn noted their indie animation studio, Sunflower Club, and their animatic pilot for The Figments. It is not known the progress of Dark Harvest, with the official account saying that the episode is 45% done, and the show’s creator calls himself an “expert procrastinator.”
The same can be said about Aisle99 which has an inactive YouTube channel, but semi-active Twitter, or CriTORA. The social media accounts for animated series like Harri’s World, Dirt: The Series, Romancing Roslyn Cherry, Phantom Hollow, Deranged, Zoolaplex, Cabiria Intermezzo, Here We Are, and Demonic Crepes (created by Bubblegum Cartoons, and has a pilot in 2019) are inactive.
While there is a listing of those working on the show Mayhem by Magpie V. Raven’s website, she is stepping back to pursue her own projects, like the Kina’s Adventure series while Sir Mayhem / Paul may continue the series after the animated film Mayhem Zombie Oblivion premieres. Raven is also an artist for Lackadaisy, Mystery Skulls, Ollie & Scoops, and more.
The pilot episode of Stars Align has been written, and it will “premiere when completed on YouTube,” with characters redrawn, people cast for roles, in a series with The Owl House and Infinity Train vibes. It is possible that Sara Eissa’s Astur’s Rebellion might be pitched somewhere again, as that animation is now under a company named Toon Cave, according to the updated website.
[4] The author of the webcomic based on the series, Jocelyn Samara DiDomenick, said that there was a number of reasons for the series ending, but said that “the very short answer…is that things just kinda weren’t working out” and called it “a bummer,” but is trying to look at the positive here.
[5] Cirque Du Monstro (CDM) is an additional series which fell apart, but for different reasons than Rain. The CDM Twitter account was deleted. The YouTube channel is empty. The creator, Krisis, seems to have scammed those who wanted to work with them, and sexually assaulted (and harassed) people, according to animators and storyboarders. For information on the latter, see Céline Heijnen’s thread beginning here, Bakakoujin’s tweet (and tweet thread), Antonia Pinnola’s Facebook post, and other tweets. Even a month before the tweets in December 2021, various animators promoted the show. According to a private tweet of Krisis‘s account, M0nsterParent, on December 8, 2021, the “CDM crew has been officially disbanded” and the animation is no longer being made. This is unfortunate because I felt that the project had some promise. Animators like Shou Tuzi (creating Tallyho!) stepped away from any affiliation with the show or the company producing it, 3M Productions, as did voice actor Mark Allen Jr.

Rain LGBT
Oh boy, I finally get to talk about one of my favorite webcomics! Last week, I described a common motif in webcomics featuring transgender protagonists. I think the parallels between Assigned Male and Manic Pixie Nightmare Girls were a bit discouraging. The two webcomics lacked a plot, featured two-dimensional characters, and didn’t focus on humor either. Jocelyn Samara DiDomenick’s 2010 webcomic Rain is quite different in that regard.
Tumblr media
Rain (or Rain LGBT, as it is featured on SmackJeeves) tells the story of Rain and her group of LGBT friends. It’s highly character-driven, with affection and elation being alternated with hatred and misjudgments. Rain and her friends are 17-year old high school students in an at least somewhat religious area. Her parents don’t allow the aptly-named Maria to wear revealing clothing, the school disapproves of “gaiety” presented by her brother Rudy, and protagonist Rain risks everything if the wrong people find out she is trans.
However, what should be kept in mind is how young these characters are. Though they understand themselves well, the characters are still exploring themselves and expanding their own beliefs. The characters make mistakes ranging from slip-of-the-mouths to reckless choices. Gender-fluid character Kylie finds herself slowly comes to figure himself out and construct a personal identity. Much of the power of Rain is in watching these characters grow up.
There are also outside “threats”, however. Early examples are presented in Rain having to come out to her childhood friend Gavin, who doesn’t quite comprehend the concept at first. One of the interesting aspects about this is watching the audience move from hating Gavin’s guts to coming to love the character. More complex discord is displayed when Rain has to deal with her family, or when Rain’s loving aunt tries to date. Rain has a large cast of characters, by the way, and all have personal relations with one another that range from unconditional love to aggressive resentment.
Interestingly, DiDomenick likes to play around with some (blatant) symbolism, constructing an entire story-within-a-story (inspired by Breath of Fire?) intended to reflect the characters and their dispositions. None of it is abstract, though you are allowed to read as much into the canon as you like. Understanding the characters is key in understanding the appeal of Rain.
Tumblr media
This wouldn’t be a proper review if I didn’t mention the artwork, and that featured in Rain is of pretty low quality. You don’t read the webcomic for its visuals. DiDomenick drew the first two volumes of Rain with this fuzzy brush that I personally really dislike, though the outlines get smoothed out later-on. She depicts backgrounds as blank voids of solid color, and in the world of Rain, cars randomly become invisible unless it’s an establishing shot. But it works. Because of the flat colors and simple linework, every page is highly readable and it is easy to follow. The artstyle is incredibly consistent as well, with a bit of steady improvement. I don’t believe the simplistic art ruins the story, and the power of webcomics is that the medium allows comics that would never have had a chance in traditional publication to see light-of-day in print.
I hope that, through this (admittedly awfully one-sided) review, I’ve been able to explain why I put Rain on such high esteem. The reason I love Rain is because its story and characters allow you to look at the world through lenses provided by the fiction. Not everything presented in Rain may be entirely realistic, but it doesn’t have to be. If anything, unlike webcomics such as Assigned Male and Nightmare Girls, Rain actually shows that acceptance and love are the most powerful things you can give to a person, and I suppose I’ve always had a weak spot for that kind of stuff.
…(So much for “updates on Sundays”, grumble grumble)

Yes, that's Jocelyn Samara DiDomenick! *The* Author of Rain! Can vouch, I'm the official voice of Rain~
Attempting to Tumbl
In response to recent Twitter nonsense, I've decided to try Tumblr again. Still kinda figuring this all out, so please be patient with me for now, I'll try to post here as I would anywhere else. If you don't know me, I'm the author of two queer/trans positive webcomics. Rain is a slice-of-life about a trans girl and her friends. It ran for 11 years, and is now done. (Although there is technically new content in the form of Dragon Rain!) My current one, My Impossible Soulmate, is a romantic isekai about an otaku girl who can't confess to her childhood friend because she's stuck in another world. I'll post here whenever there's new pages of either. I also do little doodles of myself as a rat. Mostly funny or venting stuff. All kinds of good stuff. ^_^ Please look forward to it!

It’s time for a crossover between Rain and Widdershins!
After this page:
Tumblr media
I think it’s pretty clear we need a crossover between Kate Ashwin’s Widdershins and Jocelyn Samara DiDomenick's Rain so that we can have even more rain puns!

If you are up for watching transfems crawl through the fucking mud if they're treated with respect by the story, my favorites of those are: DIE, Gillen and Hans The Wicked + The Divine, Gillen and McKelvie (Huh. Somebody's on this list twice...) The Nemesis Trilogy, April Daniels Venus Envy, Crystal Frasier Rain, Jocelyn Samara DiDomenick Welcome Back, Alice, Shuzo Oshimi Your Love is the Future, Bingo Morihashi
Some things half-way between mud and makeover:
Dimension 20: Fantasy High: The Seven, still.  Pumpkin Time, Gaedarae I’m still reading senpai wa otokonoko by Pom: I’m not done so they might have her pull back to bi femboy, but it really seems like the manga’s gonna let her be some kind of girl-thing There are many other stories that I entirely or most commonly read with a trans lens (dare I say a plurality or majority), but those are metaphors, and allegories, and ambiguities, and excuses, and I'm not trying to start discourse, and all of them, bar just one (you know which one), are not officially For Me. For these reasons and others they are not here.
This is an open journal entry. Just thinking my thoughts, and sharing in case someone benefits. I’m not, like, disavowing anyone or anything, not a callout post, or anything like that. It’s not at that level to me. I don’t hate any of those people, i continue to have a parasocial love for a number of them. I still have a subscription, and there’s shows I’ll probably keep watching. for now.
But gosh how fast the magic of dropout is fading for me. I always had critiques, but a few months ago, I still breathed dropout. D20 was my favorite show, period. Going back to previous seasons was an easy comfort. Now, it’s like, whatever, idk. Some of those stories are still close to my heart, but it’s not a cozy ride for me anymore.
There is a certain level of acceptance trans girls do for everything, where the world isn’t built for us, and we accept it. Almost all media isn’t for us, and we kind of turn off parts of ourselves to watch it comfortably. If we didn’t, we’d have, like, five books and ten web comics to read and no television.
It wasn’t until a bunch of girls on here turned themselves back on and complained that I had to look at how much empty air was in this pillow. How part of the reason I am so eager to see Evan Kelmp as a trans woman is because there are no trans women with lines in misfits and magic. Nor in most of the seasons. There’s been one (I think 3-4 of the questing queens are non-binary, but I don’t see anything anywhere that any of them call themselves women) at the table in d20 history.
And that wasn’t a huge problem! After all, we’re just one kind of person. One kind of person that’s like in the top 3 targets for fascists, but just one of the three (barring intersections of course…) Until we got a mis mag season 2, the show that is ostensibly a fuck you to terfism and a revision of some painful stuff for girls like me, and there’s even less tgirl content than last time (unless—no, stop it. Not now). And I was like “yeah, this is getting…uncomfortable.” And I know, they plan these things out in advance, pre-taped, but on the tails of this discourse, this discourse of “why are there more drag queens than trans girls on dropout?” we go…back to dungeons and dragons queens for a season 2. Like the best case scenario is they’re not listening. I hope they’re not listening. This isn’t some sort of response, I fucking hope it isn’t anyway.
And some people have come out of the woodwork to say weeeeird shit in the wake of trans women complaining about this. Misunderstanding people on purpose sometimes, in other cases just going full mask off to say trans women “just aren’t marketable,” like that’s not literally what the complaint is about, or that they just don’t exist in LA…or that there are only so few of us period.
Dropout is just some 2nd/3rd tier streaming service. They’ve always been pretty white, and pretty cis. They’re only so big, they can’t do everything, and they can’t do everything they do right. I know that. But they do talk a big game about doing it for all of us who no one else will do it for.
Except, not for me. Not for girls like us. Not really. I’m still watching, but I see that now. It’s just another thing that’s not really for us.
We’ve got some great stories about how fucking hard our lives are, but I have to…live one, so I’m still looking for stories where people coercively asssigned male get to play, experiment, laugh, feel safe, and end up or stay in transfemininity. No awful coming out, no isekai gender bender excuses, no undead/time travel psych torture, no Ranma Saotome gender Hokey Pokey. Stories about the joy of becoming or being yourself, and the magic of that, because it is magical, something that acknowledges that it’s hard, but isn’t about how it’s hard. Nice stuff for us.
My recs for that:
Yellow Brick Ramble, Daisy Finch McGuire (she has it rough at home but she leaves asap)
the one piece wano arc (good luck getting there), Eiichiro Oda
is it strange to feel dysphoric coming back from an isekai?, Squipkechi
I quit being a man, I got cancer so I decided to dress up as a woman and fall in love, Half-Me
She is convinced her half-brother is a girl, Mizukami Ice
And for the fembies, I cross-dressed for the irl meetup, Kurano I Want to Be a Cute Anime Girl, Azul Crescent
