Taylor Swift: There is no happy ever after
BARRY EGAN MEETS TAYLOR SWIFT Sunday Independent (Ireland) -26 Oct 2014

“I think that the only way that I know how to process difficult and complex emotions that I can’t figure out how to navigate through in my own mind is to write a song about them and then they become simplified to me. It’s almost like ‘You and I are going to be best friends. We are just going to hang out! We are just going to go to Ireland and hang out in a pub’ I then know how to process them, when I write a verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/ chorus/out”, she explains.
To interview her is to pay a state visit. You know you’re dealing with a star of astronomical proportions when the record company sends a car to pick you up at the airport. And there is someone from her management team to bring you to a waiting room on the 10th floor of a grand hotel with a courtyard filled with flashy cars straight out of a James Bond movie.
What follows is almost ritualistic. You sign a confidentiality agreement form. Then, after a while, someone comes to take you to a suite where you are given an iPod. Then another person hands you earphones and presses play so that, amid much secrecy, you get to hear three songs from the star’s new album, called 1989, after the year of her birth.
Once that is finished you are brought to another, much bigger, much grander suite, where the star awaits your questions on those three songs and anything else that you might care to ask her. The correspondent from a Japanese magazine is leaving just as I am going in. “She is very talkative,” he says, as an English journalist sits down to his turn after me at the iPod. It is quite an operation.
“‘Star’ used to be reserved for a small number of people,” playwright Tom Stoppard once said, “and when the star category became so vast, they came up with ‘superstar,’ and then they came up with ‘megastar.’”
Taylor Swift — for it is she — is a megastar with bells on. Last year, the cover of New York magazine spelled out her contribution to popular culture’s zeitgeist: “Not Katy. Not Miley. Not Gaga. Why Taylor Swift is the Biggest Pop Star in the World.”
In person, Taylor Swift looks like a 1930s flapper siren, reimagined for a new age of pop ultra-stardom with a touch of the girl-next-door thrown in. She is extremely polite and almost impossibly normal and, above all, fun. Her girl-next-door, down-to-earth demeanour belies the vast scale of her jaw-dropping success.
The Guardian described Ms Swift’s supersonic rise from “ringletted country artist, teenage sweetheart of the American heartland, to feminist role model and the world’s most charming pop star” to become “the kind of culturally titanic figure adored as much by gnarly rock critics as teenage girls, feminist intellectuals and, well, pretty much all of emotionally sentient humankind.”
Pretty much all of emotionally sentient humankind appears to have bought at least one of Taylor Swift’s albums. She’s sold over 30m copies of them. And when you factor in world tours that sell out in the blink of an eye, and endorsements and what-have-you, it is not particularly difficult to see why Forbes magazine estimated that the 24-year-old woman sitting in front of me made something in the region of $64m last year.
“It’s not the hardest job to have in the world,” she says with disarming charm of this day of international media interviews, as I take a seat opposite her. “I try to remind myself of that. I’m sitting in a chair, talking about music. It’s not that big of a deal.”
Taylor Swift, however, is very much a big deal. Her every utterance and action is world news or at least trending on Twitter. Her lyrics are dissected by culture vultures as though they are the Dead Sea Scrolls of post-teen angst. Her 2010 song Dear John had the famous lines, “Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with?/The girl in the dress cried the whole way home/ I should’ve known”. It is about singer John Mayer, who was 32 when he and Taylor broke up in February, 2010.
The ballad All Too Well included the even more famous line: “You call me up again just to break me like a promise/ So casually cruel in the name of being honest”. The song’s reputed target is the actor Jake Gyllenhaal, whom she dated in mid 2010, and broke up with a year later. Scurrilous reports even had it that Jake took then 20-year-old Taylor’s virginity and then dropped her, abominably, on her 21st birthday.
Then there was the 2012 song, I Knew You Were Trouble, about One Direction’s Harry Styles, whom she was dating for a time in 2012.
Most memorably, perhaps, was when singer Joe Jonas broke it off with Taylor in 2008, and then began dating actress Camilla Belle: the song Taylor wrote, Better Than Revenge was nigh venomous: “She’s an actress/She’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress”.
Swift’s lyrics are not so much autobiographical as heart-rending, and sometimes pure vicious lines ripped from her private diary — or what critic Robert Christgau described as her “diaristic realism.” Her new album does not disappoint in the heart-on-bloody-sleeve department either. I ask Taylor what goes through her mind when she wrote lyrics such as, “You look like my next mistake”. This is one of the three songs I got to hear from the new album seconds before our interview. “Actually, that song was a joke,” she smiles. “I wrote that as a joke. And I think people think I’m serious when they listen to it.”
I nod to the effect that I thought, too, she was serious.
“But the idea of that song is that I was sitting around, thinking about the media’s fictionalised, cartoon version of me,” she says, “where I’m like this jet-setting serial dater/man eater. I was thinking about that perception. And I was thinking about how interesting it might be to write from that perspective, if I was that way.
“Like, if I was that girl, exactly as they write about me, what would be my mission statement? What would be my life story, my life’s motto. So I just wrote that song,” says the singer, who was born on December 13, 1989, raised in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, and released her self-titled debut album when she was a mere 16 years old.
What emotions come up for the public when they hear the words Taylor Swift? I ask her. How do you think the world sees that person?
“That is such an interesting question, because I think about that all the time,” she says, adding that being her is sometimes akin to an out-of-body experience.
“I think we all wonder what the perception is of us to strangers,” she explains. “But I think there is no real right answer to that, because everyone has their own opinion based on how much of you they’ve been exposed to. Like, if someone has listened to all my albums then they’d have a different opinion of me than someone who has only heard one song.”
And if you could have an out-of-body experience and listen and watch yourself, what would you think of Taylor Swift?
“Ohhh. I don’t know! I think I would be,” she says sweetly, pausing, “I think I would like my lyrics.”
I say that for such a big star, the lyrics on the new album are almost novelistic — “I’ll end up in flames or I’ll end up in paradise”; “Boys only want love if it is torture.”
Asked what kind of books she reads, Taylor says, “Oh my gosh, I like to read historical things. I like to read biographies. I really like things that actually happen. I just read this book by Peter Evans called
The Secret Conversations, the Ava Gardner biography. It is not necessarily biography; it is a book he wrote about the process of interviewing her for her biography that she then decided she didn’t want to do. Did you read the book?” she asks.
Frank Sinatra threatened to kill himself if she didn’t come back to him, I reply. “You totally read the excerpts in Vanity Fair,” she gushes. Would your relationships be as, er, ... feisty as Ava’s? I ask.
“No — she and I are very different. We have very different personalities. But I love Ava Gardner,” she says of the American legend who had a tumultuous marriage to Sinatra from 1951 to 1957.
She seemed to revel in driving Frank literally mad, I suggest.
“Uh-huh,” Taylor Swift says, looking at me, wondering where this is going.
And you have the potential with your music and your lyrics to drive exes mad. She laughs.
I felt like I had looked in your diary with some of these very raw lyrics, I say to her as the bottled water sits unsipped to her left.
“I feel like my diary has been public since I’ve been 16,” Taylor replies, “because that is true. And I mean, it is very interesting living your life that way because as things have progressed and as you get more known and more, I guess, recognised and all that, there are higher stakes to being vulnerable. Like, opening up your diary to the world; you know you are going to have some people go, ‘Hey, yeah, I relate to that. I felt that too’, and then some people are going to be, like, ‘She’s so annoying,’ You know?” she says.
“You have people who have really, really, incredibly, intensely positive feelings about you,” she laughs, “and then you have people who are giving you intense senseless criticism. I can always handle constructive criticism.”
Aren’t you worse for listening to the intense senseless criticism? I wonder.
“I do try to limit the amount of senseless criticism that I listen to, but I do read journalists’ take on my music, because I think that helps me grow. And, honestly, if someone whose job it is to study music has an opinion, then I think that’s valid. There have been times when I have read a review and thought, ‘ You know what, I could work on that for the next record.’”
But you’re the one who sells millions upon millions of records. You can do it; they can’t. They are the eunuchs in the harem.
“Yeah,” she laughs. “But it’s a fine line, because I love to watch other people’s careers. I love to study other people’s career arcs and things like that. And one thing that I do notice a lot is a lot of celebrities cannot handle constructive criticism. So they only listen to the positive feedback and then they exist only in this world where they surround themselves with sycophantic people who tell them everything they want to hear all the time. And that’s the opposite end of that pendulum swing.”
And then you’d be on medication, I say, by being in that world.
“I have a really high priority on staying sane. It’s a huge deal,” she says. How do you stay sane? “Well — I over-think a lot about everything”
You’re 24. If you didn’t over-think you wouldn’t be sane.
“Yeah! Exactly! And especially as a songwriter you have to stay open. You have to stay open to feeling things — like rejection and, you know, loss and disappointment; and reminiscing about things. It is just the same as you have to still feel joy and enthusiasm and excitement. As a songwriter, I can’t put up barricades and emotional barriers to protect myself.” Were you always so honest? You wrote
Revenge when you were 18. To be that young and write the lyrics, “She’s an actress/She’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress . . .” “I just always wanted to be able to say what I actually felt, and put it into a song and put it out into the world,” Taylor answers. “What is interesting is that it is about my life when I write it and then I put it out into the world and it is about someone else’s life when they’re listening to it.”
You said something fascinating in an interview about that song Revenge: “I used to think people could steal your boyfriend . . .”
Taylor finishes the quote, “But no one can steal your boyfriend from you if he doesn’t want to leave.”
“Exactly,” she says, suddenly all girl power. “An interesting part about having grown up with all of my inner thoughts and lessons and doubts and fears and anger issues being put into these songs and these lyrics is, sometimes, you change your mind. Like, sometimes you handle things differently.”
“Like, two albums ago I had a song that I put out called Mean that was about this critic who would not get off of my back and wanted to end my career with his reviews alone. I felt very victimised by it. So I
wrote this song that was, ‘ Why have you got to be so mean?’ It came from a place of such hurt. Then fast-forward and the way that I now handle criticism is reflected in
Shake It Off,” she says referring to her new single, which is old-school pop in the mould of Gwen Stefani’s Hollaback Girl, with Taylor, tongue-in-cheekily telling the haters to jump in the Hudson River:
“I stay up too late, got nothing in my brain/That’s what people say mmm, that’s what people say/I go on too many dates, but I can’t make ‘em stay/At least that’s what people say mmm, that’s what people say/. . . And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate.”
“Shake It Off is a much different way of dealing with it,” she explains. “Which is kind of like, ‘OK, you don’t like me for being myself? I’m just going to be myself more!’” And who are you? “Me? Wow! You are really . . . ” I’m Irish. We’re obsessed with death and sex and God.
“I am too! So this is like talking to myself. I think what’s interesting — and I have been thinking about this a lot — is the idea of celebrity and fame and all those strange concepts is that it affects people differently in every situation. I see a lot of people where it overtakes them and it becomes them. Then I think I’ve seen other people — I hope I’m in this group — where they remain in somewhat of a normal mind-frame and have sort of a self-awareness about the fact that their life is being . . . that there are all these completely weird and abnormal circumstances swirling around their life. And they are just trying to stay in a normal mind-space about all of it. So, I think, that’s the group I’m in.”
Isn’t it a slight dichotomy? In the sense that you have written a lot of songs about failed relationships and break-ups. If you meet Mr Right and the relationship is fantastic, will your creativity crumble? Does that worry you?
“Yeah! I think about that all the time,” she says.
Why don’t you just lie about your relationships then? You could be in a happy relationship and pretend not to be.
“I wish!” she exclaims. “God, if I didn’t have 40 paparazzi outside my door every day, then that would be a lot easier, but I do think about that a lot, because songwriting is the only reason I do this. Like, if I didn’t write my own songs I wouldn’t be a singer; I wouldn’t be on stage.”
Are you saying you have to be miserable in order to write songs?
“No. I am saying I have to write songs in order to be onstage. So if my inspiration ever dried up,” Taylor says. “It’s kind of like, you wonder if that can really happen. I think after a certain period of time, you have learned a skill; you know how to be open to inspiration at all times; you know how to catch ideas when they kind of land in front of you.”
As Taylor tries to suture her wounds, some of her critics are sharpening their long, bloody knives. They don’t know what to make of Taylor’s brand of l’amour. “Retrograde, a prude infatuated with white-knight romance,” went one criticism in the Noughties.
Dodai Stewart, in a post on the website Jezebel entitled, ‘Taylor Swift is a Feminist’s Nightmare,’ wrote: “For Taylor, 15 means falling for a boy and dreaming of marrying him. My 15 was more like: Flirt with this one, make out with that one, try a cigarette, get drunk, lie to your parents, read some Anais Nin; [Swift’s] image of being good and pure plays right into how much the patriarchy fetishises virginity, loves purity, and celebrates women who know their place as delicate flowers.”
Maybe a more important point that these critics are missing is that if Anais Nin was around today she’d probably be writing lyrics like those in Revenge or
All Too Well and putting them to music so we could tune in to MTV to hear about her tortured love life.
The question of Taylor’s tortured love life has become almost an international obsession. Last month, she was asked by Rolling Stone if she had ever been in love. The answer from the girl who has been romantically entwined to various degrees with Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner, John Mayer, Jake Gyllenhaal, Harry Styles and Conor Kennedy, was typically Taylor in its Jane Austen melodrama: “Not real love. Not the kind that lasts.” Boo hoo.
I ask Taylor if she will ever run out of break-ups to write about.
“I would probably run out of break-ups to write about if I stopped having breakups,” she laughs, “because my music is very autobiographical. But, on this new album, one theme that you will see that has kind of faded is the idea of the guy, the boy, has faded into the background. It is not as much about writing about a boy or a guy or losing a guy. It is more reflective on relationships and the lessons I’ve learned and taken away from those relationships.” What lessons are those? “There are a lot of them,” answers the young woman who once called one of her songs We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. “You heard a song called Out Of The Woods [on the new album] which is kind of about me realising that there is no happily ever after. It is a constant struggle. Every day is, ‘ Are we going to make it till tomorrow?’ What kind of guys are you drawn to? “Right now?” she asks “I haven’t been looking. I haven’t dated in a really long time.”
But, generally, some people when they are in a bad space will be drawn to partners who accentuate or reinforce their low self-esteem. Or if they are in a good space, they will be drawn to someone who brings them up.
“I don’t know,” she says, “I have always had that — you dream about the ideal situation, if you ever were to meet someone and it were to be right. I think if it were to be right, it would be someone who is very sunny and bright. I think that would be the ideal match. But then again, I have no idea. I don’t know. I don’t know anything! I haven’t been dating in a really long time. I haven’t been looking for a very long time. I’ve just been focusing on music and my friends. I think it is really important for twentysomethings to take some time to themselves and figure out who they are on their own terms.”
I say to Taylor that if all her lyrics — with the exception of this new album — are autobiographical, then she seems to be meeting the wrong guys on a regular basis?
“I think, I have thought about this a lot, I may have been mistaking my idea of always challenging myself in my career for always looking for someone who is a constant challenge in my personal life. If I was to put some sort of psychological spin on it, it would be that,” she says. “I had ambition in my career and, you know, you’re looking for someone who always seems like an obstacle, a challenge, and that is not necessarily what will end up making you happy.” Why not just fall in love, Taylor? “You’re full of these questions that have no answers! Would you be able to answer that question?”
Give me a glass of whiskey and I’ll have a go, I say. She laughs.
Did you really call Ed Sheeran a substitute boyfriend? “No! Who said that?” She roars with laughter again. “I never called him that. I called him my best friend. He is one of my best friends. But it has never occurred to either of us to date. We would never do it.” I ask her about All Too Well. “That was a song I wrote that was very brutally honest and kind of,” she pauses, “kind of hard to release because putting that out into the world is kind of exposing people to the fact that you’ve got your heart sort of ripped out when you were 19, 20. But telling the story of it from beginning to end was kind of like a way of saying goodbye to it for me.” And healing yourself as well. “Oh yeah! Ab-so-lutely.” I say that I used to love Jake Gyllenhaal’s movies but when I listen to the words of
All Too Well (all together now: “You call me up again just to break me like a promise”) I will never, ever, ever, watch Donnie Darko — the 2001 supernatural classic starring Mr Gyllenhaal, his sister Maggie and Drew Barrymore — again.
Although she has never publicly admitted that Mr Gyllenhaal was the subject of the song — until now, effectively, to LIFE — Taylor cracks up laughing for the trillionth time in the evening.
“Oh my god! You and I are going to be best friends. We are just going to hang out! We are just going to go to Ireland and hang out in a pub.” I’m 47. You’re 24. I’m married. “Bring the family We’ll talk about life.” Taylor Swift’s new album ‘1989’ is out tomorrow on Big Machine Records

(( Felt like re-writing down my Alastor's timeline, mostly for myself, but also so others have a better understanding of what it's been like. ))
April 10th, 1898: Alastor is born to Travis and Desdemona Reed-Guillory on the outskirts of Cut Off, Louisiana. September 22nd, 1902: Alastor's sister, Josephine, is born. April 4th, 1908: Josephine passes away after accidentally drowning in the swamp. May 29th, 1908: Alastor finally snaps and commits his first murder: Travis, his own father. This culminated after years of physical, emotional, and mental abuse. Unfortunately, his method of murder (shotgun) also led to him accidentally killing his own mother, as well. Both enraged and heartbroken, he ran from the family cabin. June 1st, 1908: Alastor manages to run/walk all the way to New Orleans before he collapses. Soon after, he's found by a man named Larry Landers, who decides to take him in and raise him as his own son. April 11th, 1916: Alastor has just turned 18, and is thus eligible to be drafted into World War 1. He joins the Navy as a radio operator. This is where he's first introduced to the world of radio. November 11th, 1918: World War 1 ends, and Alastor returns home. He gets himself a job as a waiter at a diner, but this is just a way for him to earn money; his true passion was radio. July 23rd, 1923: WCBE-AM, a station dedicated to local coverage of big events (such as Mardi Gras celebrations), signs on for the first time. With his previous experience in the Navy, along with his charisma and charm, Alastor manages to secure himself a spot as a broadcaster. May 28th, 1927: Alastor commits his first murder since killing his father: a man that had been positively convicted of pushing his wife down a lightwell, only to be given life with the possibility of parole and set loose a few years later on good behavior. This sense of injustice enraged him, which led to him tracking the man down and ending him personally. After that, he made it a point to keep track of other criminals who had been set loose that he deemed unworthy of their freedom so he could kill them as well. September 16th, 1928: The station is bought by Mr. Joseph Uhalt and begins broadcasting from the Desoto Hotel in 1928, which is why the station's name is changed to WDSU (with D and S standing for Desoto and U standing for Uhalt). By this time, Alastor has risen through the ranks as one of the station's major personalities, letting him quit his job at the diner so he can focus on being a full-time broadcaster. July 16th, 1929: One month before he was meant to be married to his fiancée of nearly one year, Alastor's would-be bride broke off the engagement, claiming she'd "gotten bored" and "found someone new". That evening, he went to her home and killed both her and her new lover. This is the one and only time he's ever killed a woman. November 6th, 1933: While disposing of another body in the bayou outside New Orleans, Alastor was attacked by hunting dogs and then consequently shot, ending his life at the age of 35.

Happy Friday!! How about "Someone just having the worst luck." from the Short Story prompts? Have fun!
Here’s some Zevran from that modern!Thedas corporate espionage AU that… still needs a name. Anyways here it is @dadrunkwriting
Like a cliche, it started to rain the moment he stepped off the boat.
The journey from Antiva City was calm. He took an overnight train from Antiva City to Ostwick going through Ansburg then picked up a cheap ferry ticket to cross the Waking Sea to Amaranthine. But the moment he arrived on Ferelden's gray and dismal shores the previously mild weather took a turn and the skies opened up in a sudden downpour of rain. Zevran made his way to the train and then to the hotel where he was going to stay for the next week. He read through his slim file on his upcoming assignment while he drank the overpriced watery coffee in the hotel cafe.
It was such a simple job that he ought to have been insulted. Stealing a graduate student's alchemical research notes was the sort of basic work given to a newcomer in the business. After the last job Zevran supposed he ought to be treated as a newbie. It was a disaster, and he was lucky that Taliesin managed to save his ass. Save the job. Keep them alive. So Zevran took a break. Was encouraged to take a break. Until now. But as he was a year out of the field, he supposed the bosses were concerned that he might need some easing back into this line of work. So no, Zevran wasn't insulted.
He was simply... tired. Zevran turned his attention back to the file on his phone.
Bran Surana. 23 years old. Born on the 10th of Kingsway in Denerim. Studied at Kinloch Hold College for his undergraduate and graduate programs before being picked up as a doctoral candidate at Amaranthine University. Currently working part-time at a bookshop while working on his doctorate. His research was... something to do with alchemy as an energy source. Vague, Zevran thought as he scowled at the note on his phone. He'd have to dig into that.
Regular haunts in Amaranthine: Places of work and residence.
Family: Paternal grandmother.
Friends: Uncertain.
Hobbies: Unknown.
He was given practically nothing, Zevran realized as he ran through the file once, twice, three more times. This was standard for new Crows: do your own footwork, do your own research on your target, figure it out yourself. It was swim or drown, and Zevran... he sighed and stared out the window, following the slow trek of a raindrop sliding down the windowpane. Terrible luck with the rain. He would have to wait for the weather to clear up before he started to work.
His gaze returned to his phone, to the file, to the grainy picture of Bran Surana: dark hair, dark eyes, pale ears poking out from behind the curtain of black hair... he wasn't particularly noticeable, was he? Zevran took another sip of coffee.
This would be an easy job. His luck would turn around.
It had to.

Going for the next adventure!
Hi all, after a year of Tumblr absence (my last post was from March 2022 when my Nature Interpretation course finished), I've decided to have another go at blogging, partially because multiple friends have suggested to do so but mostly because I realized during my course that I really liked it. I was horrible as a child at keeping a diary, so we'll see how it goes but am going to try to write once a week.
So why now?? Because I've finally made the first big step towards my next adventure; I resigned from my job and gave notice to my landlord last week, so by 1st June I'll be home- and job-less... I can't wait! 😜
After a lot of time figuring things out & making a plan during 2022 (more about that some other time), I'm really excited to start a new life and career in southern Chile, hoping to fulfil my dream of working in conservation management at a private park. Have no clue where exactly I'll be living or which job I'm going to have, but that's ok as it's still quite far out. First, I'm going to take some time out of work to capture that true feeling of freedom in which I don't need to do anything except the things that I want to... I felt it during my 3-month sabbatical in 2004 when I was traveling in South America, and I hope I will find it again this year!
The plan is like this; drive off into the sunrise on 1st June and do a big au revoir - farewell road trip through Canada, going back to places that I cherished and exploring new areas that I haven't been yet. I have some ideas where I want to go; Haida Gwaii in the west and Labrador in the east are definitely on the itinerary, however as you can see below that's over 7,000 km apart, so I have some choices to make in between!

There are many more important things I need to sort out before I leave so creating that plan will have to wait for now. I'll have my camping gear with me, so between campgrounds, motels, hotels & AirBnB I should be able to find a place to stay each night. I'll go back to the GTA mid-September once the rain starts and temperatures drop; by then I'll likely also be tired of traveling... selling the car & organizing my last things shouldn't take too long and then I'll be off to Europe to spend the last months of the year at my parents and reconnecting with long-time friends. I left Europe in 2006 so it will be good to be back there for a while and ground myself in the past before embarking into the unknown future. And then once I've obtained a visa, I'll be off to Chile in the new year in search of my destiny!
That's it for this week... I want to include pictures in all my blogs, so I thought of sharing pics of my front yard just two weeks apart; the top one was taken on 10th March and the second one on 26th March. It's amazing how quickly things can change once the wheels are set in motion (e.g. melting snow by increased sun energy) ... I believe the same applies to me; after having thought things through for a long time, now I've actually made the decision, I'm certain that things will go very fast & I'll be on my way in no time!

"Standing Up for a Friend"
Summary: When Paul Bearer says Ashley is weak for having been friends with the Undertaker and Kane when they were children, the Deadman stands up for her. 10th installment of Two Brothers, One Friend, Many Stories series. Kayfabe details used only.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of the pro wrestling gimmicks/characters used here. I only own my original characters.
Ashley McCormick had quickly gotten used to being the manager of her childhood best friend. This was impressive when one considered the fact that her first official day on the job was July's In Your House pay per view. TV show taping days, constant traveling by plane and rental car, and live TV appearances on WWF programming were tiresome; copious amounts of caffeine were occasionally needed. Nonetheless, the Undertaker knew that he had made the right choice to put in a good word for his best friend to get her this job. The single mom not only knew how to keep them on budget, she listened to his opinions on plans for what he would want to do in each match, was willing to compromise, and was happy that she didn't have to wear "sexy" clothing; she usually donned jeans and t-shirts with sneakers or more business casual clothing and shoes as needed depending on whether she was accompanying him to a match or meeting with higher-ups, respectively. The everyday clothes were meant to show off her tomboyish nature. Ashley didn't wear very much make-up at all but never complained about any of the female wrestlers who wore more of it; she wasn't one to complain about choices others made when it came to their looks. She had other things to think about.
On July 14th, 1997's episode of Raw, the Undertaker had a dark match against Bret Hart and Stone Cold Steve Austin in a triple threat match for the WWF championship that would only be seen by the live audience in the Freeman Colosseum in San Antonio, Texas at the very end of the show. What would happen that night after the match was something that Ashley couldn't forget. Like clockwork, she heard the sound of the Undertaker's music and would follow him out as Tony Chimel announced, "Making his way to the ring accompanied by Ashley McCormick! From Death Valley, weighing in at 305 pounds, he is the World Wrestling Federation champion, the Undertaker!"
Many people cheered for the Deadman; Ashley spotted a sign saying "Ashley + Taker=Odd Friendship" in the audience as they walked. That person was correct, but she didn't care. She was not to get involved in this match as it was a triple threat against two individuals whom she would have no chance against in any kind of fight. She could still cheer for her friend and give him encouragement, though. "Come on, Undertaker! You've got this!" She had shouted at one point.
Of course, the Deadman retained his championship, and the crowd would go home happy. He and Ashley had soon driven back to the hotel they were staying in.
"You did great tonight, Undertaker." Ashley said as they walked through the lobby and down one hall to get to an elevator. She couldn't help but smile, more than happy enough for the both of them. After all, she wore her heart on her sleeve. "Do you want any snacks before we go to sleep?"
"No, thank you, but I appreciate the offer." He replied. He was exhausted but not showing it.
The Undertaker also didn't seem to visibly react when he heard a young boy who was heading back to a room with his parents not far from him saying "Isn't Ashley McCormick really brave to be friends with the Undertaker, Mom? Look at her!"
"I'm sure she is, but please leave them alone. They need sleep just like you do." The boy's mother could be heard saying as she opened the door to the room her family was staying in.
Ashley sighed as she and her childhood friend got into the elevator and went up to the second floor. "It's taking me a while to get used to those kinds of comments. I suppose that comes with fame regardless of what one is famous for."
"You are not the only one who has struggled to deal with that." The Deadman replied as they got out of the elevator and went to a vending machine so that Ashley could get a package of two Reese's peanut butter cups for herself; she did want a snack before going to bed. "By the way, there's a camera crew here."
"They film the most random stuff, don't they?" Ashley joked; she knew the possibility of this happening was likely as it had been mentioned in her contract. "I might be able to handle it." She knew whatever they caught on camera would likely be put on WWF TV shows, so she needed to be a good example for younger family members of hers who would see it.
That was when she heard a not so shrill but still familiar voice saying, "I thought you were tough enough to face anything, Ashley McCormick!"
Ashley rolled her eyes as she saw Paul Bearer in front of her. "Oh, shut up and jump in a lake, Paul!" She wasn't saying anything worse just in case kids were in nearby rooms as she put some coins in the vending machine and selected the snack she wanted, retrieving it the moment it dropped down. She then walked away.
"You're a coward and weak for being friends with the Undertaker and Kane as a little child! You ruined everything for me!" The mortician turned manager called after her.
The Undertaker immediately grabbed Paul's neck. He was glaring at his ex-manager but keeping himself calm. "You are absolutely wrong. Ashley being kind, loving, and many other things considered virtuous in a world in which cruelty, hatred, and other vices seem to be the norm makes her much stronger than one might think. She doesn't let others walk all over her despite this and could never be called a doormat. Being a good example to her children and other younger family members is not a weakness either as it shows that she has hope that her loved ones can also make the right choices in life by being inspired by her. I respect Ashley for holding onto her beliefs despite every horrible thing she has dealt with because she knows the difference between courage and recklessness. She has shown more courage in walking away from you than she would have in fighting you because she knows you are not worth getting herself hurt over. You betrayed me for Mankind and that plus the other awful things you did were all your fault, not anyone else's. Ashley, on the other hand, has always taken responsibility for her actions, and that is why I gave her the chance to work with me. She is a much better manager than you, and if she didn't have to go home in September, I'd be happy to have her work with me for much longer. I can not say anything similar about you. If you do not leave her and her loved ones alone, then there will be hell to pay." Then the Phenom delivered a choke slam to Paul before heading to his and Ashley's room. At that point, the camera crew had stopped filming.
Ashley went in as soon as her friend had caught up with her; once both of them were in the room, she locked the door. "Thank you for standing up for me, Mark." She said, the gratitude made obvious by her tears of relief as she sat down on the bed closest to the window. She quickly wiped them away with a tissue from her purse and then ate her peanut butter cups. She then threw her trash away and sat back down.
"You're welcome. I meant every word that I said, and Paul Bearer knows it. I hope the creatures of the night and others know it as well." He replied calmly as he sat down on the other bed.
"Same here. Did you want to take a shower before we go to sleep? I don't need one right now." Ashley quickly changed the subject.
"I'll let you brush your teeth first." He insisted.
Ashley went into the bathroom, closing the door. She brushed and flossed her teeth and washed her face as she had already had a bathroom break before leaving the arena. She then left the bathroom and got into the bed she would sleep in for the night after taking her socks and shoes off. She was wearing a dark blue t-shirt and black shorts as they would be comfortable to sleep in.
By the time the Deadman had finished his shower, dried off, and put on clothing that would be comfortable to sleep in, Ashley had fallen asleep. He turned off the bathroom light and the light in the main room before getting into bed. It had been a long night, and they would have to get up early to catch their next flight, but for now, the unusual pair of friends could get some much needed rest.

Pinehurst No. 10 Nears Completion and a No. 11 Will Follow

The Pinehurst area has dubbed itself “Cradle of American Golf,’’ and there’s no argument here – especially given what’s coming soon. The Pinehurst Resort has announced that it’ll open its 10th course, called Pinehurst No. 10, on April 3, 2024. Soon after that, the U.S. Golf Association will open its Golf House Pinehurst to the public on July 1, with the World Golf Hall of Fame to be ready soon after that. The USGA is moving its headquarters from New Jersey to Pinehurst, and the Hall of Fame is being shifted from St. Augustine, FL. Construction is well underway on both projects, to be located between The Carolina Hotel and the No. 1 tee of Pinehurst No. 2, the site of the 2024 U.S. Open in June. Opening a 10th course may be more significant for the golf traveler – especially when you know that Pinehurst No. 11 is already on the drawing board. No. 10 also has USGA ties. “Pinehurst gave us 40 acres of land over there, some of which will be used as our test pavilion for clubs and balls’ compliance,’’ said Janeen Driscoll, director of brand communications for the USGA. Turfgrass research may also be done there, too. First things first. No. 10 will have a good story to tell once it opens. Reservations are already being taken for players wanting to be among the course’s first players. It’ll be the first original course built by Pinehurst in nearly three decades. No. 10 is a Tom Doak design that was put together in a surprisingly short time on land that once housed The Pit, a Dan Maples design that was built in the early 1980s. Its revival was rumored for a long time. This is no revival story, however. “The Pit was successful for a long period,’’ said Bob Farren, director of golf course & grounds management at Pinehurst. “Traveling guys always wanted to play The Pit. It had its niche. It was really a unique golf course – rugged, short, mounds of dirt. It was successful for 25 years. Then Michael Strantz built Tobacco Road.’’ This old clubhouse contains the last remnants of The Pit course, which was closed in 2009 Farren describes Tobacco Road as “a larger-scale version of The Pit.’’ “It became the next must-play course, and that didn’t bode well for The Pit, ‘’ said Farren. “In 2008-09, we owned the property by it, and The Pit had been closed. Pinehurst bought it in 2010, and that brought us up to 900 acres over there.’’ For a decade, nothing was done with that land; then, the decision-makers came to an agreement. Doak would build a new course there, but getting the project going wasn’t easy. “Tom wanted to do the job but couldn’t do it until 2025 or 2026 (because of other projects he was working on),’’ said Farren. “We wanted it done this year. Tom said that could be done, but it must be finished by September. We had doubts about that, what with getting permits and things like that.’’ Getting a crew together at short notice was a problem, too. A New Jersey firm said it could have 65 people there in January, but two-thirds would have to be taken away (for other projects) in six months. No problem. The work would begin. Clearing started in late December of 2022, and the real work started in January. Angela Moser came on site as Doak’s associate architect, and when we visited in mid-September, Pinehurst No. 10 looked very much like a soon-to-be intriguing golf course. While that work was being done, the Pinehurst hierarchy was already making plans for No. 11. Nothing’s been announced yet, but Farren is sure it will be coming. The architects have been chosen, and preliminary work has begun. This project has an interesting history, as well. “Robert Trent Jones (Sr.) had owned the property there, and we bought it,’’ said Farren. “Rees Jones (son of Robert Sr.) had built our No. 7 course and the first version of No. 4.’’ A Jones-designed course was planned for that property when Pinehurst bought the land. “Then 9/11 happened. We had wanted to build a village there, but then we had to put a chain on the gates,’’ said Farren. That’s where the No. 11 project stands now, but probably not for long. “No. 10 will be a concept for 3-5 years, then it’ll be a destination by itself with No. 11 beside it,’’ said Farren. “We’ve got the routing on the ground. There’ll be cottages so people can stay on the property.’’ A tour of No. 10 with Farren verified his claim that “it’ll be an entirely different course than The Pit. It’ll be cut from the same fabric as No. 2 and No. 4 together – broad, expansive fairways, centipede turf rough with native landscape, and some wiregrass plants in the bunkers.’’ The 10th hole of No. 10 will be a 640-yard monster with lots of humps and bumps. There won’t be much water on the course, mainly just an irrigation pond at No. 17, and when it opens, the course will be walking-only with caddies. With 75 feet of elevation change, it’ll make for a good walking course. The par-4 eighth will be the most talked about hole on Pinehurst No. 10 Nos. 9 and 15 will share a tee placement. There’ll be three types of bunkers, and they’ll be hazards with native plants in them. A bald eagle has made a home at No. 10 but the most talked about hole will be the par-4 eighth. The tee shot there will be over (or around) an unusually high mound, and four more such mounds surround the green. It’ll be a hole you won’t forget. One thing won’t be ready at opening. There won’t be a clubhouse until 2025. The last remnant of The Pit is its old clubhouse. It’s still standing and has been used to house interns working on the course. For now, it’s a landmark, but down the road, probably not. For more information, visit pinehurst.com/no-10. Photos courtesy of Joy Sarver and Pinehurst Resort. Read the full article
