Fumble Dimension’s quest to ruin soccer and everything else
Tumblr media
Kofie and Jon finally ran an experiment so irresponsible that they got canned by a video game. After five hours of misadventures, it was bound to happen.
The disastrous conclusion to our Football Manager experiment is above. We lost a soccer match 22-1. We got fired. We learned nothing.
While we’re here, Jon took the time to review the hours and hours of Fumble Dimension’s video game experiments that led us to this point. Every previous episode can be found below.
Even by Secret Base standards, Fumble Dimension is a particularly ambitious, weird project. When Kofie joined up with my team, which would eventually become part of Secret Base, we both knew we wanted to produce a video game series. We also both love the original run of The Twilight Zone. Taking inspiration from one of the greatest television shows ever made, Kofie wanted the title of the series to reference some kind of place. He suggested “_______ Dimension,” I added “Fumble,” and off we went.
Fumble Dimension is the sort of show I would have made years ago if I could. Years ago, when I was producing Breaking Madden, I saw so much more potential in more ambitious, horrifying video game experiments. Thanks to Kofie, we were finally able to make that happen.
The basketball episode
For the series premiere, we decided to resurrect an old experiment from the “NBA Y2K” era: what if good basketball players stopped being born? What if, year after year, every available player in the NBA draft was a useless dope with zero basketball skills?
In NBA 2K19, we created a draft class full of 5’4 players with the lowest possible skill rating in every category. Then we simulated decades of NBA basketball, all the way into the 2050s. Every year, we fed this draft class into the league. As the stars we know and love began to retire, the ranks of players we recognized grew thinner and thinner, until none of them were left at all.
This time around, we did a far more thorough job of tracking statistics and recording footage of what this nightmare NBA actually looked like. In the end, Kofie and I actually played a game against each other with these abominable teams, a fitting conclusion to one of the funniest projects I’ve ever worked on.
The football episode
(This is Part 1. Part 2 is here.)
This is the thing about sports video game series: sometimes, in some sense or another, the old ones are better. Year after year, they tend to remove beloved features and game modes, and add new ones. NFL Head Coach is more than a decade old, but its play creation tool is far more extensive and in-depth than anything you’ll find in a modern Madden game. That’s the game we dug out of the archives, because that’s the game that would let us run the experiment we wanted: running one, and only one, offensive play for an entire season.
We did everything we could think of to create the best play possible. A couple guest stars, Madden champion Young Kiv and football writer Richard Johnson, stopped by to take their best shot. In the end, against all odds, we won a few games with the 2008 Lions, arguably the worst team in NFL history.
The golf episode
An episode of Fumble Dimension requires tons and tons of research and experimentation before we even begin production. Kofie typically spends weeks looking through piles of sports games, testing out their “create-a” modes, and identifying which have the most potential for fun and chaos.
If he hadn’t put in that time, we would’ve have found The Golf Club, a game with an incredibly robust course editor. You can build the golf course of your nightmares and drop all kinds of junk on the fairway, from livestock to buildings to yachts.
We could have just built a terrible golf course and left it at that, but Kofie had a much more brilliant idea: to let our viewers design it. The logistics of this were daunting, but Kofie figured it out: he’d place a grid over the course and then set up a public Google form, in which people could detail exactly which item they wanted to place on a particular square of the grid. This was Fumble Dimension at its finest. We take our goofing around with the utmost seriousness.
In the end, you, the viewers, created a golf course so large that Kofie actually had to build it across several different save files. Then we played it. Kofie and I stayed late at the office that night, because it took far longer to play through than we’d expected. I’ll admit that I had a terrible, TERRIBLE time. Kofie can attest to this. I was so mad. This was the worst time I’ve ever had playing a video game, and it was all your fault. Thank you.
The baseball episode
Kofie thought it would be interesting to produce a companion episode to Dorktown’s “History of the Seattle Mariners” project. Continuing the crowdsourcing element we’d used in the golf episode, Kofie set up a form and let our viewers make every single decision for the 2001 Mariners. Every pitch, every swing, everything. Then we ran the answers through Out of the Park Baseball, the most in-depth baseball strategy game on the market.
We knew this would be a mess. We weren’t surprised when you told us to hit 3,000 batters. This one was more of an exploration of how a video game responds when you try to fundamentally break a sport, and the results were fascinating.
Kofie also took some artistic license with this one, threading in a horror-movie element that turned out to be completely appropriate for this disaster. As the director and main editor of Fumble Dimension, Kofie lays out the blueprints for how, exactly, we’ll pull each experiment off, but he also finds ways to pull stories out of them. It’s really incredible.
The soccer episode
(This is Part 1. Part 2 is here.)
And finally, our biggest experiment yet. With the help of our friend, soccer journalist Kim McCauley, we pulled off a dual experiment, trying to create both the best and worst soccer formations possible. We used the long-running hit series Football Manager, which might be the most fascinating video game we’ve explored so far. As Kim told us, even the best FM players in the world have trouble with this game every time they play it. There are just so many moving parts, chaotic elements, and total unknowns.
We reached a milestone this time: at long last, we did such a terrible job that the video game fired us. It was part of the payoff for a project that was several months in the making.
So there you have ‘em: five hours, 10 minutes, and 25 seconds of Fumble Dimension. To all our videos, we want to say a) thank you, and b) we have lots more planned for 2021. And to catch them when they drop, be sure to subscribe to Secret Base on YouTube and follow us on Twitter.

Something for the Weekend: The Best VR Discounts on Steam
Looking for something new to refresh your virtual reality (VR) senses on a Sunday morning? VRFocus has scoured the depths of Steam to find you ten of the best discounts for a quick-and-easy fix this weekend. Whether you’re planning on using HTC Vive, Oculus Rift or the OSVR hacker dev kit, below you’ll find some of the best bargains in VR today.
Rez Infinite
Compatibility: Oculus Rift and HTC Vive
Rez Infinite made its debut on PC earlier this week, and for those yet to jump in there’s still time to grab Enhance Games’ VR masterpiece at the discounted launch price of £15.99 GBP. The typical price of Rez Infinite will be £19.99 when the discount ends on 23rd August 2017, but even then there’s no argument that Rez Infinite will be worth the asking price.
Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality
Compatibility: Oculus Rift and HTC Vive
A hugely popular VR title, Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality has a limited time sale for this weekend only. Offering a 25% discount, you can pick up Owlchemy Labs’ second major VR release – following the massively successful Job Simulator: The 2050 Archives – for just £17.24. The typical price of Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality stands at £22.99, so there’s no better time to become a Morty clone.
Gal*Gun VR
Compatibility: Oculus Rift and HTC Vive
Another new release, Gal*Gun VR publisher Inti Creates Co. is offering a launch discount of 15%. Priced at £19.54 opposed to the typical price of £22.99, you can ‘live the dream of being surrounded by hordes of cute girls who are madly in love you’ for a reduced price until 16th August 2017.
House of the Dying Sun
Compatibility: Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and OSVR
Coming to the end of a week long deal, House of the Dying Sun is offering a discount of 50% for just one more day. Now priced at £7.49, instead of the typical pricing of £14.99, House of the Dying Sun is a tactical space shooter that puts you in the cockpit of the Empire’s most deadly interceptor as you hunt down the enemies of your dying empire.
Overkill VR
Compatibility: Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and OSVR
In support of a recent update for Overkill VR, Game Troopers has begun a special price promotion. Available now for £10.49, a discount of 30% from the typical price of £14.99, Overkill VR is a first-person shooter (FPS) videogame that offers a huge variety of customisable weaponry as it throws you into a heated and deadly warzone.
Fancy Skiing VR
Compatibility: Oculus Rift and HTC Vive
Contrary to much of the violence and comedy coming to modern VR, Fancy Skiing VR, developed by HashVR Studio, is structured on real skiing. Players use the motion-controllers of the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive as ski poles to get power and lean left or right to control the direction. Fancy Skiing VR is available for just £4.89 until 25th August 2017.
Kittypocalypse
Compatibility: Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and OSVR
A tower defence videogame that aimed to make the most of VR early after the consumer launch of the modern hardware, Kittypocalypse undoubtedly feel short. However, it’s less of an ask to invest the title at its current discounted price of £5.49 rather than the typical price of £10.99: a 50% discount lasting just one more day.
Operation Warcade VR
Compatibility: Oculus Rift and HTC Vive
Operation Warcade VR launched back in June 2017, and with it brought the promise of an Operation Wolf modernisation in VR. However, now it’s not just about shooting cardboard cutouts of bad guys, but taking to the land, sea and air using everything from throwing knives to missiles to take out anyone who stands in your way. Operation Warcade VR is available for £8.99, a 40% discount from £14.99, for another day.
Duo
Compatibility: HTC Vive
A HTC Vive exclusive, DUO is an arcade videogame designed from the ground up for VR. A brick-breaker available for the bargain price of £5.99, developer NiVision has seen fit to encourage more people to experience their second VR release by offering a discounted price of £2.99 for a limited time.
Craft Keep VR
Compatibility: Oculus Rift and HTC Vive
Craft Keep VR launched earlier this year as an intriguing combination of Job Simulator: The 2050 Archives and Minecraft. Set within a fantasy world of dragons, dungeons and foul-mouthed customers, you are an alchemist-blacksmith forging weapons and brewing potions. And now you can jump into the comedic world of Craft Keep VR for the discounted price of £7.36, saving 33% off the typical price of £10.99.

My Idea
I am currently thinking through several different environment settings as well as level progression and key features, some of which I may implement. Due to the target audience I feel the best kind of art style may be cartoonish. Like the style of Job Simulator.
Tumblr media
Image of Job Simulator
Job Simulator: the 2050 Archives | Owlchemy Labs. (2016). Retrieved from https://jobsimulatorgame.com/
I have a theme park setting with arcade like games such as whack-a-mole and a target shooting gallery.  Players would try to beat a certain score on the machines and once beaten they will move on to the next area via a roller coaster car.
Another setting is a forest setting as I believe this would have a calming affect on the patient. I haven’t been able to come up with many mini game ideas except a treasure hunt.
I’d like to implement a system so that the children can wear headphones while they play but visitors can let them know that their in the room and to stop playing such as doctor or nurses, such as button prompts from the keyboard of the computer that will pop up on screen.
I haven’t thought of a way for social interaction between patients with my current ideas except for a global leader board or 2-player games.
I feel the currently my scope is quite achievable but that will change as I develop a better idea of where my project is headed. I feel the system to allow communication without stopping the patient from using headphones as I feel having the headphones on will immerse them more. Interaction between players will be easy to do once I work out how I want to do it.
Children in hospital will greatly benefit the more immersive the game is and the more enjoyment they get out of it. If some kind of co-op can be introduced it will help them not feel so alone as parents and care givers cannot stay 24/7. If a system is implemented to tell the child if a certain person is in the room it will help doctors, nurses, visitors and lunch deliveries tell the child without upsetting them or scaring them which could lead to injuries. Parents will also benefit from this because it will let them take comfort knowing their child isn’t completely alone and upset. This will help hospitals keep their younger patients happier and could possibly even make them more compliant when having to do unpleasant things such as blood tests and medications.
However this concept can also help patients at home or even just people who find the game relaxing and fun to play. Also leading to more research in this field which can further the technology and get it to more children.

Virtual reality and simulations
Multimedia systems are used for virtual reality and simulations. Virtual reality (VR) is the use of computer modelling and simulation to enable a person to interact with an artificial environment. VR immerses the user in an environment that simulates reality through the use of interactive devices, such as goggles, head-up displays, gloves, or body suits.
In a common VR application, the user wears a helmet with a screen for each eye to view animated images of a simulated environment. Motion sensors that pick up the user’s movements and adjust the view on the screens create the illusion of reality. Data-gloves equipped with force-feedback devices provide the sensation of touch. The user picks up and manipulates objects that he sees in the virtual environment. VR is highly interactive
An example of a virtual reality game is Job Simulator: The 2050 Archives, as shown in the gameplay video above. Job Simulator: The 2050 Archives is a virtual reality simulation video game developed and published by Owlchemy Labs for Microsoft Games and Playstation 4, in which players participate in comical approximations of real-world jobs.

Rescuties VR
One of the best VR games which requires from you to catch different cute little things like corgi puppies and babies it is the Rescuities VR game. What you should do here is to catch the falling cute little things using your Oculus Touch controllers and place them onto whatever they should be.
It’ prompt, wild and seldom sorrowful if you lose a baby and watch it leaping off a rock. The easy proposition results to various situations, open up unlockables and enable you to complete certain goals also, and all of that on a budget.
Toybox
In one of the top VR games like is the Toybox. You will get yourself in a virtual toybox burning things, breaking/throwing/shooting/punching and primarily having a lot of joy being a child that plays with toys. Also, you can play the game with your friends in case that they have their own controllers.
Medium
Medium actually is not really a game, it is more like Google’s Tilt Brush on Stream, yet it is still deserving to check it out. If you want to paint or to sculpt, this game will be perfect for you as to show yourself in VR.
Bullet Train
As one of the Oculus Rift supported games, this game will provide you the chance to experience shooting persons in a really crazy way. It is very similar to Superhot VR since you can manipulate time and teleport.
If you are a fan of Superhot, this game will be perfect for you. Today, the demo is a big hit and is on Touch so everybody can try it at home.
Superhot VR
As one of the Oculus Rift compatible games, Superhot is now on the Rift too. The shooter has an unusual method of managing time – when he moves forwards – the clock ticks, when he stops – everything pauses.

Dragon Front
As it was very addictive to play this game on the first tryout, it also remains very addictive game now.
Minecraft
Minecraft it is still the very same blocky world game, yet when it is played in VR, you can experience it from a very new and different perspective. Either way, it is very entertaining game to play.
Chronos
Chronos is an awesome choice of game for those who used to play traditional video games and that are looking to show off themselves in the world of VR. This is a virtual reality game that is full of sword duels where you have to carefully land bowls and fight against your enemies as to stay alive.
In Chronos you get to see the game vie the eyes of your character that you’re playing and you can control and watch the action from a different perspective, something like a recording an event with a camera.
Edge of Nowhere
Instead of going on the usual path, utilizing a first person perspective and playing as if you are actually in the moment of the character and seeing via the character eyes, will give you a fun of a lifetime. Just like in Chronos, the camera is putted behind the character you’re palying.
This game is another one of those virtual reality games in which the game feel like it can easily be a more traditional game, yet it does something new to the platform as to find some ways to scare the players.
With the camera putted behind the main character, the outcome in Edge of Nowhere is becoming more psychological, secretly taking on horror.
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
In this party game, people share a room and only one individual is in virtual reality. The person that wears the headset may see and interact with a covered bomb in special panels and each of panels are presenting a puzzle that need to be solved as to defuse the bomb.
As the VR player has no idea of what any of the seeing means, it is to other players in the room to assist and explain him how he should defuse the bomb manually. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes requires good communication, quick thinking and great teamwork.
It leads the players through hilarious moments while they are trying to provide the right info in the manual. It is a perfect mix of a virtual reality game a perfectly spent time with your friends.
Windlands
Whindlands might be one of the VR games that are movement heavy and make nearly everyone sick because your brain illustrates movement that your body isn’t authenticating, following into a terrible nausea reaction. But, luckily for us, it is not that kind of game.
It is a sort of immersice virtual reality experience that fans are hoping to see on the game platform. In Windsland you should leap incredible heights and use a grappling hook as to swing across huge gaps, whilst analyzing an ancient and strange land. An update that have been performed in October, has improved the Windlands’ visuals over all platforms.
EVE: Valkyrie
In this Oculus Rift game you will be placed as a spaceship fighter pilot. You will have to shoot through space locales like asteroid fields and shipyards and you will have to hunt down and fight enemy ships and in the same time you should avoid returned fire and missile locks.
It is a type of game that will make you sick because it is a crazy game in terms of motion. Valkyrie is on the top of the virtual reality games that will give you real excitement, if you can handle it. So, if you wanted to be a spaceship pilot, this game is perfect for you!
Technolust
Technolust is a type of game where you join in as a hacker to cross virtual landscapes as to steal information from the host of bad corporations. It is a dark, totally retro futuristic and grimy game, all of which perform it worth more than a quick glimpse.
Just imagine the type of virtual dystopia that came out from films and sci-fi novels from the 80s and 90s, and there is Technolust. Here you have more games within this game that are fun and cool addition, adding various layers to the virtual reality experience.
Lucky’s Tale
Lucky’s Tale is a great way to ease into virtual reality even if this is another game that doesn’t actually need to be in VR. It is a game that is making the use of the way the Rift is presenting players with attendance in a space interesting.
This game is similar to Mario 64, yet with the character acting as the camera that hangs above the action, your capacity to take a look in the space does some amazing stuffs to the standard formula of the platform. Here, each level changes in the way you are dealing with it.
Fated: The Silent Oath
Here you can find yourself in the character of a man on the edge if death. You and your family are returning to your village after you have had an accident and a gift from the gods kept you from Valhalla, yet it cost you your voice. Things are going to get weirder in a Norse mythology type of way.
Fated: The Silent Oath has a little bit slow, yet heavy on character growth and plot. This game it is a mix of mystery and magic, Norse mythology and virtual reality as to put you in the shoes of the character that is just trying to save his people from total destruction.
DEAD & BURIED
In case that you want to see the best use of your Oculus Touch controllers and turn them into a six Western shooters, than Dead & Buried is the perfect game for you.
The game’s point is correct, firing is bulky and there are some things greater than the reload repairman, that includes flipping your wrist to the left to remove the barrel and then right to snap it back in.
You can duck and hide behind cover, or lean or stand up to fire at your opponents over the bar. You can start runaway train thefts, co-operate in some actions and all kinds of ghostly events and what is a big plus, you’ve got yourself a virtual reality worthy of your attention.
The things are becoming better in multiplayer with the opportunity to fight your friends or work together with them as to defend off the creatures.
PROJECT CARS
Project Cars is really, like really, one of the toughest and finest racing games that are ever made and every one of us should be aware of this game by now.
It is a very real racing game that will make you a better racer. Here you can effectively observe your reflectors and blind spots, and can properly strive for the top of every edge than with either on-screen racer.
Project Cars has a lot of content and a determined, devoted area to race against, since it is a game that is around for almost a year. All of the content is incorporated in the Rift model.
It could not be the primary game that you will want to show off to your friends however, it’s the game that you’ll still be playing weeks and months since you get your Rift.
Adr1ft
If you haven’t by now heard of this game, it is a PC game that is available on Stream right now and offers something alike to the Gravity, in case it was a game. Anyway, Adr1ft is a game that is set in the year of 2037 and is challenging the players – astronauts to try to survive a failure on a ruined space station and dodge drifting off into the infinite empty of space.
The visuals are very impressive, and it must provide the users with a wonderful but stimulating virtual reality adventure. The only thing that you should do is to survive.
Elite: Dangerous
In terms of the play and graphically, Elite: Dangerous is an amazing game which only gets finer when is experienced in VR. This very popular game was going through great success recently, particularly after its well-given Horizons update that enabled players to arrive on planet-size planets.
Here, you mostly spend your time in a buggy cockpit flying into the space, fighting with your rivals and scavenging with monitors that are displaying many pieces of data about the environment and the ship itself.
Using the VR headset on, you can experience yourself as a pilot. You can also glance down and observe your ‘body’ and whenever you use a controller to control the spaceship in real life; the actions will be simulated into the game. It’s amazingly remarkable and allows you to look out of the windowpane to track down your opponents or take in some of the beautiful visions you’ll reach across everywhere in the galaxy.
Subnautica
This is a really amusing game that is situated at sea. You will spend all the time playing in the water and you will be surrounded with fishes that aren’t from this planet.
This is a survival game and you will need to craft some items from submarines to diving equipment and also terraform the sea floor as to make it more comfortable for your human colleagues. You will need to go through underwater volcanoes, hostile wildfire and truck-sized jellyfish if you want to survive and also have a fun of a lifetime.
Damaged Core
Damaged Core is one of the coolest rift games that you can ever buy and it is the coolest first person shooter. Here you will need to deal with evil armies of robots whose mission is to destroy the human kind.
You will teleport from one robot to another, take over their operations and use their weapon against them. It is a fast, exciting shooter that you will absolutely adore.
Rock Band VR
This game is a rearranged game from the Guitar Hero game where you should pick up a guitar, put on your headset and be prepared to have a whole lot of excitement and amusement on a virtual stage.
If you are a fan of Rock Band or Guitar Hero, this game is a perfect match for you. It is a unique game with the best band behind you and the only thing you should do here is to have a fun of a lifetime!
Eagle Flight
The only thing you should do here is to find a friend, defend your territory and catch some fish from the Seine River. You are a young bird in a nest above Paris and you will have to live a life of an eagle.
It is a cool game to which you will want to come back to as to relax and show off yourself as an eagle in a beautiful city of Paris.
The Climb
The Climb is more like interactive cinematic experience than it is a game. Here you will have to scale up the mountains to the top, all during encircled by some of the most delightfully performed CGI scenery you have ever seen. You can as well race your friend and deal with brave precarious obstacles like wires among gondolas or peaks.
With this game you can overcome your fear of heights because in this game you will surely want to look down and as you play in virtual reality, you must deal with your fear.
Landfall
In Landfall you can get a close glance of your team as to form great strategy, or you can stand above everything else and get to look at the whole field. This game is a mix of adventure and a Real-Time Strategy and it is a multiplayer combat game.
Even if the solo missions can bring you a lot of amusement, the real adventure comes at the multiplayer part of the participation in this game.
You can notice the appearance of your enemy on the opposite side of the map and speak to them during the play. This game also supports two-on-two multiplayer, hence you and your friend can create a flawless plan together.
Conclusion:
This list of games is including the best virtual reality games for the Oculus Rift. Nowadays, there are hundreds of VR games available for the Rift, and numerous of them are ports of 2D games.

I played the ridiculous and delightful new ‘Rick and Morty’ game — here’s what it was like
As a devout “Rick & Morty” superfan, I’m often an evangelist. “You haven’t seen ‘Rick &Morty’? How lucky you are to get to experience it for the first time, totally fresh!” I might say.
It’s one of those shows — like “Arrested Development,” or “Community,” or “Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job!” — where it’s almost as famous for its cult following as it is for the show itself.
While fans eagerly await the much-anticipated third season (expected to arrive this summer on Adult Swim), there’s a new game starring “Rick & Morty” that’s planned for a much sooner launch: “Rick & Morty: Virtual Rick-Ality.”
Sounds ridiculous (Rick-diculous?), right? It absolutely is. I spent 20 minutes with the game at a recent event. Here’s what it’s like!
The premise is simple: You’re a clone of Morty, and you’re tasked with completing various insane objectives by — who else? — Rick Sanchez.
Owlchemy Labs/Adult Swim Games
The structure of “Virtual Rick-Ality” is similar to that of “Job Simulator: The 2050 Archives,” which makes sense given that the same company made both games (Owlchemy Labs).
In “Job Simulator,” you were tasked with — as the title suggests — simulating various jobs in VR. The twist is that all the jobs were re-creations of mundane tasks as viewed through the perspective of intelligent robots that run society in 2050. Something as simple as being a short-order cook became a comical and ridiculous experience, with ingredients flying everywhere in a “Muppets”-esque fashion.
“Virtual Rick-Ality” takes that concept and moves it into a more narrative-based progression. There are momentary tasks that feel panicky in the same way many “Job Simulator” levels did, but you’re just as likely to spend 10 minutes exploring every nook and cranny of the space you’re in. And “Virtual Rick-Ality” rewards that … Read More Here...

Blizzard Entertainment’s multiplayer shooter Overwatch was honored with the prize for Game of the Year at tonight’s 17th annual Game Developers Choice Awards (GDCA) ceremony during the 2017 Game Developers Conference (GDC) at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.
Overwatch’s carefully calibrated balance and polished gameplay mechanics also earned the game the award for Best Design. An archive of the award ceremony, as well as the full presentation of the Independent Games Festival Awards (IGF Awards), can be viewed at http://twitch.tv/gdc.
Developer Playdead’s beautifully macabre and engrossing platformer, Inside, also earned two awards in total, for Best Audio and Best Visual Art. The awards reflect the strong artistry of the title, which depicts a dark conspiracy using a stark visual motif with foreboding lighting and haunting animation. Developer Campo Santo’s compelling first-person adventure game, Firewatch, was the final double award-winner of the night, earning the team the awards for Best Debut and Best Narrative. The game, which features the voice talent of Mad Men’s Rich Sommer, portrays a deeply engrossing tale that enwraps the player in a branching script filled with mystery, suspense, humor and longing.
The full slate of winners at tonight’s ceremony also includes the augmented reality (AR) game Pokemon Go by Niantic, which became a worldwide sensation and earned the award for Best Mobile/Handheld Game. The massively ambitious, procedurally-generated universe of No Man’s Sky earned developer Hello Games the Innovation Award, while the grandiose production and graphics in Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End earned that title the award for Best Technology. The charmingly off-kilter virtual reality (VR) game, Job Simulator: The 2050 Archives, received the award for Best VR/AR Game. The Audience Award is chosen among the entire selection of GDCA finalists using a public online voting process, and was presented to developer EA DICE for Battlefield 1.
The Game Developers Choice Awards honor the very best games of the year, and was created for and voted on by developers. Winners are selected by the Game Developers Choice Awards-specific International Choice Awards Network (ICAN), which is an invitation-only group comprised of leading game creators from all parts of the industry.
Every year, the Game Developers Choice Awards also recognize developers who have made significant contributions to the art, science and craft of video games with three special awards. This year, the Pioneer Award was given to Jordan Mechner, the game designer, programmer and screenwriter best known for creating the landmark series, Prince of Persia.
The Ambassador Award, which recognizes those whose actions have helped video games to “advance to a better place,” went to Mark DeLoura, for dedicating his life to the education and the productive use of technology within academia, the media and videogames, holding roles that include Senior Advisor for Digital Media during the Obama administration.
The Lifetime Achievement award was given to Tim Sweeney, the founder of Epic Games, and the creator of seminal game/creation tool ZZT and the influential Unreal Engine. Following the 1998 PC game Unreal, which Sweeney co-created, the game's engine became the underpinning for a slew of acclaimed games, including Epic's own Gears of War and Unreal franchises, as well as the BioShock series, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, and the Batman: Arkham series of games.
“This year’s amazing slate of winners is a testament to the diversity of experiences in games. Pokemon Go took gaming outdoors using AR, while Job Simulator showed how lo-fi aesthetics could meet cutting edge tech for a winning VR experience. Overwatch once again proved Blizzard’s uncanny ability to make a perfectly balanced multiplayer game, and Inside delved deep into our dark psyches to unearth our scariest nightmares,” said Meggan Scavio, General Manager of the Game Developers Conference. “These nominees speak to the strength of games as a medium, but also show the various textures and possible creative outlets that interactive entertainment can provide. Congrats to all of the winners and nominees for following their visions and thanks to all developers who strive to make amazing games for us day in and day out.”
