Tuesday 4 April 1837
8 10
12 5
No kiss quarter hour no ten minutes washing – breakfast at 9 10 at which hour F55° in the sun – A- read aloud 2pp. 8vo of French – out at 10 – in the stable – Charles Howarth came – to come tomorrow to do up repair the back stable (stall-partitions) – had him in about servants hall door bell to be rung by back-door people Charles asked if Joseph M- had spoken about letting the upper bed water off – yes! Charles begged me to consider about it – if let off as JM- proposed, I should loose ¾ of Dove house farms upper bed coal – thanked Charles – said he might mention it or not as he liked but if it was known he would get many an ill word for telling me – then in the cow house – the cow calved about before 10 last night Thomas Pearson would like the buy the calf (a quey) to keep, at a few days old – asked what he should give give – John said Aquilla Green had lately sold one for 7/6 (John guessed 15/. and was told, for ½ that) I said that would not do – if fit for the butcher what should be the price? a good calf would weight 20lbs. per quarter – 5 or 6 weeks old or more – customary to sink the offal and then pay for the weight of the quarters – I said the calf ought to be worth £2. oh! yes! and if sold in 5 weeks this would pay me better than 7/6 in a few days – a little while with Ingham + 2 – no mason here – went to Robert Mann + 3 at 12 just as they going to dinner – walked to him (from the new drain in Sour Ing get stone to wall it with by pulling up the low part of the main drain made by Pickells in Godley Ing) walked with him to beyond the Lodge – likes putting the Engine at the top of the Bank – sure we can get water – thinks there will be enough in the rag – plenty in the rag in the new bank and plenty at Bird cage – sauntered till Robert was out of sight then walked forward to Northgate – looked about there – the top court-yard will be large enough if I reserve part - from about 3 yards above the gateway fronting St. Annes’ street to the end of my property = 14 yards x 15 yards reserving the little rectangle a at the top – then to Whitley’s – ordered Beckmann and hints on buying a horse and bought flannel and riband at Fosters for cousin went to Farrer’s but nobody coming immediately walked out again – returned up the old bank about 2 – a little while with A- then with Bligh till A- off about 2 ¼ - then twenty minutes washing out again about 2 ¾ - with Robert + 3 (Frank carting stone for Ingham from Hipperholme quarry – his son John with 2 one horse carts bringing stone from the Pickells drain for Robert M- and carting to fill up the hollow (ancient road) between the 2 brook Ings down to the meer – then along the walk by Tilley holme to Listerwick and about there – with Joseph Mann till near 6 – then with John Oates – stood talking in his cow house till 6 25 – how to get water for the engine at the top of the bank – JO- said if I could get it in Godley lane I could get it at the top of the bank – the same water – from the same measures – might get rag water – or the same as got for John Bottomely – but if I had all the Sour Milk hall Godley lane water, it would not be enough for a condensing engine – JO- for a high pressure engine which would use the water hot, and might be supplied – I could not get the water cooled for a condenser – How said I does Mr. Haigh do for a 60 horse power engine – answer He has a great deal of water from the coal works, upper and lower bed – then cannot I have the same? yes! I suppose, said I, the low bed water would be about 65 yards to lift – yes! I could do that well enough JO- agreed – he said 2 horse power would lift as much as I wanted – but he would have a high pressure – why said I, has Holt a condenser – oh! because he had a great quantity of water – JO- knew many of the condensing engines in H-x in difficulty in summer to get the water sufficiently cooled 2 very nice high pressure engines pulling up coal inclined planes at Little Borough – he said if I had set my coal engine in the low corner of Pearons’ field where they 1st met with the upper bed coal in Long goit 3rd ultimo I should have had my colliery going now – that Long goit would not then have been wanted – a good job and a bad one – he always thought I should repent it – what a feeder of water it took from Mytholm mill, and, by setting my engine pit where I did, I did not loose 3 acres more coal – he said he wished to see the water in the meer – sure I should draw 5ft. if the banks would hold it – I said they were so ordered as to leave 2ft. to sink on – were ordered 2ft. higher than the water level – well said JO- they may hold it – but the by-wash is too low – I said that could easily be altered – yes! he agreed it could – who is right, and who wrong? nous verrons – home at 6 ½ - dressed – dinner at 6 ¾ - coffee – read the newspaper – came upstairs at 9 40 and till 10 40 wrote the whole of today – F30° at 10 ¾ pm fine frosty morning (hard frost out of the sun till towards noon) and fine day till about 1pm then a slight showers and several snow showers in the course of the afternoon one or 2 heavyish ones –

4 lessons.
A star, a piece of straw, a coin and a bracelet. To anyone else these things will mean nothing, but to me....they never let me forget my lesson. I keep and take these wherever I go.
The Bracelet - Given to me by my brother and best friend. To me it signifies the importance of family. Something that means the world to me and I remain thankful everyday that I have an amazing family.
The piece of straw - Split between the person that taught me how to love. Forever teaching me what it takes and means to love someone. The commitment and responsibilities. But also taught me what it means to lose someone that you’d give the world too. Both important life lessons.
The Star - It’s simple, everything’s 50% luck. Given to me before my travels by the beautiful Jo Tilley.
The Coin - Not only is it an American quarter but it’s my fidget spinner to some extent. I used it to take away my nerves and let me say or do things that I couldn't normally do because my mind would be doing overtime. It came into use when I came out to my mum! So it will always hold a strong lesson to me - Be brave!
Stay Happy, Stay gold x

Friday 7 June 1839
8 ¼
11 ½
gently rainy morning F60° inside and 57 ½° outside at 9 ¼ and went down to Robert Mann who had been near an hour ago wanting to speak to me – He came to speak to me about the burst up of water in Airgate mine – he and Joseph were afraid it was of serious consequence – they thought it was the dead water – I took this calmly saying it struck me at once that it would be best to give up the whole concern – but I would think about it and see him again after breakfast – breakfast from about 9 ¾ to 10 ½ - A- rode off to Cliff hill at 11, and I had Robert Mann (in the little breakfast room) from 11 to 1, and then sent him into the servants’ hall to dine with George who had just returned from Cliff hill with A- Had the estate plan and examined thoroughly into the circumstances of the dead water, meer-water, or Spiggs water and Robert and I clearly convinced that instead of a barrier of 60 yards (60 yards broad along the head of my coal-field lying up to the Spiggs water) the whole estate is not barrier enough – my coal is in a hole (as it were) and whenever we put down a pit, we have no better chance than at the water wheel engine pit (now for shortness to be called water pit) .:. for the same reason that the water wheel engine pit (now water pit) was abandoned, Listerwick pit and A.P. ought to be abandoned – and the farther we drive toward AP. the worse – Ended by saying I would stop where I was – and do no more mischief supposing the water met with to be really the dead water i.e. Spiggs water – to which Robert himself could make no objection but owned it would be best – for as I cannot loose my own coal without loosing that of all my neighbours, it is folly to pump for them gratis, and I will let the thing alone – the low bed coal being now got all around me in the dale to the north west, the empty space stands full of water and is the vis a tergo that pothers me – the water that burst up yesterday burst thro’ a master seam in the low bed stone, and lifted the corve up to the rood of the drift in an instant – the low bed stone lies immediately under the low (or soft) bed coal and is about 7 yards thick including the seat earth which varies in thickness – at Booth town it is 3ft. thick – but at Listerwick it is gone to nothing and the coal lies on the stone except a few inches of skegs a whitish, greyish, scaly sort of stone – this skegs pumps – and in this skegs yesterday and this morning 60 yards about from L.P. to A.P. (the whole distance = 150 yards) the water starts up – a stream as thick as a man’s arm – keeps one pump constantly going – Thomas Pearson and his brother George who had been waiting a long while then came in (about 1pm) and stood talking near an hour – Thomas came to introduce and speak for his brother who wished to take the upper Dove house (Pump, John Oates) farm – what rent? £80 – then they must give it up – they had thought of the old rent – no! I said that would not do should not let it again at £60 – there are £20 worth of cottages or easily might be – they talked
SH:7/ML/E/23/0060
and talked – I said I would not pledge myself to anything at present – should keep open for the colliery, or if I gave that up and built a worsted mill, for the mill – the tenant to be on written agreement to value on and off if he pleased – in which case, to pay of course the valuation of tenant right due to John Oates – It ended in my discovering that George P- thought of being married – wanted a place, and would in spite of the rent above named think about it if it was at liberty – I said JO. would certainly leave it – he had in fact given it up to me, and my sending him a notice to quit was a mere form – it appeared JO. had no idea of quitting unless he could get his valuation (that is what he himself thought he ought to have) – I said I had nothing to do with that – JO.’s valuer and Mr. Parker would settle that as also the matter of dilapidations – on the Pearsons’ going away about 2, sometime with A- and Mr. Horner – set them at work in the tower study – A- sketching the vale in water colours – then had DB. who said Holt measuring off, and wanted to see me and would be here in 2 hours – I had intended going to H-x to Messrs. P. and A- to tell P- to bring Mr. Stocks here tomorrow to hear what I had to say on the subject of the colliery – Perhaps we might come to some sort of terms as to the looses – I cannot let the coal as it is – nor should I under any circumstances unless (as I have always said) by ticket under conditions not binding me to take highest bidder, or in fact to let at all unless I had my price bid – waited for Holt talking to Booth about giving up the colliery and covering the pits with rag corves – then calculating the expense of building a small mill – 8 horse power = 12 worsted frames would require a 2 stories high building inside measure 14x13 yards outside measure 15x14 = 58 yards = 8 2/7 roods say 7 yards high including foundations and gable ends = about 60 roods double walling
including hewing work and everything at 35/. per rood = £105.0.0
Roofing at 42/. per square about 21 ½ squares = 45.3.0
Floor 16 ½ square at £3 = 49.10.0
Flagging ground floor, doors, windows, plastering, painting, sundries say = 50.0.0
Shafting = 50.0.0
299.13.0
a £300 job at least – power letting in the country at £18 per frame – I could not get more £10 or less= per frame the tenant having to find coal and fireman – I could not get a good permanent who would pay more than £10 a year – not worth my while –
Gave up the mill scheme – talked of Mr. Moores’ new mill to be built at Godley – 400 yards at 10/. bought of Mr. Carr – 12 horse power engine – Mr. Moore might buy my engine if 8 horse power would suit him – at this time came Mr. Barber junior to ask A-‘s leave and mine to shoot this year at last – yes! certainly – then at the moment confounding him in my mind with Mr. Moore alluded to the mill – this led to talk about mills and engines – Everbody building mills – there will be plenty of power to let by and by – said I should be glad to sell my water wheel, and steam engine too if I had not less pother about it – It was about 6pm. before Holt came – had the coal plans and a thorough talk over about the colliery and burst up of water – H- said it was impossible that the water should be the dead water – as positive about it as he was at first, about the water at the water wheel EP. (water pit) – but could give no reason for his opinion – all he could say was, it was impossible – consulted him about the coal to be got under level – how far would he have the water level driven – why not up to the upper brea boundary? – he would not do this on any account – for fear of loosing upper brea and Stocks and for fear of the dead water – the old work water from my uncle Josephs’ level begun in the upper bed at Mitham and the level spent by getting into the middle band stone [about] at Tilley holme stile – (it was this water, as we found on measuring its decease at the mitham engine pit, that beset us at the water wheel E.P.) – he would not cross the Leeds and Whitehall lower brea road on any account – and thought of getting the coal on the other side of the road up at Lower brea Daisy bank pit! – what said I and set up new gin and a new concern, and with the turnpike staring you in the face – oh! he had forgot the turnpike – if we do not go too near upper brea boundary and steal so as to leave them on the hollow, we can do no harm they being on the dib side – and will not the old works water be as bad for Lower brea pit as for any other? – H- got confused – he made it out, that Stocks and Wilson were bound to cut thro’ the throw that runs from Quarry house down to somewhere near Belvidere and then they must of necessity ease me of water – the fact is, I can never make much of Holt – I said he was not to have the farm unless he took the colliery – and that he was to plan and measure for us but that DB. would send for him when he was wanted – B. and he staid till 7 50/.. dinner at 8 – A- and I out at 8 ¾ for ¾ hour – walked in the Lodge road up and down – coffee on coming in at 9 ½ and came upstairs at 10 ¼ at which hour F60° inside and 58° outside – soft (mild) damp partly rainy morning fair in the afternoon and finish evening -

The story behined my drag name
So about 6 months ago I decided I wanted to start drag. Although what's a Drag Royal with out there name??? At first I thought it should be puny like Farah Moan and i came up with Max Uline. While that's a great name I wanted to incorporate the ones who came before us. So Tilley Jo Wesner emerged. From Vesta Tilley and Ella Wesner. Kings from the Victorian era. The middle name Jo is based off of Lady GaGas drag persona.

For the first time, the jeweler from Lithuania became the winner of one of the most recognized international competitions for the creation of jewelery with diamonds - HRD Awards 2009. The theme of the competition this year is "Once, a long time ago ... my favorite fairy tale." Designers had to interpret the chosen fairy tale and create an ornament that would best reveal the fascinating beauty of diamonds.
The winner of the competition was Isabelle Geeroms from Belgium with a ring made of ceramics and white gold "Mirror in my hand ...". The inspiration was the tale "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". The product used 114 diamonds with a total weight of 10.28 carats, courtesy of Luc Vets Diamant.
Finalist Thitiwan Thubtimthong from Thailand created a decoration "Beyond the Fancy", which is a necklace with many small items formed with the help of a unique technology from a 30-meter necklace. To create this adornment, 595 diamonds, 38 diamonds of champagne color, two pink diamonds and one 9,11 carat diamond were required. “What you see is what you get!”
That was the catch phrase of Flip Wilson’s Geraldine, one of America’s favorite drag characters, and it perfectly embodies drag as an art form. Geraldine both did and did not exist, she was Wilson and she was not.
In the Dorset Theatre Festival’s production of The Legend of Georgia McBride, Matthew Lopez’ new comedy about a young straight man whose discovery that he is a drag queen literally saves his marriage, what you see – a spectacular ninety minutes of very moving comedy brilliantly performed and directed – is exactly what you get.
The minute you enter the theatre in Dorset you are greeted by an air of excitement. Strings of colored lights swoop across the ceiling down toward the stage (just the start of Zach Blane’s dazzling lighting design.) A sign upstage welcomes you to Cleo’s in Panama Beach, Florida and songs like “One Night in Margaritaville” and “Tequila Sunrise” set the scene for the tacky booze-fest that occurs in such clubs. The opening minutes of the show introduce the central character, Casey (Joey Taranto), doing a mediocre Elvis impression on Cleo’s stage. The fact that he can’t earn enough to pay the rent from this gig is immediately obvious. His wife Jo (Vasthy Mompoint) is exasperated with his lack of responsibility and his oblivious optimism, and reality socks them both in the gut when, a few minutes later, a home pregnancy test reveals that they are expecting.
Cleo’s owner, Eddie (Denny Dale Bess), is as desperate as Casey for the club to turn a profit, and so he calls on his cousin Bobby to bring in his drag act. Bobby arrives in his drag persona, Miss Tracy Mills (David Turner), with her partner, the erratic and seldom sober Miss Anorexia Nervosa aka Rexy (Jon Norman Schneider), and Casey is demoted to bartender. Until one night when Rexy has one too many and passes out…and a new drag star is born.
Casey’s transformation into Miss Georgia McBride occupies the center slice of the show and offers a fascinating glimpse into what it takes to develop a new identity physically and psychologically. I say a glimpse because Casey’s transitions in and out of drag are lightning fast. When I read the script I was terrified that Lopez had written a play that would literally be impossible to stage because he had not built in enough time for the costume changes, but director Stephen Brackett has choreographed them to the last second, and thanks to Bobby Frederick Tilley’s flexible (and stunning!) costumes, a drag-savvy cast (shout out to Judy Bowman Casting), and expert dressers, they all go off without a hitch. The dressers to appear on stage occasionally, briefly, and inconspicuously and it seems perfectly normal that Tracy and Georgia would have assistance with their changes.
“Drag ain’t a hobby, baby. Drag ain’t a night job. Drag is a protest. Drag is a raised fist inside a sequined glove. Drag is a lot of things, baby, but drag is not for sissies.”
– Matthew Lopez
Still, Taranto’s first appearance as the fully formed Georgia is gasp-inducing. She is gorgeous! (There are no production photos of his full transformation so you will just have to go and see for yourself.) And Taranto is unrecognizable, even though you watch him remove her and turn back into him right before your eyes, they remain two distinct people. Taranto performed in drag on Broadway in the original cast of Kinky Boots, so he is completely comfortable sprinting around in towering stilettos that would break my ankles in a second.

Equally gasp-inducing is the brief scene in which Tracy appears as Bobby. This huge presence is suddenly this small, quiet man. (Again, no production photos of that moment but Turner can be seen out of drag in the rehearsal cast photo.) While Casey is billed as the lead role, as far as I was concerned Turner’s Tracy was the star of the show and it’s heart. He handles the majority of the lip synch numbers (kudos to Ryan Rumery for the excellent sound design) and an astonishing number of costume changes.
As I watched Turner perform his first big number – “Hey Big Spender” from Sweet Charity vividly choreographed by Patrick McCullom – I realized that I have only been exposed to nice safe sanitized G-rated drag, and that watching what was definitely merely PG-13 was quite shocking to me. I have definitely got to expand my horizons and go see a real drag show. Which way to Cleo’s?
Bess is ideal as the sleazy middle-aged club boss with the heart of gold, and Mompoint is warm and relatable as Jo. For a variety of reasons Casey finds it impossible to say to Jo that he is performing drag, and she finds out by accident on a chance visit to the club when she is six months pregnant. Her struggle to come to grips with her husband’s duplicity and his new identity as Georgia is slightly truncated, but ultimately winning. The one thing that makes me sad as a cisgender straight woman like Jo is how marginalized we are in the drag world. Women do drag too, adopting both male personae – three cheers for Melissa McCarthy! – and drag queen identities – Madonna and Cher are excellent examples. I was glad Brackett gave Mompoint a dance solo in a snazzy outfit in the final number because drag is also a celebration of the universal feminine.
Schneider is equally impressive both in drag as Rexy (I seriously covet those hot pink fishnets with the barber pole swirls and the poison green patent leather heels!) and in a dual role as a straight dude named Jason, who is Casey and Jo’s beleaguered landlord. Lopez has given both characters some of the most important lines in the show – Rexy’s ferocious defense of his identity as a drag queen, and Jason’s confession that, before his marriage, he was deeply in love with a trans woman.
I can’t think of a production where the vital importance of each and every member of the company is so apparent. While standing ovations are nauseatingly ubiquitous these days, when the audience I attended with leapt to their feet at the curtain call the impetus was genuine and the accolade well-earned. I would have been delighted to keep cheering if the set , costume, lighting and sound designers had bounded out on stage, along with the director and the choreographer and the stage manager and the dressers and…and…and… Talk about your well-oiled machine! This production is firing on all cylinders.
I attended a matinee, performances generally patronized by older theatre goers, and as I walked out I heard many interesting snippets of conversation in which people unused to discussing drag and gender identity and such struggled to find the words to describe their thoughts while maintaining their own facades of genteel propriety. This is good. These are things we need to think and talk about more. We need to recognize the common humanity underneath whatever persona we are wearing today.
What you see may be what you get only because that’s what you’re expecting. What you see is usually only the tip of the iceberg.
