Let's talk about Shoma...NHK edition...
Two 2nd places and Shoma is in the GPF. He had a much better free skate than at CoC. So it should be something to be happy about. But clearly I am not.
If you have seen my post from CoC you know that I am not upset about Shoma getting 2nd, I am upset about the way he got 2nd. Fight me on this but in any other tech panel of the season he would have a 195+ score for his skate, if not even 200. (And if you looked at the tech box it was 106 TES and that would have given him a 198 score even with those PCS) I don't want to speculate about any political games or anything, for now I simply want to believe Shoma was simply disliked by the tech panel ppl.
(And btw I like Yuma a lot and I am happy he is back! Iif one is winning over Shoma, I am happy if it's Yuma just not like this and this isn't Yuma's fault ofc, so nothing against Yuma.)
What's most sad about Shoma's silver today is that it made him question competing and his abilties. 😭😭😭
He felt good about his performance and then tech panel completely deflated all positive feelings. His comments are so defeated. Ofc he is Shoma so his reaction is still polite and everything and he smiled at Yuma and interacted like normal. But still this is a new low. He perfomed good, he did all combos, landed the 4F and Axels that he was insecure about in the practice, even yoloed a 4T which alone shows his superiority bc who else can do that??? And yet it wasn't enough for the fcking judges to give him high scores.
We all knew Shoma wasn't gonna skate forever and I always knew that it could very well be his last season, but his comments didn't sound so final, so I thought there was maybe a tiny bit hope he'd still continue. But today I am not even sure he will not retire after Nats. I have my doubt he would neglect the opportunity if he's selected for Worlds but if you'd ask him today he probably won't go. Pulling a Tatsuki Machida never seemed more real...and part of me wouldn't even mind. I would lie if I say I won't be sad about Shoma's retirement, but all I really want is him happy and if competing isn't making him happy anymore...better retire on own terms than the Jfed and ISU waving you goodbye by lowballing you...
I hope though that while his comments now are negative, that he will rethink the attitude bc it's not him who has reached a limit or who isn't capable of better scores, it's a fcking judging mishap. Keiji said his 4Loop was brilliant and rotation clean, Shoma himself said he was surprised about the 4Lo and 4T being called (as he could see his landing), Stephane shook his head at the score, no it's not your fault Shoma. And I hope he gets the prep talks of his life by his surroundings!
There are two ways this could lead to, Shoma being on the verve of retiring and motivation for competition is completely lost or Shoma is fired up and rebounds stronger than ever from this disappointment with new fire. As Shoma fans we have seen many ups and downs of Shoma and usually Shoma always came back stronger. Ppl saying that's the end for him after IdF 2019 -he went on to win JNats, ppl saying he is done at WTT 2021 proceeds to win an Olympic medal and World Gold 2022, let's see what happens now...atm a positive way seems impossible but after a few days the world may not seem as dark...
I am truly furious for his 2nd place and petty me who thought I could stand seeing Shoma in 2nd is now completely on skating gods pls let Shoma win all Gold medals from now on as perfect revenge arc 🔥🔥🔥

Is there anyway to watch Shoma's DOMO from JNATS 2020? 2019 is on YT (and is perfect) but I've never seen 2020 one
It's quite hard to find indeed, but I have a link for you! Enjoy! It has the most adorable happy hops at the end and a step sequence full of smiles 💗
...and of course also a yolo 4T, in the true Shoma fashion 😂

It would be an option to send them to 4CC, but usually JSF decides the Worlds team right at Japanese Nationals. I have never seen them switch skaters later unless they are injured.
I don't think Yuna Aoki is in contention for the spot at all bc she wasn't at the GP series...if we go by age eligibility and JNats place it would be Mone Chiba - who I completely forgot btw (but just like with Tomoe Kawabata in 2019 I don't think they select someone performing in juniors for senior Worlds)
Results for Japanese Nationals 2022 Women

I really wonder who they select for the 3rd Worlds spot?
Mai and Kaori should be a given looking how incredible Mai presented herself this season and Kaori for her performances at Nationals and also result wise her GP was fair enough.
If you look at those who competed at the GP series and their results today...I wonder what the main selection criteria is now that none of them placed on the podium?
Mana Kawabe 9th ( 🥉 and 6th place GP series, possibly a 3A)
Rika Kihira 11th (4th and 5th place GP series)
Rinka Watanabe 12th (🥇 and 5th in the GP series, GPF 4th place)
Rino Matsuike 13th (7th, she is struggling with illness so I don't think she is in contention)
Rion Sumiyoshi 14th (2x 🥉 medals at the GP, has a 4T even if not as stable)
Then age eligible would also be Hana Yoshida who placed 5th at Nationals and qualified for the JGPF where she placed 6th. But she wasn't doing as good in the final...and has no senior experience...
I wouldn't want to select that...my personal preference would be Rika Kihira, but she still hasn't gone back to her full content...but scoring wise she definitely would have the highest possibility for an upgrade if she recovers more.

On a Shoma rewatch adventure today...
I kept hanging at the 2018-2019 years with rewatching Worlds 2019, Olympics 2018, NHK and Skate Canada 2018...2019 CoR, 2019 IdF Gala (gala is the only rewatchable part 😅) and JNats 2019
So let's get back to memories...
I actually started rewatching because I found a video file of 2019 Worlds in Saitama and got heartbroken again seeing Shoma struggle through his FS and the disappointment was so big. I decided then, that I needed happier places and rewatched Olympics 2018, which still has my alltime fav podium.
Olympics 2018 FS - I still have so many happy memories from back when.
youtube
Skate Canada 2018 FS (with a head over heels German commentary by Sigi Heinrich - video has English subs) - I forgot what a gorgeous 4S Shoma landed there and how good the FS was until the last two jumping passes
youtube
NHK Gala 2018 - in the light of the return of Great Spirit at the Nagoya Festival 2023 here is the original gala version from 2018 with the painted face by Deniss Vasiljews (German commentary with English subs)
youtube
My own fancam of the IdF 2019 gala, which was like a restart for Shoma's career. The event itself was pure heartbreak and I remember how I cried and cried and couldn't stop it. But Shoma performed in the gala like a burden was lifted off him and I love the memories. (ignore my screaming 😂😅)
youtube
Cup of Russia 2019 FS practice - The FS itself was chaotic but this was the fresh start of Shoma's career and I love the perfection of this practice so pure, just great.
youtube
And finally Japanese Nationals 2019 SP with probably the best competitive Great Spirit there ever was. The moment Shoma found back his spirit and joy.
youtube
2018-2019 were probably the hardest years for Shoma in his career and a lot has happened since then. I still think all the struggle was needed or we wouldn't have the Shoma we have now. The experiences made him strong, enjoy skating again and most importantly made him realize that we as his fans support him beyond medals and titles. I love him for his honesty, his amazing skating and the joy he gives me when I see him skate. Thank you Shoma! ❤️
