"What sport is this again?" Simon asked you with a shit-eating grin painted on his face. You slapped his thigh lightly as you adjusted your gaze to find your daughter waiting patiently on the mat. "Jiu-jitsu, Simon," you whispered, "been doing this since reception." You didn't see his reaction but you knew he had a proud fatherlike smile. Despite always asking you these inconsequential questions, he secretly was thoroughly involved in his daughter's life. You tapped your fingers anxiously as you watched the different age groups compete across the dark blue mats. Your daughter sat alone, watching their every move, and stretching her little legs out. "She's definitely your little girl," you whispered to Simon as he put a comforting arm around you.
"Next we have Isla Riley," the announcer called and yours and Simon's cheers drowned out the announcement of her competitor. "Go Isles!" you shouted, ignoring the glares from the surrounding parents. Despite only being six, she sarcastically shook her head before taking her stance. She adjusted her gray and black striped belt as she looked angrily at the other girl in front of her. As soon as the announcer commenced the match, your daughter ran towards the girl, grappling for her legs. You could feel your hands tighten around Simon's as you watched her overpower her and pin the girl to the mat. "She's actually pretty good," Simon beamed as the match continued. Your daughter was then put on her back by the much taller girl and you could feel yourself reacting to their action. "Oh fuck," you said, a little louder than acceptable, and you looked away from the turned heads. Just when you thought your daughter was going to lose the match, your daughter wrapped her legs around the girl's neck and threw her off of her.
"That's my girl," Simon whispered and you could see him smile widely, a rare sight in the Riley household. You were counting the various points your daughter was continuously awarded and it was clear she was in the advantage after her last move. The round continued as your daughter scored for her knee-on-belly, mounting, and passing the guard moves. You could feel yourself clapping when she accomplished the highest-scoring move, the rear mount, and pinned the girl in between her legs and arms. Her heels wrapped around her torso and the girl struggled in her grasp. "I helped her practice that one," you smiled to Simon and you could hear him laugh to himself. As soon as the match started, the 5 minutes were up and the announcer named your daughter the winner with a score of 36. "Let's go Isles!" you shouted and Simon joined with a loud clap that reverberated across the gym walls.
Once she shook her opponent's hand, she ran over to you with her hair in knots and breathing heavily. Simon lifted her up into his arms and placed a soft kiss on her temple. "Happy to be home to see you, baby," he whispered to her as he smoothed out her wild hair. "Did you see I did a take the back?" she excitedly cooed, "I could hear you cheering for me, Mum." You hugged your little family in a warm hug as you celebrated her recent accomplishments. "Want to get out of here?" Simon asked and Isla giddily nodded in response. As you walked out of the gym after a few words with her coach, she held her dad's hand proudly and listed off various sweet shops she wanted to visit. You stood behind them and in a secretive moment, you took a picture of them hand-in-hand. "Glad to have you home, Simon," you whispered before your daughter turned to you and beckoned for you to hurry up. "We're not all athletes here," you joked as you sprinted to walk with your loving daughter and husband.

"That's fucking disrespectful," Neil says.
The guy blinks, then crosses his arms across his chest. "What is?"
Neil steps down a few more stairs to show he's not intimidated by this poser. "Getting Kevin Day's tattoo. He didn't get it to look tough."
"I am Kevin Day."
Sure, he looks a little like Kevin Day. He has the eyes, and the jawline, and the wrist brace, but he can't be Kevin Day. He can't be the man whose tournament footage Neil has tracked down over the course of years and scrupulously watched until he memorized every single move. "Oh yeah? And what's Kevin Day doing in a shithole like this?"
"Training," says Kevin Day.

Try outs
Sandra speaks, "Tell us about yourself..."
"I like competing. I have to admit I like to win. Not team things, people can let you down. One on one, it's just me."
"Why this?"
"I was always wrestling with my brothers as a kid, but the wrestling team was a dare. And then, the first time I got them, my opponent, that look of desperation on her face just before the pinfall was called. I was hooked. I got good and stayed with it through school. After school finding clubs was harder, so I wound up taking up Jiu Jitsu classes instead. Again, when you catch them, that buzz when they get so desperate and then tap or, even better, go to sleep."
"But you lift too, yeah?"
"I was lean and had long hair and go noticed. I'm big into comics and I tried cosplay, and that hooked too. Modelling, cosplay... The breast surgery was a few years ago and that all helped. Never liked being skinny, wound up fitness modelling. Was never going to do runway."
"Why here?"
"A lot of competitors here, and I've heard you pay for video work?"
Sandra makes a note, her guest has asked so now it's ok to discuss. While Sandra is making notes, Lilith pipes in next.
"Live shows?"
"Well I've competed live in heaps of tournaments, and I've walked the stage live in heaps of swimsuit and cosplay contests. I'm kind of excited about doing a show."
While Lilith is making her note, Sandra pipes in again.
"Boxing or kick-boxing?"
"I'm ok throwing a punch or kick in a wrestling match, but straight up boxing... My technique isn't that good. Was never so much interesting to me. I'll throw hands if I have to, but a skilled striker would take me out pretty easy."
Sandra and Lilith at the same time, "Topless?", then slightly embarrassed looking at each other.
A chuckle, "Yeah, I'm down with that. Oil wrestling too. I've seen your catalogues and I've gotten reports on a couple of live shows from a friend."
"Friend?"
"Boyfriend. I was out of town. Disappointed he didn't take me. He made it up later though. I'm better on the mats than he is."
Lilith speaks again now, "Ok if we ask for a tryout? Just a test match up, to see how you move, how you fall, and some of what you can do."
"Of course. How about pro-style?"
Sandra and Lilith are both suitably impressed with their new tryouts look. The tryout is impressed with Kyong.
"She's hot...." The directly to Kyong, "I bet you've even hotter when it hurts."
Sandra clears her throat, "This is a tryout. Save that attitude for interview and promo work." All the same, Sandra is already thinking this one can generate heat. Can she generate pop in the ring?
Pretenses dropped, fist bump and the collar and elbow.
She can definitely move. She can definitely take a bump. She can definitely pop. And when she catches Kyong? Sandra and Lilith both agree. This is hot...

You know what’s annoying? The fact that people are right about exercise. For years and years I told myself that I wasn’t an athlete. I’d tried more sports than I could count on my fingers and I was bad or disliked all of them. I’m slow so track didn’t work. Ice skating was fun but everyone started so much younger than I did and I felt like I would never catch up. My hand eye coordination and reaction time are actually terrible so tennis was a disaster. The list goes on.
Eventually I convinced myself that sports just weren’t for me. Everyone told me that being active in some way or another would improve my mood and help me get better sleep. I knew from experience that sports and being active would do nothing but make me (more) miserable. I relegated myself to the position of the eternal nerd. I didn’t need *sports* to live a fulfilled life or to feel good in my body.
Cut to a year and a half ago. I had some childhood experience with martial arts (I stopped in middle school because it wasn’t feminine enough or something like that) and decided after some of the quarantine restrictions lifted that I wanted to try again. the place I trained when I was younger went under during the height of covid and that sport was pretty rare so there was nowhere else to train. I chose a martial art I’d heard about at random - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - and tried it.
I’d like to say that I was a prodigy, that I understood the sport instinctually, that I was praised by my coaches for my natural talent. That, unfortunately, would be a lie. I was downright terrible when I started. Everything was so difficult. Other people understood the principles and applications in a way that I couldn’t. It seemed like everyone was either way more advanced than me or twice my size. The first few months, I was learning techniques and training but I still didn’t get it. My coach told me that the instinct would come with time. I was worried that this would just be another piece of proof that I’m not athletic, that I don’t have the body or mental fortitude. I was scared of failing, but I loved the sport. Since then, I’ve massively improved. Some things that I struggled with before have fallen into place and I’ve found new things to struggle with. I’m competent for my level and I even competed in a tournament. Has it been easy? No. Do I always feel confident in my ability? Absolutely not. But BJJ has undeniably changed my life for the better. I feel more comfortable in my body, I’ve gotten stronger and more resilient, found a new community, and yes it totally has helped with my sleep schedule and emotional wellbeing.
While I love BJJ I am not promising that you will too (although it is amazing for self defense, a skill everyone benefits from but is extra useful to women and femme presenting folks in our current society). What I’m trying to say is that despite my years of disbelief it turns out that everyone was in fact correct about physical activity/sports being good for you. It also turns out that I was wrong about my belief that I was inherently un-athletic. I also want to say that you can do this on your terms. There are so many more ways to move your body than just hitting a ball with a stick or running in circles. Don’t let yourself stay trapped in a cage with fictional bars; in an 80’s movie trope where you can only be a jock or a nerd; in a mindset that limits you from being happy and healthy. Find something that makes you excited to do because I promise, it is out there.

Way to cheat, bro!"
By Bryndís Blackadder October 23, 2023
A trans-identified male high school student has won the Fastest Sophomore Girl award at a race meet in Belfast, Maine this past weekend. Soren Stark-Chessa previously floundered while running in the male category, and only began participating as a “female” student this year.
In 2022, while representing Coast Waldorf High School in Freeport, Stark-Chessa came in 25th place at the Maine XC Festival of Champions where he ran as a freshman boy, and 14th place at the Southern Maine Class C Regional XC Championship in the Division C Boys 5000 Meter Run Finals.
But since transitioning to “female” sometime within the last year, Stark-Chessa had begun to dominate the female categories, rapidly improving his standing in record time.
On September 30, Stark-Chessa took 5th place at the Festival of Champions in the female category, with a time that would have ranked him 162nd if he had raced in the male category. One week later, on October 5, Stark-Chessa took first place at the Cape Elizabeth High School 2023 cross country race, besting the fastest female runner by nearly 2 minutes.
On October 21, Stark-Chessa seized the title of “Fastest Sophomore Girl” at a regional high school cross country championship, completing the 3.1 mile course over 80 seconds faster than his female competitors.
Stark-Chessa, who was previously ranked 172nd in the Freshman Boys category, is set to compete in the female category again on October 28.
In late September, his participation as a “female” runner began to receive backlash after footage of one of the races he ran in began to circulate on social media. In one video, shared by Shawn McBreairty, spectators could be heard shouting “way to cheat, bro!” as Stark-Chessa ran past them.

Female martial artists have come forward to reveal that male athletes claiming to be transgender have completely overtaken the women’s categories of a major grappling association, leaving them fearing for their safety in many instances. One of the men, Corissa Griffith, took home four gold medals in the women’s category during a tournament in Georgia on October 21.
The North American Grappling Association (NAGA) is the largest submission grappling association in the world, and facilitates standards and tournaments in various martial arts, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. But while NAGA has provided competition categories for males and females since its inception in 1995, it has recently become the subject of controversy after a number of female athletes were found to have been matched up against trans-identified males.
The issue first received widespread attention in September after it was learned that a female Brazilian jiu-jitsu athlete had not been informed she would be competing against a male. Taelor Moore posted a clip of her fight against James “Alice” McPike on her Instagram, noting that there was a 65lbs weight difference between them.

UFC: Sudden Impact is a mixed martial arts game released for the PlayStation 2 in 2004, developed by Opus and published by Global Star Software. It falls under the category of fighting games, but unlike your typical arcade brawler, it focuses on recreating the sport of mixed martial arts as seen in the UFC. The game features a roster of real-life UFC fighters, each with their own unique combat styles, such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Wrestling, and Kickboxing, allowing for a wide variety of fighting strategies.
One thing I like about Sudden Impact is its blend of striking, grappling, and submission techniques. It tries to mimic the dynamic nature of MMA by allowing players to mix things up during a fight—whether it's throwing punches and kicks or taking the fight to the ground for a submission attempt. It offers a variety of modes, including an arcade-style mode where you fight your way to the championship and a story mode that is probably the most interesting part of the game.
In story mode, you create your own fighter and train him, progressing through the ranks of the UFC, unlocking new moves, and customizing his fighting style as you go. I found this mode to be engaging because it adds some depth to the typical fight-after-fight formula, making you feel invested in your character's development.
In terms of presentation, the visuals are decent for a 2004 PS2 game, though not groundbreaking. The fighters look recognizable enough, and the animations are functional, though a bit stiff at times. What stands out more is the range of moves and how it captures the chaotic feel of an MMA match, with fighters able to transition between different phases of combat—striking, clinching, and grappling—pretty smoothly. However, the AI can sometimes feel a bit unbalanced; some matches feel too easy, while others ramp up the difficulty unexpectedly.
For fans of the sport, UFC: Sudden Impact offers an authentic experience, though it has its flaws. The controls can feel a bit clunky, especially when trying to execute more complex moves or submissions. Honestly, I would have preferred the rounds to last in real time, rather than the accelerated timer where one second feels like five. This creates a sense of urgency that isn’t necessary, as MMA is often about strategy and patience, not rushing. Still, it’s a solid attempt at bringing MMA to a gaming platform, especially considering the hardware limitations of the time.
To sum it up, if you want a UFC experience on the PS2 that balances action with some customization and depth, Sudden Impact delivers on that front. However, if you're after a more refined game with smoother gameplay and challenging AI, you might find it lacking in those areas.
PS: In this video, I’m working my way up to the gold in Tournament Mode as Andrei 'The Pitbull' Arlovski, one of my all-time favorites alongside Mark Coleman and Bas Rutten.

I won my bracket at the Trans + Queer Tournament at Ballard Jiu Jitsu this weekend!! I choked em with my legs and won a gold medal!!!
I've only been training for four months, but I couldnt pass up an opportunity to compete in a tournament FOR queer people, especially when the IBJJF is out there codifying transphobic rules. This was such a cool event with so many amazing queer people coming together to fight and celebrate each other!! 💪🏳️‍⚧️🥇

GhostFlower Street Fighter Au
So I had this small idea in my head for quite some time and wanted to share some details on it.
Miles learned Ansatsuken/Shorin-Ryu by Ryu in Japan at age 14.
Gwen learned Judo/Ballet in Paris by Manon at age 10.
Both competed in the Teens Fighting Tournament in New York Miles being 15, Gwen being 16.
Both made it to the Grand Finals where their will face each other.
This is where their rivalry starts.
Gwen won the Grand Finals by using the Tomoe Nage on Miles.
After the Tournament Peter met Miles and wanted to train him on being quick and complex instead of being patience as Judo won’t give you the time of day.
One year has pass and Miles & Gwen transfer to Brooklyn Visions Academy, Gwen bumps into Miles asking him if he wants to join her team in the Tag Tournament.
Miles agrees on one request after they win the Tag Tournament he wants a rematch with her.
Gwen agrees teasing Miles if he wants to be put on his back that badly again she’ll be happy to Oblige.
Miles joins and now team consists of Miles, Gwen, Pavitr, and Hobie.
Also here are the characters Fighting Styles and their Themes (Street Fighter Alpha Edition)
