I came up with my Top 25 Christmas songs. Meaning, these are my 25 favorite Christmas songs. It's subjective to me, so don't get mad if your song isn't on the list, create your own damn list. I limited it to my personal favorite from each performing artist, so there isn't any group that appears more than once. I also tried to make the songs all different tunes, but I'm not 100% sure if I accomplished that. I'm going to post 25-11 today, and then slow roll the top 10 each day until Christmas.  25. Jack Johnson "Someday at Christmas (Alternate Version)" This is exactly what you would expect a Jack Johnson Christmas song to sound like. Syncopated playful guitar riffs with a strong bass and drum foundation. It sounds great once a year like every Jack Johnson song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9hHUkQzaiE 24. Ringo Starr "Come On Christmas, Christmas Come On" This is from Ringo's underrated late 90's Christmas album. It sounds like something you would find on a T. Rex album. Plus, it's Ringo. What's not to like? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQq0Wy7VKxk 23. Boris Gardner "The Meaning of Christmas" This is a reggae number but it's a cute song. I'm sure it will enrage people who are devout Christians, but what did you expect from a reggae song? Boris is nearly unknown outside of Jamaica, but is worthy of your attention. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GE_EaoKCTM 22. Julian Casablancas "I Wish It Was Christmas Today" Again, this is exactly how you would expect a Christmas song from The Strokes to sound like. A refined nugget of ear candy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wS-k66MKgs 21. MxPx "Coming Home for Christmas" Probably the best late 90's-early 2000's pop punk Christmas song in existence. Starts how you would expect but has a great Christmassy outro to bring it home. Surprisingly nostalgic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQvneV0xFPM 20. Nate Dogg "Be Thankful" Nate was talented, that's a fact. Most of the time he was singing about weed, regulating or being generally misogynistic. It's refreshing to hear him not sing about the usual things. Plus, it's actually a respectable Christmas original. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSejZV5llck 19. Jimmy Castor Bunch "Merry Christmas" I absolutely love the groove and vibe to this. It's a product of its time, the 1970s. You can't mistake that. But it's a great listen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOlKTk3FXqQ 18. Carla Thomas "All I Want For Christmas Is You" This is not the Mariah Carey song. Spoilers - that song and artist is not on this list. But this is a great Christmas song with a Wall of Sound motif. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QATvC2oiNY 17. Ray Charles "That Spirit of Christmas" This really stimulates the nostalgia part of your brain. Famously used in Christmas Vacation when Clark was stuck in the attic. A Christmas classic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3z91z2kjAo 16. Men of Worth "Christmas in the Trenches" This duo supplements their income by providing guided tours to Ireland. They did a great job on this song which is about the fabled Christmas 1914 on the front lines of the Great War where the guns stopped and both sides hung out in No Man's Land. Apparently this happened more than just that day as the grind of war really set in. But it's a powerful story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dUHxHiDbUQ 15. Squirrel Nut Zippers "Gift of the Magi" Based on the famous story by O. Henry, this is just a fabulous listen, very folksy and uniquely American. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJrcr-lMbXg 14. "Welcome Christmas (Reprise)" The climax of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, it features nonsense words that somehow have meaning but I can't explain the meaning for sure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIFFcRFPi4M 13. Elton John "Ho! Ho! Ho! (Who'd Be A Turkey At Christmas?)" This is the B-side to his smash Christmas hit "Step Into Christmas" but it's often overlooked. You shouldn't sleep on it though. It's basically the Christmas "Bennie and the Jets" and it has that same feel to it. Just an absolute blast to listen to. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ac97CJQhx5E 12. Smashing Pumpkins "Christmastime" Billy's ode to Christmas always has a soft spot in my Christmas playlist. Recorded during the Adore era, it displays how Billy could create any type of song he wanted with ease back then. This is about the midpoint of his arc of doing no wrong. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmFeg2e5GzI 11. Paul McCartney "Wonderful Christmastime" Love it or hate it, there is no one on Earth who thinks this is just OK. I fall squarely in the love it column. I love clunky old synthesizers though. Regardless of the backing track, this has some great Paul melodies if you can focus on the vocals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94Ye-3C1FC8

Songs in the Key of Troglodyte
youtube
Troglodyte by The Jimmy Castor Bunch, 1972
Early 70s pop funk with freeform rambling and early 70s memes. It reached #4 on the R&B charts and #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Not my kind of weird.
youtube
Troglodyten by Stereo Total, 2005
Early 2000s German language that compares underground dance music to cavemen, favorably. Stereo Total were a favorite band of mine, although sometimes they were also not my kind of weird. (I do like this one.)
youtube
Troglodyte by Viagra Boys, 2022
Echoes of Devo, in sound and lyrical content, but modern. Husband likes this one a lot (hat tip to @iamnotlanuk for introducing me to this)

He’s been at it a long time, with many awards and kudos to his name, but his music speaks louder than all of that—truly a man on a mission from God. His records have been in my life for many years, presenting me with intelligent spirituality and lyrical beauty that connects with the natural and the urban. Here’s a recent interview with Bruce to sum up his latest recording https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-nCfOUp6cU ...Meanwhile, HB BC—thank you for your volumes of music and service.

George Clemons grew up in Virginia (Southern USA). During the 60's he moved up to New York and started singing in clubs in Harlem. In 1965 he performed several times at the legendary Apollo Theatre with Don Covay. George sang background vocals on the Don Covay single "Have Mercy". After leaving Don Covay and the Good-Timers, George started his solo career as King George. He recorded "Drive on James" with part of the Ray Charles Band including Bernard "Pretty" Purdie on drums. About this time George was going around jamming in small clubs (Smalls Paradise, Harlem etc.) with among others the King Curtis Band The Kingpins. On one of those occations, George met Jimi Hendrix. At the time Jimi had left the Isley Brothers and Little Richard. Jimi was playing on and off with King Curtis and Curtis Knight during that period. Jimi and George hung out quite a bit. Together they saw the Mc Coys; George once jammed with Jimi, together with drummer Jimmi Castor (later of Castor Bunch "fame"; George was also present when the Rolling Stones came to see Jimi perform in New York City on 2 July 1966 after the Stones concert at Forest Hills Stadium. Scandinavian agents heard King George and offered him a contract to come to Europe to sing with an all-black soul band, called the Harlem Kiddies. They arrived in Stockholm in 1966 for three months but ended up touring around two years instead. At that time Chas Chandler brought Jimi to England. George was proud of the fact that he did have a contract, while Jimi didn't. Later, of course, it turned out that Jimi did a lot better than him. Jimi and George ran into each other in Scandinavia, where the Harlem Kiddies warmed up for Jimi Hendrix. George met Jimi again when the Experience played in Copenhagen (21 May 1967). George had two bands during the period: the Harlem Kiddies (playing R&B) and the King George Discovery (playing more psychedelic stuff). After that, George met Jimi a few times in Sweden. George claims that he wasn't too found of Noel Redding, but liked Mitch Mitchell a lot more. George also knew Buddy Miles from his Wilson Pickett period, and also met Billy Cox. When George asked Billy where he came from Billy answered, "we're a band of Gypsies, we come from everywhere

James Walter Castor (June 23, 1940 – January 16, 2012) was a prominent American funk, R&B, and soul musician, known for his work as a vocalist, saxophonist, and composer. He gained fame with hits like "It's Just Begun," "The Bertha Butt Boogie," and the million-selling "Troglodyte (Cave Man)," making him one of the most sampled artists in music history.🎸🖤❤️🎼🎶
Born in Manhattan, New York, Castor started his career with Jimmy and the Juniors before joining The Teenagers. In the 1970s, as the leader of The Jimmy Castor Bunch (TJCB), he released several successful albums, with "It's Just Begun" becoming a classic, especially in the South Bronx block parties. The group also produced other hits like "Bertha Butt Boogie," "Potential," and "A Groove Will Make You Move." TJCB's lineup included talented musicians like Gerry Thomas and Jeffrey Grimes, contributing to their distinctive sound.

Lecture on Nothing vs. Jimmy Castor Bunch
Lecture on Nothing vs. Jimmy Castor Bunch So I have a CD, from approximately 1999, called Lecture on Nothing. It's a collection of recordings from I assume a single guy, that feature a lot of sampled work. Tonight, I was listening to a local program called "Digging in the Crates" that features a lot of rare tracks, and one track stood out, because I definitely recognized it from Lecture on Nothing, specifically the end of a track. The track is on YouTube here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCiRlnD5FTw). The track played on the show was "Troglodyte" by the Jimmy Castor Bunch, but I can't be sure that's it.Or, if someone recognizes where he got that sample, that would help too.I'm curious if anyone else hears the similarity or I'm just crazy (I did have a hemorrhagic stroke 2 years ago).Edit: so I just did a search on Amazon, and realized there's an industrial group currently out (last album in March) called Lecture on Nothing. Just to clarify: this is absolutely a different group (I hope so, at least). Submitted June 08, 2024 at 11:57PM by DesertWanderlust https://ift.tt/AVZIqMr via /r/Music
