JD had never really noticed how often the women in his company were hit on, even if he and his male colleagues were sitting with them. One particular night when the team had all gone out it’s all he could notice. The way men flirted and played games with the girls, they were far bolder than the females in the bar. The females seemed to be more reserved and less risk taking than the males, like they were assessing if the men were available or not. Not the men though. The men seemed to take it as a challenge. Each one which was shot down took it differently. Some accepted with grace, others met the girls with contempt, which you were all very good at deflecting and not letting them bother you too much.

JD and Deshawn had to admit that they both were having a hard time keeping to themselves when watching the interactions, both of them on edge waiting to step in if any of the men got too handsy or any of you showed that things were getting out of hand.

You’re on the water when JD gets to the beach, your surfboard cresting across the water as you chase the waves. He watches from the shore, his feet sinking into the sand as he shields his eyes from the sun glinting off the ocean. You’re beautiful out there, practically poetry in motion and JD, he just can’t take his eyes off you.

He’s still waiting for you when you eventually set foot back on dry land, your wet hair falling across your features as you carry your board. He can’t tell if you’re happy to see him or not, the two of you haven’t spoken since he discovered you’d handed in your badge.

When the case with your ex was being investigated you’d both been placed on leave due to the nature of your on again/off again relationship. That also meant no contact. After they’d arrested the suspect, JD had returned to work find your desk vacant and your name plate missing.

“She’s gone.” Mackie had told him. “She resigned a couple of days ago.”

He knows it’s because of the videos, the fact everyone who work with now knows how you like to get fucked. Blue still can’t look him in the face without blushing.

He’s tried texting you, calling but you don’t pick up. When he drives past your house the car is never in the driveway, which leaves the only other place he knows you’ll be at six in the morning. The beach where he taught you to surf.

“You’ve been avoiding me.” He says as you stand the board up in the sand and begin to wring the water from your hair.

“I thought a clean break would do us both some good.” You tell him as you shake out the remaining droplets.

“Is that what you want?” He asks you as he picks up your board and begins to carry it to your car. “A clean break?”

The dampness soaks through his shirt but he doesn’t care, all he cares about is your answer because he’s just as in love with you as he’s always been.

“We don’t have the same obstacles we did when we first started.” You tell him as you reach your Jeep and he props the board up against the car before he gives you his entire attention. “You’re not married anymore and I’m not in your chain of command. I can’t help but wonder what would have happened if we’d started it right…”

“We could start it right.” JD says, his fingertips tucking an errant strand of hair back behind your ear. “You could let me take you out and we can figure out who we are without the drama.”

“Alright.” You say, with that pretty smile of yours, the one that lights up his entire world. “Let’s start with breakfast.”

You’re trembling, JD can see it a mile off. You try to hide it by shoving your hands into the pockets of your jacket but you can’t keep secrets, not from him. He’s quiet about drawing you aside, Mackey’s focused on the body and DeShawn’s busy talking to the first officer on scene.

“What is it?” He says as he sits you down in the passenger seat of his truck.

You tilt your head away, looking back towards the corpse and JD cradles your face between his hands directing you attention back to him. There’s such sadness in your eyes, such conflict. His forehead comes to rest upon yours, a gesture of reassurance as his thumbs chased over your cheeks.

“It’s just you and me Naomi,” He whispers, his breath ghosting over your lips. “You know you can tell me anything.”

“It’s Simon.” You say quietly and he doesn’t understand not until you continue. “He’s my ex JD, he came over last night and we…”

It feels like he’s been punched in the gut, the air rushes out of his lungs and for a second he can’t breathe. You aren’t together at the moment, the two of you are more off than on these days. He has no right to feel angry, or hurt, or upset but he does.

Thought of another man’s hands on you makes him want to murder someone and that’s when he remembers shit, someone just did.

Already he sees the turn this investigation is going to take. They’re going to question you, take your phone, dig into your life and they’re going to find out about the two of you. From there you’ll both become suspects. You, the jilted lover and him the jealous ex.

“Fuck.” He says finally as he draws away, his hands coming to rest upon his hips. “We’re going to have to tell them, try and get ahead of it.”

“JD.” You say, rubbing your hands over your face. “There’s photos of the two of us, videos…”

Another gut punch because he knows the ones you’re talking about. Him, fucking you from behind, pulling your hair, telling you how good you take him, how tight you are. Your colleagues are about to get some real insight into the dynamics of the relationship that currently is not a relationship.

This is a nightmare, a genuine fucking nightmare.

“We still have to tell them.” He says finally, shaking his head. “We can’t keep this a secret anymore, we have to be up front about it, own it.”

“You aren’t the one getting choked in one of those videos.” You remind him, your voice completely devoid of emotion.

“No.”  He snaps back. “But I am the one doing the choking, telling you how he fantasises about slipping his hand up your skirt at work or fucking you over his desk.”

That’s the worst one he thinks, balls deep with his hand on your throat, squeezing as he describes exactly what he wants to do to you everytime you dress up for court. This is going to destroy him, it’s going to destroy you.

His gaze comes to rest on you at that moment and he realises how scared you are. It’s different for women, he knows. He’ll get a slap on the back for fucking you and you’ll get branded a whore. The subject of vulgar jokes and humiliating comments. He doesn’t want that for you, he resents that a loving act, something between two consensual adults could potentially fuck up your career.

And then there’s the flipside of it, he’s in the process of a messy divorce, him and Bex are still arguing about custody. When this becomes public knowledge she’ll add this to her arsenal, use it against him. He’ll be lucky if he ever sees Jack again.

The only solace in this whole thing is that you’re not alone, that you have one another to lean on. You can weather this storm, he knows it, he feels it in the depths of his heart. He takes your hands in his, his thumbs lightly caressing your knuckles.

“Whatever happens, we’ll face it together.” He promises you. “I’ve got your back and you’ve got mine.”

You can hear the sincerity in his voice and it wounds you. It’s been over a month since the two of you were last together, since you ended things because he still hasn’t divorced his wife and you still crave him. You spend your nights alone in your sheets, with your favourite toy fantasising about all the ways this man has made you come.

“How much then?” Gregor prompts, taking out his phone and bringing up his banking app. “For the key to her heart? One million? Two? Three?”

JD’s jaw tightens, you can tell he hates the thought of another man’s hands on your, especially this ones but it’s part of the game. To make the arrest he has to sell you, no matter how revolting he finds it.

“Just make the damn sale.” Mackey’s voice sounds through both of your earpieces and you see JD’s flash with indignation.

“Five.” He says finally. “You can own her for five.”

There’s a moment of indecision, you think JD’s overshot his mark but then Gregor asks for his routing number and you watch as the money is transferred into his account.

“Come to me.” Gregor says patting his own lap as he slips his phone back into his pocket.

You raise to your feet despite JD’s grasp tightening on your hand before you slip away from him.

“Oh Gregor.” You whisper as you place your palms on his spread knees and lean in close so you can look into his eyes. “You’re under arrest baby.”

The expression on this asshole’s face makes the past few hours of emotional torture worth the prize. You step out of the way as JD cuffs him, snatching up the suit jacket he’s left hanging on the back of his chair and slipping it on over the mini dress you’re wearing. The scent of his aftershave clings to the collar, flooding your scenes with his masculinity. His eyes flicker up to meet yours as he hands Gregor off to Mackey and you know you’re going home with him tonight, that you're going to spend the night being ruined in his sheets.

“I’ll keep the dress on.” You tell him as you stride past him and he shakes his head, his fingers catching on the sleeve of the suit jacket.

He’d woken up tangled up in you, your bare skin pressed against his and it had started all over again. His desire for you it’s insatiable, he’d taken you in the bed, in the shower and finally in the kitchen on the dining table.

The only reason he leaves is because the both of you get a call out.

It’s later that day his wife turns up at the office. He sees the expression on your face as you lead her to his desk and he knows what you’re going to say the next time you’re alone together. It doesn’t matter that he hasn’t slept in the same bed as Bex for over six months, that he’s been talking about moving out, he still legally belongs to another woman and there’s the wrinkle.

“I won’t be your mistress.” You tell him later when the two of you have a minute alone together.

“I’m not asking you to be.” He says as he sags back in his chair. “My marriage to Bex is on life support, neither one of us has been brave enough to pull the plug until now.”

“JD.” You say firmly, rubbing your palm over the nape of your neck. “I’ve been down this road before, I know how it ends and it’s not happily, at least not for me.”

“Naomi…” He begins but you cut him off with the shake of your head.

“No JD, we’re done.”

Stormy Night: Jim 'JD' Dempsey x Reader

JD doesn’t expect the knock at the door. It’s past midnight and he’s sitting on the couch nursing a beer, listening to the sound of the rain patter against the window. He sets the bottle down before he exhales, it’s been a hell of a day, a hell of a week if he’s honest. When he pulls open the door, he’s surprised to see you standing there. Your hair is plastered to your head, water dripping down your features. You use your hand to push it away from your face before tucking it back into the confines of your waterproof.

You’ve walked here tonight, the two of you only live a couple of streets apart and you’ve been trying to cut down your emissions lately, it’s why you carpool to work.

“Hi.” You murmur, the light from the porch illuminating your features.

“Hi.” he says, holding the door open.

You take as an invitation, slipping past him into the house. He closes the door behind you, watching as your fingers fumble with the mechanism on your coat.

“Here, let me.” He says and you hold your hands up in surrender.

He grips the zipper between his fingers, his eyes on yours as he slowly lowers it. He wants to kiss you, to touch you, to hear that deviant little sound you make when he holds you on the cusp but he doesn’t do any of that. You’d ended it with him a couple of days ago.

Being separated isn’t the same as being divorced, you had told him, you still have one foot in.

You weren’t wrong.

It doesn’t stop him wanting you, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t care. He thinks you must see it in him because your breathing hitches as he helps you out of your jacket. His warm palms guide it down your arms, his fingertips trailing over your bare skin as it lands in a heap on the floor.

“You’ve still got clothes in the bedroom.” He tells you, his fingertips hooking the bottom of your damp shirt. Your jeans are soaked through and your water from your hair is dripping all over the shoulders of your t-shirt.

“Maybe you should help me out of these wet ones.” You say and he smiles at that because this thing between the two of you, it never really ends. You leave, he leaves but always you’re drawn back together.

You’re the reason he left his wife in the first place, the reason he asked for a separation, the reason this morning he’d sat down with her and told her he wanted a divorce. You’ve been doing this dance for over a year now. It started as one night, what seems like a lifetime ago before it became a full-blown affair and now it’s transitioning into more.

“Let’s get you into the bedroom.” He murmurs, his lips brushing over yours. “I’m sure I can think of a few ways to warm you up.”
