Sailfin Dragon
These stunning lizards, native to the Philippines and Indonesia, are famous for their unique sail-like fin that runs along their backs.
They are a part of the genus **Hydrosaurus**, which includes several species, all known for their impressive size and distinctive appearance. Sailfin Dragons thrive in tropical forests and are often found near water sources, as they are excellent swimmers. 🌊✨
Fun fact: They can even run on water to escape predators! This remarkable ability, combined with their striking looks, makes them a fascinating subject for wildlife enthusiasts.
However, their populations are declining due to habitat loss and the pet trade, highlighting the need for conservation efforts.

What do you think Aventurine would be like as a boss?
Aventurine's first character story tells us that people both outside the IPC and internal to the Strategic Investment Department are explicitly racist toward him, so I would say first that I suspect Aventurine's team is much, much smaller than other Stonehearts like Topaz. For example, we constantly see Topaz's dumb "support squad" following her around in most of the events she shows up in, while we've never been introduced to a single "Aventurine support squad" member.
My suspicion is that, between the rampant racism and the undoubtedly common rumors about Aventurine's dangerous behavior, very few people are even willing to be put on his team in the first place. I suspect he's much more likely to be paired up with one or two "strategic partners" (like Ratio) and sent to handle things that way, rather than actually having a large group of underlings he directly supervises.
But just logistically speaking I'm sure he does have a few underlings, and I think... He's probably a very difficult person to work for, for a couple reasons:
He will almost certainly beat assholes to the punch. If a majority of the people who have been assigned to work with him don't want to be there, you can bet he's not going to wait around for new people to prove they are racist garbage. I imagine that, for the most part, he's off-putting and offensive to new people from the get-go. You ask which desk is yours and he just goes "Oh, feel free to set your things anywhere!" then turns around like: "Wowwww. Jim, this rookie is trying to steal the desk you've had for ten years! How inconsiderate our new friend is proving to be~!" New people on his team probably have the worst few weeks of their lives. (Because... If people are going to hate him on principle alone, he might as well give them a reason, right?) However, this has the effect of weeding out most of the people who are incapable of dealing with Aventurine's antics, so I imagine that the few who persevere through the hazing are probably genuinely decent folks. Those that make it past the initial "Let's see how much you hate Sigonians and disrespect me personally" vibe check probably end up on Aventurine's good side, and I think he eventually eases off his newbies after a while. (Not before they've proven their exceedingly high tolerance for shenanigans and even higher ceiling for shock factor, though. If a new employee makes it past the first month of working for Aventurine, literally nothing else will ever phase them. An elephant-sized Warp Trotter could warp them all six galaxies over and they'd just be like "Anyone got a working cell? I need to tell my babysitter I won't be back by 9.")
I think he's just never there. Absentee boss in the extreme. It's not that he ever slacks or doesn't do the work--it's just that he's constantly going off and doing the missions all on his own. It doesn't matter how many times the higher-ups assign him to do a team task, tell him he has to take the full squad... He just scampers off and does the deal entirely on his own, comes back covered in blood, and is like "Hey guys, I took care of the problem; enjoy some comp time on me!" I don't think he drags his average-level underlings into his dangerous gambles; I think he just does all the work with their clients by himself or with a high-caliber partner. You would think this would make him a great boss to work for, but I implore to put yourself in such an employee's shoes: You go into the office every morning only to see your to-do list is empty. Your boss isn't there to give you any new direction. After twiddling your thumbs for four hours, you find out the reason he isn't in the office this morning is that he's recovering from betting he could take an entire pack of Borisin in a fist fight. He's not in the hospital because of the fight (which he won). He's in the hospital because he was then promptly shot in the back by the guy he was betting with. Why is your life like this? Why must you be subjected to the soap opera of your boss's own self-destructive spiral?
Even when he's around, he's probably weirdly awkward. Don't get me wrong, I bet when he's in a good mood he throws all kinds of extravagant parties in the office, and his employees would never lack for bonuses and perks. But I think he has never really bothered to learn--or perhaps simply does not care--about normal managerial behaviors and boundaries. Like, you slip up and tell him your mother-in-law is in the hospital. He comes back five minutes later to tell you he's just bought six bouquets (sent from your address), commissioned a personally embossed card for her with your monogram, and contracted the services of the best-reviewed individualized medical team in Pier Point under your name. He's patting himself on the back for being an incredibly thoughtful boss. You don't know how to tell him that you haven't spoken to your mother-in-law in years, not since her last attempt to poison you. Every six months he buys the whole team new cars. You have no idea what to do with all these cars. It's too many cars. Put some cars back. He calls everyone his "friend," but even after working for him for years, you still have absolutely no idea about his likes, dislikes, or hobbies outside of the IPC. You could not name his favorite food if someone put a gun to your head. Does he exist outside of the workplace? You literally can't imagine him anywhere but on a mission or at a poker table. He's constantly bringing an "I am the party!" vibe to the room, but everyone else is a bored 8-5 worker who doesn't have a drop of enthusiasm left in their veins. It's like when a singer asks the audience to cheer along with a song, but nobody in the audience makes a peep. Absolutely no one in the IPC cubicles can match his particular freak. Aventurine's a smooth-talker and a street-smart cookie for sure, but something about the way his smile looks like it's made out of plastic when anyone tries to engage him in chitchat at the water cooler gives you the vague impression that he's probably never had an actual friend in his life. If "uncanny valley" was a vibe a workplace could have, Aventurine's office would have it.
Long story longer, I think Aventurine has very few people willing to tolerate him as a boss, whether because they are racist or simply because his quirks are just too quirky. However, I like to imagine the few who have hung in there are ride or die. You know they have an "Aventurine Protection Squad" group chat. They probably all wear peacock-teal and gold accessories in solidarity. They have definitely disappeared people for talking shit on their boss before. Aventurine has no idea how much they actually like him.

I will not be having this marxio bros disrespect, stop hating on my funny electricians/j
Seriously, tho, aside from just the obvious mario parody, I find grouchio's sass and sarcasm funny. But I can understand that the base joke of the Mario bros mixer with the Marx Bros could get kinda old quick
Yeah, I'm absolutely giving my thumbs up to people who find them funny, they're just not for me. I do think Grouchio is the most entertaining of the bunch tho! It just makes me wish they'd been based on the Trotters instead - Grouchio & Chico already have that Del Boy & Rodney dynamic, the third guy doesn't do much anyway, and it'd make the Brit pop culture reference more direct. Plus you could've made them pigs But it's easy for me to sit here years later and say things like that. Hell, if StC had been a bit later, you couldn't had them be based on Jim & Anthony Royale - this kind of duo just works and appears a lot in British media. I'm just not a massive fan of the Mario/Marx bros flavour these guys had

Did Nathaniel Alexander invent the folding chair? Nathaniel Alexander Inventor of a Folding Chair - ThoughtCo On July 7 1911 an African-American man named Nathaniel Alexander of Lynchburg Virginia patented a folding chair. According to his patent Nathaniel Alexander designed his chair to be used in schools churches and other auditoriums. His design included a book rest that was usable for the person sitting in the seat behind and was ideal for church or choir use.
Fast Facts: Nathaniel Alexander
Known For: African-American patent holder for a folding chair
Born: Unknown
Parents: Unknown
Died: Unknown
Published Works: Patent 997,108, filed March 10, 1911, and granted July 4 the same year
Patent 997108 is the only invention on record for Nathaniel Alexander, but on March 10, 1911, his application was witnessed by two people: James R.L. Diggs and C.A. Lindsay. James R.L. Diggs was a Baptist minister from Baltimore (born in 1865), who was a member of the Niagara Movement, and holder of an MA from Bucknell University and a PhD in Sociology from Illinois Wasleyan in 1906.
in fact, Diggs was the first African-American to hold a Sociology Ph.D. in the United States. The Niagara Movement was a Black civil rights movement led by W.E.B. DuBois and William Monroe Trotter, who assembled in Niagara Falls, Ontario (American hotels barred Blacks), to discuss Jim Crow laws following the Reconstruction.
Folding chairs allow the space to be used for other purposes when there is not a class or church service.

MOGAI BHM- Day 2!
happy BHM! today i’m going to talk about the history of prominent Black organizations! throughout the history of America, Black people have banded together to confront the racism and anti-Blackness that lies at the heart of so many American organizations, by forming their own organizations! Many of these organizations have led to advancements, progress, and change, so I’m going to be giving a run down on the history and impact of a few of these key groups!
The NAAL-
[Image ID: A newspaper clipping. The clip is a black-and-white photo of a fairly large group of people, most Black and some white, all grouped together on the steps of a brick building, posing for a group photo. They are all dressed in semi-formal clothing. There are two captions of the photo, one above and one below. The top caption reads: “Members of the Afro-American Council, in session at St. Paul.” The bottom caption reads: “Rt. Rev. Alexander Walters of New Jersey, is in the center of the front row, and Booker T. Washington stands at his right. Mrs. Ida Wells Barnett stands at President Walter’s left.” End ID.]
The first major Black civil rights organization that formed in America was the Afro-American League (the AAL), which changed its name to the National Afro-American League (the NAAL) two years later, in 1890. The AAL was formed by two men- an editor at the New York Age named Timothy Thomas Price, and Bishop Alexander Walters of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Washington, D.C.
The NAAL was primarily formed to address issues of Black citizenship, especially in the South (though it had branches in the North as well). Although the 14th and 15th Amendments had technically expanded the protections of citizenship to Black Americans, the reality was that those protections were rarely actually enforced. Fighting the legality of Jim Crow laws was therefore the primary goal of the NAAL, and it did see some initial success. In one case, Fortune was refused service at an NYC bar, and his case which he brought against the bar was successful. Although this success was short-lived, with the NAAL being forced to disband in 1893, its formation marked the first major Black civil rights organization in America.
The Niagara Movement and the NAACP-
[Image ID: A black-and-white photo of a fairly large group of people sitting and standing together for a group photo in front of a building and beneath a white banner which says “Welcome, NAACP- June 26, Headquarters, July 2.” End ID.]
Today, the NAACP is still considered one of, if not the most, large and influential civil rights organizations in America. It has a rich history, one that starts with another organization- the Niagara Movement.
A very well-known figure from Black history, W. E. B Du Bois was a very prominent activist who advocated strongly against ideas that Black Americans had to be pallatable to white Americans in order to be acceptable. He believed that Black Americans did not have to be toned down to acceptable parts in order to deserve respect, and that was a key spark in his founding of the Niagara Movement with co-founder William Monroe Trotter. A demonstration of this is in the “Declaration of Principles” that it drafter, which stated: “We refuse to allow the impression to remain that the Negro-American assents to inferiority, is submissive under oppression and apologetic before insults.”
After Du Bois, Trotter, and a group of Black teachers, scholars, and clergy were denied access to hotels in New York, they formed a group in Niagara in 1903, where they aimed to powerfully demand equal economic, educational, and suffrage rights for both Black men and Black women. The Niagara Movement met until 1908, when co-founder Trotter left to form his own group because he disagreed with Du Bois’s desire to include women in the Niagara Movement.
However, Trotter’s departure was not the major event that spurred the disbanding of the Niagara Movement- it was the realization that a much stronger organization was needed in response to the increased racial violence that was breaking out across the country, culminating in the violent race riots of Springfield Illinois. W. E. B Du Bois moved from the Niagara Movement to become a founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the NAACP.
After the Springfield race riot, a group of white liberals issues a call for racial justice which was signed by 60 people and released on the centennial anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth- and thus marked the formation of the NAACP. The NAACP had, and still has, a strong focus on local activism and organization. By 1919, its growth had blossomed rapidly, with 90,000 members and 300 local branches across the country.
Very early on, the NAACP established its legal premises and prowess, through key legal victories like that of the 1910 case Guinn v. States, which successfully challenged a racist voting regulation in Oklahoma. In 1915, it also successfuly promoted great backlash against the movie Birth of a Nation, which was demeaningly racist and glorified the KKK.
A key focus of the NAACP was to fight against lynching. Although its many legal battles against lynchings were sadly unsuccessful due to suppression and filibusters from Congress and the Senate, the NAACP was able to reduce public lynchings and their influence through a report they published called "Thirty Years of Lynching in the United States, 1889-1919.”
Another key figure in the NAACP’s history is Walter. F. White, a Black man whose efficacy as leader of the NAACP was unparalleled. He conducted essential research on lynching and succeeded in blocking the nomination of a segregationist judge to the Supreme Court. In 1930, the NAACP released the Margold Report, which became the basis for the successful reversal of the separate-but-equal doctrine that had governed public facilities since Plessy v. Ferguson (1896).
Throughout the Great Depression, which severely hurt Black Americans and their communities, the NAACP fought for racial equity among labor unions and successfully influenced FDR to create thousands of jobs for Black Americans.
The NAACP continued to gain great legal victories throughout the next few decades, and were active during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s. One key function they served during this time period was providing legal representation to Black Americans who had been arrested during protests, sit ins, and notably, hundreds of freedom riders (which will be discussed in another post this month). Under the leadership of Roy Wilkins, the NAACP successfully organized the famed March on Washington of 1963 as well as the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The NAACP continued, as it does to this day, to be at the forefront of anti-racist activism in America, and is to this day a thriving, influential civil rights organization.
The National Urban League-
[Image ID: A black-and-white photograph of two men, one white and one Black, both in the same attire of a black suit with a white shirt, sitting together at a table cluttered with microphones for a press conference. They are with the National Urban League, whose symbol, and equal sign inside a white circle, is on a flag-like banner behind the two men beneath the words “Urban League”. End ID.]
In 1910, a group known as the National Urban League (the NUL) was formed as a merger of three smaller civil rights groups to become one of the most notable civil rights organizations in the country. Its first leader was a man by the name of George E. Haynes, who established the guiding principles of the NUL.
Headquartered in New York City, the NUL formed as a way to help Black Americans who had migrated north, to adjust to life in the North and to advocate for themselves in their lives, especially in terms of economic and social development. The NUL offered programs to help prepare Black youth for all levels of school, promoted equitable housing for Black communities, train social workers how to help Black communities, and many other forms of helping Black Americans in northern cities find employment.
Under the leadership of Lester B. Granger, the NUL began to start tackling pressing civil rights issues like segregation. In fact, Granger played a pivotal role in influencing President Harry Truman’s decision to desegregate America’s Armed Forces in 1948, and during the 1960s it became one of five key civil rights organizations that drove the Civil Rights Movement.
To this day, the NUL remains a key organization for Black Americans- it offers job training, preparation for school and life beyond it, opportunities for housing, as well as other social initiatives.
The Brotherhood Of Sleeping Car Porters-
[Image ID: A black-and-white photograph of five Black men standing next to each other in front of a black railroad car on some train tracks. They are all dressed in the same uniform- a black bucket hat, black leather shoes, black pants, and white collared shirts underneath black button up jackets. End ID.]
A common struggle for many Black Americans in the workplace is being taken advantage of and mistreated by their employers. Therefore, labor unions have been and still are an integral part of racial justice in the workforce.
The first Black labor union to be recognized and chartered under the American Federation of Labor was formed in 1925 by renowned Black socialist and activist A. Philip Randolph as a labor union for Black workers at the Pullman Company, and railcar company. The union fought for an end to mistreatment of the Company’s Black workers, as well as for safer working conditions.
Although the union was met with strict backlash by the Pullman Company’s corporate officials, it was wildly successful, amassing 18,000 members across both America and Canada and producing activists who would go on to lead such important events as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, among others.
Congress Of Racial Equality-
[Image ID: A black-and-white photograph of five men, some white and some Black, all dressed in suits, carrying large signs in front of a store building. The first two signs say “Segregation is morally wrong!”. The third sign says “We support southern sit ins!”. The last two signs say “We walk for human dignity!” All the signs say “CORE” in smaller text at the bottom. End ID.]
One of the most important and impactful organizations of the Civil Rights Era was the Congress of Racial Equality, or CORE. It was formed by a group of Black and white students in Chicago in 1942. CORE’s initial focus was on nonviolent action, which later changed after MLK Jr’s assassination.
CORE was behind some of the most influential parts of the Civil Rights Movement- sit ins, marches, bus boycotts, and the famed Freedom Rides. CORE activists worked with Martin Luther King Jr. on the Montgomery Bus Boycott, perhaps one of the most influential parts of the Civil Rights Movement.
Another key goal of CORE was to integrate businesses and restaurants, and CORE members successfully did so in Chicago. They also focused on voting rights and worked with other organizations like the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to incentivize, empower, and protect Black voters.
When Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered, power struggles occurred within CORE as many members became rightfully disillusioned with principles on nonviolence. From this point on, CORE became dedicated to the Black Power movement and advocated for Black individualism and self-determination.
Southern Christian Leadership Conference-
[Image ID: A black-and-white image of Martin Luther King Jr. surrounded by a black-outlined white ring filled with curved black text that reads “Southern Christian Leadership Conference.” End ID.]
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, or the SCLC, grew out of a need to coordinate and connect southern efforts towards civil rights. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., an officer of the SCLC, became a founding member after his success with the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The SCLC formed to coordinate efforts across the South among different organizations.
The SCLC worked with other groups like the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to promote forms of nonviolent protests. Although many civil rights organizations eventually evolved into Black Power movements and Black separatism, the SCLC and others initially operated through a lens of nonviolence.

Today at the OCPL: The 5th Annual Ann Thomas Memorial Lecture Featuring Alvin Hall
Ann Thomas was an optimistic, courageous woman, a nurse, educator, pioneer, and dedicated patron of the Ohio County Public Library, who was recently inducted into the Wheeling Hall of Fame. After she passed on February 22, 2019, the Library's Lunch With Books program launched an annual memorial lecture series in her honor. Distinguished guests have included historian Dr. Joe Trotter of Carnegie Mellon University, Affrilachian poet Crystal Wilkinson, author and activist Dr. William Turner (pictured above right with Ann Thomas's granddaughter Carrie Ann), and Michelle Duster, great-granddaughter of civil rights legend, Ida B. Wells. The series's 2024 guest will be Alvin Hall, author of Driving the Green Book. On the BBC, Hall hosted the award-winning series, "Your Money or Your Life," on which he offered both practical financial and psychological advice. He is an internationally renowned financial educator, award-winning television and radio broadcaster, artist, and bestselling author. In the summer of 2019, Mr. Hall hit the road, with companions Janée Woods Weber and Oluwakemi (Kemi) Aladesuyi, for a 12-day, 2,000-mile trip from Detroit to New Orleans. The route was based on information gathered from the historic travel guide, The "Negro Motorist Green Book." The Green Book was designed to help African Americans while traveling to avoid places that would turn them away due to Jim Crow segregation and instead lead them to establishments where they would be more welcome. The people Hall interviewed shared powerful stories and memories of that time that became the center of the award-winning podcast and book, "Driving the Green Book. " "Singletary's," aka "The Dixie," the Wheeling restaurant owned by Ann Thomas's aunt and uncle, once appeared in the Green Book as did a few other establishments like Doc White's Pharmacy. Read More About Wheeling in the Green Book. The 2024 Ann Thomas Memorial Lecture will take place at Lunch With Books TODAY, February 20, 2024 at noon. The Library has copies of the book available for purchase and signing by Mr. Hall (Hardcover $20, inquire by email). For more information, check the Library's website at www.ohiocountylibrary.org, or call 304-232-0244.
