The bathroom is not big enough that he can stand without brushing her back, so he perches himself on the closed toilet seat instead. Watches her quietly, taking in the way she leans over the sink, cupping her hands to catch some water in her palms. He clears his throat for a moment, and when she doesn’t look at him, he brushes her elbow with his fingers, trying not to startle her. Offers her the cup when she meets his eyes through the mirror. She turns to take it, a small, grateful smile slipping on her face.

She’s not even sure what that conversation means in the first place. They’ve talked about the future before, in grand declarations of wealth and wild hyperboles of a life where they’re kook rich and living their most obnoxious dreams. But they’d never talked about a shared future, before the Coastal Venture. One that only involved the two of them. It’s too big, too scary, too important to really think about.

JJ knocks his knee with hers on the bed.

She tells them she’s not ready to go home and face her parents yet. That they’re making their way to Kildare, but might take a little longer than expected. None of them argue.

JJ keeps his gaze fixed on their knees.

Kiara lowered the pan, but mostly so he could see the look on her face. “Pretty sure it doesn’t work like that.”

He ignored her, squinting down at the crystal lighting up the coffee table, and then at the plants in the window. He pinched the bridge of his nose. “Oh, shit. Which apartment number is this?”

“317…” Kiara said, and the pieces slowly began to click into place.

He ran a hand through his hair, eyes widening. “Fuck. I’m 319.”

Unfortunately, all of Kiara’s newly found fall spirit and excitement at seeing Pope’s mishaps dies when they get within view of the pumpkin patch.

 She sees an ancient looking green truck, the back piled so high with pumpkins of all shapes and sizes she’s pretty sure it’s some sort of safety violation. Four people hover around the bed. John B’s laugh is the first thing she recognizes, coming loud and clear from behind the folded up table they use to check out guests and their pumpkins. She also spots a girl, whom she assumes to be Cleo, and Pope standing an awkward distance away from her. Then she sees the back of a flannel, and a backwards, red baseball cap pulled tight over wild blonde hair as the person beneath it leans on his forearms against the side of the bed.

 Shit.

He’s still watching her with those blue eyes, like he’s trying to suss her out, and Kiara feels weirdly scrutinised under them. She finishes the dregs of her drink and then slides the empty glass back to him. “Well, thanks for the drink. How much?”

He waves her off before she can dig around for her wallet. “Don’t worry about it. On the house.”

Kiara pauses, and gives him a look. “Really?”

jiara week 2021 - day 4: au JJ turns around, following her gaze, only to find Travis Williams across the fire, laughing loudly. “It’s not Satanic rock, it’s regular rock, you uncultured fuck,” the blond head says, and then it looks up and reveals itself as the single most attractive man Kie thinks she’s ever seen in her life. He has a pillow crease on his face and his eyes are bleary, looking on all accounts like he genuinely has been asleep. Knuckling at one of his eyes, he shuffles into the living room, shirtless, as Kie is quickly learning is custom of the inhabitants of 54B, hair smushed to one side. Her mouth goes a little dry just at the sight of him, lean and golden and grouchy, barefoot, squinting in the light. He follows Pope’s gaze and for the first time upon walking in, his eyes fall on her, and his face— Well, he looks like he’s just seen a ghost. Jesus. Well.
