Summary:

Tang Sanzang and his disciples came to the Kingdom of Women in Xiliang. The king of the Kingdom of Women fell in love with the handsome Tang Sanzang and wanted to keep him. Fortunately, Wukong was clever and tricked the pass, so the four of them were able to escape. The Six-Eared Macaque wanted to replace Wukong to go to the West to obtain the scriptures, so that he could achieve enlightenment. So he transformed into Wukong and deliberately committed murder in front of Tang Sanzang. In order to punish Wukong, Tang Sanzang drove him away. Wukong had no choice but to ask Guanyin for help. Wukong's plans were disrupted by the Six-Eared Macaque one after another. He was furious and started a fierce battle with the Six-Eared Macaque. The two fought all the way from the Heaven to Lingshan. In front of the powerful Tathagata Buddha, the Six-Eared Macaque accidentally revealed his true identity and got the fate he deserved. Tang Sanzang also resolved the misunderstanding between him and Wukong, and the master and disciple reconciled.

I teared up reading this story, it's the first time I read a fiction reflecting this history, and the lasting trauma it put on individuals and the country. It's such an honor to illustrate it, and also put my own feelings into these pictures. Please consider reading this story.

The Best of Telescope Records 1992 Disco / Hi-NRG

Lord almighty, folks; this album was horrendous. Look, I'm sure that Canada made some important contributions to the disco landscape back in its heyday—France Joli's "Come to Me," anyone?—but this rundown of a Montréal-based label called Telescope Records that started to set up shop in the early 80s is one of the worst disco comps that I've ever heard in my entire life. Practically flat, uninspired, formulaically mailed-in assembly line junk that teeters on the edge of sounding like it came out of one of those royalty-free libraries 😵‍💫. Like, the backlash against disco's reign atop the charts may have had a lot of racist and homophobic overtones to it, but the Demolitionists weren't entirely wrong about disco itself—a solid chunk of this music really was excruciatingly substanceless—and the vast majority of this comp is highly exemplary of that fact.

Favorite track on here is a complete rehash of Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way"—one of the greatest disco hits of all time—that was done by Carol Jiani. It's definitely not as strong as Houston's own version, because when it comes time for climactic passion on the chorus, Jiani is significantly more low-key, but because this version of "Don't Leave Me" sounds a whole lot like the version that it's trying to copy, it's pretty much automatically good.

But that's really the length, width, and height of it. Just about everything else on this album is disposably light and vapidly empty, and not worth anyone's time. And I dunno if Montréal's disco scene was enriched by other labels and artists, but I really hope Telescope wasn't at the top of their heap throughout the bulk of the 80s, because this shit is really embarrassing 😑.
