LEMME TALK ABOUT 2 THINGS, HERE WE GO,

1. Following canon, I am 100% down for exploring their shift from super close friends / having that strong almost familial bond to it becoming something problematically romantic in the sense that boy their love is #doomed. In general, just at any point, from beginning to end, but especially their struggle with each other in the second season. Doing something together and exploring how hard it is for them to hate each other when they’re enemies because the two of them do love each other, even when the world has pit them against one-another, maybe even tweaking with canon a bit and exploring more interactions between them where they try to understand the other’s point of view even though it always ultimately fails. L.elouch obviously went to great lengths to try to reach out to S.uzaku at certain points in the story even when it was clear he needed to let him go, so maybe if we want to step a little outside of canon boundaries, we could try having them reach some common ground earlier than they did in the anime’s storyline 🤔 Maybe S.uzaku is made aware of L.elouch’s ultimate plan before they confront his parents, so from an earlier point he’s actually helping / interacting with L.elouch / Z.ero and that gives them more time to talk and us more time to develop their feelings. Then, of course, we could do stuff during the Emperor arc where they’re 100% in sync with one-another: S.uzaku knowing that loving L.elouch is ultimately hopeless at that point bc he’s going to die no matter what he says to him and L.elouch being reluctant to really voice his feelings anymore bc of the same reason. TLDR canon is a very star-crossed lovers kind of thing w/ them and I cry…

2. U want that survival AU we talked about, I got u covered, listen JHBENRG. We could run with that age ‘ole theory that Lulu gained immortality from killing his father and, thus, his death with Z.ero during the public execution is staged. He “dies” and the world is free of L.elouch vi B.ritannia, the demon emperor. Instead of becoming a public figure, Z.ero disappears because the rest of the job is left in N.unnally’s hands and Z.ero is effectively “no longer needed”: the world will always need his image to believe in, but there’s no reason for him to “exist” anymore. Thus, both believed to be dead, L.elouch and S.uzaku both flee together, tbh probably ending up leaving Japan entirely so they don’t run the risk of ever getting discovered – elsewhere, they could just be people who look like the Emperor / Knight who died and they’d get the chance to calmly explore and work through the feelings they have for each other. #Happiness. #Gay. Props if C.C. helped them get out of Japan and saw them off jhebrnghbn.

In the episode prior to Sad Things™, M.illy decides to play a graduation game in which the student body wears these silly heart shaped hats – and anyone who exchanges hats with each other will be considered dating from that point on. Of course, it’s just M.illy being M.illy, but L.elouch and S.hirley end up sharing a moment together sitting int he library.

He’d had a doppleganger in S.ayoko up until that point, playing him while he was away from school as Z.ero, and while she was him, she incidentally ended up going on many dates as L.elouch and outright kissing S.hirley. All of that gets handled, but when S.hirley tries to ask why “he” kissed her before, Lulu blurts out that he likes her and...

Even though S.hirley implies that the kiss (or, from Lulu’s POV, since he wasn’t actually the one who kissed her that time, his feelings) weren’t serious, he quickly rebukes it and trails off, questioning what exactly it is he wants to say here. Up until then, he’s still kept his distance from her either because he was busy or because he didn’t want to get her involved again -- but this is one of the few moments he’s honest with his feelings for her without any worry of anything backfiring. Even if she doesn’t take him seriously, the confession, albeit a “subdued” one, was genuine.

Although he never got a chance to admit to fully loving her, he did give her a glimpse into how he felt for her, though not under the best circumstances.

He also speaks up against her wanting to kiss someone she doesn’t believe actually loves her -- something he would never initiate himself unless she actually DID believe his confession.

Also, like... on a less professional and more sob emoji note...
