this seems so trivial in comparison to other vents but i'm really hurting at the moment; i had a friend who i'd previously defended against people weaponizing her csa over ships completely turn on me because i fancasted natalie portman as elia martell when dorne in the books has a lot of parallels to jewish people & i refused to cede to her assertation that it was a whitewashing fancast when the majority fancast is south asian / desi people due to the show. now i'm a "zionist" & getting harassed by her & the fandom at large.
it's just reinforced that 99.99999% of the time, i can't trust anyone but other jews.

Full Circle: Almost An Arthur
One of the reasons why I believe Mad Queen Dany divided fandom so badly is because, well, ASOIAF has often been touted as the Fantasy that is either realistic or unlike other Fantasies.
Unfortunately, it looped back on its head until it wasnât what was advertised.
I mean, lets talk about this Destined Heir who is growing up from humble beginnings after being displaced from the Throne. Little Arthur Pendragon is little more than a squire for a knightâs son, but then it is revealed that Estel is in reality Aragorn, descendant of the great kings of old! There is a even a prophecy that decrees that when the End comes to the world, Belgarion will be there and stop it! So it was a great day of hope when Dany rose from the ashes with dragons on her shoulders!
Except... There this lady, a woman, high-ranked, a queen who got a bit too much power, and we know these hysterical wimmens and Mad/Evil Queens are just sooo original that this story has at least two heavily featured ones and possibly more by the time this series ends!
Move over Menzoberranzan and make way for Meereen!
And then Alistair (bastard and only known surviving son of the previous kingâs father) grew pissy because I wouldnât kill Loghain in front of his daughter, the queen, and took the throne from Queen Anora (that ambitious btch according to fandom, who happen to have been the widow of the deceased king, oh and that king was about to set her aside to marry the Empress of Orlais, more on her empire later, that the grandking freed the kingdom from after a... shall we say, bad occupation in which Loghainâs mother AND dog were literally rped to death because taxes by Orlesian knights?) and ten years later sends messages in which heâs so incompetent his scribes make fun of him yet the kingdom is still running fine. Also, to receive your knighthood in the Orlesian Empire you have to go to the ghettos where the elven jewish equivalents live and kill random elves! And thatâs just the surface of this empire ruled by a queen/empress (oh, and the great-grandqueen who started the rebellion to free the kingdom died before it was free, just to make sure thereâs no counterpoint Good Queen in Thedas).
Well, I think you all might notice a pattern in popular Fantasy, now, right? Like, Male Destined Heir/Patriarchy=Good; Queens/Empresses/Matriarchies=Bad/Mad and/or incompetent?
And here we have a main female character, ârightfulâ heir to the Throne of Westeros who Brings Magic Back and all that, and taking into account the whole âNot Like Other Fantasy Seriesâ (âNot Like Other Strong Female Charactersâ... âNot Like Other Girlsâ?), and I can totally see why Dany fans cannot believe that sheâs meant to go Mad/Evil Queen. Especially with Queen Cersei Lannister having been born a monster worse than Scylla and Carybdis at birth.
The thing is, GRRM/D&D werenât just content doing Destined Heir with a Twist just by making her female.
They wanted to deconstruct the Destined Heir trope.
Slavery, Colonialism, and you name it. They threw it at this trope to deconstruct it, completely blind to how, simply by making the Heir a woman they were looping back onto another, overly worn, overly annoying, overly prevalent Fantasy trope. Is it really any wonder that a lot of viewers/readers rebelled against this idea?
âOff with their heads!Dracarys!â - The Queen of HeartsDaenerys Targaryen
And then there are those who believe that yes, Dany will turn mad, just not as in the show, and, well, I agree with them. And it is also kinda obvious that with Aegon Targaryen (whether he is the real deal or not) will change a lot of things by virtue of not being Jon Snow.
I could go into my fan theory that Aegon is the Real Deal. That he will bond with Rhaegal. That he will marry Arianne Martell. That Dany will try to force him to marry her instead. That Aegon wont abandon his wife (or take a second one like Aegon the Conqueror) like Rhaegar abandoned Elia Martell. That Dany will believe that history will repeat itself (she believes that if Rhaegar married her instead, she would have been able to keep him in her bed unlike Elia) and kills them in a fury.
Killing her nephew unhinges her, but killing Rhaegalâs rider causes him to abandon her and be vulnerable and ensnared by the Greyjoysâ Dragon Horn unhinges her even more, and so on... But basically, no one will be under any illusions about her sanity or suitability long before she gets near the Iron Throne.
And I could go on, but thatâs just a fan theory. My point is that things would go waaay different than in the show, and yeah, with how the books are right now, it canât really go in the direction of the show even if characters end up âmore or lessâ the same (according GRRM).
There are those who thinks it will go the same, but it really canât with Aegon not being Jon (unless thatâs how Jon will be rezzed, by warging his half-brother, but then again, my theory is that rezzed Jon is a fire-wight with his memories, much like Beric and Stoneheart, and the real Jon will forever be inside Ghost, thus turning Jonâs Ghost into Jonâs ghost, lol, gotta stop fan theorizing), and with the Greyjoysâ story being so different.
The point is that whatever your view point, it is pretty gosh darn annoying that when we for once get a female Arthur Pendragon in a mainstream series, they turn her into a colonialist, slave-owning, pyromaniac Mad Queen.
Like, we have a whole bunch of Mad Queens (or potential Mad Queens)! We even have Cersei Lannister for the Unrealistically-Proportioned-Castles-and-Wallâs sake!
â[...]of course you get into Sansa being jealous of Dany[...]â - David Nutter, Director of Game of Thrones
â[...]Then the Queen was shocked, and turned yellow and green with envy.[...]She called a [ranger], and said, "Take the [Dragon Queen] away into the [Godswood...erm, Red Keep]; I will no longer have her in my sight. Kill her, and bring me back her heart as a token."[...]â - Little Snow-White, a fairy-tale
Yeah... So... Yeah... Here we are?
Anyway, this wasnât a defense or an attack of Dany (or any other character). Itâs just one of the many times I notice how, in an effort to deconstruct a trope, the authors ended up rewriting a much more tired and offensive one instead. Essentially looping in a full circle back to being trite.
#asoiaf#asoiaf meta#daenerys targaryen#the belgariad#lord of the rings#arthuriana#dragon age#dark elf trilogy#Looped Deconstructions#random ramble#is probably not coherent because tired#oh well have it anyway#I have read too much fantasy#too many fairy tales legends and myths

Falling Stars and Mary Magdalene
Growing up in a Roman Catholic family, I did everything I could post-catechism to push away religious learning. Â Funnily enough, here I am pouring over the bible to write a comparison analysis. Â
Today weâre going to take a look into Ashara Dayne, the fair Lady who threw herself from the Palestone Sword tower in Starfall of Dorne. Â The blessed Ashara Dayne- desirous of sovereign contemplation.
This is going to be looked at pre resurrection, analyzing solely Mary of Magdalene and not her relation to Jesus, but her caricature.  While there are many, many, many Ashara Dayne theories out there- and booooy, do I believe in a couple crazy ones- I am writing solely based on what we âknowâ to be true *which, as Iâll go into, isnât much!*. Â
â"She turned the mass of her crimes to virtues, in order to serve God entirely in penance. â
Footwasher. Whore.  Penitent.  These are just several words that could describe Saint Mary of Magdala by a modern day Western Christian, but as all historians and readers know, history as we consume it is not always what truly happened.  We all know that text and word gets twisted- itâs a classic game of telephone.  Many accounts of Mary Magdalene (in Hebrew, of Midgal, meaning Tower ;]) canonically consider her to be virtuous (the four canonical gospels); some do not.  Mary was a Jewish woman who traveled with Jesus as one of his most loyal followers. Mary witnessed Jesusâ crucifixion and resurrection, though we wonât be covering much of that today. Â
Beauty. Dishonored. Dead. Those are words that could describe the Lady Ashara Dayne by any Westerosi, but not every account is the same of Ashara, much like with Mary. Â Texts from different POVs in the ASOIAF narrative have told us little to nothing about Ashara, and barely anything canonical. One thing is certain among the characters we meet: the beautiful Dornish Lady Ashara Dayne, Lady-in-waiting to Elia Martell, was dishonored, and threw herself off of the Palestone Sword Tower into the summer sea.
And they told how afterward Ned had carried Ser Arthurâs sword back to the beautiful young sister who awaited him in a castle called Starfall on the shores of the Summer Sea. The Lady Ashara Dayne, tall and fair, with haunting violet eyes.
Painting a Portrait
Mary Magdalene and Ashara Dayne are depicted as beauties in text by surrounding eyes. Â Most paintings and text depicting Mary tend to depict her with her long hair flowing around her shoulders, to cover her indecency while walking nude through the desert, and to dry the feet of those she washes.
Even after all these years, Ser Barristan could still recall Asharaâs smile, the sound of her laughter. He had only to close his eyes to see her, with her long dark hair tumbling about her shoulders and those haunting purple eyes.Â
The Women Who Walked the Desert
Mary Magdalene was present in some of the biggest plot points in the bible (see what I did there ;] ).  Mary was present in Pilateâs Hall when Pontius Pilate pronounced Jesusâ death, witnessed and wept as He was led to Calvaryâs fatal mount, and witnessed the resurrection of Christ.  While Mary had accomplished and seen much, the âsexyâ parts of her story always seem to reign supreme; much like Ashara Dayne.  Mary Magdaleneâs story highlights the woman with the bad name, who had committed sins, her loose hair, her rubbing, washing and kissing of feet.  These are the dramatic high points of her story- the sexualization of Jesusâ arguably most loyal companion, and the overtly erotic overtones of anointing Jesus with oils and loosened hair, something seen at that time in the intimacy of a bedroom only.
Past a certain point Ashara Dayne is someone only to speculate upon (due to limited text on Ashara in ASOIAF). She was present for some of the biggest plot points of the rebellion.  (likely) during the wedding of Rhaegar and Elia, the Tourney at Harrenhal, and speculatively in a circle of âknowingâ more than the rest of Westeros when it comes to what really happened at the Tower of Joy.  Many (including me) infer and speculate Ashara may have told Ned Stark that Lyanna was being held at the Tower of Joy, due to Wylla being a Dayne Servant and Asharaâs brother, Arthur Dayne, guarding the tower and the savior being born inside of it. Â
While Asharaâs story âendsâ in tragedy in some accounts, though others (again, me) believe she may be in hiding, the dramatic high points of Asharaâs story- being the sought after dancing partner at the tourney of Harrenhal, producing a child out of wedlock, scorned with grief and shame and tossing herself off of the Palestone Sword tower- she is remembered for her scandalous events and the erotic overtones of a tourney, and blood running hot in the false spring.
âLady Ashara Dayne. Itâs an old tale, that one. I heard it once at Winterfell, when I was no older than you are now. I doubt thereâs any truth to it. But if there is, what of it? When Ned met this Dornish lady, his brother Brandon was still alive, and it was him betrothed to Lady Catelyn, so thereâs no stain on your fatherâs honor. Thereâs nought like a tourney to make the blood run hot, so maybe some words were whispered in a tent of a night, who can say? Words or kisses, maybe more, but whereâs the harm in that? Spring had come, or so they thought, and neither one of them was pledgedâ
Eastern Orthodox maintains that Mary Magdalen was virtuous, by their canon, even before her conversion to Christianity, and does not celebrate her as penitent. Â Roman Catholic traditions via Gregory of Tours (6th Century) support the Eastern belief that she retired to Ephesus in the end of her days, but the Western Church believes Mary traveled south of France and died there.Â
The Lady Ashara Dayneâs tragic end story is similarly viewed: most agree she jumped from the largest tower in Starfall, but no body washed ashore, and no body was ever found.  Again: perspective in Westeros gives us this âcanonâ information, however we all know that George RR Martin does not entirely tell us the truth all of the time. Â
In Regards to the Mother Mary vs Mary Magdalene, and Lyanna Stark vs Ashara Dayne
Before we move forward, as that was an extremely spicy title, let me preface with: I am not pitting Lyanna Stark and Ashara Dayne against each other, merely analyzing from a literary standpoint the foil-like qualities they bear on each other.Â
From a normal Westerosi standpoint, the narrative is as follows: Lyanna Stark was plucked from the Storm Lord by the Dragon Prince, raped, and died in a tower. Â
From what we as the reader are aware of, we know that Lyanna conceived a child more than likely in part due to prophecy (not immaculately, but the idea stands and resonates with the prophecy/immaculate conception idea) to bring forward the savior of the world. Â
We are told in the bible that Mary, mother of the King of Kings, immaculately conceived Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. Siddiqah, she who confirms the truth, was visited by the angel Gabriel, and bestowed this blessing.  Now, do I believe this young girl got knocked up by the lordâs thoughts? No, I donât believe that.  Not at all.  While I wonât bear into that, I think yet again we are reminded of perspective and what we are being told- the young virgin Mary may not have been a virgin, who knows how the conception occurred, but I digress.  âI am the handmaid of the Lord.  Let it be done unto me according your word.âÂ
Both Mother Mary and Lyanna Stark are esteemed and held in mind as holy, maternal, pure creatures, looked upon in their death and their legacy as the Queens of Heaven, the God-Bearers, the Ever-Virgins. Â
Comparatively, we have both Ashara Dayne and Mary Magdalene. Â Both are considered by perspective dishonored, broken women. Â Neither are associated with purity or with a maternal eye (though Maryâs maternal side showed with caring for Jesus, washing his feet, being kind to him through his pain and torture, and Asharaâs through bearing a child), and both have been given hideous reputations with no pure truth behind them. Â
While the parallels arenât perfect, I feel a lot of information in ASOIAF and in the bible tends to be pulled from perspective only- which we see, hear and consume. Â Each character that tells their version of the story has a different mind and eye, and itâs interesting to look at the big picture.
Where in the World is Ashara Dayne?
What do I believe?
I truly believe that Ashara Dayne is out there, whether we have met her in the text or in passing we do not know. Â Many of the various theories and speculation surrounding Ashara. Â
I donât particularly agree with Ashara as Septa Lemore, although textually it would fit as a great comparison to biblical text for her to loyally be championing Christâs Son (Aegon), as Mary of Magdalene loyally championed Jesus. Â
Further exploring the ideas in the text, I donât believe that Asharaâs Daughter was stillborn- I think that Ned Stark âdishonoredâ her at Harrenhal, when he was unpromised, and that the Dayne family passed Asharaâs daughter off as their own child once Ned had to fulfill his duty to the Tullys.  I believe the Tower of Joy conspiracy goes deeper than we know, and that deaths were faked, (appropriately, Asharaâs) in order to keep the secret of the prince that was promised, the chosen one, the âKing of Kingsâ.  I do believe weâll learn the truth of Ashara Dayne eventually, whatever it may just be.
She turned the mass of her crimes to virtues, in order to serve God entirely in penance
to close on a quote I threw in earlier, Ashara and Mary both made mistakes in their lifes, and the sacrifices Ashara made in the rebellion ring true. âââââââ
Anyway, thanks for reading! I had a lot of fun looking into this and pulling some comparisons out.  Thanks to Lady of Spears from TPOMF for listening to me rattle all day about this, and look out for others in the series- Leah and Rachel, Sisters and Wives to Jacob v. Catelyn, Lysa and Littlefinger, Blessed Virgin Mary, Jesus and Lyanna Stark and Jon Snow, and possibly some other fun writeups!Â

More 15 characters meme answers!
Does 2 go for a hamburger, cheeseburger, or a veggie burger? If they ordered their burger without any onions, but said burger arrived with onions anyway, how would they respond? Thomas Cromwell would probably, assuming ability to order a hamburger order a hamburger but make it kosher. He would be very polite about any onion related mistakes (though I will say that if someone did the âdeliberately tamper with order because they think allergy faking or anti-semitism (in all my AU verses Tom Cromwell is Jewish because Self Indulgence) then someone is Going To Die because of Tomâs husband and wife. 7, 10, and 12 are contestants in a talent show. What individual acts do they perform, and do any of them make it to the next round? Kez Brekker, Sansa Stark & Jesper Fairley. Kez is doing magic tricks, Jesper is doing trick shooting and Sansa is ballet dancing. Tbh I think they all make it through. 1 orders the last scoop of an ice cream flavor 8 wanted, with 8 right behind them in line. 8 voices displeasure over 1's order. What happens next? Aaron Hotchner goes for the ice cream flavour Daine was really craving but Daineâs husband just conjures up more before Hotch can offer her his after Daine let out a little sigh of disappointment (sheâs not complaining at him, truly but she was really looking forward to eating it). Does 3 know where their towel is? Yes. Chris Pike always knows where his towel is. Where does 4 take prospective dates? Anne Boleyn is taking you somewhere amazing I know that much. No probably the theatre - to an outdoor music event. Dancing somewhere incredible that she can somehow get into. A bookstore and then on to a museum and a restaurant that has incredible food. A dating website attempts to find a romantic match for 5. Out of all the other 14 participants, who would be the most suitable? The least? Henry VIII. Well because my Tudors OT3 Cinematic Universe I am going to say I am so Anne/Henry/Thomas OTP for life. The least suitable person might be Jaskier because those two are The Most Extra Drama Disaster Bisexuals and frankly I do not think the world is ready for that kind of chaos. Though in my Witcher Hunger Games verse they are very good friends. What does 11 do to stay in shape? MAGIC. No I think Yen does train - sometimes it can help to do something purely physical when everything is screaming at her but also you know, magic How would 14 deal with a zombie apocalypse? Jaskier is hooking up with his Witcher Husband & Mage Wife and actually, is probably doing fine. In addition to their current identities, 6 and 3 are both researchers in the field of deception analysis. Are they friendly colleagues and co-authors, or do they hate each other's guts? Rhysand and Chris Pike are very good friends 9, 10, and 15 go out for drinks. What kind of drinks are served, and where do all three find themselves in the morning? Jon of Conte, Sansa Stark & Elia Martell are just drinking hot chocolate and tea. They find themselvesâŠwell Sansa is tucked up in bed, Jon & Elia are curled up on the couch together and Jon has a list of people he wants to assassinate and also some new members of his found family. Bounty hunters 5 and 13 are sent to hunt down 12 and bring them to justice. Do they succeed? Henry VIII & Anafiel Delauney do in fact succeed in hunting down Jesper. I think.Â

17 and 19 (if not answered) for the behind the scenes fic meme, please!
17. What fic are you most proud of? Definitely Such A Time As This which is a retelling/interpretation of the story of Esther featuring Mizrahi Jewish Anne Boleyn because itâs extremely personal and I was terrified of getting it wrong and what kind of reception it would get and I still posted it.
19. Who is the easiest/hardest character to write about? Why? I think I find it the hardest to write the characters who I most relate to (because often I donât think I have the right to relate to them) so like, Elia Martell/Sansa Stark/my OC Pippa is uh, Very Difficult while I actually find Henry almost easy and say, Norwich (who is also an OC) is hard but also easy because I know that mindset. Tom Cromwell can be like Pulling Teeth though I swear and Anne kind of varies.
(Not to say there arenât moments Henry is relatable - thereâs a particular kind of âI canât be good enoughâ insecurity that is relatable though our responses are different)

Okay I have had a Really Really Bad Day and Iâm going to be self indulgent and talk about how much Queen Thayet means to me because @star-anise made some excellent content Tamora Pierce posts and because I want to be brave even when I am scared.Â
So, Iâve always been taught growing up that I was wrong to have the kind of characters I looked up to and I identified with (which I know is not the typical experience and I understand that) - Cinderella because...she was kind and because she loved clothes and loved people and not because she was some kind of doormat who just wanted a man/waited for a man to rescue her.Â
A lot of my life was spent being told I had no right to identify with good people and also that by the people I identified with I was Extremely Toxic. That the Lady Knight and the Lady could never be friends, that the very idea was stupid.Â
And then, then my biracial Jewish âyou canât be a princess you donât look like oneâ self read Thayet. Biracial, loves babies and children, good with people, uses fashion and clothing as a political tool, abuse survivor Thayet. And she and Alanna were friends. FRIENDS.Â
(And yes, Thayet was good at fighting too but like, the above. The above mattered so much to me because Iâd never seen it before. Iâd never thought someone like me could be in the kinds of books I was reading and not be sneered at or have the Lady Knight be dismissed in turn).Â
Itâs why I really want the AUs in which Sansa and Arya are friends from the start. Itâs why Elia Martell matters to me as good, as gentle and kind and wise and loving and from a loving family because...it says someone like me might be valued.Â
So I will always always love Tamora Pierce for writing Thayet. Â
#this is incoherent probably but I AM POSTING ANYWAY BECAUSE I AM TERRIFIED#about lil#jewish biracial fairy princess me
