CRACKING THE UNCRACKABLE: The UPSC EXAMS

Civil services, a dream job for many, an ambition for others, an achievement for a handful!

How do they do it?

Why do some find it easy (or do they?), while is almost impossible for others?

What does one finally achieve after clearing the civil services exam?

Is there, rather can we find, any one thing common among the toppers?

These and many more such questions often come in one’s mind whenever one sees the advertisements of coaching institutes in newspapers or hoardings. Not just questions, these also give some of us dreams. The questions fade away as soon as they arise. But aren’t these question worth of answering? How many children really know the process of becoming an IAS or an IPS?

For a civil service aspirant, who wishes to crack the Union Public Service Commission exams, the first essential is to be a graduate, graduate with any stream – Science, Arts, Humanities, Maths, Commerce! This could bring a sigh of relief as for students of Science stream it comes as yet another choice of career.

Then comes the preparation for the CSAT or the Preliminary Examination which consists of General Studies and Aptitude tests. While the former lets you appear for the Main Exam (generally called Mains), the later is to analyse you or your qualifying nature. Once you qualify, comes the Mains which consists of nine long descriptive essay-type questions (yes, you have to write, a lot and expressively!)

The next is what is generally feared the most – the personal interview. The best of the best administrative service personnel examine your promptness, logic and presence of mind. Everything, believe me, everything, including your posture, mannerisms, composure, your attitude and your aptitude matter a lot at this phase. If your calm wins their hearts along with your smart and quick replies, you are sure to be the next IAS or IFS or IRS!

Besides, the common thing that we are trying to find out is the determination and grit. Pick up the best coffee table books summarizing the life stories of some of the top administrative officers, you will find the stories of one or the other such go-getter who has achieved something that not everyone can. Whether an exam or work, firm determination remains the focal point of every success story. The most distinctive feature, however, lies in the never-give-up spirit!
