With a population of 2 million, the city is less crowded than other state capitals of Australia. This comes with a relatively low crime rate to match, making campuses, public transport and city streets safe and secure. From weekends spent at the beach, to living it up in the city and relaxing, this is one of our favourite reasons to study in Perth, as it is bound to make anyone feel at home.

When on a student visa, you are allowed to work up to 40 hours in a fortnight. Working while abroad is not only a great way to earn money, but a means for you to make unforgettable connections, and learn important life-skills. As a bonus, it is a great way for you to practice your English! Try your hand in hospitality, housekeeping, retail, tourism or administration. If you choose, you could even spend your free time volunteering at one of Perth’s numerous charitable organisations or community programs.

Bloody NBN
POSTSCRIPT: NBN came back up again! We can post tonight.
Sorry this isn't being posted on Thursday evening, as planned. Margaret River is connected to NBN and it is the slowest, most unreliable internet service we have encountered in the developed or developing world. Good one, government. It's a dud.
Firstly the sad news. We received a call from Helen, one of our neighbours today to inform us that Elizabeth, a neighbour since we moved to the The Lodge, passed away last night.
Elizabeth was an interesting person, and there was no such thing as a quick chat with her. But she was a kind and generous neighbour to us. She also didn't have the best of late childhood/early adulthood. Her family was in the Dutch East Indies when WWII broke out and fell to the Japanese. A woman of her age was very vulnerable and exploited.
Vale and rest in peace, Elizabeth.
Back to our travels.
We started the day with a drive down to Cape Leeuwin, almost 50km south of Margaret River. Several claims to fame - Australia's tallest mainland lighthouse, the point where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean and Australia's most southwesterly point, meaning it was the first sight of land after rounding the Cape of Good Hope in Africa when heading here by ship.
On the approach to Cape Leeuwin, we followed a Britz Campervan. It slowed down quite suddenly, came to a stop in the middle of the road and then put its hazard lights on, which we thought was quite odd. And then out waddled a miniature daschund. It was so cute, but shouldn't have been wandering around on a road like that by itself. It waddled back onto a footpath and down a side street, so we figured it was heading home.
We did the leisurely stroll through the grounds with the audio-guide, but did not venture in for the tour to the top. Mainly because of Michael's acrophobia, but also our thighs are still store from our spelunking adventure at Ngilgi Cave!
Headed back north through the town Augusta and turned toward the west to come back via Caves Road. So named, because we drove past Mammoth Cave, Jewel Cave, Lake Cave and had we continued back to Ngilgi Cave.
Passed through the giant Karri forests. There is supposed to be a tree top walkway through the trees, but stuffed if we could find it. Not that we would have done it (must really do something about that acrophobia). We did find a place to park next to a viewing platform that afforded us a great panorama of the forest.
A little way further along, we cut onto side road heading back toward Margaret River. It might seem strange in this day and age, we were actually navigating all of this by way of a paper map, and didn't get lost once.
Stopped into Leeuwin Estate winery very briefly. Not having seen much of civilisation for an hour or two we were peckish and after a light lunch. Something that Leeuwin didn't offer. Very lovely estate, though, with a nice stage for hosting concerts. In March, Jackson Browne will be playing there. In the past they have been hosts to names like Diana Ross, Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones, Sting and a host of other names.
Then onto Voyager Estate. This property is massive and has an Australian flag flying out front larger than the one that flies above Parliament House in Canberra. Which also means a mighty flagpole.
Beautifully manicured gardens, including a rose and kitchen garden. Stunning. We also managed to get a share platter of terrine, salami and pastrami with a bread cooked on site. Just what we needed. Substantial enough for a light lunch, but not heavy enough to spoil dinner (and this was about 2:30pm). Peter enjoyed a glass of SSB with the lunch. Michael, the designated driver, did with water.
We then did a wine tasting of their reds - three sample glasses (25mL each - so across the three about half a standard drink, so driving after that was not a problem). The third one we tasted was outstanding - a mouth explosion - Cab Merlot with a grape we had never heard of before. Thought we might pick up a bottle or two of that (if we purchased wine, the tasting was free). Realised why we liked it so much - it was $70 a bottle. We settled for the first wine we tasted, which we picked up on special for $48 for two bottles. We now have six bottles packed to bring home with us.
We only found out last weekend, via a courtesy email from Great Southern Rail, that once we check our bags in on Sunday, we will not have access to them again until Sydney. We need to pack a cabin bag. Luckily, we included in our luggage such a thing, which we purchased in Bakersfield, California. It also means if all six bottles make it to the train in our packed luggage, they are safe (from us).
From there we did program the sat Nav. One of our hosts in New Norcia recommended the Melting Pot Glass Gallery in Margaret River - she was friends with the owners.
This was the back streets of Margaret River and he had to negotiate a mob of kangaroos both on approach, and leaving.
Gallery is not quite the term we would have used for this establishment. More like a corrugated iron shack in a paddock outside someone's run down trailer park. We did venture in, and although the kiln was blasting away on full heat, not a soul to be found.
Back out and back to the Bridgefield Guesthouse. That is when we discovered the NBN is broken. We did sit in the shared lounge (available to guests from the four rooms). Very well appointed and the main furnishing piece is four seats from (we presume) the WA parliament upper house (they are red).
Heading off shortly for some more fine dining and by the time we post this, we will have made the 350km trek back to Perth. We will take our time, and while we have nominated to have the car back by 4:00pm tomorrow, there is no pressure as we have until 10:00am on Saturday to return.

Mad dogs and Englishmen
At twelve noon the natives swoon And no further work is done But mad dogs and Englishmen Go out in the midday sun
Noel Coward’s words still ring true, it has to be said, as a glance at the car thermometer shows a reading of 40 degrees just a few minutes before 12pm. In our defence, we are on the way home as opposed to heading out into said sun, and this Saturday morning swim did feel particularly refreshing, although there is definitely a mad dog element to attempting anything outdoors on a midsummer’s day such as this while all the locals, wise to the weather, hibernate indoors.
Bushfire smoke, rolling in from Canberra, is another reminder of the dangers which will remain throughout February and probably beyond - but it’s good to be back in Albury after recharging the batteries in Western Australia.
If I told you Rachel had to go to hospital the day after we discovered a snake in the beach cottage, you’d inevitably put two and two together and come up with five, but the two incidents were totally unrelated and doctors dismissed their patient without a worry or the need for any treatment.
It was an absolute treat to be so close to the beach in Shoalwater Bay, and some of the holes we dug must have tunnelled halfway back to England, but the adventurer inside each of us was silently looking forward to some trips further afield - and they duly came.
First stop was Rottnest Island, a 30-minute boat ride from Fremantle picking a path between the colossal tankers anchored a few kilometres out from port. It was straight to the cycle shed for Team Tervet upon arrival and off we biked to the north coast, taking in the beaches at The Basin, Longreach and Geordie Bay before leaving the coast behind and heading to the centre of the island. The views from Oliver Hill Lookout would no doubt have been impressive - but worth coaxing a four-year-old to make the steep climb to get there? We decided not, and swung east back towards the tourist hub and our departure point. The gusty afternoon winds which had been forecast arrived on cue and our voyage back to the mainland was anything but plain sailing. Look left and you could only see the sky, look right and there was the trough of a big wave, before the spray splattered very window and the pendulum began to swing back the other way. To see a crew member walking the gangway handing out sick bags did little to settle anyone’s anxieties, and how he stayed on his feet I’ll never know. Even back on terra firma, the swaying feeling took quite some time to fade.
Rachel wanted postcards but $2 each was daylight robbery so we kept our powder dry. And it cost exactly that to park the car at the train station for (up to) 24 hours the following day so we certainly felt vindicated. Public transport around Perth is so easy and good value into the bargain. It’s a small city and not hard to find your way around, so we traversed between landmarks without much difficulty. Top of the pile on this occasion was Elizabeth Quay, recently redeveloped and very much family-friendly with a cracking kids playground. Ivy also loved her ride on the carousel and we were handed a loyalty card, but the chances of her racking up nine stamps within 12 months and getting a 10th go free are microscopic.
The Mandurah Line runs down the centre of the freeway for most of the way, so travelling by train gives you plenty of opportunities to feel smug as you survey the slowing traffic beyond, although it was us in the car on that exact stretch of bitumen the following day as John & Cilla joined us for a venture into King’s Park - definitely the jewel in Perth’s crown. With more play areas than you could shake a stick at, including the superb Rio Tinto Naturescape, we could have stayed all day, and the views over the Swan River are still just as special as our first visit eight years ago. I loved answering Ivy’s questions about the State War Memorial; it’s so important kids know why we choose to remember those who fought for our freedom so many years ago.
Then came a real change of pace, and direction, as we embarked on a road trip to the south-west corner of Australia. Bunbury has a Dome coffee shop going for it, if little else, but it’s a good place to break the journey as is Manjimup, the last outpost before you plunge into the imposing Southern Forest. It’s about 120km from there to Walpole, all twists and turns, ups and downs, with no more than about 500m of the road visible at any one time. That made overtaking a real challenge so it was heart-in-mouth stuff when you did make the move, and a good buzz at the same time.
Walking 70m above the forest floor at the Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk was good fun but even better was the experience at ground level, marvelling at the monstrous red tingle trees and standing inside the charred holes left in some of the biggest by past fires.
Staying in Walpole with John’s brother, Harold, allowed us to venture off the beaten track and see some real hidden gems. We discovered the Deep River isn’t actually that deep, how the Thompsons of Tinglewood saved a Norwegian crew from their shipwreck back in 1911 and visited that exact spot, Mandalay Beach, where the remains of that wreck are exposed every 10 years or so as the beach erodes. It was hidden well below the sand when we visited but the pounding surf, stormy skies and rugged coastline made it well worth the off-road drive.
Our time on the south coast over, a fair drive lay ahead so we cracked on and after pausing briefly in Nannup, ate up the kilometres through more forests before emerging into the holidaying hordes around Geographe Bay. “You’re permitted to let a ‘wow’ escape” when the coastline at Yallingup comes into view” said our Lonely Planet book, and we sure did, with golden sand and ripping surf bordered by imposing cliffs while the sun shone bright.
We spent that night in Busselton - fish & chips on the beach mandatory - but $4 just to walk on the jetty? A deal no better than the Rotto postcards so instead we took our time having breakfast and then rolled back up the coast to Rockingham.
The ‘red eye’ flight back from Perth probably took more out of us than any of the exploits in WA. Hardly surprising, I guess, given that we took off at 11pm and gained three hours in the course of a four-hour flight. There can’t be many other places in the world where that’s the case.
And so to February, the start of Australian life returning to normal after the summer holidays. Ivy has started Kindergarten and already the kids have been kept inside at lunchtime because of the extreme heat.
Everyone’s following suit at the moment.
Except mad dogs and Englishmen.

You’ll find Margaret River in the South West of WA, in amongst the Karri forests, vineyards, spectacular beaches and incredible caves. It’s only 3 hours away from Perth, and extremely close to a number of amazing locations including Hamelin Bay, Busselton, Dunsborough, Prevelly and Augusta.
Redgate Beach is just one of the incredible places to visit.
What makes Margaret River so good?
There is something for everyone to enjoy around Margaret River. Whether you are an adrenalin junkie, food lover, wine addict, nature aficionado, 4WD owner, avid fisherman, craft-a-holic or local produce enthusiast, you’ll find lots to do. If you are chasing a relaxing break away with lots of time spent at a spa, it ticks that box too. Margaret River is home to numerous festivals every year and is visited by WA locals, travellers and international visitors year round.
There are so many wineries to enjoy.
Margaret River weather
Much like the rest of southern Australia, the south west of WA receives its rain and colder weather between June and August. The warmer months are December, January, February and March. Regardless of what the weather is doing, it’s a spectacular place to visit year round. In summer, the south-west is a hugely popular destination for those who live further north, as it’s an escape from the hotter weather.
Whatever the season, you can enjoy what the area has to offer.
Adventure in Margaret River
There are more adventure activities to do in Margaret River than you can poke a stick at. From canoeing the beautiful Margaret River to world-class surfing and body boarding, hiking, mountain bike trails, cave exploration, adventure rope courses, cliff abseiling, helicopter rides and the list goes on. If you love adrenalin, the south-west of WA is one giant playground.
If you are keen on some serious adventure, do an adventure caves tour at one of the bigger caves; you’ll go beyond the usual tourist path and crawl, climb and slide your way through some of the most beautiful underground caves in Australia.
Margaret River has world-class surfing.
Food and wine
Margaret River is famous for its food and wine. With the annual Gourmet Escape festival held in November each year, and more wineries than you’ll know what to do with, it’s a combination you’ll never tire of. A lot of produce is created in the South West; from fresh wood-fired bread to delicious fruit, chocolate, cheese, yoghurt, olive oil, candy, berries and the list keeps going.
Visiting the Margaret River Market.
The farmers market in Margaret River is held every Saturday morning at the education campus and is full of amazing produce that you can buy for a great price. This is 100% worth the visit, even if it’s just to top up your fruit supply and get a snack for breakfast!
There are more amazing places to have a meal at in the South-West than you’d be able to visit in weeks of staying there. Most wineries have amazing menus, with food that is truly spectacular. There is a heap of cafes and restaurants that also add a lot of value to the region, so check them out.
Margaret River is known for amazing wineries.
Nature
One of the major reasons so many people flock to the South West is the stunning natural beauty. From towering karri forests to some of the best beaches in the world and everything in between. You can spend weeks exploring the region.
The natural spa at Injidup Beach is hugely popular as are the many caves (Mammoth, Lake, Jewel and many more). If you don’t mind a bit of gravel driving, that can be somewhat corrugated the Boranup Forest Drive is spectacular, just off Caves Road.
If you are keen on seeing stingrays, Hamelin Bay Beach is a fantastic place to check out. It does get very busy though!
Explore Lake Cave when visiting the region.
4WDing and fishing
For us, the real attraction is the natural beauty, combined with great camping and 4WD tracks. With a bit of adventure, you’ll find some of the most amazing little 4WD tracks around Margaret River. They take you to pristine, quiet beaches or through incredible forests. Bob’s track, Point Road, Kilcarnup and North Point are just a couple of the amazing places you can take a 4WD.
Fishing in the area is fantastic off the many beaches and rocks, but the ocean can be unpredictable and rough, so stay safe when near waves that can roll in.
Explore the Point Road 4WD track.
Amazing beaches
If you are looking for beautiful beaches, then the South West has you covered. Many are 2WD accessible and easy to get to, whilst others require the use of a 4WD and tend to be more secluded. You can visit where the mouth of the Margaret River meets the ocean, or explore the many rock pools that line the coastline.
Beach access can be had in a huge number of locations from Dunsborough right the way down well past Hamelin Bay. Smiths Beach is a truly stunning location to spend the day, as is Gnarabup and Redgate. If it’s busy, or you want something different, just hop back in your car for a few minutes and drive to the next one!
There are some amazing hidden beaches at Margaret River.
Arts, crafts and local produce
A huge number of high-quality local produce comes from the Margaret River region. From fine woodworking furniture to glass blowing, jewellery, textiles, paintings and photography through to fruit and vegetables, you can be sure to pick up something amazing.
The chocolate factory, fudge factory, cheese factory, candy cow and a range of other foodie attractions make up a perfect tasting tour day out.
If you are after something a little different, there is a giant shell collection at Bellview Shells, just out of town that is absolutely amazing.
Check out the amazing food at the markets.
Accommodation at Margaret River
There is every form of accommodation you’d ever want around Margaret River. From unpowered bush campsites to beach shacks, glamping, backpackers, motels, apartments, tree houses, mud brick cottages, lifestyle blocks, bed and breakfasts, Airbnb’s, luxury resorts and super high-end homes for rent.
Being such a large area, you’ll find accommodation in Margaret River itself, Prevelly, Gnarabup, Boranup, Cowaramup, Metricup and Gracetown. Each location is unique, and beautiful in its own way.
You can stay near the beach, or set back on amazing properties with rolling hills, or nestled up amongst the karri forests with no one around for miles. There are some truly amazing homes that can be rented for a couple of families to stay at, and it works out pretty cheap overall.
Staying in a cabin at Boranup Forest is one of your options.
Camping around Margaret River
The best place to find a campsite in Margaret River is on the Wikicamps app. This shows you the well known (and some lesser known) camping locations in the area. You can stay close to the coastline, or set back amongst the forests.
There are a number of places that you can camp at, ranging from the usual caravan parks through to private property stays and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) sites like Jarrahdene and Contos.
Jarrahdene is a fairly new DBCA campground not far off Caves Road, nestled under the Karri Forest with well-maintained toilets, camp kitchens and lots of sites for different size camping setups. Booking is 100% online, so do it prior to arriving. This is a fantastic bush camping site and comes highly recommended.
Jarrahdene is a fantastic bush camping site.
Kids and Margaret River
If you’ve got young ones, there’s a huge amount of fun to be had in the Margaret River area. From the beautiful Rotary Park just out of town with its bridge over the river and great playground to a number of animal farms, winery playgrounds, kid safe beaches, mazes and cafés or town playgrounds, you’ll never be short of something to do.
The Rotary Park playground is perfect for the kids.
Other great places to check out
At the end of the day, the whole South West is a beautiful place. Augusta, Hamelin Bay, Yallingup, Dunsborough and Busselton are all spectacular places in their own right, but all within an hour’s drive of Margaret River. This means no matter where you stay, you have a huge range of options.
One thing worth mentioning is that you have options when it comes to the wind; sometimes the beaches at Margaret River are windy and unpleasant, but if you head up to Dunsborough often the beaches facing the other direction are perfectly flat, calm and beautiful.
Where Margaret River meets the ocean.
Is it busy?
Margaret River can be quite busy; it’s well known, and people come from all over to check it out. However, like anywhere, if you are prepared to look around you will find plenty of great places that allow you to have lots of peace and quiet. The main town and beaches are well known and get a lot of traffic. If you want to get away from the crowds, head to the lesser known attractions, or just follow your nose.
Margaret River is truly an amazing place, and rates highly for us as a place to head for a weekend away from Perth, or a week away from the big smoke. If you haven’t been there before, put it on the list; you’ll love it.
Are you going to add Margaret River to your destination list?

MAGIC in the sky tonight! We were super grateful for members from the Astronomy Society of WA for sharing their time and passion with us tonight arranged by our school. We saw this beautiful crescent shaped moon and was able to see the area that Apollo 11 landed on the moon! Super cool... plus other stars, nebula and constellations like one called the jewel box! ( I did ask but it looked more like diamonds and definitely no pearls!)These photos were taken on my iPhone through the lens of a telescope! An incredible night and filled with gratitude and blessings! Thanks for the inspiration and conversation about astronomy! Brilliant- we will definitely do this again! #nightsky #astronomy #stars #moon #perth #night #telescope #stargazing #photography #photooftheday #feelgood #gratitude #perthstylist #perthimageconsultant #moniqueleahy #lookgood2feelgood #wellness #mindfulness #health #wellness #holisticstylist #thefeelgoodstylist #perthnow #colour #style #image #brand #stellar_shots #instagram (at Claremont, Western Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwHp_K8FPU9/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1j5758bz71iex
