lantern - how did you meet your best friend? what were your first impressions of each other?• i met melchior gabor during bible study, when i hit him in the head with mine by accident. we were kids. my first impression was that he better stop trying to claim i couldn’t play captain, and that he was self-centered for wanting to be the only captain! i loved him to death anyways. i still do.

Behind The Counter

• a very short fluff story to satisfy my little gay heart

The smell of freshly ground coffee beans lingers in the air and spins around in invisible spirals, attacking the visitors‘ senses. Fake leather couches and simple IKEA furniture try desperately to beat over this smell with their own but it’s in vain. They will never win.

Snowflakes fly wildly outside and battle for dominance on the window next to which I’m sitting. It looks like they want to attack me for no reason whatsoever; maybe they want to get to me and deliver a secret message; maybe they want to envelope me in their cold but soft embrace and not let go.

I’d accept both options.

But for now, I am not only entirely under the spell of this comfortable couch and a fluffy blanket that’s thrown over it, but also utterly, irreversibly captivated by deep brown eyes that, despite glancing in my direction maybe once or twice, have burnt into my soul with such an intensity that cannot be described by any human being.

I should explain.

Yesterday I discovered an entirely new coffee shop in my uni town, which is why the following day I packed my stuff and went in there to explore a bit. What hit me in the face was a Victorian-like café; but that was nothing compared to the magical creature I saw behind the counter.

I say creature because no human being could possibly be as magnificent as the girl currently polishing a coffee glass with a dish towel.

I stood there for what felt like an eternity, silently observing the oval face framed by black hair cut in a pixie style. Her red-and-blue flannel shirt was adorably big for her but damn if it didn’t look good!

When her eyes met mine and she smiled sweetly before asking me what it was that I wanted, it took me a couple of seconds to get myself together enough to stutter out the first beverage I saw on the signboard above.

Which is why I’m currently sitting at a table right oppossite the counter with a pumpkin spice latte.

I hate pumpkin spice.

My German textbook is desperately trying to catch my attention and I feel a bit guilty for ignoring it completely. My eyes are constantly drawn to the lovely barista, to the curve of her lips, the depth of her eyes and the way her hands cradle gently the fragile glassware. I wonder how those hands would feel if they cradled my head.

Okay mister, stop right here. She’s way out of your league. I thought you’ve learned your lesson by now?

......you might be right but I’m choosing to ignore you, for now.

...as you wish.

I finish the coffee (ugh!) and get up to pay. I proceed not to go to the ground when I go absurdly weak in my knees the moment she flashes me a smile and I manage to get out of the café without embarassing myself any further.

I can’t come back here. Ever.

No. That’s such a lie.

I absolutely have to come back.

I become a regular here. The couch I learned to think of as ‚mine‘ welcomes me every time with a soft huff. The barista – I found out her name is Silke – is present every single day. She is an open and cheerful person; I saw her once whistling an unfamiliar but pleasant sounding tune while preparing a moccachino and when she turned around unexpectedly and caught me staring, my face sported a red colour brighter than the jumper I was wearing. My German textbook laying unopened on the table laughed at me. What a spiteful creature!

Silke’s eyes are the ones that bring me peace during dark nights after one of my nightmares. Imagining her calming voice when she once spoke to a terrified child who got lost is the only thing that can bring me from a verge of a panic attack to a state of calmness. Where once was a deep black hole filled with despair is now her bright presence.

Is this what being in love feels like, I wonder? The voice in my head laughs. I ignore it, once again.

One day, all changes.

Along with my coffee I also receive a small saucer with a piece of a honey cake. I look up, confused – I didn’t order any desserts. Silke just smiles and tells me it’s on the house, then bloody winks at me and leaves. I would be lying if I said my heart didn’t skip a couple of beats.

The cake has a small chocolate heart on top. I don’t find the courage to ponder if it means something.

‚You‘ve cut your hair.‘

It’s so unexpected that my hand twitches and before I know it, my coffee is spilled on the table. My textbook as well as my phone got out of this unharmed, thank god. I get up, apologising frantically and trying to clean the mess with paper tissues. She just laughs quietly and brings me a dish towel while telling me it’s alright and trying to take the blame because apparently she should’ve predicted I’d get startled. I’ll have none of this; it’s not her fault I’m a walking trashcan. Gosh, she must think me a complete idiot.

Apparently not because she reappears a second later with a fresh new cup of coffee on a wooden tray, sets it on my table and....is it just me or is she hurrying away faster than usually? Well, now you’ve done it, you scared her away. Stupid. Stupid!

I’m all ready to leave this place with the determination to never ever come back again when I notice a small piece of paper sticking from under the cup. It’s slightly pink and looks like torn out of a notebook.

All it says is ‚Just wanted to tell you you look incredibly cute ;)‘

Oh dear God, sweet Mary and Jesus.

It takes all my willpower not to react in any visible way even though my breath hitches and my legs feel like made of jelly all of sudden. I reread the note over and over until I am undeniably convinced it says what I think it does.

I never thought something like this would happen. Yes, I get called beautiful and cute sometimes but mostly by bold men who should be minding their own business. They see just a piece of meat to be consumed, hence I refuse to accept their compliments. With girls, however, it is quite different; I know it’s coming from the heart and I know it’s genuine. No sick games behind it, just a wish to deliver this message to another girl and make her day brighter.

I didn’t notice how much time flies and before I know it, there are 5 minutes left before my next class begins. I finish the drink quickly, ignoring the way the still hot liquid burns, and go to pay. And, well, you might’ve noticed I’m a bit of a shy weirdo when it comes to girls but truth is I can get flirty as well. Which is why I look into her eyes and flash her a wonderful smile right before leaving, the small note clutched tightly in my left hand.

I’m in such a hurry that I don’t notice my textbook still lying on the table.

Please be open, please be open, please be open, I chant as I’m approaching the coffee shop. The weather has decided to turn absolutely monstrous in the last two hours – snowflakes icy and sharp, attacking my face; wind so strong the trees are crying under the brutal force. It seems like the wind itself wants to push me into safety the café offers and protect me from the havoc outside.

Open. Thank heavens.

I burst in, my glasses fogged and my hair dishevelled; the weather has done a magnificent job of making me look like a bit of a madman. My eyes go first to the coffee table I sat at a couple of hours ago.

The book isn’t there.

‚I think you’re looking for this.‘

I turn in the direction of the familiar voice. Silke’s eyes seem darker than usual, the brown irises almost entirely hidden by black pupils blown wide. Surely the consequence of the poor lighting; I mean, it’s already dark outside.

In her hands, my book. It sure looks content in there, looking awfully proud of itself for bringing me back here.

I take it cautiously and thank Silke for keeping it for me. There’s something......something in her eyes. It looks like she wants to say something.

And she does.

‚Won’t you stay, for a while? I mean, the wind’s gone bonkers outside and I bet you must be freezing, if your red nose and fingers are anything to go by.‘

And I do.

It’s only at home when I notice a pink note peering out from the book. It reads Date tomorrow, 7pm? ;)

Warm, comfortable and happy. That’s how I feel when I wake up in the middle of the night. I’m not alone, though; Silke’s here with me, spooning me from behind, her hand laying gently on my tummy, her legs tangled with mine under the covers. She’s deeply asleep, I can tell. Her rosy lips are resting on the nape of my neck, warming it with hot puffs of breath, just a short distance away from a small hickey she left there couple of hours ago. I can’t say I’m complaining.

For the first time in maybe forever, I feel as content as a woman can be.

This date’s turned out rather well, I’d say.

Morning after (a Captain America MCU sickfic)

This is basically ch. 2 of the one about Bucky getting drunk (This shadowless night). Thank you to Royal Ermine on AO3 for chatting me up to this.

Steve wakes to an unfamiliar room streaked with morning light. He shifts onto his hip and sits up, letting his legs slide through the empty sheets on the other side of the bed. The events of last night come rushing back up to meet him, and Steve struggles into yesterday’s jeans before slipping down the hall.

As expected, Bucky’s in the bathroom, hunched over the toilet. He’s mid dry heave when Steve steps through the doorway, muttering, “Jesus fucking Christ,” and spitting out mucous.

“Hey,” Steve whispers. “Still not feeling good?”

“Yeah…” Bucky gags hard, his body jerking forward around a tremendous empty belch that brings up nothing for the effort. “S-sorry.”

Steve ignores the apology and squats at Bucky’s shoulder, running his hand down Bucky’s bare and sweat-damp back. “How long you been up?”

“Don’t know. Was still dark…” Bucky swallows convulsively. The clock is just now turning 7:30, so Steve credits him an hour. Certainly no less than 45 minutes. Which is still impossibly too long to spend doing…this.

“You should’ve woken me up,” Steve says. “No one should have to do this alone.”

“Maybe I, uh, didn’t want you to see me,” Bucky groans, too deep in the toilet bowl to make eye contact. “Pay for my sins��”

“What, you turning religious on me?” Steve asks with a smile to mask his pitying expression.

“Naw,” Bucky says, coughing. He surfaces and turns his head to look at Steve. His eyes and nose are streaming, sending drips of snot and saltwater down his paper-white face. “Turning stupid.”

“You’re not stupid,” Steve says. “I mean, this definitely wasn’t one of your better ideas, but it’s ok. This kind of stuff happens to everyone once in a while.”

“Not to you,” Bucky exhales. His skin goes a shade of grey, and he starts to heave up nothing again.

“Hey, alright,” Steve intones, patting Bucky’s back. “Breathe through it.”

Bucky hacks. “Sorry, Stevie.”

“It’s not about me. Or you listening to me,” Steve says. “I think the lesson here is…you can get through stuff. We can talk about stuff. And you’re doing fine.”

“I don’t feel fine.”

“Yeah, I guess not,” Steve says, smiling in spite of himself again. “But you’re sick ‘cause you’re hungover, not because you’re having a panic attack or something. That…kinda feels like progress.”

“I guess,” Bucky whispers. “Fucking messed up, though. I’m never doing this again…” He does a decent job suppressing the next gag, but squints and furrows his brow against the obvious dehydration headache.

“Yeah, good,” Steve murmurs. “What do you say we get you some breakfast?”

“Ugh. Not hungry,” Bucky groans.

“That’s why you feel so sick, though. ‘Cause you’re starving.”

“Fuck. I know.” Bucky shoves himself back onto his heels and pushes his lank hair back out of his face.

“Ok.” Steve presses a kiss to Bucky’s temple and gets to his feet. “Put some clothes on. I’ll see what I can get going for you.”

“Thanks,” Bucky sighs. “That…didn’t really sound right. I mean it. Thanks.”

“I know you do.”

In the kitchen, Clint’s making coffee while Laura fries eggs, and the kids are at the kitchen table sorting M&Ms by color.

“Morning, superdope,” Clint says. “Hate to break it to you, but we’re all out of pumpkin spice.” He pours Steve a cup of black coffee.

“No, this is good. This is better,” Steve says.

“How’s Bucky doing?” Laura asks.

“He’s, uh…still feeling pretty rough,” Steve replies, wondering how appropriate it’ll be to bring his hungover lover out to crash family breakfast.

“I’ll put on some toast,” Laura says. “Will he go for that?”

“I think so,” Steve answers. “We’re both pretty out of practice with this.”

“Well, lucky for you, I’m a dad and a party animal,” Clint brags. He sets a place at the table with a cup of coffee and a bottle of orange Gatorade.

Steve sits down with the kids and munches through the brown M&Ms Leila and Cooper have generously shared. It seems to be taking Bucky an absurd amount of time to get moving, and Steve’s on the point of going to check on him when he finally appears, his jeans sagging on his hips and his wrinkled flannel shirt unbuttoned over his sweat-stained white undershirt.

“Hey, here you go.” Clint finishes pouring his own coffee and points Bucky to the seat between Steve and Cooper. “I didn’t know if you were starving more for caffeine or electrolytes, so I got you set up with both. Laura’s working on your protein.” He nods at his wife, who waves back with her spatula. “And the kids are doing a number on the sugar.”

“Hm. Ok,” Bucky grunts, still looking like he’s fighting down nausea.

“Or, you know what?” Clint starts with an aura of mock wisdom. “November first is the magical day where Starbucks puts away the PSL and brings out the peppermint mocha…I could always run down and grab you one of those.”

“I don’t know what that is,” Bucky croaks. “But it sounds terrible.” He wraps his hand around his hot coffee mug and hunches down so his chin practically rests on the table.

Steve claps him on the shoulder. “Yeah, you’ll probably want to leave that one alone. At least till you’re feeling better.”
