Chapter 59

The next morning, Christmas morning/Maddi’s birthday. It’s 5am Seth and I wake up to Maddi crying. She wants to get up. Seth is still pretty tired.

I tell him “Go back to sleep, Babe. I will get up to her” I give him a kiss before getting up.

He says half asleep “Bring Maddi in here”

I go and get Maddi. She sees me and says “Mom!” excitedly

I say to her “Good morning! Happy birthday!” I know she doesn’t understand me, but I won’t feel right not wishing her a happy birthday.

I pick her up, carry her back into our room. I put her on our bed. She starts giggling “Dad!”

Seth smiles “Happy birthday Kiddo!”

Seth gives me a kiss “Merry Christmas, Babe”

I smile and reply “Merry Christmas”

We hear Mum and Dad up, so we get our arses out of bed and go into the living room. We all say “Merry Christmas” to each other Mum and Dad then get excited and say to Maddi “Happy birthday” She gives them a big grin

We are waiting for Harper and Dan to show up so we can all have breakfast. They finally show up at 8:30. They say “Merry Christmas” to all of us, then say “Happy birthday” to Maddi.

After breakfast, we exchange gifts. Mum, Dad and Harper would have loved to spoil Maddi rotten, but Seth and I said not to because it will be a pain in the arse getting it back to America.

At 1pm after lunch we have a birthday cake for Maddi. Of course Maddi tries to grab the candle while it’s lit. I catch her before she does.

We all stay up pretty late. My family are a big fan of the card game Euker. We stay up playing that, Seth isn’t a card player at all. He buddies up with me so I can teach him how to play. He doesn’t catch on. It is a difficult card game to get the hang of. I ask him “What are you like at Texas Hold ‘em?”

Before he can answer Harper says “We aren’t playing poker against you” then explains to Seth “No one in our family plays poker against her, she kicks our arses every time. She bluffs big time”

Seth finds this amusing “That’s not like you at all is it Babe?” he has a hint of sarcasm

Dan asks me “How about you and I go head to head? Loser pays winner $100”

I wasn’t expecting that! I tell him “$300”

Seth asks me"Jesus Christ, are you crazy?“

All I say "Nope”

Harper says to Dan “Don’t do it!”

Then Dan says to me “$300 it is” totally ignoring Harper

I ask Dad “Would you mind being the dealer?”

Dad says with sarcasm “I would be honoured”

Everyone is totally engrossed in our game.

Seth was next to me, looking at my cards and the way I played them. I get dealt a shit hand. I bluff and raise Dan. Seth gave away that my hand was shit. He asks with slight disbelief “Why would you do that?”

I could tell Dan was just about to fold until Seth opened his fucking mouth. Then Dan calls. There’s no point in going on with the hand now so I fold. I rip into Seth “Why the fuck did you open your fucking mouth?” I know I over reacted. I take my poker seriously.

Mum is stern with me “Mandy, that was uncalled for, apologise to him”

I did feel guilty after she said that. I give him a kiss “I’m sorry Babe” then I add “I will make up for it when we go to bed”

Harper says to me “Too far, Mandy, you should have just stopped at sorry”

Dan catches on to what I was trying to do, he says to Harper “She’s trying to psych me out”

He’s good, I will give him that.

2 hours have gone by, everyone is still watching intently. We are both 'All In’. If I win this hand, it’s game over, if he wins this hand, the game continues but I have alot of catching up to do.

He reveals his cards first. He has a cocky look on his face, he’s positive his hand has won. He has an Ace high straight. As soon as I see his cards. I start laughing hard. I say “Suck it, mofo, royal flush!”

Harper immediately says to Dan “I told you not to do it!”

Dan and I shake hands. I say to him “Great game. Thankyou”

He replies “Well played. I look forward to more in the future”

He gets the $300 out of his wallet and goes to hand it to me. I see the look on Harper’s face. I know she’s a bit upset. They are trying to save for their wedding and that bet did not help.

I tell Dan “Put the money towards your wedding, I don’t want it”

He tries to insist “No, it was a bet and you won”

“Well take it as a gift from Seth and I as an engagement present” I’m stern with him

I make more than enough money, not only through competition, but through endorsements and media commitments. I’ve even done a few television commercials!

Just as Seth and I were heading to bed, Harper pulls me aside “Thankyou for not taking the money, we really need it”

“I know you need it Sister, I don’t. I know you don’t want charity, but if you want a loan to help out with your wedding, let me know” I tell her

She gives me a hug “Thanks again, I will let you go to bed now, Goodnight”

“Goodnight” I give her a kiss on the cheek.

Seth and I are in bed. I say to him “I noticed you weren’t as tired today”

He replies “I actually felt pretty good today, hopefully it stays that way.”

I ask “Are you still getting messages from Jess?”

With an annoyed tone he says “Yes”

“Why does she want you now? It’s been 2 years since she broke up with you”

He sighs “I have no idea, I haven’t asked her. I’ve only been ignoring her, but it’s not working”

“My solution is still on offer!” I laugh

He laughs “No!”

“Ok then, I’m going to sleep now” I tell him

I give him a soft kiss then say “Goodnight Babe, I love you”

He replies “Goodnight, I love you too”

We snuggle into each other and go to sleep
