Another Kentuckian, whenever I see Stuart’s name I think of a comment he made about how to qualify home. He said (and I paraphrase) that ‘home is the place in your dreams where your mind can rest; the bedroom of your youth or the fields of your father, always seek to live in the place which brings you peace. This is the place of your homest home.’ He decided to stay in Kentucky and live on his family’s 5th generation farm and to write almost exclusively about Kentucky. He got translated into 60 languages, so something in the local connected with the global. This is a reprint, but I’ve not dug enough to find when the true first edition came out. I found this for rather cheap opened it to find a little photograph hidden in the back along with a lengthy inscription. Score! The inscriptions by Thomas Benton look strangely appropriate for ‘As I Lay Dying., Very Good jacket with a Fine book. Jesse Stuart gives advice. Funny enough, this book arrived in the mail today and I couldn’t help but share the photo. This is an interesting book of previously published poems that Stuart arranged to somewhat mirror his life’s journey. “I Shall Go Back to Earth” shows a bit of Stuart’s love of rurality, and the rhyme scheme that I shy away from, but I’m not sure I can think of any other American author who writes Spring quite as well as him. First edition, deluxe edition, signed and limited 33/145. I know I didn't post much this summer, but now that school is back in session, and I've need for more distractions, I should start posting more regularly again. Though I enjoy reading poetry from all over the world, 450 pages of pre-16th century Irish verse is difficult for me to slough through in a week. So, distraction: I found this on eBay for a difficult to swallow $8, and it arrived in the mail today! This is a signed first edition of another of Jesse Stuart's novels, 'Mr. Gallion's School.' I haven't read this, but perhaps after the endless pages of Irish verse are finished? Like a lot of the books Stuart signed, this one is inscribed. Interestingly, I stopped by a book shop a few weeks ago and saw the complete works of Jesse Stuart had just been purchased by the shop, all inscribed first editions. I'll take some solace with this one. I found this in the vertical stacks at a local book store. Jesse Stuart was a Kentucky author and often minimized as local color. Though much of his fiction and poetry concern KY farm life, he was also an education advocate and longtime teacher. I found several of his books signed last year, and so I was pleased to find another first edition by him to add to the growing collection. The book appeared to be in good shape, and while inspecting it at the store I checked the dust jacket, leafed through the pages for any obvious flaws, and checked the front and back pages for writing and there was none. After I got it home, I realized that there is a library card pastedown on the next to last page! Unlikely spot for it, but I somehow missed it anyway. It isn't a particularly valuable or rare book, but I'll try to take it as a lesson to check more thoroughly when hunting.
