Austenland is a breezy, fun, but predictable romantic comedy starring the charming Keri Russell. It was directed and co-written by Jerusha Hess, wife of Jared Hess (director and co-writer of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre). It is based on a book by Shannon Hale, who co-wrote the script with Hess. Russell plays Jane Hayes, a woman who is obsessed with the world of Jane Austen, immersing herself in Austen’s stories and imagining the day when she finds her very own Mr. Darcy. While her best friend thinks it’s unhealthy, Jane nonetheless purchases a vacation to “Austenland,” a getaway that boasts to be able to give visitors an authentic Jane Austen experience, complete with men who respect women and flirt chastely with them. Jane’s experiences there make up the bulk of the movie. And though viewers will know where the majority of the story is going long before it gets there, the pace is lively, the performances spry (featuring great supporting turns from Jennifer Coolidge and Bret McKenzie, just to single out two), and the writing not condescending. Though the characters could have been one-note (as they often are in a romantic comedy), Hess and Hale have managed to flesh them out so that the heroes don’t seem flawless and the “villains” don’t seem like unrealistic jerks. It’s an excellent choice for a romantic night. Make sure you stick around for the credit sequence, which is a hilarious cast romp set to Nelly’s “Hot in Herre.”
