A couple of lines or eight pages, a Middle Eastern stamp or a suburban postmark . . . I hoard all these letters like treasure. One day I hope to fasten them end to end in a half-mile streamer, to float in the wind like a banner raised to the glory of friendship. It will keep the vultures at bay.

There comes a time when the heaping up of calamities brings on uncontrollable nervous laughter--when, after a final blow from fate, we decide to treat it all as a joke.

Erm...happy Easter!
Jeremy Brett’s character is Maurice Sweetman :) and I think that’s Alison Leggatt as Lady Sweetman in the bunny ears. This play was called “The Workhorse Donkey” and there is some literature about it on the site; it’s described as a “north-of-England fertility-comedy”.
I found this photo on the same site where I found the pics from “As You Like It”.
#seriously look at everybody's expressions in this pic#sorry if this is depressing#i hope you have a good day anyway#jeremy in theatre#jeremy brett#1963#the workhorse donkey#i think it's a political satire?#i know easter isn't till tomorrow but i'll be w/o internet for a while

I long to escape, but every time the chance arises, a leaden torpor prevents me from taking even a single step. I am petrified, mummified, vitrified. If just one door stands between me and freedom, I am incapable of opening it.

Today it seems to me that my whole life was nothing but a string of those small near misses: a race whose result we know beforehand but in which we fail to bet on the winner.

So I did not have time to commit this crime of lèse-majesté. As a punishment, I would have preferred to be transformed into M. Danglars, Franz d'Épinay, the Abbé Faria, or, at the very least, to copy out one thousand times: "I must not tamper with masterpieces." But the gods of literature and neurology decided otherwise.

"Are you there, Jean-Do?" she asks anxiously over the air. And I have to admit that at times I do not know anymore.

But to keep my mind sharp, to avoid descending into resigned indifference, I maintain a level of resentment and anger, neither too much nor too little, just as a pressure cooker has a safety valve to keep it from exploding.

Like the bath, my old clothes could easily bring back poignant, painful memories. But I see in the clothing a symbol of continuing life. And proof that I still want to be myself. If I must drool, I may as well drool on cashmere.
