Jeoseung Saja: Korea's Psychopomp/Grim Reaper

Deep down, I wanted to get into magic/mythology/spirit work from my roots -- from Korea. (Yes, I am Korean raised in the US)

I'm not really interested in the modern take of Korea either other than I just want to learn more about our vast ancient history and Korean shamanism down the line.

None of the Korean pantheon was pinging me though. The only thing that pings to me intuitively is the Dokkeabi (Korean goblins) and the Jeoseung Saja. (저승사자)

Who are they?

Jeoseung Saja are basically the grim reapers/psychopomps of Korea. They primarily serve to guide souls to the afterlife -- and yes, they're more than one of them. They are said to be a class of bureaucrats responsible for this task of guiding the dead. They wear high quality black hanboks with their traditional "gat" hats to signify they are beings of authority...and they smoke to apparently to de-stress. Ha...

Interestingly, there are claims that they can be killed despite their role.

Sometimes, they are known to also aggressively chase people who try to cheat death, and only certain wards can keep them out...but not for long.

...

My relatives and I described them as tired men at work going in and out of our world on a tight schedule, to come pick us up eventually like Uber drivers.

I am curious in just learning more about this, and possibly just leaving offerings like a snack stop for them.

This took me a while but here is reaper baby (I don't know what to color for the soul she's holding but let's say the color of the soul is yellow-orange)

fully aware that she must be breaking some rules of the very handy "101 dos and don'ts of a good jeoseung saja" handbook, and probably those that come with severe consequences and punishments, arang barely even hesitates in her path as she trails behind the other. endless years have passed with her suppressing the urge to look for the familiar name in the life and death record logs for mortals, because getting curious about a past lover is obviously not what one should be doing if one wishes to move on with their life. even though a life is basically out of question for her now, but she could still attempt and pretend that things have changed for the better. for everyone.

at least, that's what she thought, until she ran into a century old vengeful spirit some time ago.

let's just say putting her old best friend down wasn't easy.

her next move of tracing back the records didn't take as long as she'd initially thought, and while it leaves her in a rather ... frustrated state realizing that if she had done this earlier, then maybe her friend would've gotten to be at more peace sooner. and now she just needs to make sure he is too. not long after, she's found herself with an address, and some time spent navigating the neighborhood has her easily finding the person who has once occupied the biggest space of her heart.

she would've been content enough just pretending they're taking a scroll through the park together -- just like old times -- albeit the noticeable distance between them. as long as he's alright, she tells herself. until the distance is closed before she even notices and could stop herself, the urge to speak to him growing its roots deeper.

"nice weather, huh?" she speaks up, sounding as decent as she could just like speaking to any other stranger, "what a nice neighborhood. it's my first time here."
