2/15/13 - Meshuggah/Animals As Leaders live at Roseland Ballroom in New York City on Friday, February 15, 2013 review.
First off, MUCH respect to Animal As Leaders. Intronaut are cool too but unfortunately I missed them this show. It's been a while since I've been blown away by performance #1 by any band that I have been only listening to through headphones and that streak ended on Friday night!
I love vocals and bands without them (for the most part) have always been relegated to some nerd metal subgenre that I had no desire to explore too much more in depth.  Man, this band is the real deal and the lack of vocals made no difference to me anymore.  It was amazing to see how nuts all the fans in the crowd were going and how full Roseland was for this opener.  Everyone respected this band because they commanded respect.  How many bands can you say REALLY do that?  Not many.  The solos – complex enough to confuse Stephen Hawking (in college) but delicate enough to put little babies to sleep, the breakdowns mirroring Meshuggah at times literally made your head band along to intricate beat.  The entire band was so tight, it makes you mad how tight they were causing the swirling frenzy of swaying bodies and syncopated fist pumps right through the last note.
The songs felt like a thousand little swords precisely, profoundly attacking your ears and soul with no relent, dropping little jazz-timed bombs all over your brain. The musicians are each so talented in their own right that couldn’t help to feel privileged to be there.  Sometimes, you wanted to tear those giant speakers hanging from the stage down and other times just rock gentler during this rock clinic. They were the perfect complement to the impending Meshuggah, who they humbly acknowledged during their set. Thank you Animals As Leaders for keep things moving forward and can’t wait to see you again!
So the question in between sets was becoming more and more pronounced - would Jens Kidman, lead singer of Meshuggah perform or would his duller, plainer, immobile cardboard brother be singing tonight.  I obviously wanted Jens to be able to perform and when the lights went down and the first few notes began to play, the red glow on stage remained constant through the guitars and then I got my wish.  Jens broke right into “Swarm” and he sounded awesome!
I would say that I have been Meshuggah fan from the second I first heard “Future Breed Machine” on WSOU and couldn’t comprehend what the fuck the awesome was that was coming out of my speakers. I have seen Meshuggah every time they’ve been in New York since except when they opened for Ministry at Irving Plaza (I love Ministry but thought it would be weird for Meshuggah to open up for anyone. They are that special of a band and know all Meshuggah fans think that too.
Amongst Meshuggah fans though, there exist the different types of fans. Meshuggah were the innovators and the forward thinkers of this genre of music and that's a lot considering they used to sound like a Metallica tribute band (a super amazing one at that), cutting edge during Destroy, Erase, Improve, then crazy as fuck in Chaosphere, to the darker, slower vibe that began with Catch Thirtythree.  I am definitely a fan of the Destroy, Erase, Improve through Chaosphere period but that’s just personal taste.  If Meshuggah had made the same exact album over and over, I probably wouldn’t even be a fan at all.  But they keep things so fresh with each new album. With that being said, it’s not that I don’t enjoy the latter period.  When you see these songs performed by Meshuggah live how complicated the band really is.
You could hardly tell that Jens had been suffering from some hardcore flu that sidelined him for the last few tour dates but tonight, Jens and the boys were not going to let down a packed Roseland Ballroom down.  Meshuggah has a fervent fanbase in NYC and Jens really put his all into the performance and although he was still exhausted from battling the sickness, his voice sounded SICK, pun intended.  Weaving in and out of songs from Catch Thritythree, Obzen and KOLOSS, even a DEI and Chaosphere junkie like myself found superlative solace during this set.  I banged my head incontrollably to recent bangers like “Do Not Look Down”. The bartenders definitely thought my head was going to fall off; it may have.  The guitars sounded those intricate notes across 8 strings loud enough for the suckers on Broadway to even hear.  “Mind’s Mirror” let you hear exactly how perfect and precise Meshuggah’s guitarists sound. Tomas killed it on the drums as usual and beat the fuck out of that kit like they had done something awful to him.  He is like a machine in terms of accuracy.  Through 11 solid sounding tracks, Jens had finally done all he could and introduced Sacha from Intronaut to fill in on “Future Breed Machine”.  Those first couple of notes are unmistakable and although Jens’ growl was missed, Sacha did a great job and “spectator Jens” agreed as well.  The final bow must have felt like such an achievement for Meshuggah given the circumstances, but a venue full of fans that were there for every minute was a veritable medal for the whole band reaching this finish line.
All in all, a night like this goes to show the continuing power a band and their fanbase have on the outcome of a band’s performance.  The synergy between audience and band obviously can bring about miraculous recoveries, especially when we’re talking about a band as masterful and dare I say, religious, as Meshuggah.  By the looks on the faces, the sweat drenched on the shirts and the bruises from the pits, many of us definitely had a religious experience that we won’t forget.  Until next time Mesuggahners.
Here’s the set: 1. Swarm 2. Do Not Look Down 3. Behind the Sun 4. The Hurt That Finds You First 5. I Am Colossus 6. Mind's Mirrors 7. In Death - Is Life 8. In Death - Is Death 9. Shed 10. Bleed 11. Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave It Motion 12. New Millennium Cyanide Christ (Sacha from Intronaut on vocals)
Encore: 13. Dancers to a Discordant System
