I have been reading an absolute mountain of books recently in preparation for our book club's upcoming Best of 2019 Picture Books List (stay tuned!). And while it may seem that you all are seeing a lot of them, the truth is that you're seeing only a fraction of the ones that the publishers have sent out for consideration, because I'm determined only to share those titles with you that fit the strict criteria and high standards that were the reason I started this bookstagram in the first place: so that you know that anything you find here is already going to be vetted for its awesomeness. Today's choice, for example, has been one of my absolute favourites out of the pile--funny, because at first glance I wasn't sure I'd like it! The cover illustration looked more abstract and scary than anything I'd usually choose! But... "Grobblechops" (2019) by Elizabeth Laird, and illustrated by Jenny Lucander, was a wonderful surprise. The illustrations inside were reminiscent of real family life, warm and a bit jumbled and messy, but with all the familiar trappings. And the story, about embracing our fears with humour, made me think of the classic Mercer Mayer story that I shared @noodlenuts_classics today ... a reminder not to let our anxieties take over, that sometimes perceived enemies are just friends we haven't gotten to know yet. A big thanks to Tiny Owl Publishing for this one.
