REVIEW: Oh, the Places You'll Go - HTI's "Seussical" is a Whimsical Delight for All Ages
Tumblr media
Seussical the musical is a contemporary re-imagining of Dr. Seuss' beloved characters and their stories of friendship, integrity and love. The musical comedy shapes the witty, wild and whimsical world of Dr. Seuss and opens the doors wide for imaginations of all ages. The show has a rocky history of being known for its misdirected design elements, stunt casting, lackluster script and being one of the biggest Broadway flops of all time. With that reputation, it was difficult to imagine it would have life once it closed on Broadway. However, once the rights were available for regional, community and school productions, Seussical found life once again and is now considered an endearing, albeit flawed, part of the musical theatre catalogue.
HTI embraces the production with a high energy cast and a real love and respect for the world of Dr. Seuss and the stories we have all grown up with. From the deviously charming Cat in the Hat to the honourable Horton and the lovelorn Gertrude McFuzz, the cast is full of recognizable characters who come together and take the audience on a delightful romp throughout the pastel-infused jungles and beyond to help a small nation of Whovians be heard by all.
Director Joshua Arcari has made some fantastic design and casting choices for this production. The set design appears simple and straightforward but then the backdrop (built accordion style) changes as the scenes change. This is the first time I have seen this kind of design element implemented on a community theatre stage and it is truly magical to see it (literally) unfold. The set and several of the props are beautifully illustrated in the Seussian style with bright pastels and the keen eyes of the enormous painting team have transformed the stage into a world of whimsy and warmth. Likewise, the costume design by the trio of Hamilton Muses was impressive. Their combined efforts of creating functional yet unique costumes for each character really stood out in this production and helped coax the audience's imaginations to believe these actors were elephants, birds and more. Clever and creative work by all involved.
Arcari has also worked hard to ensure this large cast is utilized effectively and alongside his choreography team Katlyn Alcock and Erika Bennett, have created some great moments with unexpected acrobatics and lifts throughout. The ensemble, as per usual with HTI, supports and allows the more seasoned performers their moments to shine while never fading into the background themselves. From monkeys to birds to the delightful Whovian people, they are all there for one another on and off stage and that is what helps this production to translate from script to stage as well as it does.
Musically, the songs are nothing groundbreaking but they do carry the messages within them effectively. The band is led with great enthusiasm by Musical Director Jennifer Ferreira who worked with the cast to ensure the pacing and sound levels were not overpowering anyone on stage which did not go unnoticed. The music itself is energetic and flows well from one song to the next. The music artistry and talent at HTI is never lacking and this band is no exception.
The standouts in this production are hard to narrow down. Newcomer Emma Grace Stead portrays the young protagonist JoJo with just enough sass and charm to win us over immediately. Her vocals are strong and she showcases some great range in songs It's Possible and Alone in the Universe. She even surprises us all with her belting during The People versus Horton the Elephant. Craig Winterburn is a dedicated and empathetic Horton who we root for the entire show. He has some wonderful moments in both versions of Alone in the Universe and his melancholic lullaby Solla Sollew. Chantal Furtado raises the roof with her ability to riff and belt as the Aretha Franklin-esque haughty Sour Kangaroo (and her young Kangaroo played by Penny McKay, being the youngest cast member on stage, definitely shows real potential for a future in musical theatre).
Further standouts include Melissa Kuipers as Gertrude McFuzz who fully commits to her character and stuns us with her vocal range and, despite her character's timid portrayal, is truly captivating every time she is on stage (big tail or no!) The General (a commanding performance by David Gibel) was a force to be reckoned with and was one of the most enjoyable antagonists I have seen staged. The flirty, slightly antagonistic and irresponsible Mayzie LaBird is played with sass and confidence by Allison Dickson. Finally, the mayoral couple of Paddy Skinner and Alissa Jambrovic are equally charming and are delightful personalities on stage.
But what of the Cat? The Cat in the Hat? Portrayed with absolute joy, wit, and powerhouse vocals is Jacob Rushton. Rushton leads with over 15 years of theatrical experience and it shows. He engages us from the start and has several moments of hilarious audience interaction throughout (another clever decision to use audience participation to engage and delight the younger audience members). This is the role that truly makes or breaks Seussical, and Rushton makes this mischievous character his own while staying true to the Cat's classic antics. He is the very definition of what it means to be a lead and this production is elevated by his abilities and skills. Bravo.
Seussical is not a deep musical. It's not meant to be. Despite its script being simple, it manages to carry the morals of its original source material and provides great reminders to audience members of all ages that you should always be true to yourself, be honourable and, as was reiterated numerous times throughout, that a person is a person, no matter how small. Families will especially enjoy this outing to HTI (watching this show among several young people gave this reviewer some wonderful, unprompted insight into how enjoyable they found it) but anyone who loves these classic stories and characters will find the charm and whimsy of this production in spades. Oh, the places you'll go in Hamilton, Ontario! Don't miss it.

Before we move on to ranting about this election, can we have a moment of thanks for Mike Pence. When the chaos broke out on Jan. 6, secret service tried to get him in a car and away from the trouble. The man refused to go until he made sure that election was certified. He also thought the image of his motorcade running away from the Capitol was a bad look. Thank you, Mike Pence. You sure turned out to be a hero. We salute you. Again, before the election, Trump yells like a fiery mixed- up preacher and the MAGA crowd eats it up. Fear is all some folks understand. When you raise children with a limited view of the world, this is what can happen. Some were surprised that Dr. Phil was on board but I was not too surprised. I assumed he was conservative and rich but I did think he had a bit of empathy. I was wrong on that. The joy on some of the Trumpers face as he spews his hate is something else. It is so reminiscent of the euphoria we saw on the faces of the Manson girls. I am glad that none of them are a part of my inner circle. Evangelicals seem to have a definite problem deciphering good from evil. They seem to fully embrace the evil.  They are in the wrong business!! I will never understand how people equate loud, angry bombastic behavior with strength. I was taught that these were bad qualities. Do these voters blame others for all their failings too? Do they complain about shit all day like their leader does?  Isn’t the bully usually the one who isn’t productive beyond the posing and bullying? Where do I begin? The country is so fucked!!! If a person voted for Trump the first time, I can forgive cuz perhaps they do not pay attention to the world the way they should. If a person voted for Trump the second time, I don’t get why racism isn’t a dealbreaker but at least he lost. To vote for Trump a third time leaves no doubt. The racist, fascists are here to stay. The 60% of men is not that surprising but the young and the white women who voted for this man is surprising. To stand in a booth alone and honestly think that a criminal who liked to sleep with his friend’s wives, led an insurrection and does not pay his bills is a good honest man to run the country seems absurd. And why do they think the rich should not pay for their crimes? I have been so inspired by the young and their love of diversity and their sensitivity for the climate et al. I am now so disillusioned with the young and the hate they are embracing. It seems a disservice not to call out the racists on the mainstream media. Let’s be clear about what it is. If someone stands in front of the world and sells hate, the supporters should yell it proud and quit hiding behind bibles. They should be proud to call him their false prophet. Either half of the country is racist or perhaps too ignorant to know what misogyny or fascism is. It feels like Joseph McCarthy, Roy Cohn, Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes have accomplished their mission. The country is in the clutches of the evil doers.  ** McCarthy’s self- motivated crusade set the arts and democracy back many years. - Sid Caesar : And here we go again. ** I am trying to reason it out. The economy is so good right now and will only get better thanks to Harris and Biden. Just like last time, the mess has been cleaned up and he can fuck it all up again. Scary Clown 45 will reap the benefits. The democrats tried to spread joy and nourish a country for all but, half the country was not interested. The man has promised to end so many things we need and love in this country. We better believe him. I don’t see how we can unite the country because many of us will never be the racists that they are. They will have to kill us first and I am sure they will get around to that. The Trump administration lost 200,000 jobs in his last term. Biden gained 700,000 jobs for the country. Unemployment will probably be off the charts if Trump sends all the government employees away like he promised. The 1883 Pendleton act, the merit -based system that prohibits political firing could be under assault. Once the people keeping us safe are gone, companies will have a free for all without regulators keeping watch. There is a reason we don’t just trust companies to do the right thing. I will keep hope that our systems hold but we know with most of the Supreme Court on his side, it looks shaky. When will the Trumper gangs start roving and making trouble? What will the brown shirt types be called? MAGA fighters? Trump ass kickers?  The technical side has started with messages telling some to show up to pick cotton and telling women to get back in the kitchen. We have to face the fact that we live in a hateful, racist, Christian country and they seem so happy we are suffering right now. ** Will the second term just be a dud like Pres. Cleveland’s?? Yes, Joe should have dropped out sooner now that we know he has been struggling for a couple of years but he didn’t. This idiot who wrote about wasting a billion dollars on Kamala. Typical behavior towards a woman. Media needs to be more open on both sides. On right wing tv, they do not show much of the bad thigs that Trump does. The mainstream does not show the times he is hugging a kid or talking to a fan. We really do see different things. Some say she was too woke. Wrong! Some say she went too far right. Wrong! They were up against a cult. Dems are very inclusive so, of course they will have a lot of differing ideas. The more technical we get, the dumber we get. He may have technology that we don’t yet know of. By then it will be too late because America may not be here. Giuliaini is bitching that he can’t pay his bills. I used to really believe in this country but now, I am not so sure. But what do we do now? Do we lay low so as not to be jailed or executed? Do we fight? Mass suicide?? Perhaps it is just time to detach from this society, to go off grid. What would it be like if half the country just dropped out?? I do not have the answer. I am just glad that I do not have long left on this earth. Not sure if I’ll be back next year. Will we have free speech? Will it matter? Do we have the strength to fight these criminals? I may be in the camps if things go really wrong. I love U all.

And that infants can do math? Our animal brains deal with quantities in very specific ways, from quick counts of a few dots to how we perceive larger numbers. All of Salem is still very concerned about the whereabouts of their beloved mayor, so naturally, Black Patch is on the case.
Black Patch, in case I haven’t mentioned before, is a private eye firm consisting of John, whose last name is Black; and Steve, who is also known as Patch on account of the eyepatch. Get it?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As far as I can tell, Steve is the brains, hands, mouth and every other useful body part of this operation. John just kinda sits nearby being excited, like a dog. It’s adorable to watch, but Steve gets some extra “stuck doing all the work in the group project” sympathy from me.
Then Paulina shows up, to do what Paulina does best: pester people about whatever job they’re trying to do. Are they doing everything they could be doing? Could they be doing it faster? And would it help if I stood here and kept asking you those questions while you’re trying to work?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, Black Patch has no way of knowing that Abe is alive and well at Nurse Whitley’s house. (I was originally under the impression that this was a very brief guest appearance for Kim Coles. But if she’s sticking around then I suppose I should start using her character’s name. Unless and until I get bored and think of some other dumb thing to call her, I suppose.)
Abe is still marveling over that footage of him from 2008 that was on the VHS tape he was watching between episodes of Body and Soul.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then Whitley comes home. Wait — is Whitley her first or her last name? I do not have this information!
Tumblr media
Abe confronts her about the whole “I seem to be the mayor of this town, so what the actual hell?” thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She comes back with a truly bizarre web of lies that boil down to “yes, you were mayor, but you got impeached because of… EJ DiMera. And… I don’t know, Jennifer Horton.” (If not for the callback I made to Jennifer running Gwen over with her car, I would not even expect you to know who that is! But I did make that callback, so you really need to start keeping up here.)
Abe either believes these lies or decides not to argue the point any further. And they settle in for — YES!! — more Body and Soul!
And look, I was already excited about this incredibly stupid soap-within-a-soap. But now we find out that there’s an actual character named Thrust!
Tumblr media
Heh. Thrust.
(Okay, so years ago — actually, starting the same year that Abe was elected mayor — I started reviewing the entirety of the 80s Transformers cartoon on YouTube. And I never stopped being delighted by the existence of this guy, whose name is also Thrust.)
Tumblr media
Heh. Thrust.
Abe, noticing how much amnesia there is on B&S, tries to engage Whitley about his own amnesia. She responds by switching the show off entirely.
THIS HAD BETTER NOT BE THE LAST WE SEE OF THAT SHOW, DAMN IT.
Oh, and remember yesterday, when Li decided to take Megan up on her whole “kill Stefan” idea? Well, it turns out that Wendy walked in right as this was happening! You didn’t see her the last time around, because they weren’t paying her to be in that episode you weren’t paying close enough attention.
Tumblr media
“Hey,” she says, dancing to the only tune this show seems to know lately (walking in on part of a conversation and grilling the speaker about what they heard), “who were you talking to just now?”
Tumblr media
Li makes up a bunch of entirely unbelievable lies about seeing a matchmaker. Wendy doesn’t believe him, because seriously… matchmakers haven’t been a serious thing since this lady did it in the early 60s.
Tumblr media
But then Wendy realizes that her brother has had a breakthrough: he’s not scheming to get Gabi back anymore! He’s moving on with his life! And she lays all of this on super-thick because dramatic irony.
Tumblr media
Speaking of laying it on thick, they’re really going out of their way to show us how in love Gabi and Stefan are.
Tumblr media
This post-coital shot in particular got my attention — it’s almost something approaching artful by this show’s standards. Also Stefan makes a horribly dark joke about wondering if Jake’s heart would be up to more sex. (Jake was his twin, who died and unknowingly donated his heart so that Stefan could live again.)
Tumblr media
But yeah, these two are so blissfully happy together. I get it. And I’ve been watching this show (and… really, all shows) long enough to know that this means something very bad is about to happen to one or both of them.
Tumblr media
And speaking of something very bad, EJ walks in on Megan’s conversation with Li about “getting rid of her brother” and hey, it’s time to do that dance again!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
EJ reacts by angrily ejecting Megan from his home. (Okay, so it’s the ancestral home of the entire DiMera family. But he owns it. So he can be a little shit about it.)
But Megan rallies, first by throwing a weirdly out-of-character whiny temper tantrum. But THEN she clues EJ into her real intentions: killing Stefan! The brother he doesn’t like!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
EJ balks at this idea — he only wants to ruin Stefan’s reputation and take away all of his material possessions, not KILL him! So he threatens to go to the police and/or Stefan about this. Which leaves Megan with no choice but to bonk him over the…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
…well, when I watched this the first time, I could swear she bonked him over the head with that vase. But I should have realized that she’s only three apples high and EJ is a mighty redwood and that just isn’t physically possible. And boy, it looks pretty silly when you slow it down, frame-by-frame, like this!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then she drags EJ’s unconscious body into the secret passage that literally everyone who’s ever lived here (including at least two small children) knows about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But Gabi and Stefan enter and see the broken vase (and make a shitty comment about the help — BOO!) and then exit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So… wait, was all of that just a bunch of masterful misdirection?! EJ was the one in danger, not Stefan? Things could not possibly pan out this way. But if they do… I guess I was wrong and this show actually is kind of good, though?
