Milestone Monday

On this day, August 14 in 1863, American writer and poet Ernest L. Thayer (1863-1949) was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Thayer, who honed his satirical chops at Harvard as editor of the Harvard Lampoon and as a member of the Hasty Pudding theatrical society, was best known for his comical ballad Casey at the Bat which cemented the mighty Casey into American folklore alongside Johnny Appleseed and Paul Bunyan. Casey at the Bat was first published in The San Francisco Examiner in 1888 and became popularized by De Wolf Hopper’s vaudeville performances and many adaptations throughout history. It is considered one of the best-known poems in American literature.  

Within the Special Collections holdings, we have a copy of The First Book Edition of Casey at the Bat published in 1964 by Franklin Watts Inc. and illustrated by seasoned children’s book artist Leonard Everett Fisher (born 1924). Fisher’s simple illustrations capture the nerve-racking energy of the poem and almost animate off the pages. The edition also includes an introduction from famed baseball player and manager Casey Stengel (1890-1975) who takes the opportunity to clear up any misgivings that the poem was written about him and shares his account of a private performance of Casey at the Bat from Hopper as congratulations after winning a game for the Giants.

Houston dash fc: if you like rooting for an underdog and won't get discouraged. a team that has struggled historically but is still fun to watch. A lot of international talent, did very well in the draft. The team has a new head coach Fran Alonso who just came over from the Scottish women’s league. You can watch the team work to implement their new style in real time. Jane Campbell #3 gk for the uswnt as of late won goalkeeper of the year last year. Lost a lot of players to free agency and is rebuilding with rookies, trades, and transfers. somehow both the straightest team and the gayest team at the same time.

Head coach Juan Carlos Amaros won coach of the year last year and the team won the championship. They have struggled with injuries this year and scoring more than one goal in a game.

Portland thorns: if you like soccer dynasties. traditionally one of the most successful teams in the nwsl with a lot of local support, the h th orbs struggled in the first few games with their worst start to the season ever. Following the firing of their head coach, the team has won 6 in a row in interim hc rob gale. Has a lot of strong attacking talent but is vulnerable on defense. The home field is turf.

Racing Louisville: if you want to watch a team turn around. a team that has struggled historically has put together a solid team in the offseason under new head coach bev yanez. Got some very good rookies in the draft and is off to a decent start.

San Diego wave fc: if you like to watch a team underproduce. very successful for a team established in 2022. Has a very strong system but has struggled with injuries as of late. The home field is shared with San Diego state football and is not always in the best condition.

The home field is turf.

Looking Ahead to 2024

With the new year finally here, I thought this would be a good time to list the films I am most excited about coming to theaters in 2024. So I present the films I am most excited about coming out this year (in alphabetical order):

Ballerina

Spinning out of the John Wick films comes this action thriller starring Ana de Armas that takes place between John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4.

Beetlejuice 2

Apparently, it took 36 years for someone to say his name three times because Beetlejuice is back! Tim Burton directs the sequel starring original stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara and joined by new addition Jenna Ortega.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.

I'll be honest, I really liked Beverly Hills Cop III and am disappointed we never got to see the 2013 CBS pilot about Axel Foley's son. Count me in for the fourth film coming to Netflix this year.

Deadpool 3

The lone Marvel Studios film coming in 2024 is a continuation of the Fox Deadpool series. But with Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine, this one is one to watch.

Dune: Part Two

Return to Arrakis with director Denis Villeneuve for this adaptation of the second half of Frank Herbert’s Dune. Originally slated for a late 2023 release, it is finally coming this year.

The Fall Guy

Ryan Gosling is a stuntman turned investigator in this action comedy, based on a 1980s TV series, co-starring Emily Blunt, Winston Duke, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Anya Taylor-Joy is Furiosa in this origin story focused on Charlize Theron's character from Fury Road.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

The Splenger kids are back in this sequel to 2021's Afterlife (and the fourth film in the Ghostbusters series).

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 and Chapter 2

While this may be two films, let's count it as one. Coming this year is Kevin Costner's epic Western Horizon. And don't forget, Costner has plans for four Horizon films.

John Krasinski writes and directs this fantasy comedy starring Ryan Reynolds as a man who can see people's imaginary friends.

Joker: Folie a Deux

Joaquin Phoenix returns as the Joker is joined by Lady Gaga has Dr. Harleen Quinzel in this sequel to 2019's award-winning Joker.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare

Guy Ritchie directs Henry Cavill in this action spy film about the British black ops during WWII.

Twisters

As a huge fan of 1996's Twister, I am ready for more. More twisters.

Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story

Is 2024 the year we finally see Jerry Seinfeld's film about the origins of Pop-Tarts for Netflix? I sure hope so.

Wolfs

Jon Watts writes and directs this psychological action-thriller starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

Patricia Arquette and Bill Pullman in Lost Highway (David Lynch, 1997)

Screenplay: David Lynch, Barry Gifford. Cinematography: Peter Deming. Production design: Patricia Norris. Film editing: Mary Sweeney. Music: Angelo Badalamenti. David Lynch's Lost Highway is a kind of fantasia on film noir themes: shady ladies, ruthless gangsters, morally compromised protagonists, and so on. Its story doesn't play out against a background of supposed "normality," the way Lynch's TV series Twin Peaks or his films Blue Velvet (1986) and Mulholland Dr. (2001) do. In the first two, Lynch plumbs the dark depths that lie below the cheerful surface of small towns, and he opens Mulholland Dr. with the sunny, naive optimism of Naomi Watts's character as she arrives in Los Angeles, ready to make it in the movies. Lost Highway is dark from the start, though not without moments of humor: When Fred Madison (Bill Pullman) and his wife, Renee (Patricia Arquette), receive the first mysterious videotape, which shows only the exterior of their house, they assume it came from a real estate agent. Things get darker from then on, until finally a tape arrives that shows Fred standing over Renee's body. He is quickly tried and sentenced to death, and just as quickly somehow morphs, while in his jail cell, into someone else: an auto mechanic, some years younger than Fred, named Pete Dayton (Balthazar Getty). Released from prison, since he's clearly not Fred Madison and the police have nothing to hold Pete on, he returns home to his parents (Gary Busey and Lucy Butler) and to his job at a garage, where he works on the cars owned by a Mr. Eddy (Robert Loggia). He gets involved with Mr. Eddy's mistress, Alice (played by a blond Arquette -- Renee was a redhead), and eventually winds up having sex with Alice in the desert and morphing back into Fred, who ends the film on the run from the police after killing Mr. Eddy. Oh, there's also a mysterious figure played by a heavily made-up Robert Blake, and some other bits of Lynchian enigma. In short, Lost Highway starts weird and gets weirder, like a nightmare from which there's no hope of waking. Unfortunately, as played by Pullman, Fred is a bland protagonist who barely registers before his transformation into Pete, a character to which Getty gives a bit more substance. The best work in the movie is done by the ever-reliable Loggia, who has a wonderful scene in which Mr. Eddy takes his revenge on a driver who was tailgating him. But the film has the perversity of Blue Velvet and the narrative disjunctions of Mulholland Dr. without the wit and cinematic finesse of either. I think it suffers from its lack of roots in an identifiable reality, or even the caricature of reality in those films.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (Cinema - 5 Settembre)

Presentato fuori concorso all'81esima edizione del Festival di Venezia, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice è l'attesissimo sequel del classico del 1988 diretto da Tim Burton, che qui torna nuovamente dietro la macchina da presa. Con il ritorno di volti noti del primo capitolo, come Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder e Catherine O'Hara, e l'esordio di nuovi interpreti, come la giovane Jenna Ortega e i veterani Willem Defoe, Danny DeVito e Monica Bellucci, il film promette di riproporre le atmosfere cupe e grottesche che hanno caratterizzato le vicende di Beetlejuice trentasei anni fa e, a giudicare dalla buonissima accoglienza ricevuta a Venezia, possiamo aspettarci un film estremamente divertente.

Slow Horses 4 (Apple TV+ - 4 Settembre)

Partita come serie snobbata, Slow Horses si sta pian piano ritagliando un posto nel panorama televisivo attuale, anche grazie alle recenti nomination agli Emmy di quest'anno. La quarta stagione riprenderà dalla conclusione della precedente e vedrà Jackson Lamb e il suo team far fronte alla perdita di Catherine Standish e affrontare un problema riguardante un'altro membro, il quale sembra essere più grave del previsto. Se avete amato le precedenti stagioni, questa non potete perderla.

The Perfect Couple (Netflix - 5 Settembre)

Una cosa è certa: Nicole Kidman ama che si parli di lei. Fresca di vittoria a Venezia per la sua performance in Babygirl, la Kidman è nuovamente protagonista, stavolta in TV, per la miniserie The Perfect Couple. Una serie che narra di un imminente matrimonio e di un cadavere che rovina tutto, un evento che sicuramente porterà alla luce segreti e intrighi, di cui è impossibile fare a meno.

The Old Man 2 (FX - 12 Settembre 2024)

Dopo il buonissimo successo della prima stagione (disponibile in Italia su Disney+) e le riprese rimandate a causa del doppio sciopero, The Old Man torna con una seconda stagione che prevede più azione e adrenalina e riprenderà le vicende dei personaggi di Jeff Bridges e John Lithgow a seguito dell'intensissimo finale della scorsa stagione. Speriamo che arrivi presto anche in Italia.

Agatha All Along (Disney+ - 18 Settembre)

Il Marvel Cinematic Universe torna in TV con Agatha All Along, spin-off di WandaVision incentrato su Agatha Harkness, ancora una volta interpretata da Kathryn Hahn. In una serie di situazioni grottesche e che omaggiano il thriller di stampo investigativo, Agatha si ritroverà a unire le forze con un ragazzo misterioso per poter riacquistare ciò che ha perduto. Sarà il primo buon prodotto televisivo Marvel dopo tanto tempo? Noi speriamo di sì.

The Penguin (HBO - 19 Settembre [USA], Now - 20 Settembre [Italia])

The Batman di Matt Reeves ha riportato un barlume di speranza all'interno dell'universo cinematografico DC e un'espansione di tale universo narrativo, che, ricordiamo, non avrà a che vedere con quello di James Gunn, non può che far piacere. The Penguin rivedrà l'irriconoscibile e bravissimo Colin Farrell riprendere i panni di Oswald Cobblepot, il quale dovrà ricostituire il proprio prestigio a seguito degli eventi del film di Reeves e ci mostrerà il lato più criminale di Gotham City. Non possiamo che essere curiosi al riguardo.

From 3 (MGM+ - 22 Settembre [USA], Paramount+ - 4 Ottobre [Italia])

Una delle serie mystery più chiacchierate del momento sta per tornare, pronta a darci nuovi grattacapi e si spera anche delle risposte. Stiamo parlando di From, la serie con protagonista Harold Perrineau, che tornerà negli schermi statunitensi il 22 Settembre, mentre l'Italia dovrà attendere fino alla prima settimana di Ottobre per scoprire se Tabitha ha davvero lasciato la cittadina e per capire come gli altri protagonisti dovranno comportarsi a seguito delle varie sfide finora affrontate. Speriamo che ci terrà incollati allo schermo.

An Indigenous Present proposes that a book can be a space for community engagement through the transcultural gathering of more than sixty contemporary Indigenous and Native artists. Published by BIG NDN Press and Delmonico Books in 2023, An Indigenous Present was conceived of and edited by Mississippi Choctaw and Cherokee artist Jeffrey Gibson (b. 1972) over the course of nearly two decades. 

In Gibson’s own words, “An Indigenous Present celebrates the work of visual artists, musicians, poets, choreographers, designers, filmmakers, performance artists, architects, collectives, and writers whose work offers fresh starting lines for Native and Indigenous art. But the book does not attempt comprehensiveness. Rather, those included here are makers I admire, have collaborated with or been inspired by, and who’ve challenged my thinking. . . . These artists and what they make will guide us to Indigenous futurities authored by us in unabashedly Indigenous ways.”  

An Indigenous Present features over 400 pages of color photographs, poetry, essays, and interviews resulting in a stunning visual experience for readers and a shift towards more inclusive art systems. On the following weekend, Saturday, March 11, Wednesday and Scream VI star Jenna Ortega will take to Studio 8H and will host the series. Joining her in the episode will be musical guest The 1975, their second time appearing on the show. It's not super common for active athletes to host Saturday Night Live, with J.J. Watt in 2020 being the most recent to take it on. In the past Eli Manning and Peyton Manning have hosted the series, with other examples including LeBron James, Michael Phelps, Ronda Rousey, Lance Armstrong, and Tom Brady. Considering SNL's penchant for having surprise guests appear on the series that are related to the host, Kelce bringing along some of his fellow Chiefs players seems like a no-brainer.
