Compost Bedded Pack Barns Better for Cows

Commonly known as simply “compost dairy barns,” a compost bedded pack dairy barn is a form of dairy cow housing that forgoes the individual stall and concrete alleyway structures standard for freestyle barn designs. Instead, compost barns are open-air with ample space, and regularly refreshed with new, soft bedding for the dairy cows that inhabit them, typically made of sawdust or fine wood shavings. In 2018, the Magazine Dairy Herd Management produced an article in which specialists from the University of Missouri suggested compost barns provide dairy cows with a healthier, happier existence, resulting in greater milk production. 

The soft bedding of sawdust or other fine wood shavings helps protect cows against injuries to feet and legs, as commonly seen in dairy barns with concrete or hard dirt floors. 

Tilling the sawdust floors of the barns one to two times per year also allows operators to eventually combine the sawdust and animal waste into valuable compost, useful for fertilizing cropland. As an added bonus, the compost barn reduces dairy odor compared to other methods of manure storage.
