It's Jeff
Wanda Maximoff x Reader
Genre: Fluff
Warnings: Talks of experimenting on people/animals
Word count: 1485
Summary: You and Wanda bond with an unlikely new acquaintance
A/N: Hello! To keep my streak alive I have fulfilled this request. To be honest, this was a long time coming because I've been wanting to get an ongoing Jeff series going with Wanda and R. Consider this the first of many for this little group - if you have any ideas for any future parts please send them in! This isn't as good as I'd have liked it to be because this is probably the quickest I've written a fic. Regardless, I hope you like it and share any thoughts you have 🙂
After getting back from a single person two day mission away you now find yourself in the medbay not knowing where else you should have gone.
A check-up was imminent, not for yourself, you were fine, it was for… something else.
Otherwise, normally, you would have gone straight to Wanda to show you were back and safe.
Wanda would understand why. Until you remember the nickname you have for her - 'Wanda the Worrier'.
You mentally shake your head. She'll be fine with this.
Totally fine…
Hopefully.
Currently you are standing beside something you found in what seemed to be a research lab. It wasn't your intention to bring it- him home but the pout and sad eyes he gave you before passing out had you carrying the creature out with you before you knew it.
By now a total of three different types of doctor had looked at him, all as perplexed as the previous.
"I've never seen anything like it," Dr Cho concluded after a few minutes of looking him over, using her pen to push at the fin behind his head. She made her way into the room voluntarily when she overheard some rumors of something that could only be described as vicious with big teeth and claws.
"Jeff," you say, seemingly randomly getting Dr Cho to snap her head up at you quizzically.
"His name, I mean," you pause looking back at the still sleeping shark looking animal on the table. "It's Jeff." Dr Cho then squints her eyes wondering how you would know that. "That's what I've been calling him at least. There was a cage in the room I found him in with a code on it - J344."
Before Dr Cho can speak again, both of your attentions are pulled to the door as Wanda barges into the room, the worry on her face dissipating when she sees that you are okay.
As she makes her way to you, taking your face in her hands while she looks you over she expresses what is on her mind, "I thought you were just getting checked, why are you taking so long? You look fine."
Wordlessly, you look to your side for Wanda to follow your gaze, "I found this little guy."
Wanda gasps at the lump of what she thinks is an animal. She would have thought it was a dead shark if not for the steady rise and fall of his body and the limbs protruding his torso, "What is that?" Her accent peeks out from her sudden reaction.
"I saw something on a clipboard that said 'land-shark'. I guess that explains the legs and how he's able to breathe," you reply. You begin to wonder if he can breathe underwater too. Does he need to be kept in water?
Before anyone can question anything further, the landshark begins to stir. The sound of a whine coming from his direction.
He rolls onto his back, not knowing he has an audience, stretching. When he is done he rolls over so that he lands on his feet, your arm protectively goes around Wanda as you step forward while the other two in the room take a step back alarmed.
"Jeff?" You experiment.
You see his head tilt and hear a confused exclamation before he turns on his feet. When he sees three sets of unfamiliar eyes on him he stumbles two steps back landing on his butt with wide eyes, mouth agape in surprise.
When you see his frightened face you take a slow step forward with your hand out in front of you, speaking slowly, "It's okay, buddy. We're not going to hurt you."
Wanda is gripping onto your arm not wanting you to get closer but you whisper that it is okay before turning your head back to the animal.
Jeff's resolve softens when he realises it is you. The one he saw before he knocked out.
His head tilts again, mouth opening wide in a smile, his tongue falling out of the corner.
You furrow your eyebrows at the action, confused as to why he hasn't pounced or attacked anyone in the room. The closer you get, the more the ladies behind you tense, "I think he can understand us."
Finally, your hand lands on his head. You hear the sighs of relief from behind you. As you rub his smooth skin he vibrates excitedly. You scoff at the reaction, "Aww, you just want a friend, little buddy?" He replies by laying on his back so you can rub his belly making you chuckle. "He's cute."
Apprehensively, the other two occupants move closer to make their own assessments of the little shark wiggling around.
You prompt the witch and the doctor to try if they want to. They giggle too after they hear a long satisfied cry when they take over petting him.
Dr Cho stops after a little while saying she may know someone who specialises in animals and how they might be able to help. She leaves the room after fiddling with her phone to make a call.
When Wanda pulls her hand back, you notice the grin on her face. It grows into a smile when Jeff sits again with his tongue out panting, "You like him," you extend your words teasing her.
"Yes, he is very cute," Wanda smiles, glancing at you. She goes to pet his head this time, her thumb rubbing in circles as she coos at him, asking if he knows how cute he is.
Without Wanda meaning too, she gets a peek into Jeff's mind. Flashes of his history pass in her mind in quick succession.
In the next second you see Jeff frown looking upset. You are about to ask him what is wrong when you hear Wanda speak up from next to you, "Y/n…" she says, sadly with tears in her eyes.
When you see the red dissipate from her natural green you realise what happened. "What did you see?"
Wanda turns her head back to the shark, she moves her hand to scratch beneath his chin to cheer him up.
When she feels him begin to vibrate again she asks if he wants to explore the room, he nods his head and the two of you watch him as Wanda explains with a teary expression. "They experimented on him."
She goes on to talk about different tests and serums several doctors tried on him. All the poking and prodding he went through took Wanda back when she was a prisoner of theirs.
It took a long time to convince Wanda she was a prisoner, and not a volunteer, held by Hydra.
When Dr Cho returns you relay the information to her. She talks about how her contact is busy and they will not be able to come for a few weeks.
"The question remains; What do we do with him?" Dr Cho finishes.
The three of you turn to him, seeing him attack a stethoscope, his paws holding it in place as he chews on the rubber section in the middle.
"We have cages big enough somewhere in storage. I guess I could fish one out," Dr Cho thinks aloud.
"No!" Both you and Wanda say in unison, hearing a 'mrr?' from the side getting the attention of Jeff. When you smile at him he goes back to his previous activity.
You then look at each other and you speak first, "Are you okay with him staying in our room?" Wanda simply nods, eyes welling up again remembering what she saw.
After a bit more small talk with the doctor, you go through a plan of keeping him until at least next week. You confirm with Wanda you will introduce him to the rest of the team in the morning. Once that is all sorted you let Wanda call for Jeff, asking if he would like to see where he will stay for a while.
He nods his head happily then trots over to you.
There is a lot to learn about the little land shark like; what he can eat, if he needs to be regularly exposed to water, how he sleeps but you figure you will take it one step at a time.
While Wanda gets Jeff accustomed to the room you find some spare blankets to set up a corner for his bed.
But when night-time rolls around neither you or Wanda can turn Jeff away from your bed. Before the two of you can even confirm to him that it is okay for him to be settled between you, he is already asleep snoring away.
Looking up in Wanda's direction you see her already smiling at you. You scoff and easily smile back as your hands meet on top of Jeff, intertwining your fingers.
You figure you can remind him where his bed is another time.

I guess everyone was busy on their own missions this time. Jeff's mission was to look after Natasha, even if he was making the fort for himself to begin with hehehe
R's t-shirt on the Blahaj was really sweet, it must be difficult for them all when they have to spend time apart
Stormy Weather
Summary: While you’re struggling to get home from a month-long mission, Jeff and Natasha seek comfort from missing you.
Pairing: Natasha Romanoff x Reader
Word Count: 1408
Warnings: None
A/N: Hiii, sorry I know I haven’t been posting much lately. I’ve had so many ideas, but I can’t seem to get them written in a way I actually like. Plus, my motivation to write only ever seems to come when I’m at work and can’t write 😭 I’ll try my best to start posting more regularly again but no promises, thank you all for sticking around :) comments and reblogs are much appreciated :)
This was also based on an ao3 comment from a fic MONTHS ago, that I just got round to actually writing 😭
Part of The Jeff Fictional Universe (you don’t need to read the others to understand)
—————————————————
Natasha rubbed her eyes harshly. Staring at the screen day after day was taking its toll. 30 days this would be; 30 days since you had gone on a mission that should have only been two weeks.
There were complications, and she knew you didn’t have the time or the means to contact her directly. But she was exhausted, barely sleeping, needing to be there in case you *did* manage to get in contact.
Natasha knew she couldn’t have gone with you. No matter how much it would have alleviated her worries, she had other priorities. Working on the desk side of the same mission would be enough for her.

Welcome to the Team
Wanda Maximoff x Reader x Jeff the landshark
Summary: Jeff meets the team
A/N: Here is part 2 of my Jeff AU. In celebration of today being a year since I first posted a fic there will be a double bill of Jeff! The final 1 year celebration request includes Jeff too so you can expect that later on. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this part, it's practically a crack!fic 😂

It is unusual for everyone to be sitting in the lounge area on a random Friday afternoon. But you have put it off for long enough so it is time to finally rip off the band-aid.
You are standing facing the group of heroes who are all looking at you expectedly with Wanda standing right behind you. You look over your shoulder and see her give you an encouraging smile, waiting for you to start talking.
Taking a breath, you begin. "Okay. I know you're all wondering why we've asked you here today." And before you can get anywhere the Avengers must think this is the cue to start a guessing game.
"Wanda's pregnant!" Tony exclaims.
Some of the quicker thinkers widen their eyes and reflexively look at you.
You point at him to quickly shut down the thought, "No."
"Really? There have been some weird noises coming from your room lately," Sam thinks aloud.
Once again you are stopped before you can comment.
"You're moving out together?" Bucky asks.
You're about to decline the accusation but then they all come flooding in.
"You finally proposed?" Natasha questions.
"Wanda proposed?" Steve opposes.
"Oh wow, I really thought it would be you to pop the question, Y/n. What a twist," Carol, who you don't even know why she is here, says.
"You got a dog?" Peter speaks with a hopeful look in his eye.
"A cat maybe?" Bucky decides to add his own input. Along with Bruce who follows with, "Perhaps a rabbit?"
You turn to see Wanda amused by the whole thing. Turning back around, you have to raise your voice to be heard, "QUIET!" This manages to restore some order to the meeting you called.
"Thank you," you relax. "None of you are right. Actually I guess Peter, Bucky and Bruce were close."
You see Peter raise his hand for a fist bump but Bruce mistakes it for a high five so it turns into an awkward closed hand around a fist situation. Bucky is too far from either of them to celebrate the small victory.
"There is a new addition to the compound, his name is Jeff," you announce.
"Who names a hamster 'Jeff'?" Peter asks.
"No way, it's going to be a parrot. Or some kind of bird right?" Clint 'The Hawkeye' Barton guesses.
Once again this starts off a new guessing game - What animal could it be?
"Monkey," "Raccoon," "Fox," "Guinea pig," "Chameleon," "Duck!"
You begin to question your life choices, how did you ever end up in this situation? Maybe you should have set this gathering up like a game show at least then it might have been fun for you too.
Instead of stopping them this time you take a seat until they hopefully tire themselves out.
"No, no. From the noises I heard it's definitely a goat," Sam remarks.
You decide it's hopeless when the discussion doesn't look like it will cease. Giving up the waiting game you nod your head to Wanda rolling your eyes, you can tell she is holding in her laughter for your sake.
She leaves the area and after a few moments she returns with Jeff. It is only when the pitter patter sound of footsteps close in do they realise you are no longer standing directly in front of them. Instead you are next to Wanda with a new being between you.
You could hear a pin drop now that everyone's gazes are fixed to the little guy.
"Everybody, this is Jeff," you introduce your new roommate.
The attention seems to make Jeff nervous, you don't know if he has ever had this many eyes on him. Possibly when he was captive in the lab. You realise this could be traumatic for him so you guide him to step behind you.
His two front feet grip your leg as he peers round to see everyone still looking at him.
Wanda sits on the floor close to him with a hand resting on the fin on his back. "It's okay Jeff, they're all friendly," she reassures him.
"Is that a fish with legs?" Clint asks, "Oh man, I was way off."
"He's a shark," you say matter-of-factly. When you see everyone's expression change to a worried or frightened one you clarify further in hopes to calm their nerves. "A landshark!"
It doesn't work.
"Y/n, what the hell is a landshark? You better start explaining and fast," Natasha all but threatens you. You can see one of her hands has disappeared behind her back meaning she is defensively readying a knife behind her.
"He's not harmful, he's really friendly," you say. Then you remember some things you have read about sharks so are quick to add, "Also sharks are misconstrued as being vicious when they're actually not. They get a bad rep even though they're basically puppies of the ocean. Did you know, more people are killed each year by coconu-"
"Y/n!" Natasha interrupts.
"Right," you say, gathering your thoughts and glancing down at him. "He's nice and friendly and really playful. A bit of a clutz too. We've had him hidden in our room for about two weeks now."
This seems to bring Tony's attention away from the shark to you, "Oh really? And you didn't think to mention this to the person who pays for everything around here?"
"We were going to tell you after the first night he stayed but didn't bother because we didn't think he would be here for this long. Dr Cho was trying to get a specialist in to take a look at him but there were delays," Wanda momentarily takes over for you.
"Oh, so Cho knows. That's great," Tony comments sarcastically, "as well as the specialist, right?"
"Yes. Plus two others who work with the specialist," you add much to Tony's dismay.
Jeff seems to be a bit more comfortable because he has come out from behind you. He tugs on your pant leg wanting to be picked up by you so you oblige and feedback to the group what you have found out so far.
"They finally looked him over a couple of days ago. No one knows where he has come from or why he looks the way he does. The working theory is that he was experimented on which fits with what Wanda saw in a flash the first time she came in contact with him."
Jeff starts squirming in your arms so you nod to Wanda to continue while you try to settle Jeff by whispering words of affirmation to him. Telling him none of these people will hurt him as you rub up and down his back.
"From the tests and interacting with him so far he seems to be able to understand us and in addition to being able to breathe air he can breathe underwater too. The more time we spend with him the easier it has been to communicate," Wanda finishes, while she scratches under Jeff's chin which helps calm his nerves.
Everyone looks on in silence as Jeff pulls away from you slightly. You speak in a low tone asking if he wants to say hi to the team. Which, reluctantly, he agrees to.
There is a strong bond between you, even if it hasn't been too long since you found him, so he knows he can trust anyone you want to introduce him to.
You go to place him on the ground but he whines a little while clutching your shirt. Instead, you stand back up and he turns in your arms facing the expecting crowd.
He raises his little hand in a wave speaking in a small voice, "Mrr."
In a second everybody's eyes soften and you hear a collective 'aww' sound out.
Maybe you should have started with this.
They are all about to rush over but you stop them from doing so with a hand out in front of you while taking a step back. Wanda moves swiftly standing between the incoming horde and Jeff.
"One at a time," she requests.
Peter makes his way over first and greets Jeff introducing himself.
It definitely must be a sight, all of this.
A young couple holding a shark as if he is a baby. It is only inevitable that someone asks, "So, is Jeff like your child then?"
And of course that person has to be Natasha.
…
The Jeff you are looking at now is unrecognisable to the Jeff from half an hour ago. He has lossened right up.
After everyone introduced themselves Peter decided to show Jeff his web slingers and, against yours and Wanda's wishes, hung Jeff upside down from the ceiling. The excited noise and wide smile was enough to make you step back. But not too far back just enough, in case you needed to catch him.
After that he spent some time with Carol who showed him a glowing fist. Natasha smirked at Wanda and you as she twirled a knife around her fingers, Bucky doing the same which turned into a contest.
When they weren't looking you picked him up and moved him away from the crazy movements.
As the only member with kids Clint simply spoke to him like he was a baby, Steve said he didn't have any tricks for him but maybe one day he would show Jeff his shield. Sam asked Jeff if he wanted to pet Redwing which he happily did.
Even now Tony has been playing tricks with him, making a coin disappear then reappear from behind Jeff's ear. He had to borrow a coin from someone first, it would have been more surprising if Tony had any small change on his person to begin with.
Next is Bruce who tells Jeff there is someone else he should meet then transforms into the Hulk. Jeff looks at the green giant in wonder then puts his arms up to be picked up so he can be the tallest in the room. When Hulk sees Jeff he crouches down so he is eye level with Jeff, sniffing and surveying him. He chuckles, calls Jeff 'a puny baby' then picks him up and places the landshark on his head.
Shortly after everyone takes their leave. Clint is on his way home to his family, Natasha goes to train with Bucky following behind her. A Hulk-less Bruce returns to the lab with Tony. Steve, Sam and Carol are discussing a mission they are assigned to lead and Peter says he has some homework he needs to finish.
"What a day huh Jeff?" You breathe out, exhausted. Jeff looks at you like a small child while trotting around, jumping on the couches and back onto the floor excited about all the new friends he has made.
"I think Jeff is going to be just fine here," Wanda says to you as you both watch him, side by side.
"Hello good people of Earth!" You hear a familiar loud voice sound from the entrance disturbing your peace. And when he makes it in front of you, he is his usual happy self.
"Hi Thor... What are you doing here?" You ask, confused.
"I'm here for the meeting, of course," Thor says in his cheery voice.
"I didn't know you were on the mailing list," you say a little tiredly trying to think back to the email you sent out.
"I didn't know he knew how to check his email," you hear Wanda's side comment next to you.
"Well, I am the strongest Avenger after all," Thor boasts, "I should be here for all the little talks and what nots."
"Right," you say a little unsurely. "Err, the meeting is over now but it was to introduce a new resident to the compound."
You see him spot Jeff who peeks his head over the backrest between you and Wanda. He is looking at Thor in awe with his mouth agape much like he did when he saw Hulk.
As he climbs over the back rest you stand and Jeff stands next to you in front of Thor his head tilting back as he trails his eyes upwards from the hammer Thor is holding to his face.
"This is Jeff," Wanda says.
"Jeff the landshark," you add.
Thor has seen plenty of creatures in his lifetime so it's no surprise he doesn't react in a negative way. "Oh, how wonderful! Welcome to the team, little landshark!" Thor's voice booms excitedly.
You don't get a chance to tell Thor that Jeff is not a part of the team, only that he is staying with you in the compound because, before you know it, he lifts Jeff onto his shoulder and walks away with him.
Sighing heavily you place your hands on your hips when you hear Thor talking about a battle, going into excruciating details about how he killed a group of enemies. You are a little wary of how Jeff is going to respond to the gory details of war.
Wanda stands and moves behind you. She wraps her arms around your waist, kissing your shoulder. "He-" Wanda was about to say something but is cut off short when you both hear an excited squeal from Jeff in the distance so she rests her chin and giggles against you instead.
"I was going to say he's going to love whatever story Thor brings up, but that's kind of obvious now," she says, smiling into your shoulder.
You sigh again, "I know. But now he's going to want us to talk about all the fights we've endured and I don't think it's good for him."
Next, you hear some scuffling making you cringe because it sounds as though some equipment has fallen and crashed to the ground. Not long later you hear the sound of fast little footsteps making their way in your direction.
Then you hear Thor shout, "JEFF! GIVE THAT BACK."
Well this can't be good.
Before you can move from your spot Jeff runs past you with Mjolnir clutched in his mouth. Wanda has stepped beside you and when you glance at each other you see she holds the same shocked expression as you.
You both then turn to see Jeff's figure running out of the entrance doors. Wanda is clearly amused but you speak aloud the question on your mind, "How is he worthy and I'm not?" You ask, insulted.
Wanda wraps her arms around your neck, her fingers playing with your hair, "It's okay honey, you don't need a hammer telling you anything I don't already know."
She is leaning in to kiss you but a new voice enters your ears.
"Sestra! Come look! There's a dog in a shark costume out here!" Pietro exclaims, "And he's holding a fake hammer too!"
It is official.
Jeff has met the whole team.

Jeff the Avenger
Wanda Maximoff x Reader x Jeff the landshark
Summary: A meeting before Jeff's first mission
A/N: This is it! The final request from the 1 year celebration! I hope you enjoy this second helping of Jeff! Also, I guess I have a thing for everyone sitting around talking about the funny moments??
Prompt: "They're bringing up my history, but you weren't even listening."

The day has come to see how Jeff fairs in a mission.
Well, this is the day before that day.
You and Wanda were against the decision initially but Steve went through the idea, of Jeff being a distraction, with you. Both of you would be in the same vicinity as Jeff to ensure his safety while he simply played dead to distract some guards. This way the team could use the element of surprise to their advantage.
Wanda went through the plan with Jeff at length, explaining the importance of needing to stay very still. She even got him to practise a few times and when he did well every single time, you were convinced. Plus, Jeff was excited to be included and you have learnt it is hard to say no to his sulky expression.
He trotted into the conference room with his nose in the air like he owned the place. Everyone greeted him warmly with fist bumps and high fives which he happily accepted. He was being treated like a celebrity and Jeff being Jeff basked in it like it was normal.
It has been an hour and a half now that the group has been gathered to go through the mission plans. Changes have been made wherever needed for efficiency and safety.
The meeting is winding down so everyone is making digs at each other where they have made silly mistakes in the past.
While everyone is fixated on Pietro and Clint talking about a time where Pietro left Clint in a forest somewhere while he flew away, Wanda checks on Jeff. She finds him distracted by something on the ground on the other side of the room. He seems to be following the patterns on the carpeted floor.
You and Wanda weren't sure why he needed to be here. In the end you didn't mind because it meant you could keep an eye on him. And again, he was happy to be included. Wanda thought this would bore him but he seems to be busying himself with various things in the room.
The current memory everyone is fixated on is when Sam had a malfunction with his wings that kept him grounded instead of being able to fly away from a group of enemies. His 'gotta fly' comment was heard by the whole team and they have never let him forget it since they rescued him that day.
When Sam whispers 'shit' under his breath, the ridicule going on longer than he would like, it doesn't go unnoticed. The spotlight moves on to Steve, which he is thankful for. Everyone yells out 'language!' and they point their fingers in either Sam or Steve's direction. Sam manages to evade it by pointing fingers at Steve too.
There is a light-hearted atmosphere in the room with all the team banter. That is, until Tony speaks. "As long as Wanda and Pietro don't take the villain's side again," he laughs.
The reaction in the room is mixed with a few people shocked he would say something like that and others holding in laughter, Pietro being one of them. He knows his sister best, so is waiting for… something to happen.
It wasn't official or anything, more like a silent mutual understanding, but the twins being on Ultron's side would never be bought up.
The tension is broken when Wanda doesn't take it lying down, "As long as someone in here doesn't make a killer robot, I'm sure we'll be fine," she says flatly.
After a beat of silence laughter erupts and Tony is now the centre of attention.
She hears you scoff in the seat next to her but it is clear Wanda isn't happy. She sees you turn your head and you must notice so you slip your hand into hers making her relax a little. For some extra comfort you squeeze to reassure her. The team is too busy taking shots at Tony, who is stunned and speechless for once, to notice.
Wanda still feels disappointed though, how could he bring up something like that in front of Jeff? What must he think? What kind of role model does this make her?
Steve finally announces that everyone should be getting on with getting ready for the mission tomorrow, concluding the meeting.
Looking around the room Wanda finds Jeff looking behind the water dispenser, his eyes trying to see where the cables attached to it lead. By the time she gets over there he is balancing on his back two feet while the other two are leaning against it so he can shake the machine. The water sloshing around must be funny to him because he has an amused smile on his face.
"Jeff," Wanda stretches out his name with a raised eyebrow and a smirk playing on her lips as she crouches down to speak to him, "you shouldn't be doing that. What if it falls?"
Jeff smiles wider, stepping away, planting all four feet on the ground, "Mrr!"
"You would like that?" Wanda asks, to confirm she understands correctly.
A nod from a very happy Jeff makes her chuckle, "Of course you would, you little rascal," Wanda says playfully, rubbing Jeff's head.
Seconds later Wanda's expression falls, making Jeff widen his eyes, curious as to why she looks so down all of a sudden. "I'm sorry you had to hear about my past, I hope it doesn't make you see me differently," she says, guiltily.
"Mrr…?" Jeff tilts his head, the confusion on his face is clear.
Her hand stills and rests comfortably on top of him. "What Tony said before," Wanda explains, nodding her head backwards to where everyone was sitting not long ago.
But Jeff shakes his head confirming he didn't hear whatever it is she is talking about.
Wanda is flabbergasted, "They're bringing up my history, but you weren't even listening."
Jeff excitedly shakes his head back and forth, when he sees a smile reappear on Wanda's face. He gets more excited when her hand continues its previous movements.
A few moments later you show up by Wanda's side and join in with rubbing Jeff's stomach who is now laying on his back with his tongue hanging out of his mouth as he lays there.
"What did you think of the meeting Jeff?" You ask but it falls on deaf ears as the landshark is too blissed out to even notice you.
"I think we've lost him," Wanda comments beside you, making you chuckle.
You ask Wanda how she is feeling now and she confirms she is fine. You don't question it further because you can tell by the shine in her eyes, when she looks back at Jeff, she is telling the truth.
Wanda follows your lead when you move your hand away effectively stopping Jeff's comfort. He grumpily opens his eyes wondering why you would deprive him like this.
"C'mon Jeff. We've got to get ready for tomorrow. For the mission, remember?" You remind him.
This seems to pick his mood up because before you know it Jeff is on his feet and has already left the room.
Hand in hand you and Wanda trail behind him. "We'll have to tell him he'll be rewarded. I think it will motivate him to do a good job tomorrow," Wanda says. You nod to the suggestion and smile to yourself. She must just want to reward him regardless, you think.
Jeff is speeding off through the hallways and when you hear a loud bang you look down the hall to see he has crashed into a janitor's closet. Racing over there you see him surrounded by cleaning tools and a bucket on his head.
A collective sigh is let out, half out of relief because Jeff is uninjured and the other half out of annoyance knowing you will have to sort this mess out. Maybe it is a good time to teach him how to clean up after himself.
As the three of you work as a team to reorganise everything, you go through the importance of putting things back where they belong and why Jeff needs to be more careful around different types of equipment. He nods along with the occasional 'Mrr' to show he understands. Wanda finds it cute because it is obvious he wants to do you proud.
Wanda places the last fallen broom back in its place and before either of you can say anything else Jeff has once again raced off.
Your shoulders drop, defeated as you begin your walk again. "I think we will need to go through it all with him again," Wanda giggles, linking her arm in yours.
The closer you get to the corner Jeff has just rounded, you hear another crash. This time Natasha's shout follows the incident, "Jeff! What have you done?" It makes you stop dead in your tracks. Yoy then close your eyes and let out a disappointed breath.
Wanda scrunches her nose. "We should practise his role for tomorrow again as well. You know, just to be sure."

[Little do you know just how much that’s going to come back and bite you in the ass.] - Oh man, I hope this is literal lol
...Merry Christmas?
natasha romanoff x gn!reader (ft. jeff the landshark)
word count: 640
warnings: i curse twice, sorry
A/N: welcome to jeffmas!!!! i have decided (if all goes to plan) i will be posting a holiday jeff fic every wednesday of december! a very special thanks to my co-president of the jeff cult, @wolferine , for the inspiration and the support to write for jeff. i hope you like it :)

The holiday season always seems to make everything ten times more stressful than it needs to be. You can’t think of one person who isn’t, at least, a little bit more stressed during the month of December.
It’s with this sentiment you trudge home through the melting snow on the ground. You silently rejoice when your front steps come into view. Your heart picks up speed at the sight of lights inside.
Natasha is home.
She’d been away on a mission for the last week and a half, and you miss her desperately.
As you enter your house, Liho comes up to rub against your ankles. You’re so exhausted and excited at the prospect of seeing Natasha again that your mind doesn’t even register the second cat bed sitting on the floor in the living room.
“Natasha?” you yell into the silence, hoping to locate the redhead.
She peeks her head out of the hall closet, hairs that have fallen loose from her bun flying wildly.
“Oh! Hi, love. What’s up?” she asks you nervously.
“What’s with the tone, Nat. And why are you in the closet?”
“Uh...so, funny story.”
You raise your eyebrow at her.
“Don’t worry about it! Why don’t you go get changed into some comfy clothes, and I’ll be right there.” She flashes you one of her dazzling smiles.
You decide to humor her. Despite being a world-class spy, Natasha is quite bad at surprises when it comes to you. She’s been permanently cut out of the Avengers’ planning committee for your birthday parties.
After changing out of your work clothes, you decide to stop by the kitchen to make something warm to drink. You’re still shivering from your walk home.
You’re shocked out of your thoughts by the wagging shark tail sticking out of your pantry. The shriek that leaves your body is not human.
Natasha softly groans from her spot in the hall. This must be her secret, and you’ve found it before she wanted you to.
“Um, babe? Do you want to explain the fucking shark in our kitchen?” you shout to your girlfriend.
At your voice, the tail turns around. It's attached to a portly shark with four tiny legs. He looks up at you and rubs his face against your ankles just like Liho did. You’re silent as he confidently struts out of the kitchen with a mouthful of your snacks. You watch as he trots over to the second cat bed, that you’re just now noticing, and gets comfortable. Liho seems uncharacteristically unfazed. Natasha is concerned you've gone into shock.
“Natasha?”
“Yes, love?”
“What just happened?” you ask in disbelief.
“...Merry Christmas?”
There are no words in the English language you can think of to respond to this situation. You silently stand there in the kitchen, Natasha nervously wringing her hands, for what feels like hours. The occasional disbelieving glance from you is sent over towards the landshark that’s taken up residence in your living room. Finally, you speak up.
“Does he have a name?”
Natasha breathes a small sigh of relief. She’s not sure that she’s completely out of the dog house, but at least you’re not immediately throwing him out. She mumbles something faintly. You’re not sure you heard her correctly.
“I’m sorry. What?”
“I said his name is Jeff,” she sighs defeatedly.
You bark out a laugh. “That’s the greatest thing I’ve ever heard!”
Natasha’s shoulders finally release the remaining tension. Maybe it’ll be okay after all.
You gather her hand in yours and lead her into the living room. The sight of Liho and Jeff asleep on their respective beds warms your heart. You’ve only known him for a few minutes, but you’re sure you’d do anything for him.
Little do you know just how much that’s going to come back and bite you in the ass.

Take My Hand
Summary: After the proposal in Jeff for Dinner, it's finally time for the wedding, where Jeff will play a role of upmost importance.
Word Count: 4560 Pairing: Natasha Romanoff x Reader Warnings: alcohol intake, quite heavy on the romance (it's a wedding), but mostly just a whole lot of fluff! A/N: hello! this was originally supposed to be a celebration of two years since I posted my first fic here (23rd October 2021) but uhhh, I missed that date, so here's a slightly belated story :) Hope you enjoy! Comments and reblogs greatly appreciated!
Part of The Jeff Fictional Universe (don't need to read the others to understand, but Jeff for Dinner might give some useful backstory)
You hurried through the house with increasing urgency; Clint would be picking you up any minute now and you still needed to get Jeff ready – if only you could find him first. You caught sight of red hair strewn over the sofa and hoped it would be your salvation.
“Love?” you asked. Natasha hummed from her spot, tilting her head back to see you. You smiled. “Have you seen Jeff? We need to be off to whatever worrying thing Clint has planned but I haven’t gotten him ready yet.”
“Yeah he’s in- wait, what do you mean by ‘we’? I thought I was taking Jeff.” Natasha had turned fully now, your soon-to-be-wife giving you her full attention and locking you in her gaze like a deer in headlights.
“I- well- if he hadn’t turned down being Best Man then he would have helped organise this, so I thought it made more sense that he comes with me.”
“But you know how much he loves Yelena. And Wanda.”
“He loves Clint too!... or maybe 'likes' is more appropriate," you corrected based on Natasha's grimace,"but I can still speak with him, so I think he’d have a better time with me.”
“You go get ready,” Natasha instructed, “I’ll find Jeff and we can finish this later on.” She said it so firmly, so definitely, that you nodded and went along with it, forgetting you were already ready until you were back in your bedroom, and by then it was too late.
Natasha’s promise wasn’t a lie as such, but she called Jeff back into the room the moment you went out of earshot, opened her backpack for him to climb in, then hurried outside to where Yelena sat waiting for her in the car. She would discuss it with you later, as promised, but only after Jeff attended her bachelorette party.
“You got Jeff!” greeted the Widows as they entered, an already tipsy Maria yelling it as soon as she saw the landshark enter.
Yelena hadn’t taken them far, only to an apartment she owned in the city, but it was clear the night of drinking and dancing had already begun. Jeff purred cautiously and butted the side of his head against Natasha’s leg; the contents of the party were kept secret from her, which meant neither she nor Jeff knew what to expect as they entered.
It turned out to be a fairly quiet affair, with only a handful of women whom Natasha trusted closely, but it looked set to be an entertaining night: karaoke, copious volumes of alcohol readily available (more entertaining for Yelena and Natasha, as the other women didn’t have the high tolerance that the Widows had trained themselves for) and… a pole… installed right in the middle of Yelena’s living room.
“Is there a reason for that?” Natasha asked.
Yelena smirked, turning away from her sister and heading straight for the bar, “you’ll have to wait and see!”
Jeff purred again, causing Natasha to look down at him: he had placed two hands on the pole and looked up to Natasha for instructions on what to do next. She shook her head. “I’d avoid that, Jeff, you don’t want to know what it’s used for. Maybe in another life, if we had one of our own, I’d teach you… but not here.”
Jeff sighed, but he trusted Natasha’s words and backed away from the pole. The drinking was of no interest to him, even if Yelena had made him a number of landshark-friendly, alcohol-free cocktails. Instead, he headed straight for the machine in the corner; Wanda needed a karaoke partner.
The night took its toll on all of you, so even though you only made it through the front door at 4pm the next day, your mind still wasn't working at its best. Jeff 'mrrrr'd a greeting as he strolled right past you and your head followed the path of the landshark, gears turning in your brain thinking of what you wanted to tell him.
"Were you here all night?" you eventually said.
"Mrrr." He replied: 'No.'
"Then where…" you trailed off, both because Jeff has continued on and because you once again caught sight of red hair peeking out from the edge of the sofa; the pieces finally clicked together.
"You took Jeff then." You went to stand beside the woman before you spoke, knowing her night would have been as rough as yours; you wanted to be careful not to startle her.
She smiled when she saw you were home, then nodded weakly. "Sorry I snuck him out."
"It was for the best." You shook your head slowly as memories of the night before came back in flashes. Natasha lifts her legs up so that you can take a seat, before gently setting them back down, this time over your lap; she ignores your raised eyebrow and shuffles back to her lounging position. Her focus stayed on your face as you continued: "Clint got a little passive aggressive after a few drinks, over the fact that I asked Jeff to be Best Man before him – having Jeff in attendance would have definitely made things worse." You sigh. "Did he have a good time?"
"I'm pretty sure he duetted 'My Heart Will Go On' with Wanda," Natasha said. She pulled herself up, choosing to rest her head on your shoulder rather than the arm rest; you pulled her closer. "...it was an odd night."
"For both of us," you agreed, "but we made it through. The next party we have will be after we're married. And it'll be a night to remember."
The following week passed with surprising speed; Fury kept Natasha off of missions (lest she be injured or even missing on her wedding day) which allowed you both the free time to prepare the finishing touches and simply spend some time being together.
You hadn't fought during that week, nor grown tired of each other, which left you pretty confident that marrying Natasha would be one of the best decisions of your life – second only to rescuing Jeff, in your opinion.
By the time you bid goodbye to Natasha – letting her friends, family, and teammates take care of her for the night before the wedding – you felt your mind buzzing with excitement, and your eyes drifting to the clock in the hopes that hours would pass within the seconds you took your eyes away from the timekeeping instrument.
"You can't be apart from her for 5 minutes?" a voice said from behind you. You spun quickly, startled by the break in your focus, only to see Steve standing there, his hands in his pockets, with a slight smirk on his face.
At the familiar face, you allowed yourself to relax slightly, shoulders slumping forward and a sharp exhale escaping you. He was still waiting for your answer, so you shook your head and mirrored his 'hands in pocket' stance.
"It's been a long time coming," you attempted to explain, "this last night is just…I'm getting impatient."
Much to your relief, he nodded in understanding and stepped forward to rest a hand on your shoulder. "Our lives are fairly unpredictable; we never know what the next day brings so it can be hard waiting for something when anything can happen in between." Now it was your turn to nod, his words matched your own thoughts well. "Enjoy tonight," he suggested, "Enjoy the peace of having 'Earth's Mightiest Heroes' making sure nothing goes wrong. And after tomorrow you'll have many more great nights with Natasha officially by your side."
"Thank you, Steve"
"Anytime, Y/N/N. I also came to say that you have a visitor from Natasha's side."
You shot your head back up to look at him then, mind taking you through all the possibilities of who it could, until Steve turned to the door and beckoned towards the – previously unnoticed – small, grey nose peeking out.
"Jeff!" you cheered, and he switched from a trot to a full run into your arms. His tail wagged ferociously as he rubbed his nose against your whole body, purring contentedly. You shot Steve a smile and a silent thanks when you caught him leaving the room, then it was just you and Jeff.
"How have you been, Jeff? What have you been up to? Are you feeling ready?"
"Mrrrrr!" he squealed, holding two hands in front of him in a clear sign for you to slow down.
"Okay, sorry, one at a time. How are things going over there?"
"Mrrrr. Mrrrrr, mrrrrr."
"Oh…right."
Crisp air greeted you from the second you stepped outside, only growing colder and gustier as you left the shelter of the building and headed silently towards the body of water – and the figure standing beside it.
"You know, I'm not supposed to see my bride before the wedding."
"That's an archaic rule."
"I thought you wanted a traditional wedding; that comes with traditions."
"A traditional wedding wouldn't have a landshark as a ring bearer."
You looked down at Jeff.
"Mrrrr."
"You're very wanted here, Jeff."
"Mrr."
You turned back to face the pond, your eyes tracing the edges of its still reflection. "Jeff would be very busy if all weddings required a landshark."
Natasha hummed her agreement, before finally turning to you, rather than the glistening water. "You can look, you know, if you're comfortable. You won't even catch my eye in the reflection."
"I wasn't sure if you wanted me to look, or…"
When her hand found yours, you did finally look. You took in her appearance through the distorted ripples of water before shifting to see her original beauty. She smiled, and her hand squeezed yours in encouragement.
"I'm glad you got the message; I wasn't sure if Jeff understood it enough to pass the message on."
"He paraphrased," you said with a shrug, "but I'm getting the hang of deciphering what you actually said out of what he says."
Natasha laughed at that, causing the smile on your own face to grow wider. Until you remembered your concerns from the message. "This… it's not cold feet, is it?"
Her eyes widened and she jumped immediately into reassurances that it was not. "It's more like the opposite. Time seems to be dragging on and I just wanted to see you and make it pass faster, like it always does when I'm with you."
You kissed her then; the sudden motion surprised her initially, but she held you close and smiled sweetly against your lips as soon as it ended. "Steve just convinced me out of doing the exact same thing."
"Guess we're made for each other then."
"I guess we are."
Your fiancée edged forward again, looking to resume the kiss, before a loud mrrr cut her off and had you both pulling back.
"Dude?!"
Natasha rolled her eyes – despite the hint of a smile – and took a gentler approach to the landshark's interruption. "What is it Jeff?"
"Mrrrr."
"He wants to go to bed," you translated, "really, Jeff?"
After a quick scratch of his fin, Natasha stood up and you frowned, knowing what she was going to say. "You should probably take him back."
You inhaled sharply, nodded slowly, and traced your thumb over the ring on her left hand. "I should. And I will, but before that…"
Natasha leant in and pressed a chaste kiss on your lips, grinning as she pulled away. "Go on and take Jeff back then."
"I'll see you tomorrow, my love."
"And for every day after that. No backing out after tomorrow."
"That thought would never even cross my mind"
"Mrrrr!" Jeff interrupted again, this time with his hands wrapped around your ankle to pull you away.
"Yeah okay, okay," you conceded, beginning the short walk to your accommodation for the night, with Jeff by your side. You looked back at Natasha when you were halfway there, only to see that she was still watching the two of you.
She waved you off, mouthing 'go', and you did as you were told.
You couldn't wait for tomorrow to come.
For all your excitement about the day, the nerves were something you felt woefully unprepared for; it was comparable to the feeling of your first mission, only 100 times worse. This wasn't life or death, nor a high-stakes 'anything could go wrong' scenario, yet in a secluded room adjacent to the chapel, with your teammates and your landshark by your side, the energy in your body was indelible.
You channelled it into action, readjusting Jeff's suit lapels for the sixth time since you'd arrived at the venue, then testing him to ensure he knew his role.
He must have breathed a sigh of relief when Clint put his hand on your shoulder, telling you that it was time to go in. Melina smiled – a silent reassurance of your place in their family, even before marriage – then she stepped through the large, oak double doors and led your procession down the aisle. You followed to take your place at the altar, with Clint arriving at your side soon after. The bridesmaids and groomsmen took their seats and, after Yelena had settled, it was Jeff's time to shine.
A chorus of 'awww's resounded as Jeff appeared in the doorway, the giant archway serving well to emphasise his small, lovable stature. He strode proudly down the aisle, letting the basket swing from his mouth with every step and forging a trail of flowers in his path.
Despite his confidence, you saw how his eyes lit up to recognise certain guests in the crowd; you didn't mind how he veered off course to greet them – how could you? The image of him plucking a flower from his basket and passing it directly to Kate would forever bless your mind.
Besides, he made it down the aisle eventually and that is all you'd asked him for. He presented the basket to Clint and let the archer pocket the two ring boxes buried at the base, before Jeff set the basket to the side and took his seat by your feet.
You smiled down at him and gave a subtle thumbs up – he was still beaming at the praise when the organ music began.
This was not the first time you'd seen Natasha in a wedding dress – a prior mission had required her and Steve to pose as a wedding couple in order to fit in – but this was the first time you'd seen her in her wedding dress; one that she'd picked for herself and worn to marry you.
She was beautiful.
You made no moves to hide your reaction, as the wedding photos would later confirm, your gaze stayed fixed on Natasha during the long walk down the aisle, radiating adoration with a wide smile and watery eyes. She thanked Alexei for walking her in, then took her place before you at the altar.
Her eyes were crinkled, and seemingly holding back tears of her own; the expression reminiscent of the one she had the night before, only this time you both had to stand tall and spaced apart, instead of leaning it to do your natural greeting to each other.
The officiant talked through the process and the legalities, but you hardly listened. You knew your lines and you knew where they came, so nothing else mattered to you besides the woman standing opposite you.
"Do you, Y/N, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife, to live together in matrimony, to love her, comfort her, honour and keep her, in sickness and in health, in sorrow and in joy, to have and to hold, from this day forward, as long as you both shall live?" The speech couldn't pass fast enough.
"I do."
The officiant repeated the same for Natasha, who watched you with a twinkle in her eyes before reciting her line: "I do."
"You may now kiss the bride." You kept the kiss short – the whole team was watching after all, and you were far too excited to talk with her and sign the marriage certificates to be engaging in a more intimate display of PDA.
"I guess we ought to join our own party," Natasha said once all the documents were completed. You nodded, took her hand in yours and led her out of the church into a shower of tossed flower petals. Thanking all the guests you caught the eye of, you and Natasha forged onwards until you were finally on your own.
Alone in a small room on the venue's site, finally away from the watchful eyes of your guests, you grinned towards your wife.
"We're married," Natasha whispered lowly, a smile spreading as she wrapped her arms around your waist; you pulled her closer with arms looped around her neck, giving her easy access to rest her head on your shoulder.
"We sure are, my wife."
"Are you tired?"
"Desperately."
She hummed, "me too."
"We just need to make it through the dinner, we'll get you changed into something easier to move in, have a couple dances, then I'm sure Tony will take over as life of the party."
The two of you stayed there for another 10 minutes, both to allow the guests to find their seats and to give yourselves time away from the bustle of it all.
Eventually, you sighed, stood, and held a bent arm out for Natasha to hold. "May I guide you to your seat, my wife?"
"Absolutely, my spouse." You felt the warmth spread to your chest when she laughed; the fact that you could pull such a reaction from Natasha Romanoff was an honour you would never take for granted. Nor would you ever get used to the way she wrapped herself around your outstretched arm, looked up at you, and told you to lead the way.
Cheers greeted the two of you when you made your entrance and took your seats at the mismatched head table: Natasha had her parents on her side, but in the absence of your own, you'd assigned Jeff and Steve to sit on your side. Jeff for being the closest family you had, and Steve just for being old enough to equate to two parents.
Soon, the applause transformed into the chatter of conversations throughout the hall, until a repetitive 'ding' of cutlery against a glass encouraged everyone back to silence. Except Natasha, who groaned when she saw who had rung the glass.
"Greetings everybody! For those who don't know me, I am Alexei Shostakov, the Red Guardian, Russia's-" He stopped suddenly to look down towards Melina, who subtly shook her head. "-But not today," he corrected, "today I am Natasha's father, the father of the bride, and a very proud man. Even if my relation to Natasha was only five years as part of an elaborate Soviet plan to infiltrate an American facility… it was a real family to me, and during our time together in Ohio I taught Natasha everything she knows about successful relationships-"
"Will someone stop him?"
"-so I know this marriage is going to be good, and last a long time like mine and Melina's has-"
"They're not even properly married-"
"To Natasha and Y/N!" Alexei finished with a cheer, much to Natasha's relief; she had sunk deep into her chair while her face lit up red. You squeezed her hand under the table to get her to look at you, then smiled, relaxing her back into the moment and away from her father's horrific speech.
A glass clinked again, but this time towards your side of the table. When you look, you see Jeff standing fully on the table, slapping a wine glass with a spoon balanced between his teeth. You wondered if he knew what he was doing, or if he was just copying Alexei, but that question is answered before you can even ask.
"Mrrrr," Jeff began, shifting his back legs to sit like a dog on the table. "Mrrrrr, mrrrrr, mrrrr!" You laughed, and scattered members of the audience followed your lead. It was enough to encourage Jeff to keep weaving jokes into his speech. "Mrrrrrrr." Jeff pointed at you; you pointed back at him, the knowing grin of an inside joke displayed on your expression.
"Mrrrr, mrrr. Mrrrr." Jeff finished. The speech was one of the longest you had ever seen Jeff give (aside from the nature documentaries he had narrated, but they were pre recorded and stitched together in editing). This was real, raw, live, and unscripted; it moved you to tears.
It was only after seeing Natasha's perplexed look that you remembered nobody else understood Jeff. You rose from your seat and cheered, encouraging everybody else to join in and stoke Jeff's ego. "That was beautiful, Jeff, I couldn't imagine a better speech for my wedding day. Thank you."
"Mrrrr," he acknowledged.
You still stood at the front of the room, with everybody's eyes on you, and you took the chance to make a speech of your own. Meeting Natasha's eyes silently told her your intentions, so she rose to stand by your side.
"Some really, um, great speeches tonight." Alexei smugly nodded his acceptance of your perceived praise, so you briefly flit your gaze to Jeff instead. "I'm sure you're all hungry, but Natasha and I wanted to make one more speech before dinner is served."
The landshark growled beside you, and you quickly pet his head to calm him before continuing with the speech. "We wanted to thank you all for coming, for all the well wishes…"
"-and thank you to the world for not blowing up while the whole team is absent!" Natasha interrupted – having noticed your struggle to find things to say – and received a burst of laughs and cheers.
"The night is still young, the formal bit is all done, so we hope you enjoy the rest of the party!"
Jeff calmed considerably when the pair of you sat back down, especially as plates of food soon followed to be set in front of him. He looked up at you with eyes pleading, and you nodded. "Knock yourself out, Jeff"; a phrase you soon regretted when it looked like he was willing to try it. His head slammed into the plate, forgoing the manners of cutlery, small bites, or even wrapping a napkin around his neck to protect his suit. You did the latter for him, though you feared the damage had already been done.
Jeff's plate was clean within seconds, leading him to look between you and Steve, eyes large and watery to obtain sympathy. "This is my food, Jeff, you're not getting any," you said. Steve hummed his agreement, causing Jeff to huff and climb down from his seat. You didn't pay it much mind until the surprised gasps started – at that, your head jolted up and you saw Jeff circling the tables like…well, like a shark would its meal.
The gasps came from guests startled by the appearance of the land shark under their table, occasionally pawing at their legs in a bid for scraps or leftovers or, most likely – because you knew Jeff – their whole meal. You whistled, attempting to call him back, but he stuck his nose up and continued on his meandering path, surviving off the few scraps he'd scrounged from your guests. He didn't return to your side until the main course was served, at which point he scarfed it down and did it all over again.
It was a relief – for you at least; a disappointment for Jeff – when the tables were finally cleared. You grabbed Jeff to stop him following the plates into the kitchen, then held him in your arms to watch as the band started up and the dance floor formed. You stayed like that for a bit, occasionally posing for pictures with Jeff in your arms and Natasha by your side, until the two of you were called forwards for your first dance.
Even as you moved away, Jeff’s head rotated with eyes locked onto the as-yet-uncut wedding cake. While you would usually leave him free to wander, his focus filled you with a deep distrust, forcing you to call Yelena over to keep an eye on him. She thankfully agreed, encouraging you to just enjoy the dance. You joined Natasha in the centre of the room, the dance floor empty save for the two of you, with crowds gathered around the edges to watch the event.
A tremble arose in your fingers as nerves started to kick in, but then Natasha took your hands in hers, pulling them closer to herself. "Eyes on me, agent."
"Yes, ma'am"
"You ready?"
"Mhm."
"Pretend it's just us; we can stop if you need."
You swallowed, then nodded again. Natasha gave a nod to the band and the opening notes of 'Can't Help Falling In Love' began to play. As the music picked up, you focused only on that and the woman leading you, following her footsteps better with every second of the dance that passed. Only when the music faded and the applause started did you remember the nerves you had initially felt; for that moment it had seemed like just you and Natasha dancing alone in your bedroom without a single worry.
"Well done, my love," Natasha praised when she noticed you regaining awareness of the surroundings, "that's our job done."
"That wasn't too bad." You grinned. She smiled at your enthusiasm.
"Then we still have a whole night of dancing to come. Just not alone." As if on cue, the singer called the other guests to the dance floor and you were soon surrounded by teammates and family, all joining in on the festivities by dancing the night away.
By the time you and Natasha fell into bed that night, you were exhausted, the events of the day belatedly taking their toll both mentally and physically. You could tell Natasha was much the same as you helped her out of her dress and threw a pair of pyjamas at her.
"I'd say that went pretty well," you said.
Her silhouette turned to you in the darkness, the glimmer of moonlight that had made it into the room reflected in her eye. She smiled and nodded her head against the pillow. "I could sleep for days though."
"Missions don't even tire you out this much," you chuckled.
"Missions don't require months of planning and prep."
"...I'm pretty sure they do. What missions are you running?"
"Ones where I get to designate the prep work to lower agents. You'll get there one day, love."
"I should be annoyed but I'm too tired."
"Mmm good, you shouldn't be annoyed at your newlywed wife anyway."
You shuffled, turning your back to her just to feign annoyance, but within seconds you had rotated back to face her. Seeing her eyes struggling to stay open, you bid her goodnight, ending the best day of your life so far.
"Mrrrr!" cried Jeff from his corner bed, startling you both back to full consciousness. You exchanged a look with Natasha, then flopped back onto the pillow with a sigh.
"Goodnight, Jeff" you and your wife replied in sync. The land shark huffed, content that he hadn't been forgotten, and soon drifted off to sleep.
It couldn't be the best day without Jeff.

Nick Fury the pet whisperer, who knew?
The fact that Fury was on his way to intimidate R is hilarious, even if he is in his right to do so lol
I'm pretty sure R is already intimidated by him... maybe less now that R has seen Fury wearing the earmuffs
I love the drawing, I feel like this is how he would look watching the fireworks, only his mouth would be open in awe
I feel like Jeff is going to dress as Fury on Halloween 😂
Fireworks & Fury
Summary: It’s fireworks night at the Avenger’s compound. Nat and Y/N have done their best to prepare Jeff for it, but the true source of his comfort is an unlikely friend.
Pairing: Natasha Romanoff x Reader
Word Count: 1504
Warnings: None
A/N: This fic was delayed because I was actually watching fireworks rather than writing. Shoutout to all the dogs reacting like Jeff in the UK tonight though.

Jeff lifted his head and slowly blinked. He tried to rouse himself just enough to understand what his parents were doing, though he soon decided that was too much effort and, with a huff, dropped his head back onto the ground. Jeff limited his movement to his eyes, lazily watching Natasha chuck a compound’s supply of blankets and pillows to the bed where you neatly arranged them.
“Mrrr?” Jeff hummed; you had approached him, and now he was being raised off the ground, awakened from his warm and sleepy state. Jeff slumped his head to watch as his limbs dangled and swung in the air, swishing every time you took a step. When you stopped, the land shark spun to complain, so frustrated at the loss of his entertainment that he hadn’t even noticed where you stood. That was, of course, until he was unceremoniously dropped into the mountain of comfort.

This was so cute!
Except the assholes bullying R, of course
Jeff is such a cutie, I had no idea the village name was Jeffrey backwards, I would never have put it together if you didn't literally spell it out 😂
I need more AUs where R is a knight...
The Kingdom of Yerffej
Summary: You’re a knight of the kingdom, Natasha is the Princess, and Jeff is the unexpected visitor you can’t help but love
Word Count: 4326
Pairing: Natasha Romanoff x Reader
Warnings: Bullies try to hurt Jeff 😔
A/N: A while ago, @natsfirecat posted a Jeff fic based on a challenge set by @wolferine to include every trope she’d labelled as S-tier. Since I was also challenged, here’s a fic that includes Humour, Fluff, Gen, Hurt + comfort, Mutual Pining, Friends to lovers, and as a Royal AU :)
Also I’m in exam season so I stayed up way too late doing this after I finished studying✌️ excuse any errors. It is also heavily based on Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword because I love that game.
—————————————————
Yerffej was a peaceful place. The small settlement had been founded lifetimes ago when the ancient people, let by the Romanoffs, had sought refuge from attackers, and the mountain cluster that would go on to become the Yerffej was the only place where the attackers did not follow. The present-day King was still a Romanoff. His ancestors had founded the kingdom, build houses for the other refugees, and built bridges between the mountain peaks, providing easy connections to all parts of the kingdom. They were a respected dynasty, responsible for the integration of the community and the prosperity of the land; but they were also known for their benevolence to the citizens, and never regarded themselves as above their subjects.

[Jeff came into your lives as a friend, not food.] - I found this funny because all I can think of is the sharks saying this about fish. How the tables have turned...
[Call me if he’s too much?”] - I thought she was talking about Jeff 😂
Aww this was so cute
Little Jeff in his suit sounds adorable, I'm glad R had him as part of the proposal
Edit:
I just went through the notes to see if there were any sketches of Jeff in his suit because you told me about the crocs sketch and I was not disappointed. You even had the sniper shot and the butterfly too. He's so adorable if he's wearing the suit or just the bowtie I'm going to steal him from Wolfie 🤭
Jeff for Dinner
Summary: Y/N has an important question to ask Natasha’s family, and a trip to Russia is required. How will they react to meeting Jeff for the first time?
Pairing: Natasha Romanoff x Reader
Word Count: 2561
Warnings: Guns and hunting
A/N: I posted my first fic on 23rd of October 2021, which was a very chaotic meeting between the Avengers and Natasha’s family. It’s been a really awesome year since, getting to share stories and meet people and make some really good friends. And especially all the friends I made because of Jeff the Land Shark. So, for the one-year anniversary of this account it seems only fitting to write another chaotic meeting of Natasha’s family, just including a very lovable land shark too.
Part of The Jeff Fictional Universe (you don’t need to read the others to understand)
—————————————————
“Y/N, relax. Jeff does not need a suit.”
You and the land shark synchronously dipped your heads to the custom-made suit folded neatly before him, then back to Natasha.
“Maybe you’re right,” you conceded, “but are you sure? It’s his first time meeting your family. Shouldn’t he make a good impression?”
“Y/N… he is a shark.”
“With legs!”
“That doesn’t change the fact that he does not need to dress up to meet my parents. I know that you didn’t make a good first impression-”
Jeff’s mind wandered off. He did not really want to wear the suit. A few days ago, you had asked him to wear it and sit still while you practised some speech; he had complied, but the outfit was restricting, and he didn’t enjoy it. Jeff much preferred to run freely.
Jeff physically wandered off too soon after. He knew Yelena was in the house; she had told him they would be going on holiday together. The little land shark was perfectly okay with that. He liked Yelena. So he left you and Natasha to your conversation and headed to find her, hoping he could beg his aunt for more gummy sharks.

It was a nice touch including the thing about Steve not liking bad language
I need to see Rumlow and his little group get punished, how dare they trap Jeff like that... Also, what's up with these caves...? 👀 Are the scary stories true?
There was no doubt that R wasn't going to become Marc's personal guard. She was right, who's better than the person she has given her heart to protect
I really like the little Jeff dividers, they're so cute
Shark-napped
Summary: Princess Natasha encourages you to become her personal guard, but before your skill can be tested, you have to stage an important rescue.
Word Count: 3080
Warnings: Swearing, sharknapping
A/N: I’m a liiiittle bit late to release day, but I don’t get to play Tears of the Kingdom for another few days, so to get out all my excitement I decided to write a follow up fic to my previous Zelda inspired Jeff fic: The Kingdom of Yerffej. Enjoy!!
“Mrrr…Mrrrr!”
Your senses awoke all at once; you felt the shove, heard the rustling sheets, and opened your eyes just in time to see the ground hurtle towards you. Pain shot through your whole left side. You’d definitely had better mornings.
The culprit soon emerged; his large head obscuring the ceiling as he hovered over you.
“Mrrr,” he said again.

["They're the decoy set, for when Jeff steals the knives."] - Lmao
Not Jeff wanting to take potatoes as part of the things he needs hahahaha
[For the whole 45 minute car ride, Jeff whined.] - R's fault for taking the potatoes off him. They could have let him have at least one
[Morgan squealed, running out and wrapping her arms around Jeff] - Aww this is so cute
If Jeff's screams are seen as a superpower, does that mean they will make him cry during missions in the future? 😂
And if Jeff thinks him and R look like twins, R should allow him to think that hehehe
Class Pet
Summary: on a visit to the Stark residence, Jeff finds something in common with guinea pigs
Word Count: 1256
Warnings: None!
A/N: Based on a request from ao3 about Jeff meeting guinea pigs! Hope you enjoy! :)
Part of The Jeff Fictional Universe (you don’t need to read the others to understand)
"Pepper's invited the two of you over as well, said Morgan wants to see her cousin Jeff."
"Jeff is always up to see Morgan too, aren't you, bud?"
The land shark rolled over on your lap, switching his focus from the TV to you, so that you could see him nod.
"You've got to get ready then, I'm meant to meet Tony in an hour" Natasha called.
"Alright Jeff, you heard your mum, go grab what you need, we'll head out in 10"
You hopped off the sofa after him, deviating from his route when he trotted to his room. You took a detour to the kitchen before heading up to your room; you knew Natasha had returned there after her conversation with you in the living room. And sure enough, you walked in to find her rooting around under her desk.
"You got them all?" you asked quietly, not wishing to startle her. She still flinched, but stopped herself before her head hit the underside of the desk.
"Yeah, almost..." Her arm shot up victoriously, a pair of Widow bites in hand.
Her face fell from pride to a scowl when she emerged, due to the pair of Widow bites you held up.
"Which ones did I forget?"
"Kitchen."
"Why do I even have them in the kitchen? In an emergency I'd just grab a knife"
"They're the decoy set, for when Jeff steals the knives."
Natasha nodded in memory, then added,"Jeff does love his knives"
"We should get him a toy one, for the good of our shins"
"I'll ask Tony to make one in the meeting today"
You agreed, then poked your head out of the room "Jeff, are you ready? We've got to go!"
"mrrrph"
With furrowed brows, you went searching for your land shark, Natasha following behind with a stack of widow’s bites.
"Mrrrph" you heard again, before Jeff appeared around the corner, dragging a 5Ib sack of potatoes with him.
"Jeff..." Natasha sighed
"You go get the car ready, I'll sort it out," you told her, then turned to the land shark. "I said to get what you need, not this."
"Mrrrr."
"It's just a day trip, you'll be fed."
"Mrrrr."
"Yes, I promise. And the food will be much nicer than raw potatoes anyway"
"Mrrrrr"
"I'll take it back. You get your crocs on and meet Nat in the car, okay? Good boy."
You loved your ability, you really did… but sometimes you envied Natasha. For the whole 45 minute car ride, Jeff whined. To Natasha, they were quiet ‘mrrrr’s, but to you- to you they were endless cries of starvation from the land shark, who seemed to believe he would wither away on the spot when you took his raw potatoes from him. It got to the point where you called ahead, desperately checking with Pepper that snacks would be ready on your arrival; it somewhat calmed Jeff, but didn’t stop his whines completely.
And yet, the second the car began to slow, Jeff acted like it had never happened. He struggled against his seatbelt and bounded towards the cabin as soon as he was freed, not waiting for you or Nat to catch up. Morgan squealed, running out and wrapping her arms around Jeff who, once released, hopped up on his hind legs and just as eagerly hugged her back – they were practically the same height when he stood like that, you were glad he was making the most of it while it lasted.
“You’ve got to come see this, Jeffie!” the girl announced. Tony and Pepper leapt to the side, making their way out just as Morgan and Jeff stampeded in, oblivious to anything in their path.
“Morgan is taking care of the class guinea pig this week,” Pepper explained, welcoming you in while Tony and Natasha talked Avengers business in his lab. “She’s been dying to show Jeff.”
Sure enough, by the time you entered, Morgan was cross-legged in the makeshift guinea pig enclosure (of course Tony couldn’t stick to the cage provided), she held the creature in front of her and Jeff watched, transfixed, from outside the boundary. The land shark was stretching his neck to get as close a look at the creature as he could, but not yet daring to enter the enclosure fully.
“They purr when they’re happy, just like now, and whistle when they’re excited-” Morgan explained. The young girl looked down smiling at the small rodent, stroking it and only occasionally looking up to check Jeff was listening, which he always was. He was captivated. “And guinea pigs also have four toes on their front paws, but only three on their back! Just like you Jeff!”
"Mrrr?!" With a speed he usually reserved for eating, Jeff shot his head down to his feet, sitting and whining as he attempted to count his toes. He'd never learnt to count though.
"Mrrr. Mrrr. Mrrr?"
"Just come here, Jeff," you called. You picked him up and placed him on your lap, then held one of his arms in front of him. "One," you counted, delicately tapping his leftmost finger with your own. "Two," you continued, then "three, four!"
“Mrrr?” He squirmed, his fin now balancing between your knees as he waved his back feet towards you.
“Well…that’s one. Two. Three. Three toes on your back legs, four on your front, just like Morgan said.”
The land shark had some…interesting reactions to everything. From getting sleepy at IKEA, to making a shark conservation documentary after watching Jaws… you couldn't predict his next move. You thought this information was trivial enough that he would return to his daily routine, maybe inspect the guinea pig more. But you were mistaken.
Jeff stared into your eyes as the seconds dragged on, your announcement hanging in the air.
And then he bawled.
Jeff's face contorted into a gaping hole, his teeth shining through the frown while tears flowed from scrunched up eyes.
His howling was so loud that Natasha and Tony came running in, already poised with weapons in hand. Morgan covered the ears of her class Guinea pig, and Pepper covered the ears of her child in turn.
You considered covering the mouth of your child, but shark mouths are considerably larger than any pair of hands could cover.
So instead you knelt before him, stroking his head and softly reassuring him, until his cry became marginally bearable.
"What's wrong, Jeff? What's the issue?"
"Mrrrr?"
"Were your back toes cut off? No Jeff-"
"Mrrr!" He suddenly grabbed your hand, putting his own against it, finger to finger. Until he saw one didn't line up. "Mrrrr!" He screamed again.
"No, no, Jeff! Jeff, it's okay buddy, don't scream and let me explain."
"Mrrrr…"
"Thank you. You didn't lose a finger off of your hands, you always had four, just like you always had three on your back feet, same as the guinea pig. I promise they haven't fallen off, Jeff, we're just a different species, which means we have a different amount of toes, and that's okay, right? Just like we have other differences too."
"Mrrrr?"
"Um, okay we don't have differences, we're practically twins." The sarcasm was lost on Jeffrey, who truly did not notice the difference between a human and a land shark, but you let it go.
He'd calmed down, which meant you could leave him to enjoy the guinea pig's company carefree once again. And maybe you would hurry Tony up on that mouth knife, Jeff's screams should count as a superpower.

[so there would be no early starts, just you and Natasha getting some well-earned rest] - Not forgetting Wanda and Jeff of course hehehe
Jeff's reaction is very much how I thought it would be, maybe they should start him off on baby's toothpaste first so he can work his way up lol
This was very cute, as expected
And thank you for including Wanda 😌

Late-night missions never got easier. Staying up ‘til 3 am would make anyone tired, but staying up until 3 am because you’ve been training, in conferences, in mission briefings, and finally in a hand-to-hand battle against an army of soldiers for the last 4 hours? Yeah, that brings a different level of exhaustion.

Oh no, Jeff...
Even if he hasn't figured it out, he's still the smartest landshark out there. I definitely won't question his intelligence because of the fact he hasn't worked out Fanny "isn't there"
It's sweet that they're sparing his feelings and not telling him, he's so excited. I want to know what his reaction would be if the "landshark" started to bark 😂
Another Of His Kind
Summary: Jeff is just visiting his aunt, but who is this in the living room?
Pairing: Natasha Romanoff x Reader (background) Word Count: 1114 Warnings: Jeff's backstory is hinted at. A/N: I finished this last night and considered writing an April Fools day fic as well, but then decided Jeff is a fool enough here for this to count. Thank you to @mirrorballwn for the idea!
Part of The Jeff Fictional Universe (you don’t need to read the others to understand)
—————————————————
Jeff was unique; he’d never met another of his kind, and even among four-legged creatures he thought himself incomparable. Admittedly, even his experience of them was limited to a few bears he’d met in the woods, and Fanny, but with that breadth of knowledge, Jeff assumed he must be smarter than the average mammal.
The fact that he even knew what a mammal was, being evidence enough. But to add further, he knew that Fanny could understand only a few words taught to her by her owner, whereas Jeff understood every word of Russian and English that his parents had spewed.
Shortly put, Jeff was confident in his knowledge. And he carried that intellectual superiority around with him at all times, which was the reason he now questioned the sight before him. You see, Jeff was aware of mirrors – unlike his furry cousin – and knew the land shark he saw in them was just a reflection of himself, but what he saw today, in his aunt’s living room, was a land shark who did not look like him.
Jeff took a step forward, while the other land shark simply stood. That settled it for Jeff, who could only come to one conclusion: another land shark stood before him! Even if his parents called him ‘one of a kind’, there was no other solution to be found; this one had a rough, black nose, and a comparatively small mouth for a land shark. As Jeff approached, it wagged its tail and lolled its tongue out of its mouth, grinning widely and exposing its short, blunt teeth.
Jeff squinted and circled the creature; it had a split tail just like his, and a fin atop its back, plus four stout legs…so perhaps it could be? Jeff grinned. He had finally found another of his kind! In his aunt Yelena’s house no less! He wondered if she had brought it in – his parents did say she was skilled at finding rare things afterall – he would be sure to thank her later, and ask where she had found it.
“Mrrrr?” Jeff tested. He asked the newcomer about others of the kind, whether they were related, and if he had more family out there, somewhere.
“Oh, the land shark has found his surprise,” Yelena’s voice cut in before any response was given. It startled Jeff out of his inspection, but he didn’t mind, instead bounding over to the Widow with the other land shark close on his heels. “She is a good land shark, yes?” Yelena asked, and received profuse nods and thanks from Jeff. Simultaneously, the other land shark jumped up at the assassin, standing on her hind legs and pawing for attention. While Yelena indulged her with head scratches, Jeff sat patiently on the floor, quietly purring at his fellow land shark in order to teach her manners.
“Good shark, Jeff,” Yelena praised. She pulled a pack of gummy sharks out of one of her many pockets and tossed a few of them in his direction. Jeff leapt and caught them all, swallowing them whole before he sat back down in the hopes of receiving more. By the time he was back on the ground, Yelena had switched the gummy sharks for a much blander looking bone-shaped treat and was coaxing his land shark friend to sit, which she eventually did in return for the treat.
—————————————————
Eventually, you and Natasha found your way into the room, eyes widening at the two land sharks chasing each other around the room. Yelena sat in the middle, watching them with a smile on her face.
Jeff skidded to a halt as soon as he noticed your intrusion, talking in quick ‘mrrr’s at you to explain the situation.
Yelena also had a go at explaining, cutting in. “They were having a good time together. Jeff likes the costume!”
If it was possible, your eyes widened even further as they flit between your fiancee’s sister and your land shark, the misunderstanding becoming clear. Jeff had also heard the word, ‘costume’, and slowly turned to eye his new found friend. “Yelena, Nat…I think we need to speak outside,” was all you said before grabbing both women by the arm and pulling them along behind you.
“He likes his surprise, makes up for the eating shark thing now, yes?” Yelena asked the second the door shut.
“Yelena, you made up for that ages ago.”
“Nat’s right. But the issue is that he… technically hasn’t worked out his surprise.”
“What do you mean? He and Fanny are playing right now, you can see!” All three of you turned to face the glass wall, seeing the two creatures tussling without a care on the other side.”
“He…thinks she’s an actual land shark.”
“My costume is too good, I knew it.”
Natasha rolled her eyes, then cut her sister off, “Fanny’s face is still visible?”
“Jeff doesn’t-”
“He just hasn’t worked it out yet!” You were forced to interject before the younger widow could make some snarky comment. The two sisters could switch between friends and foe in the blink of an eye, but right now your priority was Jeff. When their attention was back on you, you continued, “he got concerned when Yelena mentioned it was a costume, and he was so thankful that she found another of his kind that I didn’t have the heart to tell him.”
“You haven’t had the heart to tell him what happened to the real ‘others of his kind’ either,” Yelena muttered, holding her hands up in compliance when Natasha’s scolding glare turned on her.
“He’s not ready for that-”
“He’ll find out someday, there’s plenty of articles for him to read.”
“Jeff can’t read.”
“We’ve tried teaching him,” you added to Natasha’s comment, shrugging at Yelena’s dumbfounded expression.
“I could-”
“-We’re off-topic” you interrupted again, “who is going to tell Jeff that his new friend is just your dog wearing a fancy costume?”
“Yelena? If you wanna preach about being candid with Jeff, maybe you want to do the honours?”
“Just after I got Jeff’s trust back? There is no way! It is not my fault that the costume is too convincing!”
“It’s not-”
“I don’t know if we can do it.” The sisters followed your gaze into the house, watching a scene of innocence. Fanny lay curled on the sofa, with Jeff snuggled even tighter next to her, both parties clearly exhausted from the morning’s enthusiasm.
“We can’t tell him, but he’ll work it out eventually. And when he does, we’ll have to tell him where he came from, what happened to his real family, and deal with the consequences then.”
“Let him have this for now.”

[Jeff had developed an obsession with the shoe brand, and you had caved, getting him four specially made Crocs to fit his feet.] - Please, this is so cute
Jeff is right, the alligators to deserve jail. That was so mean of them
I like how defensive R got too, yelling at the alligators 😂
Now they should find out who left gum in a stupid place and them in jail too hehehe
what are your thoughts on jeff going to a zoo?
personally, i feel like he’d get really sad about all the animals being in “prison” and then start a revolution to break them all out
i’d like to know your thoughts <3

Zoo Break
Summary: Jeff has a very eventful visit to the zoo
Pairing: Natasha Romanoff x Reader
Word Count: 1324
Warnings: upset Jeff :'(
A/N: Hi Bonkie!! (and Jroki) sorry this took so long but hope you enjoy! idk if it is my best work but I wanted to get something out :))
Jeff request guidelines
Counting this as part of the JFU (though other parts are not necessary to read for this)
—————————————————
“I’m worried about him,” Natasha said one day. You had to agree.
Jeff had befriended another shark over the summer, one who lived just off of the nearby coast. It was close enough that you brought Jeff to the seaside to play every other week, but as winter came in, the shark had migrated; although Jeff waited and watched in the ocean, his friend wouldn’t come to greet him.
Anyone who knew Jeff could see how upset he was, and neither you nor Natasha were quite sure how to help his loneliness.
Until Natasha had an idea:
That was how you found yourselves at the zoo, you and Natasha ambling hand in hand and Jeff excitedly running circles around the two of you, even if you were still just in the line to get tickets. After enough disruption to the other visitors in line, Natasha dropped your hand and knelt, catching Jeff and lifting him the next time he ran close.
She kept hold of him until you got to the gate, where the security worker perked up as soon as she saw you. You were expecting recognition, either of yourself and Natasha or just Jeff, who was a celebrity in his own right, but what came next defied your prediction.
“You must be the new animal handlers! I’ll open the gate; just go right in.”
“Oh no, we’re not-” Natasha tried to interrupt, but the worker wasn’t listening.
“For reference, we have a separate gate for employees you can use next time; we don’t expect you to queue every time you come to work!”
You and Natasha exchanged a look. Meanwhile, the employee smiled and expectantly waited for you to pass through the – now opened – barrier. With a shrug, you thanked the lady and passed through; Natasha and Jeff right behind you.
“That was odd,” you noted, “I guess Jeff is our free pass.”
“Or our outfits looking like zoo keepers? That’d do it.”
“We don’t look like zoo keepers! It isn’t even like their uniform!”
“No. It’s the Jurassic Park uniform.” Natasha said, accompanying it with a condescending pat on your shoulder. As you were humbled, Natasha set Jeff down and pulled two pairs of Crocs from her bag. Jeff had developed an obsession with the shoe brand, and you had caved, getting him four specially made Crocs to fit his feet.
He checked they were in sports mode before slipping the Crocs on, then instantly took off running to see the animals.
The monkey exhibit came first, and Jeff was there long before you and Natasha caught up. He was in an intense stare-down with a monkey, neither blinking, just maintaining eye contact through the glass barrier; if you didn’t know Jeff better, you’d have thought they were communicating.
The contest finally ended when the monkey slammed a hand into the glass, causing Jeff to startle backwards.
“Mrrr,” he whined, trotting forwards and then lifting a croc-clad hand to mirror the monkey on the other side of the glass.
“It is like in the movies,” you agreed, “except these are real monkeys.”
“Mrrr?”
You snickered, then translated for Natasha. “Jeff wants to know what the monkeys did. You know those scenes in movies where the prisoners put a hand on the glass? He thinks it’s like that.”
Her eyes widened in understanding, and she quickly knelt to explain it to him. “Oh no, Jeff, this isn’t a jail. Humans caught all these animals in the wild because they were injured! And so the zoo is trying to make them better.”
“Mrrr.”
Natasha took it as understanding, especially when Jeff turned and continued walking. But you knew it was different. He’d heard bits of what Natasha had said, collecting it together into an image of innocent animal arrest. With the zoo attempting to make them better members of animal society.
Jeff formulated a plan as he walked, plotting a jailbreak to free all the animals. He’d clearly been listening to Natasha’s mission plans as he included everything relevant. The only issue was that a zoo-break might get you all arrested.
“Hey Jeff, buddy, I like your plan,” you appeased, earning a confused look from Natasha, “but how about we attempt it another day? Today you can walk around with us and just scope the zoo out. Then we’ll figure out a plan for the next visit.”
Jeff huffed an agreement, falling in line to walk by you. He made a couple of comments on escape plans as you walked around, but slowly he seemed to return to general excitement at seeing the animals.
Until the alligators:
They were in an open-air enclosure, a circular pit surrounded by a low brick wall, allowing anyone tall enough to peer down into the rocky terrain and watch the alligators swim, sunbathe, sleep, or eat.
Jeff was, unfortunately, not in the ‘tall enough’ category. He tried his best, scraping at the brick, but he couldn’t get his head over. Your attempt to helpfully lift him and put him atop the wall backfired; someone had left a piece of half-chewed piece of gum right where you set Jeff down, and his croc immediately stuck to it.
The distressed ‘mrrr’ that resulted turned the heads of visitors and alligators alike. Everyone saw Jeff’s thrashing and squirming, but nobody could step in when his foot slipped out of his croc; the shoe stayed stuck while the land shark slipped backwards.
The crowd watched Jeff fall and bounce down the rocks, right into the alligator pen.
They gasped as the alligators began to circle Jeff. You shot your arm out just to stop Natasha from voluntarily joining Jeff.
“Y/N, what are you doing? There are alligators in there! Jeff will get hurt if we don’t get him!”
“He’s already getting hurt, just not physically,” you grimaced, listening to the conversation below. “There’s not much we can do aside from calling him out.”
Jeff didn’t listen to your calls. He thought his chances would be stronger if he stood his ground, warning the alligators to stay away.
When they asked about his shoes with unexpected curiosity, Jeff relaxed his stance. He fell for their ruse and began to explain his Crocs. He talked so animatedly, with a wide grin and waving hands, about his love of shoes that it broke your heart when the alligators began to laugh at him.
When one of the alligators snatched at Jeff’s croc, you jumped in yourself. Jeff ran for your arms immediately. His cries echoed around the enclosure, the alligators’ insults and the eaten croc getting to him.
You brought Jeff to the barrier and handed him up to Natasha. She set him on the safe side with ease; before reaching down to help you climb up too.
"You know why they're called crocs? ‘cos you and your cousins are worn as fashion statements!” you couldn't help but retaliate. Natasha was at your side to calm you down, trying to reduce the scene you and the crying land shark were causing.
She managed it successfully, making you do some guided breathing before you could talk to Jeff. She met your eye once you finished, waiting for the nod before you both turned to face Jeff.
"Are you alright, Jeff?" Natasha asked first. The shark continued to sniffle, but he shook his head from side to side; a very definite 'no'.
You both sat in silence with him as his crying slowly died down. Then he turned to you, coming up and nudging your pocket with a soft 'mrr?'
You did as he requested, pulling the map and pen out of your bag and setting it down for him. He looked at you, and then he looked at Natasha, checking you were both watching while he grabbed the pen and scribbled a giant X over the alligator section of the map.
"Mrrr." He huffed, ready for you to translate.
"The alligators deserve this jail."

[but Jeff did not find the cluster of hay appealing and decided to move on.] - Wow, something Jeff doesn't like to eat? That's got to be on some sort of short list
[The wads of spit were being pelted against your back] - This was not a warzone I'd have expected lol
[It did not taste pleasant.] - *Adds grass to the list*
Aww no, not the cows. I thought they might actually get along with him
[Jeff had learnt from the cows. He would not risk meeting Susan.] - 😂
[“Is that my coat?!”] - This reminded me of...

[His spherical body was remarkably aerodynamic and flew faster and further than either of you could reach.] - Omg 😂
Aww Jeff finally made a friend. Very cute, I can just see them comparing their legs and trying to stretch so that they are taller than the other
Hello Auntie,
Please consider this request of Jeff visiting a farm and meeting all the barnyard animals. You can choose if he eats them or not, though.
Love your nephew,
Jonathan
Farmer Jeff
Summary: When Y/N and Natasha have to do some farm work, Jeff starts to learn each animal has a different personality.
Pairing: Natasha Romanoff x Reader

An Avengers’ job doesn’t end when a mission ends. No. There were several bonus tasks afterwards: report writing, meetings, debriefs, and the one that could bring fun or misery: publicity.
You knew people gossiped about why you were dating Natasha, but of all the ridiculous theories, your favourite had to be that you dated her just for her high standing with Director Fury and Maria Hill. Because each member’s personal standing with the two superiors determined how enjoyable their publicity assignment would be.
You could watch and laugh these days as Tony and Steve did copious press conferences with difficult questions. Meanwhile, you got to accompany your girlfriend on a visit to a farm, helping to repair fences and find escaped animals. They even let you bring your own animal companion, in the form of Jeff.
He happily trotted between you and Natasha, an expression of awe clear on his features. “How about you go and say hi to the animals?” you offered, “Tash and I just need to talk to the farmhand and then we’ll scatter around the farm. That sound good, buddy?”
The excitement overtook the land shark, and he was a few steps into running off before he remembered to reply, quickly stopping to nod before he started his tour.
—
Jeff’s head spun as he tried to work out which animal to visit first. There were so many, most of which he’d only ever seen in his picture books.
His decision was made by the sleepiness that overcame him. You and Natasha woke him up early for this, and when the alpacas had fur that resembled his bed, he knew where he wanted to be.
The alpacas were also napping, so they didn’t mind when the land shark entered their pen, nor did they do more than look up as Jeff hauled his small body onto their backs. In fact, when he curled up in the bed of soft fur, they joined him, dipping their heads back down and returning to sleep.
The group remained like that until the farmhand brought food for the alpacas. The rise to eat disrupted Jeff’s nap, although the alpacas kindly allowed him a descent before they stood up. They also let him walk to the food pail with him, but Jeff did not find the cluster of hay appealing and decided to move on.
—
However, Jeff wasn’t quite ready to give up on sleep yet, and the llama field was right beside him. He wandered in, hoping they would be as welcoming, but that was not the case.
He felt the impact on his tail first, just a slight nudge. Confused, Jeff turned back, trying to see who tapped him, but there was nothing to see but a drop of water.
Just as he decided it must have been raining, another drop hit him right beneath his eye. That certainly hadn’t come from the sky, so Jeff snapped his head in the direction it had come from.
The herd of llamas stood there, several facing him with their ears pinned back. Before Jeff could make the realisation, another one spat, hitting Jeff in the nose.
“Mrrr!” he whined, tiny hands gripping the spot on his nose.
Tears began to form in his eyes when you walked past. You saw the whole thing and leapt the fence to get to Jeff, trying to reason with the llamas.
“He’s a land shark. Land. He’s fine without water!”
They seemed to contemplate it. Then the llamas spat again, this time at you.
“Take cover, Jeff.”
You grabbed the land shark. The wads of spit were being pelted against your back, but at least Jeff was safe as you ran and leapt over the fence, safely escaping the llama enclosure.
“Reminds me of when I met you, Jeff,” you laughed, and he mrrred his appreciation. “Now, hows about you go stick with Nat for a bit? She’s over by the pigs. I’ve got to change my shirt,” you grumbled, assessing the wet patch the llamas had caused.
—
Jeff took your advice, finding Natasha trying to round the escaped pigs back into their pen. She’d already rebuilt the fences, but the animals were being uncooperative in returning to their enclosure, probably because Natasha was not very good at speaking pig, Jeff thought.
“Why did my mother never struggle this much?” Natasha huffed, “oh yeah, because her pigs were brainwashed.”
An idea began to form in Jeff’s mind: you were good at speaking pig… and Natasha would appreciate the help. The land shark turned to find you, only to see you nearby, with your shirt changed. You were already watching the scene, staring open-mouthed at Natasha.
Jeff looked back again and realised why; Natasha had given up on coaxing the pigs in and had instead hauled one onto her shoulder to carry it into the pen herself. With a roll of his eyes, Jeff ran over to you, tugging at your trouser leg to tell you his plan. He sighed again when you didn’t listen, realising he had to do it himself if he wanted to help Natasha.
Jeff translated what Natasha had been trying to say; the pigs listened. Luckily, their escape was only for exploration; if it helped Jeff out, they were happy to return to the pen. Jeff beamed when Natasha looked back and realised what he’d done, and his smile grew even more when she praised him for it.
Natasha still hadn’t put one of the pigs down, and it was now beginning to squirm in her arms. It remained like that when Natasha turned further, catching you gaping at her. A smirk spread over her face as she spoke to Jeff: “I appreciate the help, Jeff. Since someone wasn’t being of use.” She raised her voice to ensure you caught the end of it before commanding you to get back to work.
“Yes ma’am.”
—
Jeff’s visit to the cows was far more short-lived. They were spread around the enclosure when Jeff crawled under the fence, almost all eating grass with half-lidded eyes. Jeff had already passed up on food earlier that day, and since the cows seemed to enjoy their food, he felt he ought to try it.
He clamped his jaws around a particularly long patch of grass, which drew the cows’ attention. It did not taste pleasant. Still, Jeff persevered, even trying to copy the cows to see if their technique produced a different flavour; he shut his eyes halfway and began to chew aggressively, jaw opening and moving like the cows’.
A few seconds into the chewing and the cows decided this intruder was mocking them. They began to gather in front of Jeff, hooves pawing at the ground. Jeff continued chewing, oblivious to the next threat. Then the cows charged; Jeff’s eyes flew open, even more than usual, as he spat out the grass and sprinted back under the fence.
Jeff decided he did not like the cows.
—
“That one is Susan,” the farmhand introduced as Jeff neared the chicken coop. “She’s a Buff Orpington, very friendly.” Jeff disagreed; the orange-coloured chicken staring him down seemed unusually large and threatening.
Jeff had learnt from the cows. He would not risk meeting Susan.
—
After passing on the chickens, the next pen was for the sheep, who seemed far friendlier, but Jeff wouldn’t risk it. He wanted to blend in. And he knew just the method.
You hadn’t locked the car after you grabbed the new shirt, which gave Jeff easy access to open it up and rummage through the spare clothes in the back. Natasha stored a coat in case the weather turned cold; it possessed the right fluffiness to make Jeff look like a sheep.
Jeff balanced the coat atop himself before crawling into the enclosure. It must have fooled the sheep since they paid him no mind and allowed him free rein of the pen, but there was someone who wasn’t fooled.
“JEFF!”
The land shark froze in his tracks, not daring to turn and face the person yelling his name.
“Is that my coat?!”
Natasha’s voice was closer now. Once again, Jeff was bolting. He dropped the coat into the mud and ran faster than he had all day; an angry Natasha was a force to be reckoned with.
Unfortunately, Jeff was so focused on running away he didn’t notice what he was running towards. Or, more accurately, what he was running into.
There was a thump as Jeff hit whatever it was and fell back onto his hind legs. He had a second to look up and see what he hit before the horse reared, kicking and launching Jeff back out of the stable.
—
“Oh no. There he goes again.” You sighed, both you and Natasha taking off running in an attempt to catch your shark as he flew through the air. His spherical body was remarkably aerodynamic and flew faster and further than either of you could reach.
Jeff was quite disorientated as he acted as a projectile, struggling to see where he was headed. But he could make out the farmhouse and a fluffy black rug laying outside it; perhaps if he aimed for that, it would break his fall.
His descent looked good; Jeff was all set to land on the rug. But then, at the last second, it moved. A white snout emerged from the pile, and eyes widened at the sight of a plummeting Jeff. Quickly, it shuffled back, letting Jeff land directly on the wooden floorboards instead.
“Mrrpph.” Jeff groaned, trying to work out where the rug went. He was roused by a snout nudging and sniffing at his body, and he finally understood that it wasn’t a rug but a dog.
“Mrrr,” Jeff whined again, more coherently this time. Asking the black corgi why it hadn’t caught him and let him fall instead.
The corgi stretched, showing off its short limbs before looking back at Jeff. The land shark’s annoyance was instantly replaced by excitement, and he held up his arms to demonstrate their stubbiness.
You and Natasha were panting when you caught up to Jeff at the farmhouse. It seemed the worry and rush were for nothing when you saw him and the corgi, who had introduced himself as Jake, playing happily together, Jeff completely unharmed.
“We really need to stop worrying so much about him.”

The backstory for the camera is so heartbreakingly cute
[You look in the mirror again, the little shark stared out of the window. His legs swung from his seat and he smiled as he watched the world go by.] - This is so freaking cute
["Oh, when Jeff almost stole the cake."] - Now we need this story hehehe
Aww they're worried Jeff is behind. They shouldn't compare him to Morgan, I feel like girls progress faster than boys (my experience is my three nieces vs all my nephews lol)
Ah yes the signature MCU disguise - a baseball cap. They should really consider Jeff's idea - a fake mustache and glasses would work so much better 😂
[Jeff took the opportunity to give you an apologetic lick, and you smiled at the gesture.] - Cute!
[favourite hero, Spiderman. You'd never dared ask Jeff where you and Natasha ranked on that list.] - Nah, I need to know his list... Although, thinking about it, I don't think he'd have them on his list because they exceed it by being his parents. Like, they're a different kind of superhero...
R and Nat being more concerned about who authorised the show more than anything else is funny
["You should be apologising for just now," you muttered, "that hurt."] - lmao
[For Jeff, his friends Peter Parker and Spiderman were two different people, ... even when you'd had Peter put the mask on right in front of Jeff, his lack of object permanence prevented him from connecting the dots.] - This is so funny. And definitely something I would do too 😂
["I TOLD HER SO. IT IS HER POSE AND EVERYONE KNOWS IT!!!"] - lmao! R would have definitely regretted not capturing that moment
[You can never lose if you fight both sides.] - That's the best way to go about it hahaha
[Whatever the biggest, scariest ride is… we’re putting Jeff on it.”] - I think that's fair considering what he's done lol
Tbh I was waiting for Jeff to get confused when he saw two R's and Natasha's lol Maybe follow the actors around for a while before the real R and Nat caught up to him
This was so very cute... As I was reading I realised I should have made my way through the Jeff universe masterlist chronologically so that the proposal wasn't ruined for me 😂
Disneyland: A Jeff Adventure
Summary: Jeff might be a part-time Avenger, but how will he react to the greatest mission of them all? Helping Spiderman at the Disneyland Avengers Campus.
Word Count: 5123 Pairing: Natasha Romanoff x Reader Warnings: None A/N: This request was sent in over 11 months ago when I first opened my requests for Jeff ideas. It's been in progress the whole time since, but on this special day it will finally see the light. I hope you enjoy!! Comments and reblogs are always greatly appreciated!
Part of The Jeff Fictional Universe (you don’t need to read the others to understand)
In the chaos of your day-to-day lives, moments of peace and serenity were hard to come by. Family car rides don’t guarantee it either, but after consistent early starts and days spent on the road, the monotony had finally worn both Jeff and Natasha into a lull of drowsiness.
Through the rearview mirror, you watched as Jeff yawned, the little land shark curling himself even tighter around the plush toy in his arms while his eyelids fluttered. He let out a small purr, then fell swiftly back into his slumber. To your side, Natasha was much the same; she had drawn her knees up to her chest and rested her feet on the chair. You checked the road ahead, glad for the never-ending straight emptiness, before allowing yourself a moment to watch your fiance; you admired the way the sunrise glow shone on her jaw, highlighting the face you fell in love with so many years ago. If only you weren’t driving, you’d photograph that sight to keep forever.
Your eyes flicked to the road, then back at her.
You would always admire how soft she could look in civilian attire, when her upbringing and job demanded only her harshest. Her loose white t-shirt contrasted the muscular arms it exposed, and her plaited hair evoked memories of smiling in bed, watching her braid and unbraid it with gentle, dexterous fingers every day and night; the same fingers that were trained to fire a bullet and throw a punch. Her hands still bore the mark of her profession, littered with scars and blisters, but she had forged a path beyond that. She had chosen to be gentle and made a life defined only by herself; one that you were lucky enough to be part of.
Gently, you lay a hand on Natasha’s arm, drawing her from her thoughts as her glassy gaze out the window switched to a focus on you. A small smile graced her face when she looked over at you, and she blinked the drowsiness away.
Once you had her attention, you pointed a finger behind you, causing her to switch her attention again. Natasha’s smile grew at the sight of your land shark now laying on his back, the miniature version of himself still clutched in his arms, while his back legs stuck up high into the air.
Your focus returned to the road, but soft rustling from the seat beside you exercised your ears for the first time in hours. A short succession of shutter clicks followed it, and you turned your head to the side again, only to see the lens pointed directly at you. The vintage camera clicks again, capturing your easy grin, which Natasha matched mischievously from behind the body. The camera had been a gift, from you to her, on your first anniversary together; a Nikon FM10 film camera. Practically worthless in this day and age, you’d worried for weeks before whether it was enough, or possibly too much for just one year… but when Natasha opened the gift and gasped, you knew you had chosen correctly.
She’d told you the story early on in your relationship – you’d already known her past – of how she’d spent her years in Ohio saving all the money she could get her hands on, just to scrape enough for a camera. She’d settled on the FM10, the new model of the time, but parted with it just weeks later when the ruse was up, and she and Yelena were robbed of their possessions and returned to the Red Room; she’d watched her father crush the objects in his palm, destroying any evidence it might possess, as well as her only proof of life.
You’d known what to buy her as soon as you’d heard, and it was a possession she’d brought with her on every trip since.
The shutter clicked a few more times, capturing scenes of Jeff’s cuteness and you at the wheel, before Natasha finally put the camera down and leaned back in her chair. From the corner of your eye, you saw her head still tilted towards you, watching your features just as you had done to her moments prior.
She knew you'd caught her the second a smile started to tug at your lips, but that didn't stop her. Even when you turned and asked smugly what she was looking at, she didn't stop. "Our shark," she lied.
"The best view for miles," you agreed.
"Well," she pointed, "hopefully that is a better view." You followed her guide to see the tips of a castle exposed among the geology of the land. You breathed a sigh of relief; all of that travelling and it would soon be over.
Jeff's nose began to twitch at that moment –a telltale sign that he was waking from his nap– accompanied by a vacuous yawn. "Mrrr," he sighed, then flipped himself back into sitting upright, even though the slouched, sleepy posture remained.
"Good morning, sleepyhead," Natasha said with a small laugh. As if she hadn't woken only moments before. You scoffed at the statement, only to mimic her laugh when her stern gaze and poorly hidden smile turned in your direction.
Jeff purred again, drawing your attention as he brought a stubby arm up to his face and wiped the sleep from his eyes. Natasha's camera clicked again, just in time, and you couldn't blame her.
"That'll be a good one," you muttered to her. She smiled proudly, then nodded her agreement.
"Have you worked out where we're going yet?" Natasha asked Jeff a little while later. The castle and all the rides had vanished out of view again, but copious signs marked your destination even after Jeff had roused himself from sleep. Whether he noticed them or not was a different matter…
"Mrrrr." He shrugged.
"What did he say?"
"He doesn't know."
Natasha hummed. You glanced over and saw her chewing on her lower lip, furrowing her brows in the direction of the oblivious land shark. "I worry about his perception sometimes," she confessed, "it's like he doesn't even care where we're going."
You look in the mirror again, the little shark stared out of the window. His legs swung from his seat and he smiled as he watched the world go by.
"I don't think he does care."
"But we could be taking him anywhere, even back to MODOK's lab, and he wouldn't notice."
From the back, Jeff let out a low growl at the mention of his former captor. You and Natasha looked back and he smiled, before returning to his happy murmuring.
"He's aware of some things, at least,” you shrugged. “Mostly, I think he trusts us; he doesn’t have to care.”
You feel Natasha's eyes on you and take her hand in yours, "it's not the same as how you were raised; he knows we're not going to trick him and he knows we'll come find him if anyone does."
She squeezed your hand gently.
"He also can't read."
"What?!"
"He's only four, what do you expect of him?"
"I could read by that age."
"You were raised by the Red Room, love, that's not the same."
"Oh yeah? When did you start reading then?"
"Who remembers that? Oh, wait, Morgan! She's 4, right? Can she read?"
"She's 5,"
"What? I could have sworn she was just 4."
"She was babe, until her birthday party a few weeks ago. The one we went to together?"
"Oh, when Jeff almost stole the cake."
"That's it," she smiled, "she also read out her own cards then…"
You chewed your lip, looking for any excuse. Was Jeff really behind? "She's a Stark," you said at last, "they learn at an accelerated speed. It was a poor comparison actually."
Natasha scoffed and looked out of her window to hide the smile you brought to her face, but you knew it was there. For as much as she worried about the land shark, your words and the care you showed for him could remind her that Jeff would be okay. Whether he learnt to read or not, he had the two of you to support him, and that was all he needed.
Eventually, and all by himself, Jeff realised where you were headed, and let out an excited squeal to ensure you all knew too, as if you weren't the ones taking him to the destination.
It provided a laugh for you and Natasha and, when she turned in her seat and you checked the rearview mirror, neither of you could restrain a heartfelt smile at the view. Jeff's tail wagged furiously and he had propped his hands up on the base of the window, resting his head on them gently to gaze at the unmistakable turrets of Sleeping Beauty's castle.
"That's right Jeff," you confirmed, "we're going to Disneyland."
Entering the theme park, things soon strayed from the plan. Jeff was not a fan of queues, and turnstiles were too tall for him anyway, so the second you tried to enter one of those dreaded queues, Jeff was having none of it.
The land shark sprinted remarkably fast for such a short-legged creature. He bounded towards the entrance with an eager grin and a round, aerodynamic body… while you scowled and sprinted behind him. You dove towards the land shark and caught him just before he slipped through the turnstiles.
With one arm wrapped securely around Jeff, you fumbled to find and replace your cap, then smiled awkwardly at the employee working the gates. Jeff adjusted his fake moustache and glasses (that he'd insisted upon 'for the disguise'), then flopped over your shoulder, complaining that if he had to wait in the queue, you could at least carry him.
Natasha took him off your hands when you returned, doing her best not to laugh at your dishevelled state, while you got the tickets ready on your phone. Her free hand dusted off your clothes then took your hand in hers.
"Are you okay?" she asked softly.
"Emotionally or physically?"
"Both."
"Physically; I definitely scraped my elbow. Is it bleeding? I can't see, but do you know how hard that floor is? You would think that they'd design it for adults to chase their children around." You sighed. "Emotionally, I'm not sure I'm ready for the 'Avenger faceplants at Disneyland' articles."
"Then consider them gone," Natasha promised, confirming it with a kiss on your forehead.
"With so many people around?"
"You've known me for years, Y/N. I've been called the best agent anyone had ever seen in several organisations. And you don't think I can stop some photos from leaking? That's child's play, love."
She smirked through the speech. You loved when her cockiness came out; a fact she was well aware of and perfectly happy to exploit.
"And your elbow is bleeding, I have some band-aids, front pocket of my rucksack."
With unspoken understanding, Natasha turned to the side to give you access to her bag. Jeff took the opportunity to give you an apologetic lick, and you smiled at the gesture.
"It's alright, Jeff, you're forgiven," you said, with an accompanying pat to the land shark's head. He purred at the touch.
"Here, let me," Natasha said, taking the band-aid from you when she saw you struggling to apply it. She handed Jeff over, then knelt down to the level of your injured arm and smoothed the bandage over the wound, rubbing it gently. "Better?"
"Certainly easier."
By then, the queue had finally passed, so she took the shark off of your arm (still not trusting him to run free) and let you scan them through.
Finally, after a cross-country road trip and Jeff-induced hurdles, you had made it.
Thinking the difficulties were behind you, Natasha set Jeff back down onto the ground and threaded her fingers with yours, smiling that the mission-level planning of this Disneyland trip seemed to be paying off.
This, however, was a mistake.
Despite having no knowledge of the park's layout, nor of yours and Natasha's plans, Jeff confidently took the lead. He ambled ahead without even a brief glance back to check you were following.
Jeff's route was, of course, the exact opposite direction to the route you had planned ahead of time, but the land shark would not be dissuaded and, after a regretful look shared with your fiancée, the two of you took off after him.
He broke into a faster run the more excited he got, causing a slight issue given the whole park was designed to foster joy and exhilaration. Luckily for you, Jeff was also an easily distracted little creature – meaning his full-pace sprint stopped the second he caught sight of the mascot not too far from the entrance: his favourite character, Dug the dog.
Jeff turned slowly to look back at you and Natasha, as if checking this figure was real. Through panted breaths and clutching the stitch on your side, you gave him a thumbs up, setting him off like a shot again. Natasha was fairing only slightly better, breathing heavily beside you, but she still gave you a sympathetic pat on the back before managing to walk after the shark.
The mascot of Dug the dog, thankfully without a queue, soon saw the land shark storming towards him and knelt to the ground, avoiding a total knockout when Jeff leapt into his arms. Whoever was in the costume seemed to be just as big a fan of Jeff as Jeff was of them, rewarding him with plenty of hugs and scratches as he pranced around on their lap. His tail wagged so fast that you feared a tornado would form in his wake, but the mascot didn't mind – they just fell to the floor and spun with Jeff.
Natasha did eventually step in to calm the shark, and thank Dug, but it took another five minutes and several photos of Jeff with his hero before he could finally be convinced to part.
Even then, he had to be lifted back onto Natasha's shoulder, and slumped at the loss of his friend.
"Wait 'til he sees the actual plan," you whisper. Natasha laughed, then readjusted Jeff; he lay over it, already looking tired, but mustered just enough energy to wave at his new-found friend for as long as he was in sight.
You held the paper map up as you walked, Natasha and yourself talking through the different options to get you back towards your initial destination. The plan reformed on the fly, and soon enough, you were there; the bright blue lights and familiar logo rewarding your shortcuts and crowd dodging.
"Mrrr?" Jeff cooed, finally giving up on his search for Dug and turning himself on Nat's shoulder to face forwards. He squirmed and stretched his legs until the Widow put him on the ground, at which point he took a few careful steps forward, then looked back at you.
"Mrrrr." Jeff concluded after copious sniffing, then hurried to stop you and Natasha in your tracks. He ran in front of your legs and held two hands up in a 'stop' sign.
The land shark huffed indignantly when Natasha dared to laugh, before turning and launching into a rushed speech that you alone could understand.
"Jeff…Jeff slow down." You crouched down to be almost eye level with the shark, his nervous ramblings giving way to heavy breathing when you put a hand on where his shoulder would be, if he actually had them.
"It's not a trap, okay?" Natasha softened as she realised Jeff's worry. "We know it's not the real Avengers Campus, we're still on the other side of the country. This is just a theme park with lots of fun rides and characters, so everyone else gets the Avengers experience without having to live there like we do."
"Mrrrr?"
"Yeah, it helps the public feel a bit more involved, then they like us more!"
"Mrrrr!?"
"I'm not sure there's a Jeff ride just yet, buddy, but maybe someday."
"Mrrrr."
"You're right, you're right. It would."
"What's he saying?" Natasha asked when you stood up, Jeff finally deciding to walk, not run, between you and Natasha while he addressed the environment.
"He thinks there should be a Jeff ride here because then everyone would love the Avengers."
"He's not wrong."
"Your dad wasn't a fan."
"He's come around. I think seeing Jeff in the suit is all it took."
"I told you he needed to make a good first impression!" you laughed, leaning down to get a high five from Jeff.
"Well when you packed a Jeff sized suit, I didn't know you were planning to propose."
"Greatest spy in the world, huh?" you smirk, "and she didn't even know I was going to propose. We fooled her, Jeff!"
Jeff wagged his tail and ran in a circle around you – something you had picked up to mean excitement – before settling in front of you and staring up with large watery eyes.
"Mrrr?"
"No, there's still no Jeff ride. It takes a bit longer than 30 seconds for them to build one."
Jeff whined again, huffing and stamping his foot this time.
"We'll talk to Disney, right Nat? Then we can come here again once a Jeff ride is built. You can even help with the planning, Jeff, would you like that?"
"Mrrrrr"
"Good boy." Natasha met your eyes with the hint of a smile, silently communicating how amusing she found your conversations with Jeff. Thanks to you replying in a way that revealed what Jeff had said, but paraphrased, the Black Widow got to watch your interactions like a show, while you were left to deal with Jeff's tantrums.
"Why don't we go on a ride," Natasha said suddenly, "I heard there's a Spider-Man adventure, how about we help your old friend out, hm Jeff?"
The land shark perked up in an instant, Natasha's words carrying his complaints away like the wind. The 'Jeff ride extravaganza' (a work in progress title, according to the shark) was all but forgotten as Jeff hurried around the campus in search of his friend and favourite hero, Spiderman. You'd never dared ask Jeff where you and Natasha ranked on that list.
"MRRRRR!!"
Jeff tugged at the edge of your shoe – presumably he'd been aiming for your trouser leg, but his gaze was so transfixed on the sight before him that he didn't notice. You looked down anyway, tapping Natasha's shoulder so that she'd follow your line of sight and see the land shark's tight grip on your shoe too. Her camera emerged again to snap a picture before the both of you followed Jeff's gaze.
Once you saw the red and blue figure atop the fake Compound, you understood why Jeff had been possessed by the spirit of a squirrel-stalking dog.
"Hey Sharon. Let's do an altitude test for the new improvements," you heard the mascot say. 'Sharon?' Natasha mouthed; you shrugged. Jeff still watched with rapt attention, ignoring yours and Natasha's silent conversation behind him about who authorised this.
'Fury?' you signed, 'did Tony and Peter show him this?'
Natasha shook her head. 'Probably just Hill.'
"Mrrrr," Jeff interrupted sadly, then stretched his front legs until he was laying down and resting his head on his hands.
"What's wrong, Jeff?"
He sighed again, and weakly tipped his head up to the roof of the complex. At some point in your conversation with Natasha, Spiderman had disappeared, and only Jeff had been watching to see where.
But then the music swelled – you just wanted to know who composed a whole theme song for Peter – and Spiderman's voice blasted from the speakers again.
"Clear the runway, Spiderman is clear for takeoff!"
Jeff screamed, causing the eyes of half the audience to miss the Spiderman animatronic's big stunt because they turned to face your family instead.
"Is that Jeff?" someone whispered.
Jeff composed himself for the group, and readjusted his disguise glasses.
"No, Jeff doesn't wear glasses."
"Maybe it's a new look."
Jeff cowered, his tiny form bundling itself between your legs. He hadn't expected the attention, or prepared himself for it, but he trusted you, and looked up with pleading eyes in a beg for help.
You froze on the spot. Through the Avengers, you'd been subjected to constant public attention and media scrutiny, and been enrolled in almost monthly classes for dealing with it. You thought you had it all handled, but when the questioning eyes were on your Jeff, suddenly you lost all functionality.
Natasha noticed straightaway and, unlike you, stepped into action. She scooped Jeff out from your legs into her arms with a "let's go, son," and even placed her coveted disguise cap on his dorsal fin for him to take comfort in the anonymity.
You hurried behind her and put your own cap on her head. She smiled, and the two of you hurried into the closest building, skipping the queues due to the pre-planned fast-pass tickets you'd bought just for this ride. Mission planning was always your speciality, and this was no different; forward thinking made for an easier trip.
The attendant let you through without a hassle, and guided the three of you into your own section of the pod. Natasha went in first, set Jeff down on the bench beside her, then you followed.
While you waited for everyone to load onto the ride, a small nudge to your arms had both you and Natasha looking at the land shark between you. He hung his head, not looking at either of you after the nudge, then clenched his hand into a fist and moved it in a clockwise circle over his chest – the sign for 'sorry'.
"You don't have to apologise, Jeff-"
"-I should be saying sorry more."
Natasha flicked you sharply on your shoulder, then played it off as wrapping an arm around Jeff. "Neither of you should be apologising," she said firmly.
"You should be apologising for just now," you muttered, "that hurt."
"Alright, sorry love."
"Apology accepted."
"The point is," Natasha continued, now that you were done with interruptions, "neither of you did anything wrong. Jeff, you were just scared for Peter, it was a high jump-"
"Mrrrr. Mrrrr." Jeff interrupted this time and Natasha looked up at you for a translation.
"Not Peter. Spiderman."
"Jeff, they're-"
Thankfully, the land shark still had his head bowed, so he didn't see you urgently signing for Natasha to cut herself off and mouthing that you'd talk about it later. For Jeff, his friends Peter Parker and Spiderman were two different people, and no amount of explanation from you had ever managed to convince him otherwise, even when you'd had Peter put the mask on right in front of Jeff, his lack of object permanence prevented him from connecting the dots.
Maybe Jeff really was behind his peers…
Regardless, Natasha dropped the topic and corrected herself. "Scared for Spiderman then – he's your friend, of course you'd be worried about his stunts, and your reaction was natural. You remember when I came home with my arm all wrapped up?"
Jeff nodded. Natasha's eyes met yours when she continued her speech, conveying all the worry and fear she'd felt to you while keeping an even voice for Jeff. "I was worried about Y/N because they were doing some dangerous things too, like Spiderman, and I reacted without thinking-"
"Aaarms up, ladies and gentlemen…and… shark?" the attendant interrupted. Jeff stretched his arms as high up as they could go while the bar was lowered onto your laps. Then you were left alone again.
"I did get hurt but it was for the best because Y/N didn't," Natasha finished. She lay her hand in the centre of the bar and you took it, squeezing it in an attempt to comfort her. Jeff did a better job though, resting his head down to lay on your interlocked hands.
"Oh, and Y/N?" The tone of her voice changed in an instant, and you knew what was coming. "I'm gonna destroy you in this game, so you better not freeze."
"Jeff gets a whole motivational speech and I get that, how nice of you my love," you said with a playful roll of your eyes. She grinned at you, knowing this was what you needed more than the speech she gave Jeff. Then the two of you stuck your arms out in the classic Spiderman pose, Jeff following your leads, and your Webslingers ride began.
The pod shuttled you from room to room, each filled to the brim with tiny arachnid robots, threatening to overwhelm the room's Spiderman projection.
Jeff has the time of his life; it was the superhero experience he always wanted to have, helping to protect his favourite hero. You wondered if this would boost you and Natasha higher up his list; he might still complain that you won't let him accompany you on real missions, but you let him do this, so that should count for something, right?
With the way he cuddled into your side at the end, you hoped so. Or it could have just been boastful, since he'd beaten you by just a few points, his energetic wrist flicks giving him the edge to beat you.
Natasha beat you both, and she wasn't humble about it, nor was she afraid to rub it in the face of her 4 year old, land shark son.
"It's not fair," you complained to Jeff, "she has wrist weapons on missions too, her whole job is practice for this."
Jeff mrrr'd his agreement.
"Don't be a sore loser; this was all skill," Natasha boasted, pulling Jeff to sit on her shoulders. He giggled when you stuck a tongue out at your fiancée. She blew a kiss back, never wiping the smirk from her face.
You pulled the map out of your pocket the instant your group stepped back into the light. Something on there would let you get your own back on Natasha – you were sure of it – but, as it turned out, you needed to look no further than the area you were already in.
“Um, miss… are you the Black Widow?” a small voice asked.
Natasha beamed, “well, yes, I-” Her smile dropped when she turned to see the young girl who had been talking, with red hair braided just like Natasha’s. More specifically, she trailed off when she saw the child was still metres away with her back turned…because she wasn’t talking to Natasha.
“Oh honey, I sure am! Would you like a picture?” The mascot replied in an exaggerated American lilt, excitement bleeding from every syllable. She showed the young girl how to pose, and together they crouched to the ground with one leg bent and the other straight, then held out an arm to imitate shooting her Widow’s bites.
The scarlet that coloured the (real) Black Widow’s face could be compared only to the hue of Wanda’s powers. If you hadn’t applied her sunscreen yourself that morning, you’d have pulled her out of the sun and told her to put more on. Then again, you couldn’t risk it with a redhead… you’d apply more later, but there was one more pressing job that you needed to do first.
You pressed it slowly, as if that might mute the sound completely, and yet…
*click*
Your fiancée's gaze shot to you. "Don't you dare."
"Too late."
Natasha snatched the phone from your hands and left your arms hanging in the space between you and her. Jeff shuffled closer before you could chase after her, and began to hop underneath them. You quickly conceded, picking him up and cradling him in place of the phone… and then chasing Natasha.
She hadn’t run far and, while Jeff purred happily, she groaned in irritation.
“Anyone in the world-” Natasha pushed the phone into your chest. Jeff grabbed it eagerly, allowing a glimpse of the open messages. “Anyone in the world and you had to send it to her? She’s going to have that over me for years.”
You peered over Jeff’s shoulder to read the messages more clearly. "I KNEW IT." was Yelena’s reply. "I TOLD HER SO. IT IS HER POSE AND EVERYONE KNOWS IT!!!" Given the sibling rivalry between the two, this was quite a significant score against your fiancée, but there was nothing she did better than revenge. When the next match came in this never-ending war, you would be supporting Natasha in a ploy against your future sister-in-law. You can never lose if you fight both sides.
Regardless of your precarious position, you’d learnt long ago that Natasha doesn’t take after her arachnid counterpart in the way she treats her partners…most of the time… so you felt brave enough to push her one step further.
“You know, the whole team would probably want to see this,” you teased, “go over and pose with her! We’ll take a photo, maybe even get it framed. Tony would put it front and centre in the common room, trust me on that.”
Jeff cooed and nodded along with your words. He still had your phone, and unfortunately, you and Natasha were too preoccupied pulling faces at each other to watch how he used it.
“Mrrrr.” Jeff laughed again. The phone was constantly buzzing in his hands, so much so that you could feel the vibrations through his body.
“Jeff,” Natasha said slowly, each syllable perfectly enunciated in a false display of serenity, “can I please see that phone for a second?”
Ever the teacher’s pet, he nodded once again and handed the phone over. Natasha’s jaw clenched as she inhaled deeply, trying to keep her cool, before turning the phone around to show it to you.
Jeff had recorded both of you mocking each other with all the grace and maturity of 5-year-olds on the playing field, the false Widow still posing in the background. Then, taking your inadvertent advice, he’d sent it to the Avengers group chat, where the team wasted no time in making memes and mockery of the pair of you.
“Alright,” Natasha said at last, eerily calm, “Y/N, time to get the map out. Whatever the biggest, scariest ride is… we’re putting Jeff on it.”
Her facade broke instantly as she rushed forward and scooped Jeff from your arms. He squealed with joy as she threw him up into the air, then giggled in Natasha’s arms when she caught him. “Come on you rascal, time to show you what these rides are really about.”
She ran off, Jeff clinging to her neck, and for what felt like the hundredth time that day, you found yourself chasing after your shark. You wouldn’t change a thing.
