The #JeepCJ8 is most famous for being the first proper “Wrangler pickup,” even though it was built long before the Wrangler name wasn't actually a de facto pickup. That’s because #AMC, who owned Jeep in the 1970s, didn’t quite have the resources to create a full pickup out of the CJ-7, and didn’t want to risk cannibalizing sales of the larger J-series pickups. But with small pickups hot in the 1970s and Toyota launching a #4WD light pickup in 1979, AMC moved quickly to adapt. - Jeep had sold only 50,000 long-wheelbase CJ-6s in 20 years before dropping it from the U.S. line in 1975, so they were skeptical about larger CJs. But when a California dealer, Brian Chuchua Jeep in Placentia, began customizing CJs into a pickup called the Gaucho in the 70s, it proved that there was a market for such a vehicle. The Gaucho’s shell was heavily modified and a stepside fiberglass bed. The Gaucho looked good and a vehicle like it was the only viable way to have a competitor for Toyota. The Gaucho would be too expensive to fully replicate, so Jeep stretched a CJ-7 - adding 10 inches (25cm) in wheelbase and two feet additional overall length and created a shortened version of the CJ-7 #hardtop to create the CJ-8 for 1981. - The CJ-8 wasn’t a true pickup (it could also be had with a full-hardtop later) but the added rear overhang and close-cropped hardtop made it a small pickup with all of the regular attributes of the very popular CJ series. It also borrowed all of its mechanical pieces from the other CJs, though curiously it was not offered with the CJ-7’s optional 304 V8.  - Almost immediately an appearance package was added - the #Scrambler - with stripes and accents and a few custom accessories. It was so popular that most CJ-8s are referred to as Scramblers, even though not all of them were so equipped. There was also a full-bodied, all-steel CJ-8 SUV built for the US Postal Service for use in Alaska (and export). But the CJ-8, as cool as it is today, was unappreciated in its day, selling 8,355 units in its first year and steadily declining after.
