The Origin of Painting or Butades Drawing
Artist: Jean-Baptiste Regnault (French, 1754-1829)
Date: 1785
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Palace of Versailles, Paris, France
DESCRIPTION
This painting depicts the mythological story of Butades' daughter, known as the "Corinthian Maid," tracing the outline of her lover's shadow on a wall, essentially capturing the idea of the origin of painting by preserving a fleeting image; "Butades" being the name associated with this early form of art according to ancient Greek legend.
Key points about the painting: Subject matter: The painting depicts the moment where Butades' daughter is tracing the shadow of her lover on a wall, a story recounted by Pliny the Elder. Significance: This painting is considered a classic example of an "artist's allegory" where a mythological story is used to represent the beginnings of an art form.
