JEAN-AUGUSTE INGRES ‐ NAPOLEON I ON HIS IMPERIAL THRONE, 1806
In this depiction, Napoleon is shown wearing a lavish and intricately detailed coronation attire that he donned in 1804 upon officially taking over France. He wears a golden civic crown on his head, similar to the one Julius Caesar wore in Ancient Rome for his military successes. In his right hand, he holds Charlemagne sceptre, and the hand of justice is in his left hand.
The artwork made its debut at the Paris Salon in 1806 with the name "His Majesty the Emperor seated on his throne." It was owned by the Corps législatif at the time, which was established by Napoleon after the French Revolution.
Critics said it had an outdated style. They theorize that Ingres took inspiration from the Statue of Zeus at Olympia for the pose and grandeur he gave Napoleon. Phidias constructed this extremely sizable statue around 435 BC.
Despite the fact that Ingres is best known for his portraits in modern times, this portrait was not well received when it was first displayed. Critics thought that Ingres’s use of symbolism and borrowing from previous masterpieces was similar to imitation. They viewed it as overly gothic and outdated.

Achilles Receiving the Envoys of Agamemnon
Artist: Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (French, 1780-1867)
Date: 1801
Medium: Oil on Canvas
The Ambassadors of Agamemnon in the tent of Achilles is a painting by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, produced in 1801 for the Prix de Rome competition. It is now in the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris.
It shows an episode from Homer's Iliad, in which Achilles refuses to listen to the envoys sent by Agamemnon to convince him back into the Trojan War. The topic assigned for the artists competing for the Prix de Rome in 1801 was the warriors' procession toward battle; Ingres' interpretation of the subject characteristically emphasized a moment of psychological drama instead of physical action.[1] The work was intended as a demonstration of Ingres' mastery of the human figure in classical history painting – Odysseus is shown in a red cloak derived from a sculpture by Pseudo-Phidias.
The painting is in the neoclassical style and belongs to the school of Jacques-Louis David, in whose studio Ingres had trained. It also shows new influences from John Flaxman, whose work had just had its first Parisian exhibition.
