Farmer Jack and Doctor Harvey.

I had little clue exactly how to play Stardew Valley when I started simply because I had never played before. And I didn’t wanna look things up because 1. I’m stubborn and 2. I’m stubborn. So, it was a lot of trial and error.

And that is why the earliest friend I made was Dr. Harvey.

I had no idea how to save the game. So, I exited the game a few times before saving. But after not paying attention and working my character to exhaustion, I assumed that the game only auto saves when you get injured, like how many games auto save before a big boss fight. I was like, “I’ll figure out how to save later, but this auto save feature works well for the time being,” and I continued to chop trees until I passed out. It also took me a while to figure out that the reason my character was passing out at 2 am was because this was an in-game mechanic. I was confused because I’d have full health and energy while working away in the mines just for my character to go 😴.

Needless to say, I was Dr. Harvey’s most frequent client and his source of income. I was also broke-ass at this time (and it would take me about 2 1/2 in-game years before my farm was profitable in any way), so that $75 hurt every time. Someone also picked my pockets one time. I was always one coffee away from being destitute, but I’d buy the good doctor a coffee as a thanks anyway.

Oh, and I figured out that saving is the easiest thing ever. You just go to bed.
