lysical's username is vaguely familiar, i've probably read a couple of their fics before but i don't remember specifics. i'll be sure to check them out properly when i have the time.

i've been sitting on this question for quite a while because i'm not entirely sure how to answer it--what fics i enjoy for jason really changes quite a bit depending on arbitrary things like my mood in the moment, lol. ended up just tossing together a rec list of some ongoing fics that i've been enjoying.

Triple Red by caffeinatedbasil - a wc crossover jayroy series. jason adopts lian after roy disappears on a diplomatic mission to space. the sequel's currently being written. the sheer relief of it really gets to me when i'm sad i'll just reread the entirety of burning red's first chapter and hope it'll fix me.

Someday I'm Gonna Be Somebody People Want by @ahoyimlosingmymind - a metahuman forces bruce, dick, tim, and damian to watch what pretty much amounts to a slideshow of jason's trauma, starting from early childhood. it's been fascinating seeing how they react and also devastating. little jason :( he's so small

Temporary Angels by @hopetimistic - case fic, jason whump, jaykyle, lots going on in this one! the original villains are really fun. it's actually just updated recently, haven't had a chance to read that chapter yet but i'm excited :]

door, opening by @cowboysorceror - dick & jason focused and also the most detailed case fic i've ever read. obsessed. these relationships make me so upset (in a good way) my head is in my hands.

Stable Relationships by @glitter-stained - horse movie no capes jayroy au. idk i just love all the character dynamics and the worldbuilding and the imagery is so good too.

For Some Desperate Glory by @chasingfigments - under the hood au where instead of taking over the drug trade jason kidnaps bruce. love the level of detail in this one too!! and we're still relatively early in the setup but i am truly obsessed with everything happening here.

Acid by @quenchiestcactusjuice99 - jason gets shoved into the marvel universe and into the hands of hydra. good fic fun dynamics i appreciate how competent he is and his yearning for his family hits me in the face every time.

i'll be gone in the dark by @havenesc - jason rancher au where he runs from gotham!! we're only one chapter in but it's a big one + his paranoia is so so sad but also extremely funny

Therapy with Doctor Todd by Wisetypewriter - jason gets a degree in psychiatry and forces the batfam to go to therapy. it's really funny but at the same time that 'crack treated seriously' tag was not lying.

Someone commented around the angstiest part of my fic (really lovely reader, very sweet comment) that they didn't see how the story could have a happy ending because what had happened to Jason could never be undone (which is kinda the point) and the Robins would always be child soldiers (which was really really not what the story was about). And for a moment I was really confused because while the story is pretty fucking dark and the discussion over child-soldiering could totally happen in-tone in universe, it was never even a theme, so I read the comment and thought "well, shit. What do I do now?" Because it was never gonna get addressed beyond Bruce's usual "woe is me I got my robins killed" stuff, but now I felt like whatever ending I was picturing was rendered dimmer by the shadow of that untreated issue in the background. Eventually I decided to say screw it because the story is more about playing with the character's psychology and using superheroes to talk about different real-life questions than creating a super realistic flawless world where there's a great justification for everything, but it still fucked with me. I think that reader just misunderstood Jason's motives in the story since the narration didn't to the bottom of it yet which created some confusion, but I didn't expect it to catch me off-guard like that.

Anyway, dc is a made up universe used to tell stories about a lot of different stuff using different tones and themes. Don't be an idiot like me and give yourself a headache for something silly like that when you can give yourself a headache over something clever (like a jayroy horse movie AU) instead.

"Are the Robins child soldiers" It depends. If the story is super serious and into exploring complex morality and grounded from reality's standards, then yes. If the story is lighthearted, made for children, fluff, etc., then no. If it's somewhere in the middle, it might depend.

If an author wants to write a story seriously delving into the fucked up-ness of children fighting criminals, they can, and if you don't like it, you can read something else.

If an author wants to write a fun story about villains and heroes featuring Robin in a world where that's not an issue, they can, and if you don't like it, you can read something else.

If an author wants to write a serious story but not apply IRL-logic to Robin, they can, and if you don't like it, you can read something else.

for wip game: ok i HAVE to ask about the horse movie. I NEED to know more about the horse movie.

Okay so this one I love the AU but am hesitant to share because it's ooc and I'm self-conscious about it. The thing is it's a civilian AU that pulls from canon, arkhamverse, young justice show etc. so obviously it's gonna be different (but I think the mere fact of not dressing up to fight crime at night is gonna change stuff lol). Plus, of course, those horsegirl books I read when I was a preteen and a couple of long-lost fanfics about horses.

Anyway you know how sometimes in those stories a complicated girl with issuesTM goes to a ranch and is told there's this one horse is super wild and dangerous because of how it was abused by its previous owners before, but the horse recognises that the girl is complex and that she was hurt by life, too, and they're the same, and week after week they slowly get to know eachother and stop being so nervous and weary and they end up best friends and she's the only one allowed to ride the horse? Well, that's Jason and Red Hood.

Basically Jason goes to work at the Queen ranch to help with like cooking and cleaning because Roy needs help around so he can spend the time designing himself a prosthetic arm and the ranch takes so much time he needs to delegate, especially since Lian is there. And there, Jason who swore he'd never ride again, meets Red Hood the untamable horse and begins bringing her treats after a hard day of work and the develop a ✨ connection ✨. It's very indulgent, still pretty angsty because of both of their traumas, Roy's addiction and Catherine, their insecurities about Lian, the fact Roy has no idea Jason is his best friend's presumed dead little brother... But it also has all the cliche scenes of riding together, having a picnic by the river, going to dance at the nearby town, and yes, there is a scene where Jason takes Roy's hat and puts in on his head. I have to confess, this is a very feel-good one where yeah bad things happened but it's all in the past and now we're learning to heal and trust again, with just a very obvious metaphor about befriending a horse with treats. It's mostly arrowfam with the batfam kinda in the background. though there's a decent enough dose of dickroy friendship. And Jaymia friendship because if I have an opportunity to create an AU in which they get along then by god I will.

Every hero identity (batfam and arrowfam) is a horse, except for Speedy, Robin and Cheshire Cat which are poneys.

Been kinda skipping over and skim reading ur jayroy horse au cause I was looking for something else in ur tags and tbh I spent a very embarrassing amount of time thinking Jason was an actual horse and Roy was just into his vibes (tm). I know better now cause I actually read them properly but yeah, just thought it was a guy in love with his horse and I was like ‘hm, weird, ykinmk’ and then just kept scrolling.

So a fun thing with the jayroy AU is that I'm not really writing it in the correct order, I have all the ideas for scenes and the character development down so it's a game of puzzle to figure out in what scene goes where while developing with their new place in mind, and keeping the jason/roy/jason/roy pov alternance and figuring out intradiegetic time consistency (the bane of my existence). So I'm putting together my outline and when inspiration strikes for a way to describe the exact scene I'll just write the paragraph in a different colour so it stands out from the outline.

Which means that I just wrote the first scene of the AU. And as it turns out, I knew what was happening in that scene, but not the detail of how, the flesh of it, of course that comes when you're writing it. And I've been struggling with executive dysfunction for like weeks and tonight I had a bit more ability and felt very motivated to write something, and so inspiration struck as I found an angle to approach that first thing through, and this is how the jayroy horse movie fic now begins with an entire page of jason experiencing executive dysfunction.

And while I'm honestly kinda proud of how that introductory scene turned out, I can't help but find it a little funny to imagine a grizzled ao3 user, doomscrolling through ao3 fics they've already read again and again looking for some hurt/comfort to carry them through the brainfog, clicking on some innocent-looking jayroy horse movie fic and getting hit in the face with executive dysfunction like, sneak attack

I mean, if I were gonna do that with any of my wip though, it would be the one with the horses, in true trojan fashion. That feels thematic.
