Coughing fits are a nuisance and a strain. If you get a coughing fit in public, it can often also be awkward. Persistent coughing fits can also put a strain on the tissue of the lungs. Before the speech, you should be lubricating your vocal cords by drinking plenty of room-temperature water. This will moisten the vocal folds and prevent the throat from drying. Cough syrups and hot drinks are also good. Lemon and honey are a particularly effective cough combatant.
