We dedicate this Caturday to Pooh the cat.
Jay DeFeo ((1929–1989)) was best known for her large-scale masterpiece, The Rose (1958–66). This photograph was taken in her studio on Fillmore Street in San Francisco. On the verso, DeFeo wrote, “Another photo of Pooh in my studio. The note ‘be calm’ on wall opposite Rose; a reminder.” DeFeo worked steadily on The Rose for eight years, perhaps under the calming influence of Pooh.
This photograph of Pooh is currently on view in our exhibit 'Before Internet Cats" http://s.si.edu/2o7sJWN

‘The Rose’ then titled ‘Deathrose’ Jay DeFeo, 1958-1966. After learning about this work made by a very determined woman, -and I say this-, because it is a work that took 8 years, and I, the things that I can not finish in less than a week, I resign and leave with heavy load hard to bear that stays here forever. Well, now in the road learning to deal with it and be more persistent with projects and ideas. Having you in my mind, Jay! //“What began as “an idea that had a center” DeFeo once said, turned into artist’s sole focus for eight years (1958-1965) eventually blooming into a 12-by-8-foot colossus that was over a foot thick and weighed more than a ton. DeFeo referred to “The Rose” as  “a marriage between painting and sculpture,” and its layers burying earlier drafts under hundreds of pounds of sculpted paint.// - Sightlines.org //“The Rose. Begun in the late 1950s, when DeFeo, a central figure of the Beat generation of San Francisco, was just starting to garner widespread national recognition, the visionary work occupied the artist for eight years. Massive in scale, layered with nearly two thousand pounds of paint, the overpowering painting was already famous before its first exhibition in 1969 at the Pasadena Art Museum. It was next exhibited in San Francisco, then stored at the San Francisco Art Institute, where it languished for twenty-five years before a historic conservation restored it to public view. The Rose now resides in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art.”// Info and images via jaydefeo.org  The Jay DeFeo Foundation. #jaydefeo #plantsoneARTh #plantsinart #plants#art #earth #painting #sculpture (en Planet Earth) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxxQxgZlHgO/?igshid=1ril7d18sc750
