The Chilling Story Behind ‘Kisapmata’ by Mike De Leon
Vic Silayan and Charo Santos portray the role of father and daughter in 'Kisapmata'
Classic Filipino cinema has become a recently found interest of mine, and ‘Kisapmata’ directed by Mike De Leon, sits at the top of my list of favorites. Never before have I immediately noticed the close attention to detail made behind the scenes for a movie. I went into this film not having heard of it before and with barely any knowledge of what to expect, yet I could already say, just a quarter into the film, that its intent as a psychological horror had already been succeeded from the very beginning.
A family dinner between the Carandangs and Manalansans
PHILIPPINE HORROR
Aside from romantic comedies, Filipinos have mastered a way of making a contribution to national cinema, which is through the Horror genre. Kisapmata was able to portray the thing that is scarier than ghosts, zombies, and vampires. And that is…people.
Not a single scene overstayed its welcome throughout the course of the film, and the intent behind such details quickly captured my attention and taste. Psychological movies are made to make you think and itch inside your brain for answers, and that is exactly what ‘Kisapmata’ or internationally known as ‘In Just The Wink of an Eye’ did. In most cases, we watch a thriller at the edge of our seats, painfully waiting for the end when all questions are finally answered. And that is one of the things that Mike De Leon did not follow–and maybe for the better and what made the 1981 film so good.
The script is admirable not completely for its dialogue, but for its non-verbal performances. ‘Kisapmata’ never allowed the audience to see what was exactly happening between Milagros Carandang and her father every night and what sins she was continuously repenting for every morning in front of Mother Mary. Instead, we were given suspenseful noir shots full of hints, where we as an audience were left with nothing to do but form and imagine an answer to our own questions.
Vic Silayan as Sgt. Diosdado in 'Kisapmata'
VIC SILAYAN
Solis and Silayan’s dynamic, playing as father and daughter in the film, is another aspect that made the experience so chilling. It would be wrong to say that Sgt. Diosdado or “Tang” would have been as successful of an antagonist as it became without the accompaniment of Vic Silayan’s performance. The heart-racing tension between Tang and the women around him made me grit my teeth out of the thoughts that wavered my mind of what could have been happening behind closed doors.
Milagros Carandang writing her dislike towards her father in a diary
HORRORS OF REALITY
What made me consider this movie as not just another Horror story is the true events that were used as inspiration. ‘Kisapmata’ was inspired by an incident that occurred on a January afternoon in 1961 at 1074 Zapote St., when former detective Pablo Cabading murdered his daughter and son-in-law.
On the year of its release in 1981, the film won a total of (8) eight Metro Manila Film Festival awards, and despite not causing a boom at the box office, was later critically acclaimed and presented at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival. Although the film garnered more than enough attention and praise during its time over four decades ago, I think the present Filipino and international society would enjoy a look into the suspense-filled Horror classic.

MIDTERMS: In-depth reaction of "Batch '81” and “Kakakaba ka ba?” Film Reaction 2019
This film Batch ‘81 was made to awaken the young society and the parents. There are hundreds of complaints about the victims of this fraternity issue but it seems the school per se is not quite sensitive even on most of the results is the death of a loved ones none other than very young students. As part of the status symbol of being part of a well-known fraternities is one of the main reasons why they cannot avoid it.
Sid Lucero, as one of the main characters in the film, is a student from one of the universities in the country, he was attracted by the prospects of joining the Alpha Kappa Omega, one of the school's most prominent Greek-letter organizations. He took a turn to consider a new direction in his life, as his mother planned for him to take up zoology and eventually continue to medical school.
Together with other six young students who wanted to be a member of this fraternity he (Sid) voluntarily join the process of acceptance or the so called initiations or hazing.although initially they were fifteen applicants .Showing the numbers are quite giving an ideas that there are still eliminations process giving the thoughts of how prestigious the group then.
The entire film will make you into a roller coaster emotions when the events become violent even the clenching of fists and grinning of teeth would not be enough to express anger.
In the movie it is shown Sigma Omicron fratman as the opponent of the Alpha Kappa Omega who eventually Ronnie was killed.Revenge and fighting for brotherhood idealogy that was taught by an adult member.
This film was made by the director showing the poor relationships of a family. Parents are not on their top priority as to how to nurture their child or children. It was given in this movie that during that time the school has no ground to protect the student's welfare. The limitations of the parents on which is to ensure the safety of their children while they are inside of the premises.
If the father of one of the characters in the film was also present as an overseer more so that this parent is a subject of a disoriented family ties. The participation of an adult during the hazing is questionable at all instead of guiding them into a better disposition on how to accept one person into the idea of brotherhood unless they themselves suffered into the ordeal of their previous masters.
Mike De Leon wants to express his point on this movie about the government’s stand on this matter .Issues over the power also has questions on how the authority can achieve by anybody who has the connections .An edge and an opportunity used by the higher authorities to manipulate youth and teach them ideologies that this was part of good example of brotherhood. Part of the film shows bravely the lies of the government and how capable of doing ill things especially to the innocents , loyal and strong. It uncovered the true face of the world where the powerful are the manipulators.Brutally murdered by being paddled and tortured that no parents of the victims could stand the ordeal .To those who survived the hazing on the movies it cannot comprehend the pains and traumas to their co-students who didn’t make it.And at the end of the the acceptance of Lucero, Ledesma, Magtibay, Santi Santillan, and Ding Quintos - are officially welcomed into the fraternity.
The director’s heart was clearly seen in every detail of this movie coming from a very tragic moment of their lives as a young and promising child who is just wanted to experience the belongingness as most of the fraternity are made into belief that brotherhood is the main source of being focus in the life of a student and until he graduated. The Batch ‘81 was a big boom to the hearts of all the victim’s parents after losing their child to this not so explained purpose of hazing that even death could attain the goals of making believe that it is just an accident and not intentionally by killing someone but to prove how far they can stand the demands of being a member of a prestigious group. And the role of the school shows that there is no weight to prevent this and why?
The content of this story stated that the parent's dreams for their child are undoubted shows their love and concern of their future who will be taken away not only to their child’s heart but also into their hearts as well. In the part of the young students, it was also shown that they still have the choices either to back out or to join and they can even tell their parents about it. But the sad and truth about it due to peer pressures and the eagerness to become a member as to fill in their ego and they always end up deciding to join and during the hazing moments, there are no chances for them to escape or to surrender. This is the tragic part of a fraternity legend no retreat no surrender because of the reality that is new members made it surpass the test. There is also seen in this movie that two of them Ronnie and Arnie Enriquez decided to leave but when their leader Vince found out Ronnie was tied in an electric chair in this scene the possibility of the chance to die was given as an example to every young student how come they still join and willingly submit themselves to the other senior member.
The scene took place in the basement and the presence of the electric chair made it clear that somebody from the authorities provide that thing to be used for tortures .
They are pressured and the truth of a matter the parents also need to be on guard to their children. Physical abuse and verbal abuse also took place while having hazing moments.Subsequently, even the government knew about it, there is no strong actions were taken. Thus it shows the bearing of the family also plays a very important role in how to avoid the children to involve themselves unless they were emotionally searching for acceptance too. Concerning this matter about family ties which play a vital role in pursuing the stop of this fraternity. The story also shows the values of the lives of the young ones who supposedly the a future of the next generation. In this film, it was not only the people who are involved in the fraternity but it was addressed the attention of the parents.
Here the application and the relation to Adverse Childhood Experiences had a great role in the importance of the children's upbringing. The environment where they grew up with, the influences of the people around them, the values, the reactions towards incidents and the realization of the things that should be involved with that might their life put into danger.
The first hands-on that will remind their children what are the things that they should avoid outside their homes. Parents can teach them by giving quality time and effort on how to overcome peer pressure. The clarity of every boundary of the signs of danger that might take their life without realizing it.Experiences are the best teachers meaning if the youth have a good foundation at home and they are bonded with love and secured with the assurance of acceptance no matter what the consequences arose.
A very profound knowledge that should be dealt with, it is better to prevent than suffer irreversible consequences.
This is an encouragement to every Filipino family that children are the most fragile to handle but worth to nurture at an early age.Their experiences will lead them into a future that they will use on how to decide on the present situation that they are into. Parents cannot be on the 24/7 on guard their children but whatever inputs on their young minds they will use it the futures. They can handle things and decide properly especially during the hardest part of decision making. In line with this film the movie producer also had the sentiments because she experienced the traumas with his very own child .To end, the film elaborated on the truth behind the fraternity upon joining the organization and the question is, Is It worth fighting for? then a convincing eye-opener to all the parents and students.
Kakabakabakaba is a musical comedy romantic film produced in 1980 Mike de Leon as a director.
The story are about two couples Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong the other couples are Jay Ilagan and Charo Santos who found themselves in conflict with the foreign commercial giants that control the Philippine economy, the Japanese and the Chinese. Also in this film, religious issues are involved and that is the Catholic Church which has great influence in the country. The film shows on the Philippine economy and society as some evil-minded used their powers for their greediness and had an illegal activity cast in Apo hiking portrayed as main villains.
The first part of the story is one the reality of being a handler of illegal drugs without knowing that you are caring for the substance especially via airport and that what happened to Christopher de Leon since the money involved with are tremendously high even at the expense of the life of the courier. The funny moments on how to take back the drugs under his possessions are the most dangerous while it was made in a comedy genre. The director’s ideas were simply hiding the reality but exposed the tactics and strategy of those who are involved with the drug businesses.
The not so good to tell the authority because the lives of the people around the courier will be at stake and the possibility of being killed is a truth. This part of the story was a strike to warn the people who are into a traveling mode of life and at the same time alarmed the government that this is existing and happenings.A wistful of information about the dealers, courier, and the buyers are tackled into this comedy film. There are claims of marking your steps away from this bad and illegal business. Though it brought out the main objective of this movie still the need for the cooperation of the people in the society were also impacted.
Johnny and Melanie (Charo Santos) with their friends Jay Ilaga and Sandy Andolng on the event of being young and feel free they were involved in a non-music playing, opium-containing cassette tape. The highlights of the movie when they have to face to face between the Japanese Yakuza played by Johnny Delgado and the Chinese Mafia which eventually they all tried to escape and hide away from the church. Though there are some points that it seems that religious things were not that much accepted by some people.
The point was shown that the Filipinos are helpless when they became the victims especially if its drug issues then. It also tackles that it seems that the Catholic Church was dragged to these movies and yet the intentions were not as clearly stated then .but as everybody knows Filipinos are known for being religious.
.Johnny also found out that the priest and the nuns are fakes on this part of the movie elaborates that even in a religious organization can be used by these people making up or cover themselves into a spiritual thing on which the Filipinos are into high respect.
The movies again show the impact of the reality when it comes to the major problems during that Era- drug-related the most and the hardest to deal with. The target of these problems is the youth who are the main victims and most of them died at an early age. There are scenes about partying and having fun with friends that might put the lives in danger. The plot of the movie emphasizes the two cultural joints Japanese and Chinese, though it sounds so offensive it has to be tackled because the results of the drugs are heinous crimes like rape, murders, and other evil things. The part that speaks about imperialism and religion is the choice of the director’s stand. Also, the hidden mask of the religious group was shown on this film in the scene where the nuns are wearing a party dress under their religious clothes are made struck into one's mind but it is a reality though.
After three decades the realities of this film are still important and have connections to the present situation. Undeniably the guts and the will power of the director Mike de Leon has substantiated the grounds of being the focus of the objectives of the movie.
The whole point of the story is to make a move on how to unleash the people who are involved with the drug syndicate businesses even though it is very hard to fight back. Strong willed and fearlessly this film was made pointing the setback of being passive. The objective of the movie is a continuous legacy of a direction towards changes though it may take too long but the goal is to educate each and everyone especially the youth. That legacy is already seen today in the present times .It was not lost the essence and the heart of the director’s effort back then. Seems that was made just like yesterday and the impact are still going on and on
The frames of this story are clearly seen from afar and the contents are remarkably genious.
From the sifting moments of danger acts the stones are removed what left behind are gems.

Kung May Guy si Erap, May Vilma si Ronnie - Tuloy na tuloy na. Anytime now the cameras will grind. At ang magkakasama ay ang pinanabikan ng lahat sina Erap at Guy. Yes si Mayor Joseph Estrada at si darling bulilit Nora Aunor. Together, tiyak na theyèll be a riot twosome sa pelikulang Erap is My Guy. Sa titulo na lang, click na. And for sure, pipilahan ito. Just right for the new pair. No hindi sila love team. More of Magka-sidekick. No huwag natin silang i-compare. Dahil hindi naman sila talu-talo. As far as some scribes are concerned, Nora and Vi have kissed and made-up. Ngayon, kung may kaunti pang samaan ng loob na namamagitan sa kanila, despite publicities and printed materials na nagbati na sila, that is for the two to decide. Whereas kind Ronnie at Erap, alam natin ang real score...para silang magkapatid, parang nag-blood compact. Ilang taon nang tested ang friendship nila. Come hell or hi-water, nadoon pa rin ang dalawang chokaran, together they stand, divided they fall.
So, marmi ngang nagulat nang napadalaw si Ronnie sa shooting ni Vilma. More than once. Kaya nga the loudest whisper ay ito, although it isn't on the record yet. May kasunduan ang TIIP at FPJ. Na malamang, makasama si Ronnie sa war picture ng TIIP where he co-stars with Jay, Edgar and some young stars. And Erap's next target might be Vilma. While patuloy nga ang paglakas pa sa takilya nina Erap at FPJ as the real McCoy superstars, marami rin ang nagtatanong kung darating pa ba raw ang panahon na maabot ng ibang young male stars ang kanilang kinaroroonan. Jay Ilagan in place of FPJ - that is if the latter decides to retire. Kasi, hindi mo basta mapapalitan ang isang institusyon like FPJ. Para siyang haligi na kahit dumating pa ang lindol o bagyo ay maiiwang nakatindig. Ang who'll succeed Erap? It could be anyone - like Pip? or Cocoy? Edgar? We can't think of anyone na hindi bantog sa music world ang puwedeng kandidato. The trouble nga with out young stars ay napakarami nila. Pero kaunti lang ang gusto ng publiko. Kakaunti ang pumapasa. Mas marami ang mga bumabagsak. At this stage, marami rin ang humuhula: If Erap is paired with Guy and Ronnie with Vilma, then malaki rin ang posibilidad na the following witll emerge: Susan-Jay starrer; and Amalia-Pip flick; at ilang pang combination ng senior at junior superstars. Pero ang maganda nga nito, beautiful ang kanilang samahan. Walang intrigue at no professional jealousy. - Bee Kay Jay, Bulaklak Magazine No.66, 05 February 1973, reposted by Pelikula Atbp (READ MORE) https://pelikulaatbp.blogspot.ca/2017/07/kung-may-guy-si-erap-may-vilma-si.html

Rocking With The Dawn’s Francis Reyes and Rommel “Sancho” Sanchez
I've seen and heard many Filipino bands, but no other band (in my opinion at least) in the country stood as strong as The Dawn. This band celebrates 32 years of making and playing music. I had the pleasure of watching them perform live at the Philippine Digital Convention 2017, where I handled tech booth duties. I am honored to feature the band’s guitar players, Francis Reyes and Rommel "Sancho" Sanchez.
How did the band evolve ever since you guys got in the band and did your musical influences change along the way?
Francis: I think every guitar player who has been with the band—from Teddy Diaz to Atsushi Matsuura to myself to Kenneth Ilagan to Sancho, and some of the duo guitar times— changes the sound of the band, but it always manages to sound like the band. When I first joined in ‘89, I was heavily into Living Colour and injected a bit of that. Living Colour has hard rock and funk in equal footing, plus jazz, prog, pop, and every other element that can inject into their music, and The Dawn has always been like that as well. I mean, listen to the first The Dawn album and there’s a lot of things going on, even if the image and overall tone was supposedly “new wave.” I got into other things when the band went on hiatus and when we reconvened in late-99, I was into Drum ’n Bass and Trip-Hop in general— and JB was into house music— and injected a wee bit of that.
Sancho: I guess it was natural for me, growing up in Olongapo City where there were a lot of good bands, and I would see them play live during the then annual Mardi Gras festivities. My father also had a collection of vinyl LPs and then cassettes so inherited it assimilated his love for music.
Francis: Sancho and I still haven’t really explored what we can do together, but the possibilities manifest whenever we jam or rehearse. Exciting times!
I try to keep an open ear with what’s current in music and if I like whatever it is, it does influence me to an extent and I bring it back to the band. The Dawn is like a lab and playground for me… well for all of us really.
The other stuff may inspire or motivate you sometimes, but the spark, that desire to express something should only come from you.
What got you guys into music? And into guitar playing in particular?
Francis: Queen was the first band that I absolutely fanboyed over; still do actually. However, Brian May didn’t inspire me to pick up the guitar. His stuff was beyond guitar—I mean he simulated horn sections and string sections with that Red Special of his— and therefore way beyond my teenage aspirations. Then I heard Ritchie Blackmore’s wild reckless intro to “Speed King,” and THAT got me hooked.
It’s only in the last couple of years that I’ve attempted to learn some Brian May licks. His tone has always been a reference point though, and The Edge too.
Sancho: As part of an extra-curricular activity in grade school, I joined the rondalla and a chose the guitar as my instrument, having seen my father play kundiman on the guitar. It was love at first strum.
Let's talk guitars. What do you guys usually bring live aside from the ones here?
Francis: The Tokai Les Paul Custom-type is the only one I use live. At home, I have another Tokai, a Strat-style and I used to bring it too but I snapped off the vibrato arm. I love Stratocasters, and I love using the vibrato so it’s at home until I can get the vibrato block replaced. I also have an MIJ 57/62 Reissue Fender Strat and sometimes I bring it as a backup and a beautiful Tele Thinline from Vinci Montaner of Parokya Ni Edgar. It’s on a long-term loan, and only because he’s a friend and a wonderfully generous person.
Sancho: My main axe is a yellow Yamaha Revstar. I have a Japan-made Barclay guitar as a backup in case I break a string mid-set.
I gotta say, your rigs are really cool. Tell us more about how they work, which ones you can never do a gig without, and how you use everything during the sets.
Francis: My pedalboard is basically three different distortions plus three delays. I used to have a multi-effects unit which has its own set of advantages but I like combining different pedals to get, hopefully, unique sounds or tones. I also have a Budda Wah and a Digitech Whammy Pedal.
I have a little Zoom Multistomp for ambient delays and synth-like washes, a Line 6 DL-4 for basic additional delays and looping, and the Tech 21 Fly Rig’s Delay section for an “always on, tweak on-the-fly” delay. The Fly Rig’s Amp sim is always on; I set it flat so whether through an amp or straight to the board, I get a consistent signal. I also have a Tech 21 Liverpool which is my go-to distortion/overdrive; I can’t live without it! I also have a Z Vex Fuzz Factory to get Hendrix-y octave-up sounds when cascaded with either the Fly Rig’s Plexi distortion or the Liverpool.
Sancho: I have a simple rig. I have a Morley Bad Horsie 2 Wah Pedal going into a TC Electronic Polytune and the Xotic RC Booster, then to a Boss Overdrive, then into a Tech21 FlyRig which I use for its amp simulation, as a secondary drive, and for its nifty analog delay section. That goes into a TC Electronic Nova System for various modulation and pitch effects, then into a Boss DD-20 Giga Delay. I won't survive a gig without the Giga Delay.
What amps do you use at home?
Francis: A 3-Watt Blackstar Fly. It’s the best micro-amp, ever! Big tones on that. I have a little Hotone Ravo Multi-effects Unit if I want to explore textural ideas, plus a Pedal Pimps Nitro distortion made by Jay Padua. Pedal Pimps pedals are Philippine-made, and they rock!
Sancho: I use Blackstar amps at home.
What do your kids listen to?
Francis: My kids are into my songs and riffs and I hope they listen to each other and make sense together! LOL!
Sancho: No kids, only two cats and they listen to whatever I listen to.
What is your advice to people who want to play their music out there and do their thing, as well as aspiring guitar players?
Sancho: If you don't love what you're doing, don't do it. You're out there to entertain and please the crowd but you should also be having fun doing it. If you're not happy with or don't believe in the music you're playing, your bandmates and the audience will feel it.
Francis: Love it for the music, and don’t let the other stuff —fame, vices, female fans etc. LOL— get in the way. The other stuff may inspire or motivate you sometimes, but the spark, that desire to express something should only come from you.
Learn how the industry works. And it will not always be a pleasant experience.
Keep your ears open.
Pray: for clarity of mind, spirit, and gratitude.
And learning is forever… there will always be a challenge: technical, theoretical, tonsorial… LOL!
What did you learn for being in the OPM world for a long while?
Francis: Patience. LOL!
Sancho: OPM is far from dead, really.

N. Ecija family sees justice for dead kin with help from PRRD, Go
#PHnews: N. Ecija family sees justice for dead kin with help from PRRD, Go
CABANATUAN CITY, Nueva Ecija — The family of the man who died hours after allegedly being refused admission in six hospitals here found hope for justice with the help of President Rodrigo Duterte and Senator Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go.
"Maraming salamat po, Senator Bong Go at President Duterte sa tulong ninyo. Sana po ay huwag niyo kaming iiwan (Thank you very much Sen. Bong Go and President Duterte for your help. We hope that you would not leave us)," said 42-year-old Girlie Cagaoan, daughter of the late Ladislao Corrales, on Tuesday. Corrales, a farmer from Barangay Sta. Arcadia here was first brought to a hospital at 11 p.m. on April 9. He died past 1 a.m. on April 10 due to suspected emphysema. Cagaoan said they brought her father to six different hospitals on board a barangay patrol vehicle due to difficulty in breathing but received no help from any of the medical facilities, including one that is state-run. Her father then asked to be brought back home, where he eventually died.
These circumstances in Corrales' death led the victim's nephew, Lord Sicat, to seek justice by posting their family's sentiment on Facebook.
The post caught the attention of former Provincial Board member Jay Ilagan, who relayed the story to Go.
The senator, aside from paying a large part of the cost of Corrales' funeral service, relayed the matter to President Duterte who, in his address to the people on Monday, warned of a case against the six hospitals.
Meanwhile, the Nueva Ecija Inter-Agency Task Force (NE IATF) has ordered an investigation on the reported incident.
Governor Aurelio Umali, the task force chair, said he has ordered the management of the six hospitals to submit an official report on the incident to the task force. (PNA)
