So much for your happy ending..
When the bus comes to a halt Charlie is the first one to wake up. “Nugget?” he says almost whispering and I wake up to him softly shaking me. As soon as I open my eyes the realization hits that I’m all cuddled up to him in a bus filled with camp people.. Ohhh this is BAD I think to myself while instantly sitting up straight. “Morning sleepyhead.. this is my stop..” he tells me with a smile that doesn’t fully reach his eyes. “oh.. oh right!” I get up so Charlie can get out of our seats. Before he gets of the bus he wraps me in his arms in a tight hug. “I’m gonna miss you y/n..” “I’m gonna miss you too chewie.” I mumble into his chest and he lets out a laugh. “never really gonna get used to that name I think.” He then lets go of me and continues: “But we're gonna meet up again soon right?” I smile up at him “ Yeah I’d really like that.” We give each other one last hug and then I watch him get off the bus. The second he gets off is the second I start missing him but at least, I now know I wouldn't have to miss him for an entire year.
Only 40 minutes later I find myself at home too, the silence being just as overwhelming as it was last year. The story I get to tell my mom being even better than last year, she can’t help but notice the fact that the stories surrounding Charlie make me smile just that bit bigger. “You really like this guy don’t you?” She at one point interrupts me. I raise an eyebrow at her “Don’t get your hopes up mom, we’re just friends. But you’re right he is very important to me.” She smiles at that answer “If you say so honey.” I roll my eyes at her “I’m serious mom! He has a girlfriend so me and him are just friends.” “Well you know what they say honey. Everything can be broken.” I look at her in genuine shock, did she really just say that? “MOOOM!” she just laughs at me “I’m not saying you should break them up. I’m just saying that the fact he has a girlfriend now doesn’t mean he’ll have that girlfriend for the rest of his life…” I’m still not fully believing my mom is actually saying all of this.. “Oooookay… I think this is my cue to go upstairs and lie down for a bit..” I say while getting up from the couch and making my way upstairs.
I lie down on my bed but before I let myself drift off to sleep I decide to check in on Charlie. “Hey you! How are you holding up? If you ever need me I’m here okay? 😊” I almost instantly get a reaction “Not even passed out as soon as you got home? I’m impressed nugget! Thanks for checking on me though. I’m fine!” i sigh, I’m fine? I hated that I couldn’t see his face right now, his face would have told me if he was actually fine or not. Now I was gonna have to trust him on his word and i'm not sure that i could.. i had no other choice though so i reply : “I mean.. I had a pretty good sleep on the drive home, so you know.. didn’t feel the need to pass out right away! Glad to hear you’re doing okay!” “Yeah I noticed, thanks for drooling all over my shoulder btw 😉!” I felt my eyes grow wide, drooling over his shoulder? I didn’t actually do that right? I don’t think I noticed a wet spot on his shoulder when hugging him goodbye.. “I DIDN’T ACTUALLY DO THAT DID I?” “Haahahhaha, Calm down. You didn’t I’m just messing with ya!” I swear I could hear his laugh in my head when I read that. I knew he liked to mess with me and I kept falling for it.. was I ever gonna learn? Did I even want to learn? If I was being honest I actually kinda liked it when he was messing with me? For some reason I actually thought it was funny instead of annoying.. I had to give it to him this boy really could get away with anything.
After camp Charlie and I soon fell back into our routine of texting all day and Face timing all night until eventually one of us (usually me) would pass out. Weeks passed just like that and all things considered Charlie seemed to be doing okay. He definitely had his down moments and even though he wouldn’t always tell me he was feeling down, I got quite good at noticing when something wasn’t right. Which then led to him being honest with me and in the end thanking me for always listening to him. At this point in time he was actually feeling good about living with his grandma, he of course missed his dad terribly much but had admitted that it was really nice to not live in constant tension anymore. The peace that came with it had been more welcome than he had imagined. And apparently charlie’s mom enjoyed being closer to her own mom too cause they were now looking for their own place around here. Looks like Charlie is here to stay for a while not that we had met up yet like we said we would.. but this was gonna give me the opportunity do so many many times. maybe I should just ask him to hang out sometime? But what if he doesn’t want to? I don’t wanna seem weird or needy? My overthinking is stopped by the buzzing of my phone.
I’m surprised to see Emma’s name on the screen. Emma? I hadn’t spoken to her since the moment she left camp I wonder what she wants? I think to myself as I open her text “Hey Y/N! How are you doing?” Oh so she’s just checking in with me? That’s nice! “Hey Emma! I’m doing pretty good actually, how are you? 😊” “Glad to hear that! I’m not doing to well actually..” “ohh..what’s up ems?” There’s a few minutes of being left on read before I get an answer “I’m thinking about breaking up with Charlie..” That is the last thing I expected her to say and I just sit there in shock for a moment not sure of what to say to her. Should I try and stop her? Save Charlie from heartbreak? Should I encourage her? Should I tell Charlie about this? “Em.. Are you sure about this? What is making you think about doing this?” “Well.. I kind of haven’t been in love with him for about 6 months now… but I he means so much to me I don’t want to lose him.. so I’m thinking of asking him to take a break so I can figure my own feelings out.” 6 MONTHS? SHE HAS NOT LOVED HIM FOR 6 MONTHS? No wonder she was so chill with me and Charlie hanging out at camp.. SHE DIDN’T FREAKING CARE ANYMORE. I feel myself getting mad.. how could she do this to him?! I wanted to yell at her I wanted to call Charlie now and tell him what was going on. But that was not my place.. so I take a deep breath and try to reply as calmly as I can “Ooh..jeesh Emma this is not good… this is not fair to him. you got to talk to him about this he deserves to know the truth..” “No I know y/n.. I’ll talk to him.. Thanks for your advice.. I’ll keep you up to date!” My advice?! All I did was telling her to talk to Charlie about this, she couldn’t have come up with that herself?! Why did she even include me in this? It’s not gonna take long before Charlie starts talking about this to me.. and I’m not even gonna be able to say anything.. I hated it.
I can barely finish that thought before I see Charlies name pop up on my screen and I instantly open his message “Nugget.. help? Emma wants to talk to me.. this can’t be good right?” No Charlie, you're right it is far from good, she's gonna straight up break your heart. is what I wanted to say so desperately but couldn’t.. “Oh eh I don’t know? it could be about anything right? Did she say anything about what or when?” “yeah I guess.. she didn’t say anything about the topic but she wanted to do it later this week. But something is up i cant tell.. so I told her I needed her to talk to me tonight and she eventually agreed..” SHE WAS GONNA MAKE HIM WAIT AS WELL? THIS GIRL… “good that you told her she needed to talk to you today. Whatever it is it’s better to get it out of the way right?.. Keep me up to date okay Chewie?” “Yeah I will.” “Good luck!*hug*”
Poor dude.. he had no clue what was coming for him.. the rest of the day I feel restless, I feel like a horrible person for keeping something so big from Charlie and I can’t help but try to imagine what he must be feeling right now. The silence from his side is way too long and way too loud to my liking.. I'm literally about to fall asleep when my phone buzzes and I see it’s a text from Charlie my heartbeat instantly quickens.. “hey.. you still awake?” “Yeah of course I am Charlie.. You okay?” typing dots appear and they disappear again. That happens a few times and I’m starting to get worried.. “No.. No I’m not. I broke up with her.” That catches me of guard.. He broke up with her? What happened there? “You what? What happened?” “ Well long story short, she basically told me she hadn’t really been in love with me anymore for the past six months, so she asked me to have a little break so she could figure out her feelings? I’m not gonna sit here and wait for her to maybe fall back in love with me y/n. if she was gonna love me again that would have happened already, so I had to end things with her.” before i can say something charlie adds "I'm so mad and heartbroken at the same time.. you know what she meant to me and then she does this.." I wanted nothing more than to wrap him into a hug right now but I couldn’t.. so I did the next best thing I could come up with “ I’m so sorry Charlie, this is not what you deserved at all.. I don’t even really know what to say right now.. I just want to give you a big hug. Do you maybe want to meet up tomorrow? Hang out? Talk about things or distract yourself for a while? If not that’s totally fine too!” All of my doubts form before were out of the window all I knew was that Charlie now needed a friend and I was ready to be that friend if he wanted me to. “I would love that Nugget. I could use a hug from you right now.” “Well hold that thought. Tomorrow I’ll give you all the hugs you need.” Charlie and I text a bit more and then decide on meeting up in a park that’s , by bus, only 15 minutes away from both of our houses.
The next day I wake up bright and early, I can’t help but feel a bit nervous about meeting Charlie today. We’ve had spend plenty of time together on camp and it had been just the two of us plenty of times then. But now outside of camp and in those circumstances of him being heartbroken but also single for the first time.. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I just knew I was gonna be a friend to him, setting all my own feelings aside and focusing on his. Making sure he was okay cause after all that’s all I really cared about. I’m about to get out of my bed when my phone buzzes it’s a message from Charlie saying that he can’t wait to hug me in a few hours. I tell him I can’t wait to give him all the hugs either and then decide on taking a shower.
Even though he has literally seen me at worst, in my grossest clothing and even though I know he wouldn’t care what I showed up in I decide on making an effort. Curling my hair, putting on the tiniest bit of make-up, wearing my new Linkin park shirt with a cute flannel on top.. it may not sound like much but for someone who usually doesn’t put in any effort this was quite something, maybe deep down I hoped he would be slightly impressed or at least would like the way I looked.. I go downstairs to have some breakfast and then leave the house on my way to the park. Lucky for us it’s a nice day out not too hot and not too cold, the sun was out a perfect day to chill outside really. Before I know it I’m standing at the bus stop right in front of the park waiting for Charlie to arrive. His bus arrives only 5 minutes later, but those 5 minutes felt like the longest 5 minutes of my life. Just seeing that bus and knowing he was in there made my heartbeat speed up and as soon as I first see him my heart skips a beat. All I wanna do is run up to him and fly around his neck and never let go but I contain myself not knowing what he needs or wants right now I was gonna have to let him take the lead and let me know what I could do for him right now.
As soon as it’s safe Charlie runs onto the street towards me, in pure instinct I open my arms for him and he runs into them picking me up and spinning me around before putting me down again but not letting go of me. I had gotten a lot of hugs from him and they always had been tight but this might have been the tightest one yet he clearly wasn’t lying when he told me he needed this. “hey” is all I can get myself to say while being wrapped up in his hug, there’s no reply coming from him and for a second I’m not sure what to do or say next so I just hold him. “wanna.. maybe take a walk?” I ask him after something that felt like 30 minutes but was probably more like a minute. I can feel him nod and then he slowly lets go of me.
We make our way into the park and just start wandering around. I want to ask him how he's doing i wanna know if he's okay, but that feels like a stupid thing to ask cause he clearly isn't doing okay right now. But then what do you ask or say to someone who had just gotten his heartbroken? should i maybe say something completely random? get his mind away from where ever it was at? I was desperately trying to come up with something but nothing seemed good enough so we just walked in silence for a good while. Then out of no where Charlie takes my hand in his. "can we sit down for a second?" he asks me while pointing towards a bench up ahead. i give his hand a light squeeze "Yeah, of course. we'll do whatever you want Charlie." He leads me to the bench and then sits down, still holding his hand i sit down next to him as i wait for him to say something.
I can see him taking a big breath in before finally saying something. "She really meant the world to me you know.." i was not gonna lie. He had mentioned before that she was so important to him but in the times i saw them together had never really seen or understood why.. as if he was reading my mind he continued "probably didn't always look like that huh? I know you mainly saw things not going as smooth between me and her. i know you heard me complain about her.. but she really did make me happy.." I give his hand a squeeze "It doesn't matter what i saw or heard Char, she made you happy i believe you..I.." He shakes his head "I don't need you to believe me Y/n, i need you to understand.." "Okaay, talk to me then.."
Charlie takes another deep breath "alright, so uuhh.. i met her almost 4 years ago but 4 years ago i wasn't the person that i am now. 4 years ago i was at a very low point in life, my parents had just started getting into bigger and more intense fights. i had to go to a new school cause that whole thing wasn't going well, which apparently also ment losing some of my best friends, i really liked this girl but she ended up being the worst, she played me and stole from me. people at my new school really had it out for me and took every opportunity they could find to bring me down.. it's not that i hated myself during that time but i did hate life, i felt like i was going through everything all alone, felt like no one cared or understood, felt like i didn't even care about anything anymore. I was lonely, scared, lost in life and that's when i met Emma. She was nice to me, she was willing to hang out with me, she loved the same music, we had fun, she introduced me to her friends, she dragged me along to things she went to.. She gave me back an actual life, with her i had a place where i belonged, where i felt home and safe. She pulled me out of the depression i was in.. If there's a God i was convinced she was a gift from him to me.." "i.. Charlie i had no idea.. i'm so sorry" he gives me a small smile "it's okay, you couldn't.. most people have no idea. clearly things changed a bit during our relationship though, she turned into this insecure person, she started claiming me, she didn't want me to hang out with other girls even if she knew they were just friends, she mostly wanted to do things with just me.. but through it all she was still that girl who made me feel the things she had been making me feel from the beginning, she was worth it. i gladly gave up half of my life for her cause i loved her.. i still do.. i was really trying to make her happy, to keep her happy to make her truly believe she was the only one for me, to let her know how grateful i was to have her in my life. I tried so hard y/n.. just not hard enough apparently.." My heart is breaking all over again for him, i let go of his hand and wrap my arm around his shoulder sort of hugging him closer to me. "Please don't think like that. You can't blame yourself for this.." a soft, low 'hmm' is all i get as a response. "Charlie. look at me.." he doesn't.. and i sigh, removing my arm from around his shoulder taking his face in my hands forcing him to look at me. "You can't blame yourself for this. you did EVERYTHING for her Charlie. She should be the grateful one, she should have been honest with you months ago.. she wasnt fair to you, yet you gave her everything. She was so lucky to have you. ANYONE would be so lucky to have you. HECK IM SO LUCKY TO HAVE YOU IN MY LIFE. i will not let you put yourself down because of this Gillespie. I will not let you do that you hear me?"
Charlie just looks at me for a bit while i'm still holding his face and then he laughs, catching me of guard. "i hear you loud and clear.. and i see you very clearly too nugget" i instantly let go of his face "right.. sorry about that i eh.. i don't know why i.. eh.. I just had to make sure i was getting through to you." he smiles at me "Don't worry about it. You did get through to me. You're an amazing person y/n.. you know that right? You're the only one that offered to meet up with me today. Thank you.."
"Hey, no need to thank me. I know you would have done the same for me. This is what we do right? This is what our friendship is. We're here for each other in the good and the bad times." Charlie nods in agreement "true! hey uh.. speaking of good times.. i was supposed to go to this linkin park concert in two weeks.. i was gonna bring Emma with me as a surprise.. do you.. do you maybe wanna go with me?" was he kidding me? A Linkin park concert.. with him? If we didn't just have this deep conversation i would swear this was just a very nice dream.. "I.. YES! i uh.. i mean.. are you sure you want to bring me?" a look of confusion shoots across his face "Why wouldn't i want to bring you? are you kidding me? This friendship basically started with us singing Linkin park. What better way to thank you for everything and celebrate this friendship than going to a concert of the band that started it all?" i throw my arms around charlie pulling in him for the biggest hug "Yes. Yeesss i would love to come with you! Thank you!" i let go of him before continuing "i just.. i thought maybe you would want to bring one of your other friends. Let me know how much the ticket was? i'll repay you!" Charlie shakes his head at me. "nope. I bought it as a gift, it will stay a gift. This is gonna be my first time seeing them live. I'm looking forward to sharing that moment with a best friend like you nugget!" i knew fighting him on this wasn't gonna make a difference, i knew him long enough to know that if he had an idea in mind no one was gonna get it out of there.. we spend the rest of the afternoon just talking and actually end up having a really good time in the park. Sure there were times where Emma came back up and that's okay, this day was all about Charlie and making sure he got had the chance to let it all out, trying to make him feel better. If the amount of times we laughed said something i would say today did him a whole lot of good. We end the afternoon with a very long and tight hug agreeing to meet up again next week to do something fun.
As i'm in the bus on my way home i'm getting lost in my own thoughts.. Would this finally be the start of finally seeing Charlie more often? I for one would not be mad about that, I loved spending time with this boy. I loved this boy, but there's no room for those feelings yet.. I guess only time would tell what was actually gonna happen there.. I at least knew for sure i had the concert to look forward to.. even though i was kinda nervous about that too.. Charlie once mentioned mosh pits and how he thought those were fun.. to me they just seemed scary and i already felt myself getting anxious about possibly getting pulled into one.. HOW WAS I GONNA SURVIVE THAT? I take a deep breath trying to calm myself down, telling myself it will be fun and Charlie would never do that to me.. or maybe i was just hoping really hard he would never do that to me cause what did i know about concert Charlie? i had never gone anywhere with him before.. this was gonna be interesting.

Hollywood 1995
“Don’t look down, ‘cause we’re still rising up right now, and even if we hit the ground we’ll still fly, keep dreaming like we’ll live forever, but live it like it’s now or never.”
The teenaged boys finished their soundcheck, earning scattered applause and even a “whoo!” from the employees working at The Orpheum that night. The band didn’t try to hide their smiles as they took a bow.
“Thank you, we’re Sunset Curve!” one called out.
“Tell your friends!” another added.
“Too bad we wasted the tightest we’ve ever played on a soundcheck,” one said as they set down their instruments.
“Wait until tonight man, when this place gets packed with record execs.”
The boys all nodded, thinking of all the chances of fame they would have after that night.
“Okay, well, I’m thinking we fuel up before the show. I’m thinking street dogs?”
Two of the other boys liked that idea, but the other one had other plans.
Jumping off the stage, he started to make his way over to a young woman who was wiping down tables.
“Hey Bobby, where you going?” the one who had suggested they go get street dogs called out.
“I’m good!” he called out to his bandmates, then said to the girl: “Vegetarian. I could never hurt an animal.”
“You guys are really good,” she said with a smile as the other three guys joined their band member at her table. “I see a lot of bands. Been in a couple myself. I was really feeling it.”
The guys all smiled.
“That’s what we do this for,” one of them said. The tips of his chestnut colored hair almost reached the top of his shirt with cut off sleeves. “I’m Luke, by the way.”
“Hi, I’m Reggie.” Reggie had black hair and was wearing a leather jacket with a red flannel tied around his waist. An interesting combination, but somehow the outfit worked.
“Alex.” A boy with blond hair spoke up from where he was hovering just to the side of the group, wearing a pale pink t-shirt.
“Bobby.” The boy who had first walked over to the girl had brown hair and a sleeveless jacket over a t-shirt.
“Nice meeting you guys. I’m Rose.” The girl smiled at all of them again as Luke licked his finger and stuck it in Bobby’s ear.
“Oh uh, here’s our demo, and a t-shirt, size beautiful.” Reggie handed Rose a CD and a t-shirt, earning a small groan from Alex.
“Thanks. I’ll make sure not to wipe the tables down with this one.”
“Oh, good call. Whenever they get wet, they just kinda fall apart in your hands,” Alex informed her.
“Don’t you guys have to go get hot dogs?” Bobby asked, clearly wanting to talk to Rose without the other three around.
“Yeah.” Luke leaned closer to Rose, as if to tell her a secret. “He had a hamburger for lunch.”
-----
“Man, I can’t wait until we eat someplace where the condiments aren’t served out of the back of an Oldsmobile,” Alex grumbled as he put a pickle on his hot dog. “Hey, sorry, I got some pickle juice on your battery cables.”
“No problem. It’ll help with the rust,” the man cooking hot dogs said with a slight chuckle.
“That can’t….okay.”
The three made their way over to a couch to eat. Before they could dig in, however, Luke started speaking.
“This is awesome, you guys. We’re playing The Orpheum! I can’t even count how many bands have played here and then ended up being huge,” he said with a slight chuckle. “Eat up, boys. ‘Cause after tonight, everything changes.”
They all bit down hungerly into their street dogs.
Alex was the first to notice that something was off. “That’s a new flavor,” he said, a small amount of worry creeping into his tone.
“Chill man. Street dogs haven’t killed us yet.” Reggie tried to calm down his friend.
Luke hesitated for a moment, then took another huge bite.

Los Angeles 2020
You made your way through the hallway, walking fast, faces pass, weaving around people as you tried to reach your locker. You smiled as you saw your two best friends waiting for you.
“Hey, underacheiver,” Flynn said in greeting.
“Hey, disappointments,” you joked back to them. “Okay, Julie, I know you don’t want me to ask, but have you figured out what you’re gonna do today?”
“I’ll know in the moment.” The frizzy-haired girl fiddled with her bracelets as she spoke, the only clue that she was nervous for her proformance later.
“Really, Jules? That’s all your giving us? Mrs. Harrison said-” Flynn was cut off from scolding one of her best friends.
“This is my last chance, I know, I was there,” Julie finished. Flynn smiled softly for a moment, but it turned to a grimace of disgust as she noticed a girl handing out flyers.
“Ugh, what is she handing out?” she questioned.
“Desperation?” you said, only half joking. Julie and Flynn snickered.
However, you put on a smile as the girl walked up to the three of you.
“Here you go. My group’s performing at the spirit rally tomorrow. I’m sure you guys have nothing better to do,” she said, her eyes sweeping over you critically as she handed the flyer to Flynn.
Flynn put on a bright, sarcastic smile. “Oh my gosh, Carrie, thanks!”
“Oh my gosh, Flynn, don’t bother coming!”
The three of you rolled your eyes at Carries retreating back. However, someone else caught Julie’s eye.
“Nick?” you asked, looking between Julie and the blond-haired boy she was staring at.
“Still?” Flynn asked. “You know they’re gonna get married and have a bunch of unholy babies.”
“Nick’s a sweetheart.”
“Yeah, you’d actually have to talk to him to know that,” Flynn said with a small smile. “And only one of them has to be a demon to make a demon baby.”
You nodded your approval of this statement as Flynn called out “Demon!” in Carrie’s direction.
The three of you turned towards the lockers and laughed quietly.
“There’s that smile,” Flynn said, lightly poking both you and Julie’s face. “Now come on, let’s go prove everybody wrong.”
You flinched slightly as she put her arm around you, but tried not to show it.
-----
“Okay, we have one last proformance,” Mrs. Harrison called out. “Julie.”
You squeezed her hand slightly as she stood up and walked over to the piano.
She sat in silence for a moment, before saying “I’m sorry,” and running out of the room, with you and Flynn not far behind.
-----
“I’ll be back to pick you up at 5:30. Have fun at practice, Danny!” you called out after your little brother as he ran to join the baseball team. This was a daily routine for you; drop Danny off at practice, go to Julie’s to study and eat, pick up Danny, go home and endure torture.
You let your mind wander as you walked to Julie’s house, which luckily wasn’t very far from the sports fields. Walking through the front door, you let your bag fall to the ground as you went to go get something to eat.
-----
A few hours later, you were walking back to the sports fields.
“Hey, Danny,” you said once you saw him, ruffling the boy’s hair. “How was practice?”
You paid attention as best you could as he rambled on about what had happened that day, but if you were honest, you didn’t understand a thing about sports. You were just glad your brother had found something that made him happy.
You closed the front door as quietly as you could, not wanting to wake your father. You tip-toed into the kitchen to start making dinner, as you did every night.
“Olivia, is that you?” you mother asked. You winced.
“Yes, mother,” you sighed slightly, afraid to tell her that you had changed your name to Y/N.
“Hurry up and get dinner started. My feet are tired from cleaning all day.”
You wanted to roll your eyes at the excuse that was very obviously a lie, your house was a mess and you knew you would be expected to clean it later, but you didn’t want to get in trouble. So you fell into a robotic sort-of motion that you had developed as a way of hiding your emotions and thoughts from your parents.
Thirty minutes and one burnt fingertip later, dinner was ready and waiting on the table.
“Wake up, Harold, dinner is ready.” Your mother shook your father awake. You knew if you tried that, you would be slapped across the face. By both of them.
However, your father just sat up sleepily and lumbered over to the table. You stood over to the side as your family ate, not being allowed to join them.
“Goddamned roast beef is overcooked again,” he grumbled. You blinked back tears. Such a small thing shouldn’t upset you, you knew, but it did.
You endured the criticism on the meal you had worked hard to make from your mother and father for the next half-hour. Your father declared himself full and snapped his fingers at you. You whisked his plate away before taking your mother’s, too. She never ate after he finished. You took Danny’s too, but only because you knew that your parents disapproved of him still eating.
“Hey,” your father said, his voice already low and dangerous. “Give your brother back his plate. He wasn’t finished yet.”
You set the plate back down, nodding and shaking slightly. “My apologies, father.”
“Don’t appologize to your father, appologize to your brother!” your mother exclaimed, grabbing Danny’s hand from across the table and giving it a squeeze.
“It’s okay, really, I was done,” he hurried to say.
Your mother frowned at him. “Are you sure, darling?”
He nodded.
“Well, okay then…” she said, still frowning slightly. “You may be excused.”
He ran off to his room. You took his plate.
Heading back to the kitchen with a small sigh, you started making a meal for yourself out of what was left, leaving enough so that your family would have leftovers.
You ate silently, thinking about how nice it would be to have a caring family. Of course, Danny cared, but he was too young to stand up to your parents, and you never wanted him to have to. You would protect that boy at all costs.
Holding in a sigh, you cleaned up from dinner, and then pulled out the duster to start to clean the house. You were stopped, however, by your mother.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
“I- I’m cleaning the house…”
“Didn’t you hear me say earlier that I cleaned it? Are you insulting my cleaning job?”
“N-no, I-”
“You what?” Without waiting for an answer, she slapped you across the face. You struggled to remain emotionless; your face stung.
You thought it was over, but then your father joined in.
“What’s this Jennifer? Is Olivia insulting your hard work?”
“It’s Y/N…” you muttered quietly. Your father overheard and put his face uncomfortably close to yours.
“As long as you’re living under my roof it will always be Olivia. And even if you could change your name, that doesn’t change your gender, freak,” he spat.
“I know,” you whispered.
He slapped you.
“Don’t talk back to me.”
Blinking back tears, you stood still as they walked away. Eventually, you remembered the duster in your hand. Placing it back on the shelf, you walked back up to your room, hoping you would be able to escape them for the rest of the night.
-----
The next morning as you and Danny were walking to Julie’s house to go to school, you heard something you hadn’t heard in a long time: music. Julie was singing.
“Wake up, wake up, if it’s all you do, look out, look inside of you, it’s not what you lost, it’s what you’ll gain raising your voice to the rain.” You smiled. It had been so long since you last heard her voice, and her music was a gift to the world.
You walked into the studio alone, Danny having gone to talk to Carlos. Julie looked up with small tears in her eyes, seeing you standing there, smiling. She smiled back.
“It’s so nice to hear you play again.”
Julie smiled wider. “Thanks.”
Just then, Flynn burst in.
“Carlos told me you’d be out here. We need to talk.” She crossed the room to where the two of you stood by the piano.
“Are you okay?” you asked, noticing the tears running down her face.
“No, I’m not okay! One of my best friends just got kicked out of music! I’ve been up all night thinking about what I was gonna say. Might’ve drank seven sodas, but I need to get this out.”
“Wait, I have something to tell you-”
“No. It’s my turn to talk.” Flynn took a deep breath. “You can’t give up music. You’re music’s like a gift, that would be a tragedy. So you’re basically, like, cancelling Christmas, and I love Christmas!”
“Flynn-” you started to say, but she cut you off.
“Uh-uh! I don’t know why you’re siding with her, Y/N. I know you like hearing her play.”
You knew Flynn didn’t mean to hurt you, but her words stung a little. You nodded once and retreated back into yourself slightly. Flynn was too emotional (and sleep deprived) to notice.
“When we were six, we promised to be in a band together. Double Trouble!”
“I never agreed to that name,” Julie said, laughing slightly.
“That’s not the point. Jules, if you leave the music program, we’ll be apart forever. That’s just what happens. Sure, we’ll see each other in the hall sometimes, but we’ll have different lives, make new friends…” Flynn said the last part quieter. You could tell she hated the thought of losing one of her best friends.
“That’s not true,” Julie reassured her, but Flynn wasn’t finished.
“You’re right. I won’t be making any new friends. I’ll only have Y/N, and they’re amazing but I’d miss you Jules! And the only time we’ll contact each other is when we’re liking each other’s posts on Instagram. Every time I’ll be hitting that little heart, my heart will be breaking because one of my best friend’s left me, and… do you have any soda? My head hurts.”
“Can I talk now?” Julie asked tentatively.
“Fine.”
“I just played the piano and sang again. Y/N can confirm it.” You nodded when Flynn looked at you excitedly.
“What? Why didn’t you just say so?” She asked, practically bouncing with joy.
“She was trying to, but then your seven soda’s kicked in,” you answered with a small laugh.
Flynn was grinning from ear to ear now. “I’m so happy for you! And me! And Y/N!”
You all hugged, but Flynn pulled away quickly, gasping. “We need to tell Mrs. Harrison that you can play so you can stay in school and my life won’t be that sad picture I just painted for you!”
You giggled as Flynn put her arms around both of you. “Y/N, our girl’s back. Double Trouble lives again!”
“Still not our band name,” giggled Julie.
-----
“Did you end up getting back into the music program?” you asked Julie at the end of your study session for the day. She looked down at her shoes, and you knew what the answer would be before she said it:
“No. No I didn’t.”
You tried not to look too disappointed for her sake. “Oh. I’m really sorry, Jules.”
“It’s…” she sighed. “It’s okay. I can reapply next semester.”
You hugged her.
“Oh hey, I almost forgot to tell you,” she said right as you were about to walk out of the door. “We decided not to move.”
Despite the news that one of your best friends was no longer in the music program, a smile lit up your face. “That’s great!” you said, pulling her in for another quick hug. Then you walked out the door, not wanting to be late to pick up Danny.
-----
“Check it out, yeah we make ‘em say Wow!” Carrie bowed as her band, Dirty Candi, finished their dance number. You were at the spirit rally, saving a seat for Julie and Flynn, who were nowhere to be found.
Suddenly Flynn plopped down beside you.
“Oh hey, where were you?” you asked the girl.
She tried to blow a piece of hair out of her face, frowning slightly when it wouldn’t move. “I was in the band room. I wasn’t feeling very… spirt-y.” You both chuckled slightly.
“Where’s Jules?” You looked around for the other girl, but couldn’t see her.
As if in response to your question, music filled the gym as someone started to play the piano on the stage. You looked up to see Julie, alone on stage, with a spotlight on her.
“Sometime’s I think I’m falling down, I wanna cry, I’m calling out, for one more try, to feel alive,” she sang, her voice echoing slightly as it filled the room. You smiled, happy she was singing again.
Then suddenly, there were three boys on stage with her.
“Whoa!” Flynn exclaimed.
“Where did those boys come from?” you asked in amazement. Julie seemed a little shocked that they were there too. One of them, the lead guitarist you guessed, started singing the second verse.
“In times that I doubted myself, I felt like I needed some help,” he sang.
“Whoa, he has a really good voice,” you said, your mouth hanging open slightly.
You found yourself staring at him as the song went on. You could tell that he really enjoyed playing, and found yourself getting caught up in the music.
“And rise, through the night, you and I, we will fight to shine together, bright forever!” Julie harmonized with the boys, finishing the song. You started clapping with the rest of the crowd that had gathered to watch, proud of your friend.
Then, as suddenly as they appeared, the boys were gone.

Peterpatter Fest Day 5: What If
Summary:
Luke has always been an anchor to Reggie, keeping him safe even when the seas got rough and thunderclouds drew in. It’s been the same throughout this whole ghost experience. When nothing seems steady and nothing makes sense, Luke is still there like a beacon of light. So really, how could Reggie not be totally in love with him? Feeling a little miserable and sorry for himself, Reggie is sitting atop the Hollywood sign in the rain, as he reflects on all the little moments, all the opportunities he could’ve taken, all the what ifs that could’ve come from them if he’d only been a little braver.

the darkest hour comes right before dawn (juke)

Julie lays her heart bare for the boys during Stand Tall, and it almost works, except Luke doesn't make it back.
And so goes our tale of Orpheus and Eurydice.
Julie Molina felt broken.
She was curled up on the ground in her room after running from the studio, with a million thoughts running through her head - a million different ways the day could’ve played out. She could’ve booked the gig earlier. She could’ve fought Caleb off. She could’ve not performed, and then maybe the boys would’ve at least been together, and she would be okay with that.
And yet none of those things happened.
Instead, she’d lost Luke. He’d been there for a moment, desperate to hold on, and yet he’d slipped away. Somehow it felt like her own fault. There was a rational voice in Julie’s head, one crying, there was nothing you could have done, and yet it was buried by I didn’t do enough. I should’ve done more. Why didn’t I do more?
She wanted to stand up and scream. Throw the photos on her nightstand to the ground, grab her clothes from the closet and rip them apart, open up the window and ask the night sky, “What did I do to deserve this?” But she didn’t even have the energy to move, and so she stayed on the ground, knees to her chest, numb.
At some point Reggie and Alex had come in the room. She hadn’t realized when they’d sat beside her, Reggie placing an arm around her shoulder. She vaguely remembered crying into him, because she could do that now, and Alex rubbed her back and told her everything was going to be okay. He almost sounded convinced, but the waver in his voice at the end revealed the lie. Still, Julie didn’t blame him. She knew they were just as broken, despite the fact that the curse Caleb had placed on them had been lifted.
Somehow the hours passed, and Julie had cried herself to sleep. She woke up to find a blanket draped around her and Reggie resting his head against her shoulder. Alex had laid down in front of them and was fidgeting with the tassels on the rug on the ground.
“What-” Julie began hoarsely, her throat dry. She swallowed and tried again. “What time is it?”
“12:30,” Alex replied, turning to look at her. “Flynn showed up, and we explained what happened. She had your dad call the school and say you were sick.”
School. In the chaos, Julie forgot she was expected to go to school and learn like nothing had happened. She vaguely recalled that her calculus make-up test was scheduled for today and decided it was a problem for tomorrow, or maybe next week.
Alex and Reggie both looked at her, and it reminded her of how her dad and Carlos and Flynn and everyone else she knew had walked eggshells around her in the months after her mom had died.
But then it struck her that Luke wasn’t gone like her mom was.
She stood up abruptly, letting the blanket around her drop to the ground, and Reggie jumped up with her. Before the boys could say anything, she spoke. “I’m not giving up on him. According to what you guys said, he’s still at the club, right?”
Alex sat up, nodding slowly. “I mean, yeah, but we have no idea…Caleb could…he’s too powerful. How the hell are we supposed to go back in there?”
“Luke would find a way, if it was us. You know that,” Reggie argued. “Even if it was impossible.”
“Exactly. Which means we’re not gonna let him go,” Julie stated. There was the smallest bit of hope in her, a flame flickering in her chest, and she would not let fate put it out. “Willie knows how to get in, right? Can we talk to him?”
“It might be risky,” Alex said. “But yeah. I could probably find him and get him to come down to the studio.”
.
After the initial shock Willie experienced from seeing Alex and Reggie, they all sat in a circle on the ground in front of the piano. There was no time for an introduction between Julie and Willie, or an explanation of how she could see him - not that she had one, anyways - because Julie didn’t know how long they had, which meant they needed to act now.
“Look, I know this could get you into a lot of trouble with Caleb,” Alex said to Willie. “You have no obligation to do this for us.”
“Are you kidding?” Willie responded. “I told you, Alex, nothing would stop me from helping you. If you guys are diving headfirst into this, then so am I.”
“So how do we get in?” Julie asked.
“You don’t exactly get in. You’re invited in,” Willie explained. “The club is so exclusive that only the wealthiest lifers are allowed, and that’s after they sign their souls away. For ghosts, they have to be approved by Caleb specifically before being placed on the guest list. I don’t know how he does it, but no ghost can walk in, nor can they poof in or outside the walls. Besides, it’s not like he’d let the guys just waltz back in after last night.”
“So, what? There’s no other option?” Julie realized she may have said that too forcibly when Willie winced, but she didn’t care.
“Not exactly, but there’s no other safe way.” Willie took a deep breath. “Last time I offered to help you guys, I pretty much damned you. Maybe this is a bad idea.”
This time it was Reggie who responded. “Why don’t you explain what it is, and then we decide,” he suggested.
Willie looked uncomfortable, but he spoke anyways. “There’s one way in, through a series of tunnels. I don’t know if it was like some old catacombs, or a cave, or what. But there’s a few miles of underground space that leads directly into the basement of the Hollywood Ghost Club. The downside is…it’s kind of…haunted?”
“Dude, we’re ghosts. We do the haunting, and you’ve seen Reggie. He’s not all that scary,” Alex pointed out. “How bad can it be?”
“Bad. Seriously bad,” Willie warned. “These aren’t normal ghosts. Sometimes, when Caleb gets his revenge, it doesn’t make a ghost vanish. It curses them. These souls are lost causes. They’re filled with malice and will attack you on sight, unless you can calm them down for long enough to slip by.”
“So it’s like walking into a trap,” Julie said. “How do we calm the ghosts down?”
“No idea. Light, maybe?” Willie suggested. “Nobody’s ever been down there long enough to find out what works without getting stuck. I knew a guy once who…who never came back.” Willie said this last bit quietly, and everyone else went silent.
“Where’s the entrance?” Julie finally asked, and everyone turned to look at her.
“Maybe we should talk about this,” Alex started, but Julie cut him off immediately.
“You guys don’t have to come. But I’m going and you can’t stop me. Willie, tell me where the entrance is,” she demanded.
“What? No! You can’t just make that decision,” Alex argued. “I don’t know how you suddenly went on the warpath, but this can’t be the answer. We have to think this through, right Reggie?”
The poor bassist looked torn. “I don’t know, guys…” he mumbled, and Willie put a hand on his shoulder to comfort him.
Alex glared at the two boys. “Look, I love Luke. But I love you too, Julie. And I’m not okay with the possibility that we lose someone else while saving him.”
“Well, we don’t have any other choice, do we?” Julie snapped.
Nobody said it, but they all knew the other option, the safe option. They could not go. And yet Julie refused to put those thoughts into words, because it would be admitting defeat. She stared Alex in the eye, daring him to say it, but after a moment he looked down, knowing that in good conscious, he couldn’t.
“Look, I’m not saying that we shouldn’t go,” Alex said instead. “But we need to carefully examine our options. Strategize. Come up with some sort of concrete plan where we don’t come out worse than we go in, like last time.”
“And what do you suppose we do, then?” Julie said. “There’s not exactly a search engine built for ghost questions.”
“I could go in,” Willie offered. “It’s the least I could do. Maybe when Caleb’s not paying attention, I’ll find the club side of the entrance underground and scout it out a bit.”
“No way,” Alex argued. “It’s bad enough that you’re here helping us and that Caleb could find you at any moment.”
To this, Reggie agreed. “This is our fight, not yours.”
Willie looked ready to argue more, but Julie said, “The boys are right. The three of us will go in together. That’s our best bet. Hopefully, if we stick together, we’ll be fine.”
Willie glanced at them all before nodding. “Alright. Here’s where the entrance is.”

Summery: Julie had a bad day, but the boys are there to comfort her
“Hey, dad,” Julie sighed as she walked into her house.
“Hi, mija.” Ray frowned. “What’s wrong?”
“Bad day.”
Ray sat at the table, facing his daughter. “Do you wanna…?” He gestured to the chair across from him.
“Not really,” Julie sighed again. “I’m just gonna go start on my homework.”
Ray nodded and stood up, watching Julie walk up the stairs.
Julie flopped down on her bed and stared at her ceiling. Before she could start on her homework, however, she heard a knock on her door.
“Come in,” she called, not having the energy to sit up.
She heard the woosh of three ghosts walking through her door and her bed shift as they sat down beside her.
“...Julie?” Luke asked hesitantly.
“Hi guys,” she muttered dejectedly.
Reggie poked her leg. Luke shook his head at him.
“Are you okay?” Alex asked.
“I had a bad day,” she said, finally sitting up.
“Oh,” Reggie muttered. He moved in to hug her, but stopped himself first. “Is- is it okay if I hug you?”
The girl turned to him with a small smile and nodded. Reggie smiled and wrapped his arms tightly around her, leaning his head on her shoulder. Luke hugged her from the other side, buring his face in her hair. Alex leaned forward and wrapped his arms around her as best he could given the two boys on either side of her.
“Thanks guys,” she murmured.
Luke moved so his mouth was right next to her ear.
“It’ll be okay, mariposa,” he whispered so only she could hear. “You’ve got the music inside of you.” She could almost hear the grin in his voice. “Plus, you’ve got us.”

We're a Perfect Harmony PT.5 - Reader x Charlie
Summary: In the last chapter we saw Charlie run off. Why? What happened there? and what will this whole thing mean for Charlie and Emma? And even more important? What will it do for Charlie and Y/N? read this chapter to find out :).
Wordcount: 6997 - it's a long one oopsss.
Other Chapters: 1 / 2 / 3/ 4
Tumblr media
It’s gonna be okay..
Our entire group just looked at each other. What just happened? Whatever Charlie’s phone call had been about.. it could not have been good. I wonder if I should go after him.. Then again, Emma is here too shouldn’t she go after him to make sure if he’s okay? Or should we just leave him alone for a second? No one really says anything and I’m guessing we’re all wondering the same thing.. “So.. eh. Should someone go check on him or..?” I then ask. They all just look at me. “What? Was that dumb question or something?” Emma speaks up “No Y/N, it isn’t.. I think we all think you should go check on him..” “Are you sure? I don’t..” I begin but Emma cuts me off “Yeah I’m sure. For some reason I think I would only make things worse right now.” “Right.. and he’ll accept a whole lot more from you than from the rest of us.” Madi then adds “ehh okay..” I say while sharing a look with Emma just to make sure it is really okay if I go. When she gives me a quick nod I get up and walk in the direction Charlie stormed of too..
I try giving him a call to maybe see if he’ll pick up and tell me where he is but he doesn’t answer. I go to check his bedroom but there’s no sign of him there, after checking the entire campground without any success I’m suddenly remembered of the lake Jeremy brought us to last year maybe he went there? When I make my way out of the tiny forest I see Charlie sitting there looking out over the water. I stop in my tracks for a second, debating whether I should go up to him or not. My heart tells me I should go up to him to at least give him a good hug and I decide to listen to that. I silently make my way over to him. “Just leave me alone. please..” he says, the sad sound of his voice breaking my heart. I turn around to walk away but something is stopping me, I can’t walk away from him not when he’s feeling like this.. so even though I know I may regret it, I turn back around and sit down next to him. As soon as I sit down I notice the fact that tears had been rolling over his cheeks, making my heart break even more for him and I instantly pull him into a very tight hug. “Sorry Charlie. I can’t..” I just tell him softly. The fact that he puts his arms around me and hugs me back so tight I can barely breath tells me it’s okay that I’m there. I can feel Charlie begin to shake and as he buries his face into my neck I soon feel my neck and shoulder getting wet with tears. “hey , hey .. it’s okay.. I don’t know what’s going but it’s gonna be okay.. I got you.” I calmly talk to him slowly running one hand up and down his back to comfort him while the other arm holds him tight. We just sit there like that for what seems to be hours and that’s completely fine I’ll sit here with him, like this, until he calms down enough to get back to camp with me. I don’t care if it take days, I’m not letting him go. After a while he seems to calm down and I slowly try to move back a bit to look at him but Charlie tightens his grip on me and just mumble whispers a: “no.” without any hesitation i just hug him tightly again “I’m not going anywhere Charlie don’t worry.. We can stay here as long as you want okay?”
What has gotten this boy so upset? Who had called him and what did they say? I was so used to Charlie always being happy, cheerful and positive through everything. I never even imagined I would ever see him like this.. I found myself getting sad just by how sad he was and the fact that I desperately wanted to make him feel better but I had no clue how was making me feel frustrated.. Charlie must have felt me tense up cause now it’s him running his hand up and down my back to calm me down. “It’s okay y/n” he whispers. “No it isn’t Charlie.. What’s wrong? What just happened..” I say softly while still sitting there hugging each other tightly. “It’s nothing. Don’t worry about me nugget.” I can tell he tries his best to make me believe it. I let out a deep sigh “Charlie please just talk to me..” I feel him shake his head in the crook of my neck. “Charlie, please.” I say more firm this time. “You can’t keep this all to yourself.. let me be there for you..” I then say in the same soft tone as before.
Another long silence and just sitting there holding each other follows before eventually Charlie speaks up. “It’s my parents..” I wait for him to continue but he doesn’t. “What about them? Are they okay?” I ask him. He sighs and then let’s go of me so he can look at me, the look on his face breaks my heart all over again. “They uh.. they haven’t had the best relationship over the last few years.. me and my siblings were well aware of that you know but every fight always got made up again and then things would be okay for a little while before it got bad again.. but like I said it has been like that for years.. we we’re used to it. In a strange way it was all sort of okay? but now..” He falls silent as I see a few more tears forming in his eyes, I reach out to touch his arm in a sort of comforting manner and give him an empathetic look. “Now that’s all gonna change.. they’re getting a divorce.. and I.. I’m gonna have to live with my mom.. cause you know my dad is gone for work a lot.. but my mom wants to find a completely new place somewhere else .. And I just..” his voice breaks as during all that the tears started falling again. I pull him close to me just hugging him not sure what to say, I felt so bad for him. His entire life had changed in the span of one phone call.. “I’m so sorry.. I.. I don’t really know what to say.. thank you for telling me though, you shouldn’t go trough things like this alone Chewie. I mean obviously you have your siblings but you gotta let people in sometimes.. it’s okay to not be okay and share that..” he lets out the smallest laugh “Did you just call me Chewie?” “yeah.. I’ve been nugget for a year now and I’ve been thinking about a nickname for you.. this one just came out? Sorry?” I can feel myself starting to blush, but the fact it gave him a reason to let out a small laugh makes me happy. He slowly makes his way out of my arms and looks at me with a serious face “No don’t apologize, Chewie Charlie.. it has a nice ring to it. And thank you for making me tell you Nugget.. I really tend to keep things for myself, I don’t want to bother anyone else with my struggles or sadness I’d rather be happy and positive you know. but it’s gonna be nice to have someone to talk to about this..” “Please know you can always talk to me.. You’re not bothering me by telling me you’re not feeling okay. We’re friends, right Char? to me that means having fun but also and maybe even more so being there when things aren’t so fun..” “Yeah no. to me too. And I am that friend to others, I just..” he sighs and falls silent. “You just don’t want to use that part of friendship from others?” I finish his sentence for him. “yeah exactly..” I nod at that “I get that you know.. I feel the same way.. Shall we make a deal? A deal to use each other’s part of that friendship?” “Yeah.. I like that deal.. I’ll make that deal with you Nugget.” I smile at him “Good. It’s settled then Chewie.” He laughs at that. “There’s that laugh I know and love. Hey do you think you’re ready to get back to the rest? Or do you want to stay here a little longer?” I ask him.
“Well.. as much as I love sitting here with you. We should probably get back I bet they’re wondering where we are.. Oh god I bet Emma is freaking out about us sneaking off..” he let’s out a sigh at that realization. “Uhm. Yeah, about that.. I don’t think so.. It was actually her idea that I would go after you and the others agreed so.. We’re not being sneaky if that’s what you think.” He seems surprised about that. “She what? Really? I did not expect that.. still we should go back though I don’t want them to get worried.. but can we keep this whole thing between us for now?” I grab his hand and stand up “Of course. I’m not gonna tell anyone. Come on Chewie.” He gets up and still holding my hand we walk back to the campground it’s only when we get there that I realize we’re still holding hands and I quickly let go of it. Not that it meant anything but that’s obviously not what others would think. Once we get back to our group Emma is the first one to fly over to Charlie to embrace him in a hug and kiss his cheek. I pick up on a quick are you okay from her side and a yeah thank you from Charlie’s side. The others then soon stand up to give Charlie a big hug as well. It turns into a group hug with Charlie in the middle and I just stand there taking it all in, that is until I get pulled into that hug as well by Owen. “You should be a part of this too” he just simply states. The rest of the day goes by somewhat normally. Charlie went back to his ‘I’m-always-happy-self’ which I know isn’t how he’s actually feeling but maybe the him just going along with everything is actually a nice distraction of the whole situation.
Later that night I’m chilling with the boys while Charlie and Emma are spending some time together she was now getting the news of what’s going on.. “soo.. Is Charlie okay?” Jeremy asks me. “He seemed to be okay when you two came back” Owen says. “Well.. I think he will be okay. you know what he’s like.. finding a way to turn everything into something positive..” I tell them. “yeah you’re right.. You we’re gone for quite a while though? Was it that bad? Was he mad at you for coming after him?” Owen asks. I sigh, I’m glad they’re not asking super specific questions Charlies story isn’t mine to tell at all “Well.. He wasn’t mad although he told me to leave him alone at first. In the end it was all good though. We talked and laughed and that’s how he got ready to come back to the group.” “Did he tell you what was going on?” Jer then asks me. “Yeah he did..” I simply state not going any further into detail. I see Owen and Jeremy share a look before looking at me with a smile. “What?” I ask. “You, really are something special aren’t you?” Owen states. When I just give then a confused look Owen explains “Charlie is not a talker. I mean he is a talker, but when it’s very personal, when It’s something that comes close to his own feelings? He doesn’t talk. He’ll pretend everything is fine. We’ve been his friend for like 7 years but he always refused to talk. And then you come in and suddenly he’s a real talker..” for some reason that makes me blush.. “Well .. I don’t know. I may have pushed him a bit, I don’t think.. “ Jer interrupts me “You don’t think we’ve tried pushing him? This is all you Y/N. You apparently have this thing Charlie needs to really truly open up.” “Well. IF that’s true. Then I’m glad. No one should walk around keeping everything to themselves. Anyway.. I’m actually pretty tired so I’m gonna go to bed okay? Wish Emma and Charlie a goodnight for me?” I say while getting up and hugging Jer and Owen goodnight. “We will! Goodnight Y/N!”
When I’m in bed I hear my phone buzz shortly, I pick it up and see Charlie messaged me. “Are you okay Nugget? Going to bed that early doesn’t seem very youuu.” Reading that makes me smile “Yeah, I’m okay. Sorry I was really tired, it was a bit of an intense day I guess? Are you okay?” “Yeah I’m pretty tired too actually.” That answers my question.. Him not answering my question tells me enough. “Are you still up?” I ask him. “ “Yeah, I’m on my way to our sleeping building though. why?” I don’t even hesitate for a second and silently get out of my bed again I make my way out of our room to the entrance of the building we sleep in. When I spot Charlie I literally run towards him he opens his arms for me and I run into them pulling him into a hug. “What are you doing up, you dork?” “You didn’t answer my question Charlie. Which told me you needed a hug.” He lets out a small laugh “Wow. You’re getting good at this whole REALLY knowing me thing.” He says while letting go of me a smile growing on his face when he notices my Rush t-shirt. “Weeeell, SOMEONE decided to let me in today. The thing is Charlie, once you let me in it’s very hard to get rid of me and very hard to hide things from me. “ “Good. Cause I don’t want you to go anywhere Nugget.” I smile at him. “So do you want to talk about it or?” “Nahh not now anyway, we should go to bed. Thanks for coming out to hug me though. I did need that.” “You’re very welcome Chewie, going to bed without a hug felt wrong anyway. Now we’re all good.” I say jokingly while actually being totally serious. That hug before bed did genuinely make a difference it made me feel safe and peaceful before going to bed. I loved it. But he didn’t need to know that though.
The next day everything seems to be back to normal. Well.. Emma isn’t sitting next to Charlie that’s different.. but I’m sure that means nothing right? they don’t have to be stuck together all the time.. plus they both seem to be in pretty okay moods so I’m guessing everything is fine. I can’t let my thoughts dive into that situation too much though because the head camp councilors are trying to get our attention. They tell us that today we’ll be cycling through the neighborhood playing some games and at the end will be doing a survival run. I’m not gonna lie, the survival run gets me nervous.. I’m not the best at sports. Now that in itself has never been a problem at least not with this group.. but at school, sports was basically the time where I felt most insecure, I would always get picked last, people we’re annoyed if I had to be on their team and for some reason I was afraid that would happen today. That I would hold my group back big time, that I would be clumsy and not be able to do half of the things afraid that I would feel like I was dying after one obstacle.. and through all that afraid I would just annoy my group of friends. I find myself starting to think about different excuses as to why I would not be able to do the survival run. Maybe I’ll just pretend to fall and hurt my ankle? My mind keeps running in full speed panic mode for a while until Charlie snaps me out of it.
“Hey, you okay?” he asks me sort of quietly “Yeah, yeah I’m fine. Why?” That obviously was a total lie and Charlie knew that too. He gives me a really? Kind of look and just says “Remember our deal?.” I sigh he wasn’t gonna give this up and I knew that. “I remember. Trust me, I’m okay. I’ll tell you what’s up later okay?” He agrees and as soon as we’re on our bikes I find Charlie and tell him honestly about the thoughts I had that morning and about where those thoughts are coming from. He never says a word and just hums every now and then to let me know he’s listening and understands what I’m saying. When I fall silent Charlie speaks up “You do realize we would never do that you right? I would never let anyone do that to you.” “yeah I know that. But it still get’s me nervous. Not that I think you’ll be mean but maybe just that I can’t do it. And that you’ll all fly through it super easily.. “ Charlie just shakes his head “Y/N! stop that. Stop thinking like that. You can totally do it! and we’re supposed to be a team so that means helping each other out! It’s gonna be fun. Trust me. Get out of that pretty head of yours and just enjoy today. “ Totally missing the fact that he called me pretty I instantly have my defense ready “but..” that’s all I can say before he cuts me off again “No. no buts. We’re gonna enjoy this, you can do this. I’m happy to have you on my team and I promise to not leave you behind I’m gonna help you out if that’s needed okay? Just calm down.. Please.” I let out a deep sigh, “Fine. Trusting you on this one Gillespie.” He let’s out a laugh. “That’s better.”
So far the whole day actually is fun but when the obstacle run comes up I noticeably take a deep breath. Charlie comes up to me, looks me in my eyes and just says ; “ You got this Nugget.” Some obstacles end up being insanely high and while Charlie basically flies over them he always comes back for me, the entire group is ready to help me out and we actually end up having a lot of fun. I felt like I was dying, I was totally out of breath, I felt incredibly clumsy but it was good. All my fears had been for nothing, sure I wasn’t good at this but the way my friends dealt with this , the way Charlie dealt with this made it all okay. When we get to the finish I just fall down in the grass, totally feeling dead after giving it my all. My entire group just follows my lead, Charlie falling down next to me. “see. Told you, you could do it. You gave it your all and did so good! You can be proud of yourself.” Madison picks up on that and adds “Yessss. You totally killed it! Well doneee Y/N!” I cant help but smile “Thanks guys. Really. I would not have gotten here if it wasn’t for you.” And I wasn’t just talking about making it to this finish. Those people had each in their own way had such a positive impact on my life, I would not be where I am now if it wasn’t for them.. On the way back to camp I find myself next to Sacha we’re just talking about what he thinks of the camp so far and end up playing a weird game whoever can get the most people to say hi back to them. The fact that we’re riding next to each other and with that greeting the same people and with that getting the same Hi’s doesn’t seem to matter. We’re having a bit of fun and having some bonding time which maybe helps others sort of believe that I’m actually liking Sacha even though I’ve been spending a crazy amount of time with Charlie.. I was just 100% lost in Charlies world and basically forgot about the fact I was supposed to not be doing that, almost forgot I had planned on hiding my feelings from everyone somewhere way down deep. But how could I if he was being so cute and sweet and supporting and incredibly good looking? He was just not making it THAT easy..
When it became late in the evening me and the girls were just chilling on our beds all pretty tired from the long and active day we had. “Soo.. You and Sacha seem to be getting along pretty well.” Sav hints at me. “I mean.. Yeah he’s nice, talented and just overall an easy going person. What’s there not to like or not to get along with?” “Yeah I can see that. He’s a cool guy!” Jadah agrees with me. “Sooo, will you be asking him out on a date then?” Emma asks me. I for some reason did not see that one coming. “I ehh.. I.. I don’t know? I mean I’m just getting to know him I don’t think I should ask him something like that just yet you know?” Mads who also sleeps in a top bunkbed just gives me a look not buying this whole ‘I like Sacha-thing’ for one bit. “Really? I think you should give it a try, seems to me like he’s having a good time with you!” Emma encourages me. “I don’t know Em.. I really don’t think we’re quite ready for that yet.” “No I think Emma is right y/n! Maybe just ask him to hang out at the end of the week!” Jadah says. “I think you should go for it Y/N” Savannah adds to that. “I mean yeah, maybe at the end of the week I’ll ask him to just hang out. I can do that.” Just that earns me a few cheers from the girls. It’s lovely that they’re rooting for me and encouraging me to go for it especially since they think I like him, and I do as a friend but I don’t want to go out dating him.. that would not be fair to Sacha at all. Thankfully the topic of boys is dropped pretty quickly only to move on to talking about our celebrity crushes.. I was missing my late nights with Charlie.. but I wasn’t gonna lie just a night like this with the girls was actually very fun as well. I fell asleep as a very happy girl that night.
Waking up the next morning I’m actually well rested and in a good mood, instead of my sort of grumpy still half dead morning self. It’s quite early and everyone still seems to be asleep, I get out of my bed, freshen up and make my way outside. The sun is shining and I’m greeted by birds singing their morning songs, while taking a deep breath I just sit down and take in the peaceful scene. Not long after I hear some footsteps behind me which is soon followed by two arms being thrown around me from behind. Without even actually seeing who it was I just know it’s him.. “Good morning Charlie.” “Morning Nugget! You sound incredibly awake for this hour of day.” he jokes in his morning voice as he sits down next to me. “Right?! A certain someone did not keep me up till 4 am last night. look at the difference that makes!” I tease him right back. his face now showing an over acted offended look “Hey! No need to get all mean about it. I thought you loved those Late nights with Gillespie.” I let out a laugh “Late nights with Gillespie? You’re gonna have to work on that name dude..” “Oof. You really have it out for me today ey?” “Sorry. In all seriousness though. you are gonna have to work on that name, it sounds..questionable. But I do love those late nights yeah and I may or may not have missed spending that time with you..” I softly bump into him after saying that. “Sooo…. Late nights with Gillespie is on again for tonight?” he asks in a playful tone. I just look at him for a second “IF you stop calling it that. Then yes.” I laugh. “ Coool. Team no sleep is back! but first, join me for breakfast?” He says as he gets up and holds out his hand for me. I had not noticed the fact that now the entire camp had woken up and were all making their way to breakfast.. I smile up at Charlie and take his hand to let him help me up.
When we get to breakfast our group is already there as Charlie makes his way over to Emma to give her a good morning kiss Emma quickly turns her head so the kiss lands on her cheek. They share a quick look but don’t say anything. Something wasn’t right between them I was sure about that now, there’s a hint of pain and confusion in Charlie’s eyes and sadness in Emma’s.. I know it’s their problem, I know I should stay out of it, I know it’s none of my business but I couldn’t help feeling like I should fix it. Feeling like I should help them out in some way.. so after breakfast I go up to Emma, not sure of what I actually want to do or say..
“Hey Em.. Can we talk for a second?” I just ask her and she agrees following me to the spot where we had been talking earlier that week. “What’s up Y/N?” she asks as soon as we sat down. “I eh.. I guess I just wanted to make sure you we’re doing okay?” She sighs and is silent for a second , it looks as if she’s debating on what to say so I just give her the time and space to think. “Well.. I was gonna say yes but I have the feeling you know that is not true so.. no not really.” I nod “Yeah I uhh couldn’t help pick up on a few signs.. Want to talk to me about what’s wrong?” “I don’t even really know..” she sounds sad when saying that. “What is it that you don’t know? would I be wrong if I said there might be something going on with you and Charlie?” she lets out a small laugh “of course you picked up on that..” I decide to ignore that comment and stay silent in hopes that she will continue and luckily she does “listen before I get into this. I know I’m handling it all wrong okay? So you know the whole situation Charlie is dealing with right? I knew his parents were fighting every now and then but not as much as they apparently were he never talked to me about those things and that kind of annoys me? Why is he keeping all those things from me? I’m his girlfriend shouldn’t I know everything? I just want to be there for him.. but it’s like he won’t let me? And the fact he’s gonna move and neither of us know where makes me scared I will end up losing him and I think that fear is making me push him away already? And I don’t want to do that but I do? But he’s also just letting that happen?” I take a deep breath trying to collect my thoughts. I can see why she’s scared of losing him and I can understand that she wants to know what he’s going through but at the same time I want to yell at her all angry for only making Charlie hurt more than he already is in his current situation.. I try to calmly get my point across “Have you tried just talking to him about everything yet? You can’t expect him to understand what you want and need if you don’t tell him.. just denying some kisses is not gonna tell him anything ems.. and yes. You’re his girlfriend so even though you may be scared, he’s the one that needs your support right now. Give that to him. Don’t make this harder on him than it already is..” I see her swallow “I don’t.. “ she begins but I stop her. “You do know how. Talk to him. TODAY.” She shakes her head “I’m leaving later today and I still have to pack and..” I once again interrupt her. “Stop that. You’re talking to him now. I’m gonna go look for Charlie. I will send him here, and you will talk to him.” I see a glance of panic in her eyes. “Calm down you got this. Just be honest with him.” I walk off and quickly find Charlie “Hey nugget..” before saying anything I pull him in for a quick hug. “Hey, uhh you should go talk to Emma..” I see his eyes widen a bit, making me realize he’s probably expecting the worst now.. “No don’t worry. It’s gonna be okay. she just has to let you in on a few things.. You’ll be okay I promise.” I give him one last hug before sending him off in Emma’s direction. I just hoped this conversation would go well and Charlie would feel a bit better soon..
There’s no sign of either of them for several hours and even though I wanted to go look for Charlie, making sure he’s okay I didn’t. They needed this time together and I had to give it to them. To distract myself from it all I found the rest of the group that were just playing some games and jamming out to some music and that helped. They really were the best kind of distraction. Late in the afternoon Charlie and Emma find us again both looking a lot happier, they’re holding hands and Charlie is holding some of Emma’s bags in his other hand. When they reach us Charlie tells Emma he’ll bring her bags to the car giving Emma some space to say goodbye to all of us. As soon as I stand up she pulls me in for a hug. “Thank you Y/N. Thank you so much. You have no idea how much you’ve just helped me. You’re a good friend. I’ll be missing you. “ I smile at the big difference between this moment now and this moment last year. “No problem ems. I’m glad we got to know each other and actually became friends. And hey, I’m only a face time call away!” I let go of her and she says goodbye to the rest of the group too. Then I see her and Charlie sharing a good goodbye kiss. That view makes me smile, it’s not that I liked seeing him kiss her, not at all.. but I loved seeing him more happy. That’s all I wanted, I wanted him to be happy.
Once it became ‘late night with Gillespie’ o’clock, Charlie and me found ourselves in the middle of that same field as a few nights before. At first we just sit there but Charlie soon decides to lie down. “Come here?” he asks holding his hand out for me, I take it and he pulls me closer to him into a hug. “I don’t know what you did today. I don’t know what you did to Emma, but thank you. You’re a lifesaver Nugget.” He says softly. “I didn’t do anything Charlie.. I just kind of pushed her into talking to you.. I hated seeing you both be sad..” I just lie there Charlie’s arm around me, my head on his chest hearing his steady heartbeat. Usually that sound creeps me out, but now it’s the most calming thing in the world. Out of nowhere I feel a quick and soft kiss on the top of my head. “I wouldn’t call that nothing. Thank you, just please accept me being thankful.” I’m speechless for a second, overwhelmed by the amount of butterflies in my stomach. Suddenly I’m very aware of how we’re laying there and suddenly I feel like we shouldn’t be.. I wiggle my way out of his grip only to lie my head back down on his stomach. That for some reason feels less wrong and still gives me the chance to be close to him. “Fine then. You’re welcome.” I say. He let’s out a laugh and starts to, what feels like braid my hair. After a comfortable silence Charlie speaks up again “Soo, how are things with you and Sacha?” Well I’m here trying to get as close to you as possible without it being wrong.. how do you think it’s going? Is what I would like to say to him but instead I say: “Oh eh, I don’t know? He’s nice, we’re able to have fun he’s incredibly talented..” “But you don’t like him like that?” that answer makes me choke on my own breath. “What? What makes you say that?” he laughs “You okay there nugget? I just think you deserve better than someone who’s nice and talented and I think you would sound a whole lot different if you really liked him like that. I’ve heard you fangirl, I know what you sound like when you love someone..” “oh. Right. well I think you may have a point there. The girls were all telling me I should ask him out on a date but I feel like that wouldn’t be fair to him.” “If you don’t like him don’t do it. You deserve the absolute best in this world Y/N. Don’t ever go for anything that wouldn’t make you a 100% happy.” “Thanks Chewie. That’s actually some good advice.” He gasps “Actually some good advice?! You make me sound like I’m the worst.” I laugh “You know that’s not what I meant! You know I think you’re far from that..” “oh? I don’t know nugget I think you need to remind me again” He teases. “You sure about that? We could be here a while you know.” “I mean I would like to be here a while but you don’t have to remind me. I know.” “Well. Actually. I do still have to thank you for that whole survival thing. You literally got me through that Charlie. You’ve been getting me through a whole lot.. I actually may have to admit that I think you’re the best..” “Ahh thanks Nugget. I don’t want to ruin this braid I’m making but I would have hugged you otherwise..” I laugh “You enjoying braiding my hair Gillespie?” “Actually yes, there’s something strangely calming about it. I can’t promise you it will look good though..” “That’s fine by me.” We lie there a little longer just talking about all kinds of things until Charlie runs out of hair to braid and we agree on calling it a night.
After a short 3 hours of sleep the last full day of camp has arrived. I was not gonna lie that realization made me a bit sad, I was not ready to let go of all those people again. I just lie in my bed smiling at the sight of Mads, Sav and Jadah waking up. “What are you smiling about Y/L/N?” Jadah asks me. “I’m guessing it’s Charlie.” Mads just blurts out. This girl really had been waiting for the second Emma left so she could be real with me again huh? “Nooooo. Actually it’s not. Not Charlie or Sacha either. I just was enjoying the not waking up alone for that last time.” As I get up the girls burst out in laughter. “Oof your hair.. Looking gooood Y/N” Sav jokes. I’m confused for a second only to then remember what Charlie had done.. “Oooh. Yes.. Right forgot about that..” “See. Called it. It was Charlie.” Mads teases. I groan at her while taking the braids out of my hair not that doing that made my hair look any better. I guess today I was gonna go for lion mane instead normal human hair.. When arriving to breakfast I sit down next to Charlie. “Morning Y/N. I like your hair today.” He jokes “Oh shut up Gillespie. This is all your fault.” That fact only makes him laugh. I try to keep a straight face but how can I when he’s laughing like that? I can’t help but smile with him and just embrace the hair.
The rest of the day was mainly focused on playing games that would decide who the best group on camp was that week but since our group had no chance of winning that title anyway we just chilled. We watched the other groups play their games while we we’re singing them random songs. At some point Charlie sat down behind me and told me to lean back against his legs once I did that I felt his hands on my shoulders and the back of neck, this boy casually decided on giving me a massage. I don’t know why he did it. He didn’t say anything and neither did I. We just sat there like that for a good while still singing some songs as I felt myself relax more and more under Charlie’s touch, I apparently had been super tense without even realizing it.. When i locked eyes with Madison for a second she just shoots me a ‘I KNEW IT!” kind of look. I smile at her, deciding to ignore it and close my eyes purely focusing on the things Charlie was doing and let me tell you, I fully enjoyed all those things and I found myself thinking about how he could totally do this more often if he wanted to..
But then Charlie’s phone rings, he gently pushes me forward a tiny bit so he can get up and take this call. Not long after he returns, his face tells me it wasn’t the best phone call he had ever gotten. “You alright?” I ask when he’s sat down beside me. “Yeah.. eh the moving thing is just happening a lot sooner than I thought.. I’ll be on your bus tomorrow we’re staying with my grandma for a while and she lives somewhat close to you..” “oh.. That’s unexpected.. I’m sorry it’s all happening so fast now Charlie..” he sighs “yeah me too..” from that moment on we all silently agreed on basically just ignoring that fact for now. Charlie and Sacha spent some more time jamming Owen joins them drumming on random things, Jer joins in on me and the girls conversation and this how we spend our time until dinner.
After dinner the tradition of staying up all night begins. We end up playing 30 seconds again this time though we’re playing with mixed teams I’m in a team with Madi, Savannah and Charlie playing against Jadah, Sacha , Owen and Jeremy. I, already being tired, am cuddled up against Charlie which he seems to be fine with and no one else seems to question either. Owen and Savannah are once again screaming at each other over every little thing and the rest of us are just having fun with it. The night flies by like that until it’s time to go and watch the sunrise we agreed to make that our own little group tradition. The entire night I never left Charlie’s side and now sitting here on by the little lake that does not change he actually just hugs me closer to him and when he feels me shiver from the cold he takes of his hoodie and offers it to me. “are you sure?” I ask him. “Yes nugget. you’re cold. put it on.” I gladly obey to that order, as soon as I’m wearing the hoodie he pulls me close again. “You know what. It looks good on you nugget.” By the way he whispers that to me I can tell he’s incredibly tired as well. And I can’t blame him for that he’s had a crazy week.. “Might be keeping it then Gillespie.” I tease him. “Ha. In your dreams Y/L/N. It’s my favorite. I’ll make sure to pack it again next year though. I promise.” We then fall silent again just enjoying each other’s company in this beautiful piece of nature watching the world slowly come to life again.
We then quickly pack our bags and say our goodbyes, we agree on figuring out a way to all meet up some time during the year so we won’t have to miss everyone for THAT long. After giving everyone a last hug and wave Charlie and me get on the bus. “I guess this is one positive to me living with my grandma.. maybe we can now actually hang out sometime instead of always face timing?” He sounds hopeful. “Yeah I would like that. I promised you everything would be okay.. I’ll do what I can to make that come true. The occasional real life hug might help?” “Thanks nugget. You’re the best.” without even thinking about it I rest my head on his shoulder. “Anytime.” I tell him while closing my eyes. I feel him resting his head on top of mine and within minutes we both fall asleep like that..

______________________________________________________
You gasped along with the rest of the crowd.
“How’d she do that?” you heard Flynn mutter.
“Wait, were those holograms?” someone shouts. Julie looked relieved.
“Yes! Yes, they were holograms.” You knew her well enough to see that she was lying, but knew she must have her reasons. Right?
“Okay people, show’s over.” Principal Lessa started shooing people out of the gym and back to their classes.
You and Flynn hung back, wanting to talk to Julie.
Julie hopped off the stage after talking to Principal Lessa and Mrs. Harrison for a moment. You could tell she was excited.
“Wow, you did it! Congrats,” you say, excited that Julie wasn’t going to be kicked out of the music program.
“Thanks to you two.” Julie pulled the two of you into a brief hug. Flynn pulled away quickly.
“Hey, you okay?” Julie asked her, frowning slightly.
“Uh… I’m great,” she answered, smiling uneasily. “When… when did you start playing with a hologram band?”
“Oh! It was just one song. We’re not a band. They’re a band, a hologram band. Definitely holograms…”
“Yeah, we saw.” you said, trying to calm the tension clearly rising between your two best friends.
Flynn kept staring at Julie, confused. “Why have you been keeping those cute boys a secret?”
“There’s a reason for that, it’s just… really crazy.” Julie was clearly trying to cover something up. You and Flynn gave each other a look that said “what’s going on with her?”.
“Oh, I’m all about crazy! Let’s hear it.” Now Flynn was just trying to get Julie to admit she was lying.
Julie hesitated for a moment. “Okay. Um, so they’re… from Sweden!”
Your eyebrows shot up in surprise.
“Yeah, turns out they’re not only great at making meatballs, but also good at making music. So, they play there, I stream them here, we play together, they leave and that’s it. So! Who’s excited I’m back in the music program!” Julie finished with jazz hands, desperately changing the topic.
“Jules, are you lying to us?” Flynn asked.
Julie dropped her act. “Yeah. Yeah I’m lying.”
The look of hurt on Flynn’s face said it all. “Since when do we lie to each other?”
You were hurt too, but you didn’t want to make the whole scene worse, so you said nothing.
“Flynn… Y/N…. I’m sorry.”
Flynn scoffed. “‘I’m sorry’? That’s all you’ve got?” She grabbed your hand. “Come on, Y/N. Let’s go.”
“Flynn, wait! Y/N!” Julie called out after you. You looked back at her, your heart feeling heavy with Julie’s betrayal.
-----
“Flynn, where are we- ow!” you were cut off as Flynn pulled you down behind some bushes as a car passed. You pulled your hand away, rubbing your wrist.
“Sorry, Y/N, I just…” She glanced around as if looking for something.
Or someone.
“It’s fine,” you said with a sigh. “So, where are we going?”
“To Julie’s house. Come on.”
You ran the rest of the way, hiding every time you heard a car coming. You could tell Flynn was planning on doing something, but you had no idea what it was.
She popped up from behind some bushes next to Julie’s house, looking around to make sure the coast was clear. She didn’t see Julie until it was too late.
“Flynn!” she called out. Grimacing because you two had been caught, Flynn gestured for you to come out of hiding.
“And Y/N…” Julie added, slightly confused when you popped up next to Flynn. She shook her head, as if to clear it. “What are you guys doing here? I’ve been looking all over for you.”
“Well, not all over, ‘cause here we are,” Flynn stated dully as she started walking over to Julie. You followed her.
“I’ve been texting you both all day. The least you could have done is text me back!”
“Flynn stole my phone,” you defended yourself.
“And I sent a poop emoji. I think it said everything. I was just leaving this.” Flynn pulled her Double Trouble t-shirt out of her backpack and tried to hand it back to Julie. “I won’t need it anymore.”
“I’m not taking it.”
“Fine. Then my dad can wash his car with it. Though all this betrayal on it might scratch his paint.” She shoved the shirt back in the bag. Julie flinched slightly at Flynn’s harsh words.
“Look, I’m very sorry for not telling you,” Julie started. Flynn crossed her arms. “But I- I need you to know how important you both are to me! There’s no way I would have made it through this year if it wasn’t for you guys.”
“Yet it was three strangers who got you back into music. I don’t need someone in my life who lies and keeps things from me. Neither of us do.” Flynn grabbed your hand again. And started to walk away.
“Goodbye, Julie,” you said softly before being dragged away by Flynn.
Before you could get anywhere, however, Julie grabbed onto your other hand and pulled you and Flynn back.
“They’re ghosts.”
“Wh-  what?” you asked, your nose wrinkling in shock and disbelief.
“The boys in my band. They’re not holograms, they’re ghosts. And when we play together, people can see them.”
“What do you mean, ‘ghosts’? Like the kind that rattle chains and go ‘boo!’?” Flynn rolled her eyes.
“No, and I’m pretty sure that’s just a hurtful ghost stereotype. These guys are just normal dead dudes! Well…. Reggie’s a little questionable.” Julie defended herself. You were starting to get worried for her. Flynn pulled out her phone.
“Who are you texting?” You and Julie asked together. You looked at each other and smiled slightly.
Flynn rolled her eyes again. “Your dad. He told me to text him if I was worried about you and um…” she gestured to Julie. “I’m worried. You’re seeing things, Jules.”
“Flynn has a point, Jules,” you said.
Julie looked at you, annoyed. “All right. So you wanna be difficult.” She took the phone from Flynn’s hands. “Meet me in my mom’s studio in thirty minutes, and I’ll prove to you that I’m not crazy. And… please don’t text my dad.” She gave Flynn’s phone back to her.
She sighed. “You have thirty minutes.”
Julie sighed and glanced down at Flynn’s bag.
“Eggs?” she asked, her face showing her confusion. “Why did you bring eggs?”
“Oh! Um…. no.” Flynn laughed awkwardly. “No. See, I grabbed those by mistake. It’s not like I was gonna convince Y/N to help me throw them at your bedroom window or anything…”
You elbowed her. “We were gonna do what?”
Julie just sighed and started walking to the studio.
“Thirty minutes!” Flynn called after her.
-----
“Thanks for coming,” Julie said with a small laugh as she opened the doors to the studio. “We just wanted to rehearse the song so it was perfect, which it’s not, but whatever.”
“No, if we’re gonna hear a song from your imaginary ghost band, I want it to be perfect.” Flynn squeezed your hand. “So, get back in there. All of you. You too,” she added, pointing at the air, earning a laugh from you and Julie.
“They’re not out here,” she explained.
Flynn put her hand on Julie’s shoulder. “Oh I know,” was all she said before walking into the studio, hand-in-hand with you.
“Uh, actually, could you guys go over there?” Julie asked, pointing to the couch. “Reggie needs some space to rock out, and he feels kinda weird walking through you.”
Flynn laughed. “Boy, when you create a world, you really live in it.”
“Just sit!” Julie said, pushing you down onto the couch.
“Now, if you’ll notice, there’s no equipment that will produce a hologram. Feel free to look around.”
You double checked, but Julie was right. The studio looked the same as it had when Rose was playing in it. You felt a slight pang in your chest as you thought of the woman who had become a second mom to you.
Julie started talking again, bringing you out of your thoughts. “The guys took a poem I wrote about you both and put it to music.”
“Aww. I wish I didn’t have to talk to your dad after this.” Flynn crossed her arms. You smiled at Julie. You were concerned for her mental health, but it was sweet that she had written a poem about you and Flynn.
“It’s called Flying Solo. Hope you like it.”
She started playing, and you felt yourself getting caught up in the song.
“If I leave you on a bad note, leave you on a sad note, guess that means I’m buying lunch that day.”
It was a really sweet song, and you were vibing to it when the boys you had seen at the spirit rally suddenly appeared from thin air. Flynn screamed. You jumped back, startled by both the scream and the sudden appearance of the boys.
They smiled at your and Flynn’s reactions, but continued playing with Julie, their voices blending together in harmony.
When there was a brief interlude, Julie pulled you and Flynn off the couch and introduced you to the guys. The one in the orange beanie, Luke, crossed over to a microphone by the couch, smiling at you as he sang.
Flynn walked over to the one in flannel, Reggie, and stuck her hand through his shoulder.
“Weird, right?” he said with a smirk.
“They’re ghosts!” Flynn exclaimed.
Your eyes widening, you glanced over at Luke. Would your hand go through him?
As if reading your thoughts, he stopped playing for a minute and held out his hand to you. After hesitating for a second, you tried to take it, only for your hand to slip right through his.
“Whoa,” you breathed. Turning to look at Julie, wide eyed, you blurted out: “They are ghosts!”
Luke smirked.
“Oh, uh, we prefer the term ‘musician spirits’,” the one on the drums, Alex, said.
Reggie pointed at Alex and nodded to show his agreement.
“Julie?” Luke asked, a hint of nervousness in his voice. “So, does this mean you’re joining our band?”
“Uh, actually,” Flynn walked over to him with her hands on her hips. “I think you’re joining her band.”
Julie leaned on Flynn. “I’m gonna go with what she said.” You laughed. Luke, Alex, and Reggie smiled before continuing with the song. You stood up and danced with Julie and Flynn.
“My life, my life would be real low, zero, flying solo without you!” Julie belted as the song finished. You started clapping just as the rest of the band vanished.
Julie smiled at you. “You still wanna talk to my dad?” she asked Flynn.
“No, I’m good,” the girl replied. All three of you giggled.
“Oh!” you said, checking the time. “I have to go pick up Danny. I’ll see you guys later!” you said with a wave as you walked out of the studio. You had been in there so long that you hadn’t noticed the clouds covering the sun.
You had made it about halfway to the field when it started to rain. It started lightly, but then all of a sudden, it was pouring. You cursed under your breath as you started running. Practice would be ending early.
“Ugh!” you grunted as you tripped and fell into a puddle, pain coursing through your ankle. You weren’t sure if you would be able to stand on it, but you had to try. You had to get to Danny.
Plus, you had the uneasy feeling that someone was watching you.
“Oh dear, are you hurt?” asked a voice from behind you. You whipped your head around to find a tall man dressed in a shimmering black cloak-like coat, complete with a top hat. He kneeled down next to you. You weren’t exactly comfortable with him being there, infact he gave off a feeling of mystery and deceit, but you couldn’t exactly get up and leave.
“Oh, um, I’m alright, thank you, though,” you said, giving the man your sweetest smile. It was the one you used most often to hide behind.
He glanced at your ankle, which you were holding with both hands, and frowned slightly. “Twisted ankle?”
You nodded.
The man shook his head slightly before standing up and extending a hand to you. “Let me help you up.”
You took his hand gratefully, leaning on him slightly for support and wincing when you put weight on your ankle.
“I’m sure it will be fine,” you said, looking at your ankle. “Thank you.”
You looked back up in time to see that the man had taken out a knife. Your eyes widened as he drove it into your heart.
You died without a sound.
