JATP Big Bang 2023

It’s finally time! Jatp Big Bang 2023! Even though it was kinda canceled that didn’t happen till after we’d been paired with our artists and I got such a wonderful pairing. I’ve been holding on to this short 10k fic since May and @beanomatica has created an image for each of the five chapters.

I could not love them more!

julie molina and the haunting of point medusa

the one in which Julie moves into the lighthouse of Point Medusa and promptly becomes a target for the building's frantic ghosts and less-than-ideal past. Hey, at least the girls in town are lovely.

Carefully, she folds the corners up and drops the cloth in the corner of the room. She’ll worry about laundry and new sheets tomorrow; when her brain isn’t a whirling mess of grey clouds. And even though the old sheets smell about as stale as they could, she just barely musters the energy to change into her PJs before crawling in and closing her eyes.  When she opens them again, it’s to the vast sight of the ocean and the night sky spreading out in front of and beneath her. Julie exhales and watches a small cloud drift out of her mouth and into the night. Her legs dangle where she sits on the railing, her hands curled loosely around the metal for stability.  Beneath her, the waves crash into the rocks where the lighthouse stands. Slowly, Julie becomes aware of how high up she is. Her heart leaps up into her throat, her vision blurs as she clutches the railing with a death grip. Her hands feel slick with something, too slippery to keep holding on for long. Julie knows she has to move and get back on the other side of the railing, where the light slowly turns inside the lantern room. She doesn’t remember lighting it, isn’t even sure it should still be functional. She doesn’t dare move.  The sound of the waves and her heart slowly meld together into a cacophony of low rumbling. Julie thinks she might hear a voice, distant and distorted. Her hands slip and she looks down again. The ocean breaks up on the rocks, the foam pink instead of white. The lantern turns and the waves shine red. Somebody screams. The railing disappears, and Julie falls.

For the director's cut: there's a fire burning in my bones?

Oh, man, this fic. THIS FIC. This fic has been on my mind a lot, actually, since my current 9-1-1 WIP is less a general crossover, and more a stealth crossover with fire burning. So while it's primarily a 9-1-1 fic (the working title is buck sees dead people, and I'm trying very hard to write it in a way that no working knowledge of JATP is required), it's involved a lot of re-reading to make sure the crossover parts are consistent with the story. IDEK. Look, sometimes it's just better to let the muse have their way, and the muse was pretty demanding about this one. ANYWAY! Back in the golden days of the JATP fandom, I had a lot of ideas. It was a hyperfixation that hit hard, and I was jotting down story ideas faster than I could even start writing any of them. But when the Big Bang challenge came along, there was only one story I could even contemplate writing, and that was a story about Julie becoming a ghost. I knew I wanted it to be essentially a season 2 fic. And I knew I wanted Julie to experience being a ghost, but not have her actually have to die in any kind of permanent way. That was it. Everything else that happened throughout that entire story - the entire plot, really, and the ships and the soul bonding aspects in particular - were little "eureka!" moments I had in the course of writing. Usually these brainstorms hit at 3am and had me jotting notes in my fic notebook by flashlight:

Fire burning also never went through a significant editing process. Aside from general tweaks, I was deliriously happy with how the story turned out, considering I pantsed the hell out of it. The most interesting thing, for me, though: Originally, I thought this story would end up being gen fic, or maybe Julie/Luke. When Reggie found her in the music room... Look, you know how it feels when something just unlocks inside you? And you're like "MY GOD. YES. THIS." That scene, the opening to fire burning, was my first real PING! moment about Julie and Reggie. (And I was clearly doomed forever after that moment.) Reggie wasn't even originally the one who was supposed to find her! But I wanted so badly to show the balance of her friendship with all three of the boys, so I decided it made more sense for it to be someone other than Luke in that scene. And the way everything fell into place after that, right up until the first true OT3 scene, happened almost entirely by accident. I fell in love with the idea of all of them together much the same way Julie did. A little at a time until it felt more like an inevitability, and I couldn't even pinpoint the moment I realized it was going to happen. Also: I had two absolute favorite scenes in this fic. The first is when Julie is sitting at the piano, and feels Reggie's teardrop on her hand, from where he's sitting and watching over her body in the hospital. If I was capable of serious art, that is the scene I wish I could somehow convey in visual form, which is probably why Reggie's POV ended up being the first timestamp I wrote. My other favorite scene was after the ritual, where Julie can finally 'talk' to her dad and tells him about dating Luke and Reggie. Writing Ray will always be a personal favorite for me (Family Matters was another story that happened mostly by accident tbh), and trying to determine what his reaction would be in that situation was stupid amounts of fun. WHEW OKAY I HOPE I'M DOING THIS RIGHT AND YOU ENJOYED THIS BIT OF COMMENTARY!

Fave Fics Part 2: Electric Boogaloo

1. Better walk the line

My single dad Reggie AU with some PeterPatter romance. Wrote this for the 2021 JatP Big Bang absolutely last minute, but it is still pretty beloved, so let's give it some time to shine.

2. My heart's longing for something more than I've had (more than I have)

Another fic written last minute for Wet Hot Phantom Summer, and basically what brought me a lot of good friends in the rare pair canoe, as so many of them reached out when I was having doubts while writing it. It's just smutty goodness with a dash of angst, but it's still pretty good!

3. The burning hearts alone in the dark

My fake dating Rulie AU! Based of a prompt fill I did for Only One Bed Bingo, it became this sprawling thing that I still love to this day, and has some nice Ray and Reggie scenes in it, because I know you'll appreciate that.

4. I am fine, I am totally fine (I'm not fine) 

This is the first fic I wrote for you! It is an angst fest, but you did ask for it, and even though I put Reggie through it (though the Alfie section still kills me the most) it is still so precious to me. Mainly because it is the fic that I think cemented our friendship.

5. When I was born 

So this is a fic I actually wrote as a birthday present to myself back in 2022. Featuring some angst, some Rulie sweetness, and one of my favourite songs that I think fits Reggie really well. I recently re-read it and was like, man this is good, so check it out if you haven't!

probably my troped round 1 fic, you look like you've just seen a monster (is that what i look like to you?). usually i like to have a happy ending but i wrote this in like two days the week of my first breakup. so uh yeah couldn't really think of happy ending for that one.

pretty much anything else lmao. i love to write fluff and cuddles and shit like that so just go read any other of my fics

8. Do you get hate on fics?

the only hate on fics i can remember ever getting was back in my bmc days when i wrote meremine and someone was mad bc michael is gay and didn't like that i put him in a throuple with a woman. but like other than that clown behavior no not really lmao

i have one (1) smut fic published and it is on a different account because i was so scared of jatp fandom being mean lmao. luckily i only got nice comments on it so i will share that you can go read it here. i mean it was probably kind of obvious that it was me because there are only so many ppl into that rarepair? but idk jatp mutuals lmk who you thought it was lsdfksjf

dialogue! i love writing dialogue. screenwriting is awesome because it's just dialogue.

hrmm action scenes. repetitive prose. actually sitting down and plotting something cohesively

nothing against it but i'm only fluent in english so i'd consult someone else who actually speaks that language

like i said earlier with the favorite ship question, this is tough to answer because i feel like it comes down to more what am i in the mood for most often. i'm pretty proud of my trans steve fic as well as aro bi reggie, both of them because i spent a long time trying to make sure i doing the representation right and i think i did a good job. also that sad bobby polycurve fic from the kudos question, i put a lot of myself in it and i feel very proud of how it came out.

Julie and the Phantoms and The Bright Sessions almost exclusively at this point, but I also have Percy Jackson and Supernatural fics on Ao3. Back in the day, I wrote a ton of PJO on fanfiction.net and then a handful of fics in like 8 other fandoms.

I feel like I did... once... I do not remember what it was for or about and i'm pretty sure I deleted the comment. which is probably good in the long run that it happens rarely enough that i forget the details.

I occasionally write smut. I do not consider myself good at it. So I often don't post any. Closest I've got is the above linked mark bryant's different trauma fic and its like. five paragraphs in one scene.

I do! Haven't posted a ton, I don't think I have any on ao3, and a lot of what I call a crossover in my head and google docs is just a fandom crossed with ocs @joyandthephantoms and I made up and like to put places.

description, exposition, action, setting. basically all the things you don't need in good fanfic which is why i like writing fanfic :)

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

fine if the translation is really obvious from context, fine if in small doses where it wouldn't be suuuper annoying to google the translation. whole conversations i will inevitably skip, although i did read a really cool Captain America fic once where there was some German dialogue and on ao3 the paragraphs were hyperlinked so that you hovered over them and saw the translation.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Percy Jackson! my fanfiction.net accounts are still up, but don't look at them, they're not good /lh.

20. Favorite fic you've written?

not sure there's an easy answer to this! sometimes i write things just to write them and post them just to get them out of my google docs, and sometimes i write things cause the idea won't let me go, and i post them cause i'm really proud and want some validation from strangers (and friends!) on the internet. my favorite one is whichever one I'm most proud of in the moment, which is usually the one I just finished, but even the ones I feel don't hold up as well or that i could've written better, i'm still really proud of, cause i made a hat! This was fun! i haven't been active on this account for a while, but i liked getting back into the swing of things, so if anyone still looks at this blog and actually read this, feel free to send me an ask with more questions/comments about my fics! i always like talking about them :)

Admittedly, Julie drank more than she probably should have, distracted by Flynn and Carrie’s company and the warmth of sitting in a bar with people talking and laughing all around her. It’s much later than she had planned to return, her phone two percent away from dying on her. So it’s no surprise she is struggling to close the lighthouse door behind her, and it’s no surprise that she is no longer walking in steady, straight lines. But it would have been fine—she would have found her way back to her bedroom without any further issues—if she hadn’t thought to grab herself a glass of water for when she wakes up. There is somebody else in the kitchen when she arrives. Not just one, but three somebodies, shadows moving erratically across the walls, shrinking and growing in no discernible pattern. One of them, dried blood down the back of a torn shirt, is clutching one of her mum’s floral cups against its chest, blackened fingers hiding the petals and porcelain from her view. Another, smaller—tall, broad, short, barely a line across the wall—shadow pulls out of the strange two-dimensional caricature and Julie’s terror, stuck somewhere between her tongue and teeth, reverberates around her head as bloodless lips open in a silent scream that feels peeled from her leaden tongue.

I don’t know if this will make sense or if it comes across in the work, but I feel like I choose my words carefully and with intention. For me, that’s really the key to writing introspection that really peels back the layers on emotions big or small. And I like to think that’s a strong point in my writing!

💖 What made you start writing?

I came back to fic writing at the start of the pandemic. Part of it was because I just couldn’t get these two characters out of my head, and part of it was because I was itching for a creative outlet to fill the void. This isn’t at all part of the question but I do think it’s interesting that the things that made me start writing again are also the things that keep me writing three years on.

💔 Is there a fic of yours that broke your heart?

Cross Your Heart was really tough to write so I think that would be my answer for this. I started it right after my grandma died because I just needed something to focus on that wasn’t just all-consuming grief, and I finally finished it almost a year to the date after she passed. I think the overall hopefulness/fluffiness of what that fic ended up becoming is sort of beautiful in hindsight because the first few iterations were super heavy. I can see now that as frustrating as it was to chip away at that story for an entire year, it ultimately ended up making for a better finished product.

Writing Goals:  July 2023

Writing goals for the month, posting publicly because I think it encourages accountability:

Prepping: I need to save those final 5 prom dresses bookmarked on my computer, and then I’m done with that project.  I think I may have picked Julie’s dress, but I still need dresses for Flynn, Carrie, and Kayla.  And I should read The Invisible Orientation and/or try to find something about demisexuality, but I’m not sure where that will fit in to my schedule since I’m going to be writing more for Camp NaNo so that may have to wait until next month.

Writing:  I’m doing Camp NaNoWriMo with an initial goal of 14,4000 words (that’s 400 words on each weekday and 600 on each weekend day).  That should get me three scenes from Boogaloo this month, probably The Panic Attack, The Track, and The Recipe.  And if I need a break, there’s always the foster care AU.

The JatP Big Bang is cancelled, so that frees me up from that time pressure (kind of a good thing, kind of bad, because last year’s BB pushed me to get things published that would probably still be lingering on my hard drive).  I’m still going to try to aim for September for The Squad, though, which means I will probably have to skip over some scenes that happen in this part of the season and come back to them later.

Editing and Publishing:   I’d like to publish The Type plus a three-chapter “Catching Up with Reggie” fic that combines The Other Woman and The Heart-to-Heart.  And there’s a fifth Saturday, so maybe I’ll get to The Hug?  I was getting very mixed up on my timeline when I wrote The Hug, though, so I will need to devote some editing time to sorting that out for The Hug and Catching Up, which overlap with each other and The Panic Attack.

I struggled with a few of these. I have a FF.net account, but I've never posted there as an author so I said no. I've beta read for strangers as part of big bangs, and arguably those people became fandom friends, but they weren't friends when I started betaing so I said no on that one, too. I didn't circle "has that one fic that deserves more attention" because technically I have at least 3, if not more. And I circled that I have an outline, but we're keeping the definition of outline very loose, mmkay?
